TOWN OF DAY RESIDENTSEMS SERVICES - MEDICAL AND AMBULANCE

The Town of Day Town Board has signed a contract withthe Town of Corinth to have the Jessups Landing Emer-gency Squad provide EMS services to all of the Town ofDay residents effective immediately. This squad has beenproviding advanced life support (ALS) with paramedics ona mutual aid call basis to residents from the Hadley TownLine with Day up to Horsehill Road on the South Shoreand up to Hadley Hill Road on the North Shore. The Ed-inburg EMS has provided BLS (basic life support) withEMTs to the residents living from the Hadley Hill Road tothe Edinburg Town Line with Day on the North Shore andfrom the Horsehill Road to the Edinburg Town Line on theSouth Shore.When a 911 call is now placed, it will go directly to the Jes-sups Landing EMS Squad located in Corinth. They are ona 24 hour a day, 7 days a week schedule and are ALS(advanced life support) squad, with paramedics and EMTson staff. If they are not available, for whatever reason,then the Dispatch Center will call those emergencysquads that are available for mutual aid in our town.When the Town did the comprehensive plan study, theneed for ALS service was critical to many residents. Ourcontract with the prior Corinth Ambulance Squad termi-nated when they disbanded. We took the opportunity tonegotiate with the Town of Corinth for ALS services. Wehave had good service from the Edinburg Squad, but thedeciding factor was that Corinth has 24/7 ALS (para-medics) and Edinburg does not have 24/7 coverage orparamedics. Those factors weighed heavily in the deci-sion making process, and, after much consideration, theBoard made the decision to contract with the Town ofCorinth, using the Jessups Landing ALS services.We will monitor this service and receive reports on thenumber of calls and the response time on each call. Everyresident needs to be aware that we live in a rural area andwe depend on outside agencies to provide EMS serviceas well as fire service. Based on the distance of theseproviders, we need to keep this in mind as we determinewhat “reasonable” response time is.Feel free to contact any Town Board member if you havequestions or concerns, or attend a Town Board meetingheld on the 2nd Monday of every month at 7pm.

ONE MANʼS VISIONDuring my walks around the village I pass houses that have been in existence for generations of

Corinthians. Palmer Avenue especially interests me, having been brought up in the neighborhoodback in the twenties. Nearly all of these homes have gone to new owners in the passage of time.Some donʼt even exist anymore, having fallen prey to progress or decay.

As I walked up the street the other day, pondering on the changes and noting some of the placesthat still look like they did when I was a kid walking to school. I was remembering all the familieswho lived in this house, or that one, who lived next door, and who lived there across the street andI can recall them all. Then through the haze of memories the sound of heavy equipment assailedmy senses. A little further on, the reason for this cacophony became apparent. Over in the woodyard of the former International Paper Co. workers were busy chewing up the ground with heavyduty earth moving machinery.

Well now, “Whatʼs going on here?” say I. On further investigation, I discovered that this was thespot our estimable Hudson River Credit Union was building their impressive new headquarters. Allthis activity prodded my memory back to nineteen sixty four when Chuck Pacco started the infantCredit Union in Tony Presteraʼs office down in the coating plant. Sandy Brady was his girl Friday inthe fledgling stage.

I had a soft spot in my heart for the Paccos. I started work at the mill after the war back in nineteenforty five and after bouncing around a bit, I wound up in the beater room. One of the men whoworked there was Charles Pacco, father to Chuck and Bob. Old Charley and I got to be good friendsand when he retired, he gave me a little tin box that he had carried for years. In that box was a re-ligious medal and I, too, carried it for years.

At any rate, like all old men living more and more in the past, all this passed through my mind asI continued my walk up Palmer Avenue with the old Credit Union on one side and a sumptuousnew edifice going up across the road.

How on earth did a dream in one manʼs mind culminate in a million dollar business and growingexponentially from nineteen sixty four to the present? Chuck has gone now, but what a legacy heleft! His dream flourishes and grows day by day. It grows in spite of the lack of industry after thepaper mill closed its doors and left us so precipitously.

That little dream that started so inauspiciously in Tony Presteraʼs office now has grown from thereto an office in the time office, to the small building on Palmer Avenue, to three branch offices, andnow the new corporate headquarters. Do you think Chuck Pacco had any idea his little germ of anidea would lead to such a colossus? But, Gentle Reader, it did just that and it probably wonʼt stopthere. Was Chuck Pacco a genius? Probably not, but he surrounded himself with a few bright menand with his leadership, they brought it to fruition. His family and fellow Corinthians should be proudof his foresight and the dedication of members of all the board of directors guiding it along downthrough the years.

If you walk into the Credit Union today, you will see Charles Paccoʼs portrait on the wall and hisright hand man, Wilson Smead right along side of him.
