What is copyright?

• Copyright gives you ownership over the things that you have created.

• The exclusive and assignable legal right, given to the originator for a fixed number of years, to print, perform, film, or recorded literary, artistic, or musical.

• If people were to breach this they would have the problem that they could be sued by the person who owns the piece of work.

What does it protect

• Copyright protects original works of authorship fixed in any tangible medium of expression, now known or later developed, from which they can be perceived, reproduced, or otherwise communicated, either directly or with the aid of machine or device.

• Without copyright you often find that people copy your products. If you copyright it and somebody copies it you can take legal action on this person.

Examples

• With E4 you find that you have video guidelines and you have to have the consent of everyone in them.

• If you are using music you have to either get them specially composed or you have to request for copyright use of the music.

• With the BBC everything that they own is copyrighted to them as a company and you cannot download anything unless it is given authorization by them.
