Directed by Bill Condon, 2015, UK/USA, 104 minsWith Ian McKellan, Laura Linney, Frances de la Tour

Based on Mitch Cullen’s novel and set in 1947, the film finds SherlockHolmes living in a Sussex village with hishousekeeper and son, and haunted by anunsolved 30-year-old case he can barelyremember. Ian McKellen clearly enjoys therole of the great detective, benefiting greatlyfrom the excellent support of Phil Daviesand Francis de la Tour. This is a playful andmischievous film, with some surprisinglypoignant things to say about old age.
