** The following section may contain instructions for servicing various components of your vehicle. These arean overview of the process that will be performed by a skilled technician in our shop. They are not intended tobe a guide for a “do-it-yourself” operation.

Below is information we feel would help you better understand some of the reasons for taking preventivemaintenance steps -- steps that help to ensure the reliability and safety of your vehicle for you and your family.

Additional Information

Your vehicles tires are the only connection between your vehicle and the road. Safevehicle operation depends on your tires being in good condition. If your tires areneglected, the tread can wear completely away, leaving the tire bald and often exposingthe steel cords. Not only is condition dangerous, it is also unlawful in many states. Tireswith an abnormal tread wear pattern can cause the vehicle to shimmy and vibrate, andcan adversely affect the manner in which your vehicle performs. A tire with an abnormaltread wear pattern will no longer contact the road the way that it was designed to, andthis condition can be dangerous, especially during adverse road conditions.

Significance:

Signs of irregular tirewear.

New Tire.

AI-15

Carefully raise the vehicle using an approved automotive lift. Remove the rim/tireassembly from the vehicle. Remove the tire from the rim using the proper tiredismount/mounting equipment. Install a new valve stem assembly in the rim. Install anew tire on the rim using the tire dismount/mounting equipment. Inflate the tire to thevehicle manufacturers recommended pressure. Balance the tire/rim assembly on acomputer aided dynamic tire balancing machine. Reinstall the tire/rim assembly onto thevehicle. Torque the wheel retaining nuts to the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications.

Operation Description:

Replace worn out or abnormally worn tires

Page 7: Cori Nastro T. Bernius Service Consultant Certified Technician€¦ · BE JUMP STARTED AFTER SITTING OVER NIGHT (VEHICLE NEEDED TO BE JUMP STARTED AFTER SITTING OVER NIGHT) Caution

Advantage:

Replacing worn tires is part of vehicle maintenance that is necessary to ensure that yourdriving experience is as safe as possible. Besides the obvious safety benefits, tires thatare in good condition and properly inflated to the correct air pressure can increase theoverall fuel economy, and help provide a comfortable ride.

The accessory drive belt(s) on your vehicle performs many functions. The PowerSteering System, Alternator (charging system), and Air conditioning System are alldriven by accessory drive belts. On some vehicles, accessory drive belts also drive thewater pump, engine cooling fan, and Air Injection Pump (emission control). Accessorydrive belts wear during normal engine operation, and need to be checked and replacedperiodically. Keep this point in mind, as you can lose one or more systems if a belt isbroken. For example, a broken fan or waterpump belt can cause severe overheatingwhich could result in expensive repairs, or even total engine failure. A broken powersteering belt can result in the loss of your vehicle's power steering system, which couldmake your vehicle very difficult to steer. This condition could be dangerous if a quicksteering maneuver is necessary. A broken alternator belt could cause your vehicle to loseall of its electrical power, and could eventually result in a dead battery. This conditioncould cause the engine to shut off and not restart.

Significance:Cracked/Worn

Accessory Drive Belt

New Accessory DriveBelt

AI-20

Loosen the drive belt tensioner and remove the old belt. Repeat this step for any otherbelts that require replacement. Inspect the tensioner and idler pulley bearings for noise orsigns of wear. Replace any tensioner or idler pulleys that require replacement. Install thenew belt and tensioner to factory specifications. Repeat this step for any additional beltsthat require replacement. Start the engine, and after a minute or so, shut the engine off.Recheck the belt tension and make final adjustments as necessary.

Operation Description:

Replace Accessory Drive Belts (Fan Belts (V-Belts)

Advantage:

Make sure that the drive belt(s) on your vehicle are in good condition. This is animportant point to keep in mind as you attempt to keep your vehicle reliable and safe.Drive belt replacement is recommended at certain mileage intervals, This step can alsosave you money by avoiding possible engine damage and costly engine repairs. Don'twait, have your drive belts inspected and replaced whenever it is recommended by thevehicle manufacturer!

The ability to drive safely interests all of us. Having a clean windshield is a necessity forsafe driving. Most driving decisions are dependent on the driver having a clear view ofthe road ahead. Worn or torn wiper blades do not effectively clean the windshield, and adirty windshield can obstruct the drivers view, possibly resulting in an accident.

Significance:

Impaired View FromWorn Wiper Blades

New Wiper Blades.

AI-24

Remove the wiper blades from the wiper arms following the vehicle manufacturer'sinstructions (found in the owner's guide). Install new wiper blade assemblies onto thewiper arms. Thoroughly clean the windshield.

Operation Description:

Replace Windshield Wiper Blades

Advantage:

Most wiper blade manufacturers recommend replacing your wiper blades every 6 monthsor 6,000 miles. Something as simple and as inexpensive as replacing your windshieldwiper blades will make your driving experience for you and your family a safer one.

Vehicle suspensions can wear with age and repeated heavy use. Rough road surfaces andan occasional pothole can change the vehicle’s wheel alignment. A wheel alignment canimprove your steering control and overall vehicle handling. It can also help preventabnormal tire wear by bringing the vehicle suspension components back to the vehiclemanufacturer’s specifications. This important step will keep your vehicle driving theway it was designed to. Keep in mind that a vehicle alignment is necessary any time aworn suspension part is replaced.

Significance:

Abnormal Tire wearFrom a Vehicle that is

out of Alignment.

A Wheel alignmentbeing Performed.

AI-29

Inspect the front and rear suspension components for any signs of wear or damage.Using wheel alignment equipment, adjust the suspension and wheels to the vehiclemanufacture’s specifications.

Operation Description:

Perform Wheel Alignment

Advantage:

Even slightly worn suspension components can affect the vehicle's wheel alignment. This can lead to premature wear of tires and reduce overall vehicle comfort and safety. Avehicle with worn out suspension parts can be unsafe to drive. Maintaining your vehiclesuspension and performing regular wheel alignments along with tire rotation can helpkeep your vehicle safe and reliable.

CV joints allow your drive axles to transmit torque to the wheels, while still allowing thewheels to turn left or right when steering the car. CV joints also allow the suspension tofunction normally, while still allowing the drive axles to move your car down thehighway. The CV joint boots cover the CV joints protecting them from dirt, debris, andwater. A torn or damaged CV joint boot allows the CV joint grease to collect dirt anddebris, which will quickly destroy the joint. A worn out CV joint will start to makenoise, and will eventually break, leaving the vehicle disabled. Often times, other vehicledamage will result when a CV joint breaks, resulting in an expensive repair.

Significance:Damaged/Worn out CV

Joint.

New CV Joint; Greasedand Ready to Install on

Axle.

AI-34

Refer to the manufacturer’s service information and remove the CV axle with thedamaged joint from the vehicle. Two different repair options are listed: (1) Replace thebad CV joint: Remove the worn-out CV joint from the axle shaft. Pack the new CV jointwith the proper grease, and install it onto the axle, along with a new CV boot. Reinstallthe CV axle assembly onto the vehicle. (2) Replace the CV axle with a new or rebuiltunit: Install the new or rebuilt CV axle assembly onto the vehicle.

Operation Description:

Replace Worn Out CV Joint / Axle

Advantage:

Nobody wants to be stranded by the side of the road with a broken down vehicle.Replacing a worn-out CV joint will help make sure that your vehicle stays reliable. Youwill also save money by avoiding additional damage and expense that can be caused bythe CV joint breaking completely.

The components that make up your steering and suspension are very important to theperformance of your vehicle. They allow movement of the suspension to occur whendriving over bumps and during turns. They also keep your vehicle going straight downthe highway. Worn out suspension components can cause your tires to wear-outprematurely. They can also cause your vehicle to wander or pull to one side as you drive. If a worn suspension component is not replaced in a timely manner, your vehicle canbecome unsafe to drive. If a worn-out suspension or steering component breaks whendriving down the road, you may not be able to control/steer your vehicle, and thereby runthe risk of getting in an accident and/or doing additional damage to your vehicle.

Significance:Worn Out

Suspension/Steeringcomponents.

Newly Replaced Balljoint and Tie Rod End.

AI-39

Carefully lift the vehicle using an approved automotive lift. Inspect the front and rearsuspension to locate any damaged or worn components. Remove any worn suspensioncomponents according to the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions. Install the newcomponents and perform an wheel alignment. Then test drive the vehicle.

Operation Description:

Replace Worn-out Suspension/Steering Components

Advantage:

Even with slightly worn suspension or steering components, you will wear out your tiresprematurely. Safety is number one when it comes to you and your family. A vehicle withworn out suspension components (i.e., ball joints, drag links, pitman arms, idler arms, control arm bushings and tie-rods) can be unsafe to drive. Maintaining your front andrear suspension helps keep your vehicle safe and reliable.

When a strut wears out, your vehicle will bounce too much when going over bumps. Itwill also sway excessively while moving through a turn. Worn out struts can lead toserious handling problems with your vehicle, and this presents a safety issue. Yourvehicle may even handle in an unpredictable manner. Worn out struts can also causeyour tires to wear unevenly, greatly reducing the life of your tires. You should replaceyour struts before they get to this point.

Significance:

Worn out struts damagetires.

New Struts

AI-48

Note: McPherson Struts should always be replaced in pairs. Carefully lift the vehicleusing an approved automotive lift. Remove the wheel that corresponds with the strut thatis going to be replaced. Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s service information andremove the strut/spring assembly from the vehicle. Using a strut spring compressor, carefully compress the coil spring and disassemble the strut assembly. Remove the strutcap and bearing, and inspect them for damage or wear. If the bearing or cap is damagedor worn, it must be replaced. Remove the strut insert from the strut assembly. Install thenew strut insert. Reinstall the coil spring and cap and bearing. Carefully decompress thecoil spring. Install the strut/spring assembly back onto the vehicle. Reinstall the wheeland torque the lug nuts to the correct torque specification.
