CORCORAN’S CORNER Teen Mission Trip… Please keep our parish teens in your prayers in the days ahead as they prepare for their Mission. This year they will be traveling to Minnesota, leaving on Sunday, July 20th and returning on Saturday, July 26th.The teens are very grateful for the financial support of the parish which makes this trip possible for them. But the teens also rely on our prayers as they undertake this endeavor. Hmmm, Is That Smoke?... Where there is smoke, there is fire. On the weekend of June 28th and 29th (when Fr. Stan Kuca was away on vacation in Poland), Fr. Bill Gubbins had become indisposed with sciatica problems. He had physically struggled while celebrating at a Funeral Mass and at the Saturday Vigil Mass, but the “the manager” [me] took him out of pitching rotation (he did not celebrate Mass at all on Sunday which he was scheduled to do). I was not around on Saturday to step up to the plate, as I had two family graduations and a wedding to attend [everything was happening on one day!]. Thankfully, the Energizer Bunny that he is, Fr. Bill Gubbins is now recharged and back in the pitching rotation. He is in the process of physical therapy for the next few weeks. This situation does raise a question that our Archdiocese has not been facing squarely for some time now. The clergy as a group is shrinking in numbers due to retirements, illness, deaths, and resignations. From June 2011 to June 2014 [the time period from one Convocation to the next] our Archdiocese buried 67 priests. Not all those who died were of retirement age. Moreover, as a group we are an aging lot. Men are being ordained later in life, there are fewer priests in their 20's, and not a lot of men in their 30's. At age 58, I am still under the median age of Archdiocesan priests. At the Convocation in June, I heard Cardinal George admit and state for the first time, that small parishes may need to be closed simply because we can not staff them any longer. The writing is on the wall. I am sharing this with you because I do not like people to be surprised when they hear of changes in our Archdiocese. Change is always difficult, but unexpected change is that much harder. Here at St. Elizabeth Seton, we may need to be conscious that a day may arise when one of the priests is away, and/or both remaining priests might

be unwell. While we need to be vigilant and plan ahead for what is foreseeable, at times things do happen. When I was an associate pastor at St. John Fisher Parish, it was a Wednesday, my day off, and Halloween was the night before [All Saints Day]. The pastor fell unexpectedly ill before the evening Vigil Holy Day Mass, and there was no other priest available in the rectory. The parishioners stepped up to the plate. The Lectors did the readings and the Eucharistic Ministers distributed Holy Communion [and the ushers took up the collection!]. The parishioners were well-trained, and made the best of an unforeseen situation. Again, all this is being shared not to panic anyone about anything. But for us as a parish to realize that business as usual in our Archdiocese is changing before our eyes, and we will all work things out together. As a Church we are creative, responsible, and generous. These qualities help us to weather change in better ways. Parish Picnic Tips… The parish picnic will be held in two weeks time, on Sunday, August 3rd beginning with Mass at 3:00 PM. There are two things you need to bring to the parish picnic: #1: A good appetite; and #2: A good attitude. To whet your appetite the Men’s Club will be offering grilled burgers. But a word to the wise... we do not know if attendance will be 100 people or 1,000 people. And we have no idea how many people will want a burger. As a result I suggest that we all follow the Boy Scout motto: “Always be prepared!” Perhaps consider the burgers as a supplement to your own delicious meal that you bring from home. As for a good attitude, the camaraderie of neighbors and parishioners, a Bean Bag Throwing Contest, a Water Balloon Toss Contest, and Fun! Fun! Fun! D.J. Loren Gent providing the tunes — will all bring smiles to faces. A few requests: the parish needs to borrow the bean bag “game stands” that so many people seem to have. Please call the parish offices [708-403-0101] if you can bring them to the picnic. We will have a member of the Men’s Club coordinating the game by showing people where to put the “game stands” and registering the participants for the contest. The entry cost for the contest is $10 per two-person team. There will be prizes for the top three winning teams.

WEDDINGS

Corcoran's Corner (continued)

Our parish Teen Club, “Branches,” will host the Water Balloon Contest. Teens should contact Mr. Bruce Hall about assist-ing in filling 100+ water balloons. It is best if people provide their own lawn chairs or blankets to sit on. A few extra fold-ing chairs will be provided for Mass, but your own lawn chairs are better and safer to sit on than the parish folding chairs. The Seniors of Seton are coordinating desserts. If you want to bring a dessert to share at the picnic, please feel free to do so. Please bring your desserts to the downstairs Church Hall. Everyone attending the picnic is welcome to have a dessert, and they will be served from the Church Hall. If anyone needs a bit of a break from the warm weather, the Church Hall will be open as a cooling center during the picnic. Comfort-able washrooms will be open both in the church and the Church Hall. Parking will be limited on the WEST side of the church, as we are inviting people with ‘antique’ cars to display them in the WEST church parking lot. If you do have an antique car and want to be part of this car show, please call the parish offices [708-403-0101] to let us know about your participation. All are welcome. If anyone has any questions, see me after Mass, or call me at the parish offices [708-403-0101]. Meanwhile I am praying for good weather: in the high 70’s or low 80’s, with low humidity and a nice breeze—perfect weather. Hey, if I am praying for good weather, I am going to go for the gold standard!

Keep Smiling,

Congratulations to the following parents on the baptism of their child on Sunday, July 13:2014: William Michael, child of Jeremy and Shannon Hartney Magdalyn Elizabeth, child of Edward Ortiz and Maria Rosolowski Lillian Marie, child of Robert and Lisa Walla Paul Mariano, child of Michael and Margaret Colston

Dear Mrs. Wisnasky and Angels,

I came to the shelter three weeks ago very

lost and afraid with three kids. It is great to

have a safe place and a roof over our heads and

beds to sleep in. People cook and serve lunch

every day. They stay in the kitchen and we line

up to get our food. Many residents said to me,

"Wait till the third Sunday of the month. You

will love the food and the group that comes."

The third Sunday came and all of you came

in smiling and the student volunteers started

playing games with the kids. Soon we were

served appetizers! What a blessing for our

hungry children. There was a disc jockey and

Bingo games. To my surprise we were served

our meal like a fancy restaurant by all in your

group — no standing in line. The food was

delicious and we were served ice cream and

cake for dessert. For the first time since I came

to the shelter I felt I was at home surrounded

by the love from all of you. We will be waiting

to see you again on the third Sunday.

Many thanks,

A Mom and Three Kids

Journey with the Lord and let your heart hear God’s Words….

By Margie Guadagno St. Elizabeth Seton Pastoral Associate

When the disciples

met Jesus

on the road,

they were

disappointed

and sad.

He walked with them

and listened to

their story.

Then, by opening up

the Scriptures

He gave them hope!

He helped them see

that they were

not abandoned

or left orphaned,

that God

was with them

and would

always be part

of their journey.

Making a Difference

S OMETIMES I MISS ALL THE COMMO-

TION THAT USED TO FILL MY HOUSE WHEN MY CHILDREN WERE YOUNG.

There were always baseball and volleyball practices, Cub Scout meetings and Pack gatherings, science projects, leaf collections, Homecoming parades/games/dances, and, of course, the occasional sleepovers. All these activities filled every free moment of time I had outside of my job. I’m glad most of them are in the past, but, there is one of them that I DO miss: the sleepovers. My twins would often invite two (and sometimes more!) of their friends over for the night. They would actually arrive early afternoon and we’d begin with dinner out at one of their favorite restaurants. I especially remember one young friend of theirs, Jessica. She became a regular at our house. She was a very nice, polite, and fun-loving young lady. But that isn’t why I re-member her. I remember her because when she would spend the night, her sister Katie, came with her. Katie was verrrry quiet and shy. She was a year younger than the other girls, but Jessica always included her be-cause her extreme shyness led her to be a 'loner' in her own class. Over the years, she seemed to open up—a little. I’m sure she was quite talkative around my girls, but with me she was always hesitant. Now that the girls are older, their contact with each other is less frequent. Most of their interac-tion is by FACEBOOK. That’s why it was such a thrill for me to run into Katie several months ago while out shopping. Katie had grown into a beautiful, self-assured young woman. We stopped for cof-fee to catch up on the latest family news. We had a wonderful visit but soon it was time to go. As we were saying our goodbyes,

she stopped and became very serious for a moment. She said to me, “Mrs. Guadagno, I want to tell you how much I appreciated being included in all those wonderful times at your house. You and Mary and Jenny al-ways made me feel so welcome—like I be-longed. It made all the difference in the world to me as I got older.” I was silent for a moment, and then, just as seriously said, “You’re very welcome, Katie. But always re-member that you DID belong!” As I drove home, I remembered thinking that no matter how much I had enjoyed those sleepovers, I never saw them as being life-changing. They were just one of those milestones you had to cross when you’re a parent. For Katie, though, they were a mile-stone that made a huge difference in her de-velopment into a lovely woman.

I THOUGHT ABOUT ALL OF THIS AFTER READING TODAY’S GOSPEL EARLIER IN THE WEEK. Jesus tells the disciples that

it is good to leave the weeds with the wheat until all are fully grown. You never know if you might make a mistake if you try to sepa-rate them because in the end, it is only God who really knows who is a weed and who is wheat. If my girls had decided that Katie could-n’t be included in their sleepovers, what a loss it would have been—for Katie AND for my girls. They chose to be patient and kind and nurture Katie rather than leave her by the wayside. Without even knowing it they were making this Gospel come alive in all our lives. I’m so glad because it makes me see that sometimes the Gospel message isn’t always about big overwhelming issues of good and evil, sometimes it is just about choosing to be on the side of patience and love.

What do we value in life? Our daily living requires us to be aware of the worth and value of things, but the things of this world are not, conversely, what are truly valuable.

NEXT WEEK: VALUING WHAT IS TRULY VALUABLE

In this Gospel there are three different allego-ries that speak about our response to an en-counter with the kingdom of God. In the first two, there is a sense of being willing to aban-don what had previously been considered to

be of prime importance in order to acquire that which is far more precious. This is more than only rejecting sin and all of its allure. It often means giving up things that are good, but not of the same value as the kingdom. When we love someone, we often have to say no to things that otherwise might have been part of our experience.

What is the kingdom of God worth to you? Throughout our lives we engage, usually subconsciously, in cost-benefit analyses, trying to balance cost and risk on the one hand with the potential gains on the other. This might seem a somewhat cold-hearted

approach to take toward faith, but Jesus' parables in this Gospel seem to imply that if we reflect on the matter we ought to see that gaining the kingdom of heaven is worth any cost, worth any risk. The great 17th century mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal is famous for his "wager" regarding religious faith. He said that if we weigh the potential benefit of faith (gaining eternal life) against the cost (a life of religious devotion) and the risk (being wrong and there being no eternal life), it seems perfectly reasonable to have faith. This is not, of course, meant to be any sort of proof of the truth of religious faith. Rather, Pascal's point is the same one made in the parables: the kingdom of heaven is something of such surpassing good that even the slightest chance of it being real should make us willing to surrender everything we have in order to gain it. Faith in an uncertainty is a small price to pay for the promise of eternal life. But even we who are believers, who have made the risky choice for faith, sometimes undervalue the gift of God's kingdom. Unlike Solomon in our first reading, we seek a long life or wealth or power over others rather than the pearl of great price, which is the wisdom of God's kingdom. Reflecting, as Pascal did, on the infinite value of what God offers us in the kingdom ought to lead us to live wholeheartedly for God.

REFLECTION

You have asked for wisdom (1 Kings 3:5, 7-12). When Solomon began his reign as king he went to the shrine in Gibeon and performed a great sacrifice, and then went to sleep. He had a dream in which the Lord asked him to request whatever he wanted. Solomon asked for wisdom so that he could rule God's people justly. Because he asked for wisdom and not for riches or victories, the Lord granted his request. Solomon was known as the wisest king on earth. Wisdom, at this time, was un-

derstood as knowing how to live the good life. Much of the accumulated wisdom of Israel was collected and today forms the latter part of the Book of Proverbs. These folk sayings were the way that the community wisdom would be passed on from one generation to the next. Solomon was known as the wisest of kings in the history of Israel. It is known, in fact, that he even collected books of wisdom from neighboring countries (e.g. Egypt).

God predestined us to be conformed to the image of the Son (Romans 8:28-30).

God foreknew us even before we existed. He called us into existence with love and predes-tined us to share in His life. (Predestination does not mean that we have to do something, only that we are invited to do it.) In other

words, God's mystery (plan) of salvation is too wonderful to understand. How could any-one love us this much? How could God invite us into His own glory? This fills us with a sense of awe and tremendous gratitude.

S

SAINT OF THE WEEK

ST. FRANCIS SOLANO (1549-1610)

Francis came from a leading family in Andalusia, Spain. Perhaps it was his popularity as a student that enabled Francis in his teens to stop two duelists. He entered the

Friars Minor in 1570, and after ordination enthusias-tically sacrificed himself for others. His care for the sick during an epidemic drew so much admiration

that he became embarrassed and asked to be sent to the African missions. Instead he was sent to South America in 1589. While working in what is now Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay, Francis quickly learned the local languages and was well received by the indigenous peoples. His visits to the sick often included playing a song on his violin. Around 1601 he was called to Lima, Peru, where he tried to recall the Spanish colonists to their baptismal integ-rity. Francis also worked to defend the indigenous peo-ples from oppression. He died in Lima and was canonized in 1726. COMMENT: Francis of Solano knew from experience that the lives of Christians sometimes greatly hinder the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Francis lived an exemplary life himself, and urged his fellow Spaniards to make their lives worthy of their Baptism QUOTE: "When Francis Solano was about to die, one of the friars asked him, 'Father, when God takes you to heaven remember me when you enter the everlasting kingdom.' With joy Francis answered, 'It is true, I am going to heaven but this is so because of the merits of the passion and death of Christ; I am the greatest of sinners. When I reach our home-land, I will be your good friend'" (contemporary biography of St. Francis Solano).

Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass The Golden 50th Wedding Anniversary Mass will be held on Sunday, Sept.14, 2014 at 2:45pm at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 N. State St., Chicago. Couples married in 1964 interested in attending this celebration should contact the Archdiocese of Chicago Marriage and Family Ministries at www.marriageandfamilyministries.org or call 312-534-8351.

Alcoholics Anonymous If you have a problem with alcohol and feel a sincere desire to stop drinking, you are welcome to attend a meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) in the Seton Church Hall on Thursdays from 7:30-8:45pm. ST. ELIZABETH SETON PARISH INFORMATION

Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered on Saturday, between 4:15-4:45pm.

Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated twice monthly at 1pm. Reserve your time by calling the Pastoral Center early. We are limited to six children per Sunday. Baptismal Couples preparing for the birth of their child should contact the Pastoral Center to register for a one night seminar, focusing on a parent’s role in faith development. This session is mandatory prior to the Baptism. Anointing of the Sick is available in the Church every Monday after the 9am Mass. For those who are ill or fac-ing hospitalization, it is appropriate to receive the sacrament once every six months. Call 708-403-0101 for information. Ministry of Care is available to give Communion to the housebound, to visit and pray for hospitalized and/or to arrange for the Anointing of the Sick. Please call the Pastoral Center for assistance. In the Hospital? Because of HIPAA Privacy regulations hospitals can no longer contact the parish regarding your hospitalization. It is the responsibility of you or a family member to notify our parish. We desire to offer whatever spiri-tual support we can. Please call the Pastoral Center. Sacrament of Marriage Couples planning to marry are asked to make arrangements six months in advance.

Wedding Workshops are offered throughout the year. They provide engaged couples with guidelines and suggestions for the celebration of the Sacrament of Marriage. The workshop covers topics ranging from readings and music to flowers and video taping.

Adult Choir sings at all 10am Sunday Masses, as well as at a number of special liturgies.

Moving? Please call the office at 708-403-0101.
