DID YOU KNOW? Smartphones can make thehome improvement processthat much easier. Varioussmartphone apps now exist, and many were designed withthe intention of making it eas-ier to plan and execute homeimprovement projects. Someapps allow smartphone usersto more easily match the col-ors of their furnishings withcertain accents and acces-sories, saving homeownersthe time spent wondering ifcertain items will match orclash with their existing fur-nishings. Homeowners caneven make use of apps thatmake it easier for them to seehow new furniture will fit intheir existing spaces. Ofcourse, homeowners also cantake photos of their furnishingson their smartphones as well, and then compare those pho-tos to shades of paint or carpetto save themselves from mak-ing a second trip to the store.
DID YOU KNOW?Many home improvement projects involve hanging decorative items, such as photo frames or shelv-ing. Homeowners frequently wrestle with nails, screws and hanging hardware, perhaps creatingmore holes in their walls than is necessary to get items level and in the right spots. Instead of playinga guessing game of figuring out where the hanging holes or hooks are located on the back of items, use your office equipment to make life easier. Make a copy of the back of the item you're trying tohang with a printer/scanner or a copy machine, making sure to copy the item to full scale. Print thecopy at full size and use it to drill the hanging holes. If you don't have access to a copy machine orscanner, use a piece of tape to measure the distance between the hanging holes on the back ofthe frame. Stick the tape to the wall and then put your nails or screws at the ends of the tape.

DID YOU KNOW? Homeowners about to embark on home improvement projectsshould prioritize dust removal to avoid the potentially negativeside effects of exposure to lead dust. When undergoing a reno-vation, homes built before 1978, the year the use of lead paintwas banned, are likely to produce lead dust, which occurs whenlead paint is sanded or chipped. That dust can be especiallyharmful to children, pregnant women and pets. According to theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention, lead dust that is assmall as a grain of sand is enough to poison children, who maysuffer brain damage, hearing loss, nervous system and kidneydamage, and decreased muscle and bone growth after exposureto lead dust. When pregnant women are exposed to lead dust, that exposure may affect the baby's cognitive development whileincreasing the mother's blood pressure. Household pets exposedto lead dust may suffer from a series of side effects, includingvomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and possibly death. Whenmaking renovations to their homes, homeowners can open win-dows and wear protective gear such as masks and safety gog-gles to avoid direct exposure to lead dust.
DID YOU KNOWAccording to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, inadequate ventilation in a home can in-crease indoor air pollution levels. Those pollutant levels rise in a poorly ventilated home becausenot enough outdoor air is making its way into a home to dilute emissions from indoor sources ofpollution. In addition, in a poorly ventilated home, indoor air pollutants are not being carried out ofthe home, leaving the pollutants to linger and potentially putting the health of the home's residentsat risk. Though it might seem counterintuitive to allow outdoor air into a home during winter, whensuch air tends to be at its coldest, such outdoor air can protect a home's inhabitants from the im-mediate effects of indoor air pollution, which include irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, as wellas headaches, dizziness and fatigue. Long-term effects of prolonged exposure to indoor air pollutioncan include respiratory disease, heart disease and cancer. But homeowners who want to increaseoutdoor air infiltration in their homes do not have to open the windows even when temperaturesdip. A simple inspection of mechanical ventilation systems, such as bathroom and kitchen fans andair handling systems that em-ploy fans and ducts to removeindoor air and distribute fil-tered and conditioned outdoorair throughout a home, may beall that's necessary to ensureindoor air stays healthy duringthe winter. If such systems arein need of repair, homeownersshould ensure those repairsare made prior to the arrival ofwinter.

DEFEATING ODORS AND DAMPNESS(NAPS)—If your basement is like many in America, itʼs all wet. The American Society of Home Inspec-tors estimates that 60 percent of U.S. homes have wet basements, and 38 percent run the risk of base-ment mold. The CausesMoisture is the most common problem in basements and crawl spaces, either because it comes infrom the outside or is being produced inside the home by your family. The soil around walls may havelots of moisture that seeps in through cracks in the foundation or because of hydrostatic pressure fromthe soil outside the walls or floor. In addition, basements tend to be cooler than the rest of the house, and because cool air holds lessmoisture than warm air, basements usually have higher relative humidity than the rest of the house.Other reasons for excess moisture include:•Missing, broken or poorly installed gutters or downspouts•Poor grading around the foundation of the house that causes water to drain toward the house ratherthan away•Clothes dryer and bathrooms arenʼt properly ventilated•Windows leak•Sump pump has failed. The ProblemWhile some signs of excess moisture may be obvious, such asthe appearance of condensation on windows, theyʼre also often“invisible” in that theyʼre hidden in crawl spaces and basements. As studies have shown, up to 50 percent of the air in a housecomes from underground areas, and this damp, moldy air risesand eventually makes its way into the rest of the house. There, itcan cause poor indoor air quality and uncomfortably high humiditylevels.A SolutionFortunately, you can control dampness and odors due to high hu-midity in basements: Use a dehumidifier. The most energy effi-cient on the market are Santa Fe high-capacity dehumidifiers.According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Energy Star–
certified dehumidifiers can remove the same amount of moistureas similarly sized conventional units but will use at least 15 per-cent less energy. Santa Fe offers a dehumidifier that exceeds theEnergy Star standard by using 50 percent less energy. These dehumidifiers will also help maintain the structural integrityof your home, will minimize mold growth, and will improve the in-door air quality of the whole house by removing odor-causingmoisture.Learn MoreFor further information on dehumidifiers, visit www.Dehumidifier-Solutions.com or call (800) 533-7533.An energy-efficient dehumidifier can help your home avoid themold, pests, allergens and odors a damp basement can encour-age.

FALL CHIMNEY CLEANING TIPS Homeowners whose homes have fireplaces understand that alittle more maintenance goes into autumn prep work for theirhomes than for those homeowners without fireplaces. Readyingthe fireplace for another season of use requires some upkeep.A clean fireplace and chimney is the best defense against haz-ardous conditions that can cause a chimney or home fire. Forthose who did not clean their chimneys in the spring after exten-sive winter use, it is imperative to handle cleaning prior to lightingyour first fire in the coming winter. Chimney cleaning can be a do-it-yourself job. Rods and brushescan cost as much as $150, depending on where you live. That isroughly equivalent to the cost of hiring a professional chimneysweep once. But if you have a fear of heights or prefer not toclimb up on the roof to inspect the chimney, you may just want tohire a professional. When cleaning your chimney, first place plastic sheeting in thefireplace and around the opening to the fireplace inside the home. Then climb up on the roof and remove the chimney cap inspect-ing the chimney for soot and creosote, which tends to be thickestat the mouth of the chimney where it will cool and stick to the in-side of the masonry. Use the correct size brush for your chimneyto make adequate surface contact to sweep out the debris. Goinside and clean up the residual mess, then reach up into thechimney from the fireplace side and remove any other soot be-fore moving into the basement (or wherever the chimney reachesthe bottom) to remove any soot that has dropped from that areaas well.Cleaning a chimney is a messy task that will take some work, butit is a task that needs to be done to safeguard a home before thearrival of winter.

CLEANING UP THE MESS MADE BY TITLE WASHING(NAPSI)—A dangerous scam that hides major problems fromconsumers who purchase used cars is on the rise.Thatʼs the word from experts who say nearly 800,000 used carson Americaʼs roads may be part of an emerging fraud called titlewashing.Title washing makes rebuilt wrecks and cars with odometer is-sues look like problem-free used cars on paper. Professional conmen illegally alter vehicle documents to get title brands such as“salvage” or “flood” removed from a carʼs title. Theyʼll often patchup the wrecked cars, move them to other states and sell themwith a clear title to unsuspecting buyers. Victims can lose thou-sands and put their lives at risk purchasing used cars with
washed titles. To help, Carfax Vehicle His-
tory Reports alert people tocases of potential title wash-ing. Every Motor Vehicle De-partment in the U.S. andCanada reports branded titlesto Carfax. Getting an inspec-tion by a trusted mechanic isalso recommended. You can now shop for usedcars at the all-new www.car-fax.com.
