CORCORAN’S CORNER Enrollment of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion Candidates... This Sunday, Oct. 25, we have invited our Second Grade parishioners and their families to an Enrollment Ceremony at our 10 AM Mass, as they begin their year-long preparation process to celebrate the sacra-ments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Commun-ion. During their year in religion or catechetical ses-sions, they will learn about these sacraments, and then celebrate them. Please keep them all in your prayers. The October Count... During all the weekends of October, our usher/greeters will be “counting heads” at each of our weekend Masses. This is being done in every parish throughout the Archdiocese, and has been done for many years now. So if you see the ushers scanning the congregation, you will know why. In early Novem-ber, I will share the results of our count, and the num-bers which the Archdiocese has reported to us from last year’s counting. Ministry Fair… On the weekend of November 7 and 8, our parish will host a Ministry Fair featuring all the various liturgical ministries, formation and educational groups, social action and support groups and efforts, and all our parish organizations. It is a chance for parishioners to consider being part of these community groups and efforts. This weekend we are focusing on the large variety of social action and support groups which our parish is engaged in. Whether it is our St. Vincent De Paul Society’s outreach and support of those in need, our Ministry of Consolation who visit at wakes; our Alcoholics Anonymous Group; Men’s Group; our monthly Hope Employment Ministry for those seeking work, our Prayer Shawl Ministry of knitters who make prayer blankets; the Newborns in Need Group who knit and sew items for premature infants in the hospital; our parish alliance with the ecumenical SWIFT [South West interfaith Team]; our Social Action Ministry that does so much to educate and empower us about a wide variety of our Church’s teachings and outreach, including our wonderful parish-sharing relationship with St. Procopius Parish in Pilsen, serving at the Daybreak Shelter Soup in Joliet, and our support of Respond Now who assists the poorest of the poor in the south suburbs. Our parish is actively engaged with feeding the hungry ,consoling the sorrowing, clothing the naked, and advancing Catholic Social Teaching by the activi-ties of our lives. This week we consider such actions of justice and mercy, and consider our role in these parish efforts. Our upcoming Parish Ministry Fair encourages us to think over how we are all linked to the greater efforts of our parish community.

Great Catholic Feasts: All Saints and All Souls... Next weekend, October 31 and November 1, we celebrate the Feast of All Saints, and on Monday, November 2, the Feast of All Souls. This is a great “Catholic Weekend.” We first mock the devil and evil on the Eve of All Hallows [Halloween], proclaiming that the devil holds no sway over us, and has no power in our lives. On All Saints Day, November 1, we remember all the good people we know who have died, who were friends to God, and who now live with him forever in heaven. Hopefully in future years, All Saints Day will be the day that our Church remembers the goodness of our lives, when we join God in heaven. Finally, on the Feast of All Souls, November 2, we remember and mourn all our beloved deceased family and friends. Mourning is a process, and All Souls Day helps us make this journey. You may turn in your All Souls Day Purgatorial Society envelopes in the regular collection. Throughout the year we offer Masses in memory of all those in our parish purgatorial society. Besides the regular 9 AM All Souls Day Mass on November 2, we will have a special All Souls Liturgy at 7 PM in our church with light hospitality to follow in the Narthex. All are welcome as we pray for our beloved dead, remembering them in prayer. A Word to the Wise... Besides restriping the parking lot, we have updated the “Handicapped Parking” signs with new higher levels of fines. Police may ticket cars parking in slots designated for the handicapped who do not show a handicapped sticker. A “word to the wise” should be sufficient. Praying for our Military.... Someone recently suggested that we list the names of those who are serving in our military in our parish bulletin on occasion. This is a wonderful idea, but one that I would not follow. The reason is that, when I have raised that issue in prior parishes, a number of families said that the last thing that they wanted in this current age is for strangers to know that their spouse was out of the country serving our nation. They were afraid of being targeted by some low life. We do regularly pray for the military at Mass [and my most common penance in the sacrament of reconciliation is for the penitent to pray for the safety of our military].

Keep Smiling...

THE DIAPER GAP

The need for diaper banks is huge. Few people are aware of the "Diaper Gap" that exists in the United States. Needy families cannot purchase disposable diapers with most government assistance like food stamps and WIC. Diapers are classified with cigarettes, alcohol and pet food as disallowed purchases. Cloth diapers are not allowed in day care centers and most families in need do not have their own laundry facilities and commercial

facilities do not allow cloth diapers to be washed in their machines.

The consequences of diaper need is astonishing. America’s babies are being shortchanged. With 5.9 million babies in the U.S. aged three or younger living in poor or low-income families and disposable diapers costing up to $150 per month per baby with no government assistance. The average infant uses up to a dozen diapers a day and a toddler uses around 8. If a family cannot afford diapers, the baby may stay in a soiled diaper all day or the parent might clean out a soiled diaper and reuse it. Babies born into poor or low-income families can spend a day or longer in one diaper, leading to potential health risks. Most childcare centers, even free & subsidized facilities, will turn away a child who arrives without a day’s supply of disposable diapers. Many parents can not go to work or school if they can’t leave their babies at childcare. Hence, babies live in home environments with more ten-sion, less nurturing and possible abuse. Their chance to develop cognitive abilities and language skills normally is in jeopardy, and frankly, the uncomfortable baby will cry — a lot. SWADDLE diaper bank fills the gap for partner agencies: Catholic Charities Southwest Cook, The COURAGE Program and Together We Cope.

Please help fill the depository. All sizes are needed. Please bring donation to the Narthex. Questions? Call Deacon George or Pat Brooks, 708-468-8093.

VOCATIONS Exploring Priesthood Weekend is a retreat designed to help men discern God's call to the diocesan priesthood. To be called by God to serve him as a priest means to have one's soul stirred deep within. Throughout a weekend of prayer, discussion, pres-entations of diocesan priesthood and group interac-tion, men begin to better understand God's move-ment in their life. Held from October 30-November 1, 2015, at Mundelein Seminary, 1000 East Maple Ave., Mundelein. For information call Fr. Francis Bitterman at 312-534-8298.

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS GRACIOUS AND LOVING GOD, help the men and women of our parishes to hear the call to serve. Our needs are great and our people thirst for Your Presence. OPEN THE HEARTS OF MANY. Raise up faithful servants of the Gospel—dedicated, holy priests, sisters, brothers and deacons, who will spend themselves for Your people and their needs.

BLESS ALL OF OUR MARRIED COUPLES with a rich faith and children that desire to serve You.

BLESS THOSE WHO ARE SERVING NOW with courage and perseverance.

GRANT THAT MANY WILL BE INSPIRED by their exam-ple and faith. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sacred Space—The Prayer Book 2016 In just a few short weeks our parish will host the Fall Parish Ministry Fair (Nov. 7/8). For many years the parish has honored several prayer ministries which support the rich spiritual life of our parishioners. One of these is the Sacred Space prayer ministry. Members of the Sacred Space community spend quality time reflecting on daily scripture readings as presented in a book titled, Sacred Space The Prayer Book. This particular book has been a part of the prayer life of the Catholic Community of St. Elizabeth Seton for several years now. Sacred Space: The Prayer Book 2016 offers short, in-depth meditations on the scripture of each day throughout the church year. It is a value for anyone who wants to grow in prayer and be more connected to God, but may feel too busy to do so. Two groups of parishioners (and a few members of other parishes) meet once a month to share their reflections on the daily scripture readings. The first group meets in the Cornerstone on the first Monday of each month after the 9 AM Mass. The second meets in the parish conference room on the first Tuesday of each month at 7 PM. Notices of the gatherings are announced in the bulletin. If you would like to purchase a copy of Sacred Space The Prayer Book 2016 please stop in, or call, the parish office and leave your name, phone number and the num-ber of books you wish to purchase by November 8. The cost of the book is just under $15. We hope to have your copy to you by the first Sunday of Advent.

Sacred Space Prayer Gracious God, the music of our lives is meant to be a symphony of love. Endlessly and lovingly you sustain us, and we learn to respond as best we can. You speak your life-giving Word in our hearts and refresh us constantly through our daily prayer. Grant that we, the Sacred Space community, may become the “Good News in the present tense” to a needy world. Amen.

SWIFT ANNUAL INTERFAITH DINNER Tickets must be purchased by MONDAY, NOV. 2

The St. Elizabeth Seton Social Action Ministry and SWIFT invite you to join us at our Annual Interfaith Din-ner. We hope that you, as a member of one of SWIFT’s participating congregations, will come and share in an interesting discussion on the topic of Feasting and Fast-ing, the Role of food in our Faiths. Please contact Carol Davis at 708-403-9447 for tickets or for more information. Tickets are also available in the parish office. When: Sunday, November 15th Where: The Prayer Center of Orland Park Quran Academy Building 16530-104th Ave., Orland Park Time: 6:00 pm – Registration 6:30-8:30 pm — Dinner and Discussion: Cost: $20 (non-refundable) Pre-registration and tickets required. Much modern conversation about heaven tends to focus on the gratification of personal tastes; but heaven is a celebration shared by a whole community, not merely by individuals.

NEXT WEEK:THE JOY OF THE SAINTS

In the Catholic tradition heaven is envisioned as an eminently social place. It is not a matter of the isolated soul alone with God for eternity; rather, part of the joy of the saints in God’s king-dom is the joy that they feel in being with each other. St. Catherine of Siena, the 14th Century Italian mystic, wrote that the saints “rejoice and exult, sharing each other’s goodness with loving affection.” She states that when a soul reached eternal life, all souls shared in that soul’s good-ness, and likewise shared theirs, experiencing new freshness in their exultation that she de-scribed as mirthfulness, jubilation, and gladness. (See The Dialogue, ch. 41). So the great mul-titude of which the book of Revelation speaks rejoices not simply in knowing God, but in know-ing the incredible varieties of goodness that God’s grace has made possible in human beings. Most people know that Halloween originated as the eve of All Saints Day — All Hallows Eve. And a perspective from a parent’s point of view of Halloween would be to witness, after the treats have been collected that children gather in a friend’s home or gather with their siblings, dump out their candy booty on the floor, and begin trading: the exchange is characterized by great excitement and happiness — not just because they are trading up for favorite candies, but the sheer happiness of being together with friends and of both giving and receiving. To borrow from Catherine of Siena, it was an occasion of mirthfulness, jubilation and gladness. What more appropriate way to celebrate the saints than to joyfully share our gifts with one another? This is what saints do in eternity.

John’s vision of a vast throng from every nation and people (Revelation 7:2-4, 9-14). We hear how the 144,00 chosen ones were to be marked with the seal of the living God upon their foreheads. All faithful Jews were to be observers of the law to the deepest part of their being. Some Christian sects argue that the 144,00 is the number of people going to

heaven. This is a misunderstanding of the symbolism of the Book of Revelation. John saw a crowd without number from every na-tion and race and people and tongue. These are the people who are going to heaven. They are numberless.

By God’s love, we may be called God’s children (1 John 3:1-3).

ALL SAINTS

DAY November 1,

2015

Lord God, You are source

of joy for the saints in glory.

Give us some share in their joy,

so that we might come to praise You

in eternity. Amen.

God has demonstrated how much He loves us by the fact that we are called children of God. God does not call us slaves; God calls us His friends and even His beloved children. This does not mean that everyone will love us. The world hated Jesus because it could not

embrace Jesus and His message. It wanted selfishness, and Jesus preached love and sacrifice. We are already God’s children. What we shall be in the future cannot even be imagined, for it will be a participation in the glory of God.

SECOND READING

FIRST READING

REFLECTION

GOSPEL The Beatitudes: your reward will be great in heaven (Matthew 5:1-12a). Jesus is the new Moses. He is the founder of the New Israel, the Church. Like Moses who climbed Mount Sinai to receive the law, Jesus climbed a mountain in order to give the new

law to the New Israel (the Sermon on the Mount). Unlike the 10 Commandments of the old law, the Beatitudes are not a series of do’s and don’ts. They are a call to generosity. One no longer asks how much one can do before it becomes a sin. One must ask what one can do to become a better Christian. The poor in spirit are those who are not proud. Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness are the Christians. They were unjustly thrown out of the synagogue for their profession of faith in Jesus. They are persecuted for the sake of the kingdom. Those who are clean of heart are those whose every thought is of God. If one’s every thought is of God, then one will see signs of God everywhere.

Dear Parish Family, St. Elizabeth Seton’s Music Department is pleased to announce our 2015-2016 Concert Series. We are excited to be able to present our parish and the Southwest Suburbs beautiful, spiritual and uplifting music provided by our volunteer cantors, choirs, and liturgical dancers. We are also enhanced by the addition of wonderful instrumentalists, some of our very own parishioners, and others who travel to our parish from near and far to be part of our concerts and celebrations. Seton’s music is an inspiring mixture of classic, contemporary and traditional music. In order to continue our tradition of enhancing our music with instrumentalists at our concerts and liturgies we rely on your generous donations. A Seton Music Program Sponsorship is a great way for your company or family to show your support for the continuation of presenting quality music to our communities. An ad book with your ad will be included in the program of each of our concerts this year. At each concert, we have an expected attendance of over 600 people. The following form details available ad size and cost. Most importantly, your gift will enable the St. Elizabeth Seton Music Department to continue their gift of music to the parish and community. Dear Parish Family of St. Elizabeth Seton,

St. Coletta’s is a social service agency providing residential, educational and vocational services to children and adults with developmental disabilities without regard to race, religion or economic background. Currently St. Coletta’s has 27 group homes in 15 southwestern suburban communities in the Chicago area. Two of these group homes and one apartment are situated within the St. Elizabeth Seton Parish boundaries. Many of these developmentally disabled individuals at St. Coletta’s are wards of the State and consider us their family. With all of the cutbacks in funding within the State of Illinois, it is impossible to provide Christmas gifts for all of the special needs people entrusted to their care. That is why they are hoping you will help God’s most vulnerable people. Sincerely,

Brittany Bennett

Director of Development

We received an appeal from St. Coletta’s Foundation which we want to share with you...

Would you be willing to help?

In the St. Coletta’s residential homes located in our parish boundaries, there are a total of 17 men living at these three sites, all of whom are non-verbal and/or autistic with various mental capacities.

If you are able to provide an “age-appropriate” Christmas gift for one of these men, their names (with specific gift Suggestions) and gift tags will be available the weekend of Oct. 31st-Nov. 1st.

The gifts need to be returned by Wednesday, Nov. 18th so as not to conflict with the St. Procopius Christmas Drive. God bless you for your care and generosity, Margie Guadagno, Pastoral Associate

ST. ANTONIO DE SANT’ANNA GALVÃO

(1739-1822)

GOD’S PLAN IN A PERSON’S LIFE OFTEN TAKES UNEXPECTED TURNS WHICH BECOME LIFE-GIVING

THROUGH COOPERATION WITH GOD’S GRACE.

Born in Guarantingueta near São Paulo (Brazil), Antônio attended the Jesuit seminary in Belem but later decided to become a Franciscan friar. Invested in 1760, he made final his profession the following year and was ordained in 1762. In São Paulo, he served as preacher, confessor and porter. Within a few years he was appointed confessor to the Recollects of St. Teresa, a group of nuns in that city. He and Sister Helena Maria of the Holy Spirit founded a new community of sisters under the patronage of Our Lady of the Conception of Divine Providence. Sister Helena Maria’s premature death the next year left Father Antônio responsible for the new congregation, especially for building a convent and church adequate for their growing numbers. He served as novice master for the friars in Macacu and as guardian of St. Francis Friary in São Paulo. He founded St. Clare Friary in Sorocaba. With the permission of his provincial and the bishop, he spent his last days at the Recolhimento de Nossa Senhora da Luz, the convent of the sisters’ congregation he had helped establish. He was beatified in Rome on October 25, 1998, and canonized in 2007. COMMENT Holy women and men cannot help calling our attention to God, to God’s Creation and to all the people whom God loves. The lives of holy people are so oriented toward God that this has become their definition of "normal." Do people see my life or yours as a living sign of God’s steadfast love? What might have to change for that to happen? QUOTE During the beatification homily, Pope John Paul II quoted from the Second Letter to Timothy (4:17), "The Lord stood by me and gave me strength to proclaim the word fully," and then said that Antônio "fulfilled his religious consecration by dedicating himself with love and devotion to the afflicted, the suffering and the slaves of his era in Brazil." The pope continued, "His authentically Franciscan faith, evangelically lived and apostolically spent in serving his neighbor, will be an encouragement to imitate this ‘man of peace and charity.’"

COSMIC BOWLING BENEFIT FOR JENNY MCKERNAN

Jenny is the 11-yr. old granddaughter of long time parishioners Mary and Pat McKernan (who are also choir members). Family and friends of Jenny’s Journey will be hosting this first annual fundraising

event on Saturday Nov. 7 from 11:30am-3pm at Orland Park Bowl , 8601 W 159th St., Orland Park, to help defray medical costs and support the quality of life for Jenny, who has been diagnosed with GM1 Type 2 Gangliosidosis in September 2014. Cost of the event is $30 for adults for bowling, shoe rental and lunch; $25 for children 12-under; $25 for dinner only. GM1 is progressive. The disease, which if left untreated, worsens with time leading to eventual death. The family is in a race against time. This disease is not specific to any race, ethnicity or individual group. While uncertain what the future holds, the family is hopeful that Jenny will live many more years, perhaps even into her 20s. Each day is a new beginning. We are hopeful to somehow contribute and find a cure. Each year, the Trustee will donate a portion from the Supplemental Needs Trust to support scientific and medical research to find a cure for GM1 Gangliosidosis. It is estimated 1 in every 200,000 children may be afflicted and we want to help all those who suffer from this disease. Auburn University and University of Massachusetts believe a cure is within reach given adequate resources to bring to human clinical trials. Raffle and Door prize funds raised will go to benefit the Jenny Kim McKernan Supplemental Needs Trust. Please consider joining us for this event. We greatly thank you for supporting Jenny’s journey and her family in this time of need, and hope that you will be able to help us make this a successful fundraising event. If you’re unable to attend and would like to make a contribution please make checks payable to: The Jenny Kim McKernan Supplemental Needs Trust. If you would like tickets, please contact Mary at 708-764-4956 or Patrick at 708-494-0817.
