A distress message should contain: a) name of the station addressed; b) identification of the aircraft; c) nature of the distress condition; d) intention of the person in command; e) position, level & heading; and f) any other useful information. Fuel Emergency The PIC shall declare a situation of Fuel emergency by broadcasting "MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY FUEL", when the calculated usable fuel predicted to be available upon landing at the nearest aerodrome where a safe landing can be made is less than the planned final reserve fuel. Minimum Fuel The PIC shall advise ATC of a minimum fuel state by declaring "MINIMUM FUEL" when, having committed to land at a specific aerodrome, the PIC calculates that any change to the existing clearance to that aerodrome may result in landing with less than planned final reserve fuel. Useful Frequencies Emergency Frequency: 121.5/ HF = 243.0 MHz (military) Pilot air to air: 123.45 IATA IFBP: 126.9 Clearances will only be issued: 1. An ATC departure clearance. 2. Clearance for Take off. 3. Clearance for an approach 4. Clearance to land. 5. An ATC arrival clearance inbound. 6. Re-clearance to a different flight level. 7. Re-clearance along a different route. Requires read back: ATC route clearance; Clearances and instructions to enter, land on, take off from, hold short of, cross and backtrack on any runway; and Runway-in-use, altimeter settings, SSR codes, level instructions, heading & speed instructions, transition levels. Speeds In most countries there is a hard speed restriction of 250kts below 10 000ft or FL100, that needs to be adhered to even when told "no speed restrictions" by ATC. However, this is not applicable to all countries. Note: Cancellation of any speed control instruction does not relieve the flight crew of compliance with speed limitations associated with airspace classifications as specified in Annex 11 — Air Traffic Services, Appendix 4. The word "MAYDAY" spoken at the start identifies a distress message, and the words "PAN PAN“ spoken at the start identifies an urgency message. The words "MAYDAY" or "PAN PAN", as appropriate, should preferably be spoken three times at the start of the initial distress or urgency message. Fuel Emergency The PIC shall declare a situation of Fuel emergency by broadcasting"MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY FUEL", when the calculated usable fuel predicted to be available upon landing at the nearest aerodrome where a safe landing can be made is less than the planned final reserve fuel. Minimum Fuel The PIC shall advise ATC of a minimum fuel state by declaring "MIN IMUM FUEL" when, having committed to land at a specific aerodrome, the PIC calculates that any change to the existing clearance to that aerodrome may result in landing with less than planned final reserve fuel.
