Conveniently situated north of Baja California—where locals head to the border for weekends in Ensenada—and 120 miles south of Los Angeles, San Diego is home to more than 1.3 million residents, making it the eighth largest city in the country. There’s more to this glorified, sleepy surf town than its 70 miles of dreamy beaches, though. Consider the theater scene found at the renowned La Jolla Play-house, the star-studded Comic-Con mega fest each July and the abundance of old-school diners and ice cream shops nestled throughout nearby Coronado Island. Though we begin our trip here, you might find it hard to leave “America’s Finest City.”

SIPWith more than 40 breweries within county lines, San Diego’s suds scene is hopping. Head to Stone Brewing Co.’s new Stone Brewery World Bistro & Gardens inside former military bar-racks at the the city’s buzzing Liberty Station neighborhood. Order a round of the beer and wine on tap and pair your selection with charred Brussels sprouts and savory BBQ duck tacos before a game of bocce ball out on the lawn.

The wood-paneled, white- tablecloth restaurant evokes old-school dining right down to the maitre d’ who will remember your name after a second visit. Locals come for the passed steak sliders pleasing the happy hour crowd, as well as the New York strip for dinner and crème brûlée for dessert. The restaurant’s original location in La Jolla boasts an NFL San Diego Chargers memorabilia-packed private dining room, since it’s a favor-ite of the local boys in blue.

R E L A XPint-size travelers, ideally ages 2–12, are guaranteed sweet dreams at the LEGOLAND Hotel, just 30 miles North of San Diego in Carlsbad. Tucked inside the 128-acre LEGO-LAND park, the 250-room toyland boasts larger-than-life LEGO master-pieces. Take, for example, the 32-foot shipwreck and castle in the lobby, or the choice of pirate-, kingdom-, and adventure-themed suites. Perks such as nightly shows and extended play hours for the park’s 60 rides, water park, and aquarium, are added bonuses.

SE EThe city’s top attraction is the famed 100-acre San Diego Zoo in lush Bal-boa Park. More than 3.2 million visi-tors a year go wild for more than 3,700 rare and endangered animals—espe-cially the giant pandas—and 700,000 exotic plants covering the sanctuary. If you have time, head north to the San Pasqual Valley to the sprawling San Diego Zoo Safari Park. As if that wasn’t enough, you’re also free to explore the palm-lined coastal enclave of La Jolla for boutique shopping, fine dining, and sunset viewing along the sandstone cliffs. La Jolla Cove is a popular gathering spot for picnics and watching hordes of seals and sea lions sunbathing on the beach and rocks.

Natural BeautyCalifornia State Parks commemorates years of preserving the state’s natural treasures and history.

California State Parks off er seemingly endless sources of recreation, adventure, and history. Visitors can enjoy nearly 3,000 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails that lead to pictur-esque landscapes; 52 historic parks; 32 recreation areas; and 62 state beaches that whisper tales of California heritage and culture.

Each park features distinct wildlife, terrain, and history, so no matter where you wander, you’ll quickly see why the park system is California’s most popular visitor destination—second only to the U.S. National Park System in nationwide popularity.

Spend the day meandering by foot among these botanical giants at the 53,000-acre Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Here, you’ll have to crane your neck to see the dense, leafy cano-py at the tops of towering redwoods.

At Torrey Pines State Beach, make your way past stands of Torrey pines—unique to this region and which give

the park its name—and up to the top of the bluff for panoramic coastal views. In the waters below, you’ll wit-ness the red-orange hues of 300-foot sandstone cliff s refl ected in the deep blue Pacifi c Ocean.

Or, discover a slice of California’s history at Hearst Castle. Once home to newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, today the estate lures visitors with its impressive display of European antiques, fi ne art, and stunning archi-tecture set against dramatic coastal vistas.

As visitors continue to fl ock to the parks year after year, California State Parks have become an increasingly important part of the state’s economy. An estimated 56,000 jobs are sustained by park activities, and the annual estimated economic impact is nearly $6 billion. is year, California State Parks commemorates its 150th anni-versary, so there has never been a better time to visit. parks.ca.gov
