Stuart Atkinson – Landscapes

When capturing the atmosphere and light of East Anglia, Ialso endeavour to convey the love I have for this unique partof the country.

I am drawn to so many aspects of this special area – the highwide sky, the land, estuaries, sea, sand dunes, heathland andmeadows. They are ever-changing and I try to capture themoment.

My paintings are not formulaic. They come spontaneously, driven by heat, shadow, cloud, feeling. I paint them becausethey ask to be painted.

The implausible plot hasBritish fishery expert and Asperger’ssufferer (McGregor) being asked tofulfill a sheik’s vision of bringing flyfishing to the desert. Emily Bluntworks for the sheik; Kristin ScottThomas is our Prime Minister’sover-zealous press secretary. A wellcrafted, charming movie with strongcentral performances.

Bruce Gernand’s exhibition ‘Animal House’ finds a fittinghome at Diss Corn Hall Gallery (formerly The Stables).Foregrounding sculptural process, plaster mouldsbecome finished objects – houses of absent animal form. There is a play between the interior and the outer surface, between the animate and the static.

The fluidity of animal forms is contained by anarchitectural sensibility, which also resonates with fossilsedimentations and sarcophagi. Harking back to ancientroots while using contemporary computer techniques, these sculptures explore animal representations asrepositories of our own imaginative projections.

Our exhibition in February 2011, of work by Mike Webb – thecreator of the ‘Mere Quacks’ cartoon in the Diss Express –was one of our most popular ever. We are delighted that heis back with a mixture of new paintings and originaldrawings of his recent and memorable cartoons.

Mike’s subjects for his paintings are mostly of the fastdisappearing aspects of rural living that he grew up with. They include man-made constructions and machines, butusually not man himself. The viewer becomes the figure inthe landscape.

He does few portraits, but will include one of the late ‘SheriffBunny’ Patterson, a local character he featured in his MereQuacks cartoons many times.

The annual Searchers concert atDiss Corn Hall is a fantastic start toChristmas and the show that die-hard fans never miss. This year theycelebrate a remarkable 50 years asThe Searchers and 25 years playingat Diss Corn Hall.
