HOW DOES THE 43 TRAINING SCHEDULE WORK?

The training starts with elementary flying, getting you to point where you can safely take-off, land and navigate in visual conditions (i.e .. Not in clouds) and progresses all the way to the point whereby you can safely and proficiently fly a multi engine aircraft in weather conditions that require you to fly with sole reference to the instrumentation inside the cockpit.

Our philosophy is to give you a genuine operational capability, this is, to teach you to do the job you are Licensed to do, and do it well.

All our Flight Instructors (50 plus) are employed full-time. 43 trains & develops each Instructor that is employed at the school. Our training programs are carefully monitored by Flight Managers and our unique Flight Standards Instructors, who are responsible to perform any remedial training that may be required.

SUBJECTS COVERED

Human Performance Pilots operate during the day, night, in clouds

and limited visibility, plus fly at high altitudes. This subject covers topics such as the eyes, the respiratory system, fatigue, high altitude physiology etc.

Meteorology Is the study of the weather. It is extremely

important to understand the weather as it affects how we plan and conduct flights.

Principles of Flight This subject is basically the study of

Aerodynamics, how the aircraft is able to fly and aerodynamic principles that pilots must understand.

Aircraft Technical & General Covers how aircraft are constructed and the

various systems that are employed, such as the electrical, hydraulic, pneumatics etc. plus learn about aircraft engines, from simple piston engines to jet engines.

Navigation Flying involves traveling from A to B, this subject

teaches you about the principles of navigation and how to apply the principles as pilots.

Flight Planning How much fuel must the pilot load? How many

passengers can be carried? Is the runway long enough? Flight planning covers the A–Z of how to plan a flight safely.

Air Law Airlaw is studied to understand the regulations

that apply to flying and operating aircraft both domestically and internationally. Operational Procedures covers the regulations pertaining to Instrument Flying Procedures.

Restricted Radio License Basic Aviation Telephony is covered.

Standard Operating Procedures

The “how-to” operate an aircraft is standardised.

5 Phases43 Air School is the first Aviation Training Organisation in South Africa to be approved to conduct integrated flight training by the South African Civil Aviation Authority.

Integrated training is a relatively new concept in South Africa, so this guide clarifies what the training program involves, how long the course takes and compares the Integrated ATPL program to the Modular training route.

This course is specifically designed for students wanting to become professional airline pilots.

You do not need to have any prior flying training experience to join the Jet Pilot Program, as the course is classed as an Ab Initio course (latin for “from the beginning”)

As with any pilot training course, you should have passed Mathematics, Physics (recommended only) and English, at a school leaving level (secondary school level).

This is because the theoretical subjects that are required to be completed do require an understanding of these subjects.

At the end of this phase you will hold a Commercial Pilot’s License, Multi Engine Instrument Rating and as you have completed the ATPL subjects, you will have what is termed a “Frozen ATP”.

MODULE 2 AIRLINE PILOT PREPARATION PROGRAMME

The objective of this phase is to establish a sound technical knowledge of the

aircraft type. This type technical foundation will provide the understanding required to effectively function as a crew member on the aircraft type.

This technical knowledge competency is achieved in 3 ways:

1 Full Type Technical course Computer Based Training (CBT) Lectures

2 Simulator “walk through” of all technical systems

3 Technical systems exam

The simulator sessions will be supported by Computer Based Training (CBT), lecture and briefing time.

TECHNICAL FAMILIARISATION

TWOFLIGHT MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS & AUTO FLIGHT SYSTEMS

This module introduces the basic functionalities of the Flight Management

System and Auto flight System of the Boeing (B738) or Airbus (A320). This training is a requirement to take full benefit of the subsequent phases. In order to be able to control the aircraft in flight to a level that further learning can take place, these two core elements of any modern aircraft need some sort of basic understanding and familiarization.

The simulator sessions will be supported by Computer Based Training (CBT), lecture and briefing time.

This is the very heart of the Airline Pilot Preparation Phase. During this phase core

competencies of aircraft handling, flight path management and Airline standard operational practices are developed.

The following elements are covered:

1 Introduction to the Boeing/Airbus Operator SOP and operational philosophy

2 EFIS flight deck operations3 Jet aircraft handling4 Spectrum of aircraft approaches5 Levels of aircraft management automation

The Jet Pilot Program seamlessly bridges the gap between traditional flight training “passage to the right seat” and industry end requirement through the incorporation of the latest training to enhance the pilot’s skill and prepare them for their career in airline aviation.

The Airline Pilot Preparation program (APPP) is specifically designed to take the candidate from single pilot Commercial Pilot License (CPL)/ Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) level and deliver them to a point of readiness to complete an airline operator type rating program.

This is the proof of the overall holistic competency gained. The phase consists of

four Line Orientated Evaluation sessions flown with a type rated Line Captain. This P1 position could be facilitated by 43 Air School, or by the operator sponsoring the training. The latter case will allow the operator an “insider’s view” of the candidate’s operational competency.

Moreover, the operator may want to use this “inside view” opportunity as part of the integrated assessment and finishing training on type within the company.

This module culminates with a session of consolidation, followed by the Type Preparedness check.

The simulator session will be supported by CBT, lecture and Briefing time.

This module introduces non-normal procedures in a systematic way. Firstly, the

major handling abnormalities are mastered:

1 Engine Failure/Fire: phases of flight2 Pressurization3 Rejected Take Off4 Related non-normal procedures

This is further enhanced by revisiting the Multi Crew Co-operation (MCC) elements and principles of non-normal operations during the pre-course Airline Preparation Training program. The Boeing or Airbus philosophy of non-normal operations is re-emphasized.

To assure competency, this phase is completed with several LOFT sessions which include a spectrum of events requiring the application of MCC principles to conclude the safety of flight and commercial requirements.

SESSION 1 Dynamic HandlingThis session, consolidates the Jet Handling and Instrument Approach phase in the Full Motion (FFS) device. Familiarizing the student with the aircraft handling characteristics in a dynamic nature.

SESSION 2 Prof Check (OPC) Day 1This session, includes the opportunity for an employing carrier to observe and evaluate the candidates ability to operate a Boeing (B738)/ Airbus (A320), within their specific Operating criteria. This includes both normal and non-normal operations, and consolidates all the Advanced concepts. The evaluation can be conducted by either a Manning Captain or a Recruitment specialist in the observer seat.

SESSION 3 Profciency Check (OPC)

Day 2 This is the licensing action required by the regulator, to satisfy, the skills test element for issuing of a Type Rating. An instrument revalidation can also be conducted at this point.

SESSION 4 Base Training Depending on the operator and regulator, base training is required to be conducted in a Full Flight Simulator before Line Flying (Training) can commence.

MODULE 3 TYPE RATING

A PILOT LIVES IN A WORLD OF PERFECTION, OR NOT AT ALL.RICHARD S. DRURY, ‘MY SECRET WAR’

The Type Rating Module is conducted on the Level D Full Flight Simulator. This is the final phase of training and concludes with the candidate having received their full SA CAA Boeing (B738) or Airbus (A320) Type Rating.

This phase consists of 4 sessions of 4 hours each.

1 How old do I need to be to start training?

The min. age requirement is 17 years on completion age for a Private Pilot License, & 18 years old for a Commercial Pilot License or Frozen ATPL.

2 What are the min. Educational Requirements?

We suggest a C+ in School graduating Core Mathematics, Physical Science & English.

3 What if I didn’t take Core Mathematics & Physical Science?

We would advise that you first achieve this requirement, although not a prerequisite it is highly recommended.

4 Other than my school subjects, what else do I need to qualify for enrollment?

You will need to pass an aviation medical exam (done by an Aviation Medical Examiner) and an English Proficiency test. These are included in your course fees, however, should you have any pre-existing medical conditions we would strongly suggest that you have your medical done before you arrive.

5 What conditions could prevent me from obtaining an Aviation Medical?

Colour Blindness, Diabetes (Type 1), Epilepsy and Lung/Cardiac disorders to mention a few.

6 What Qualifcations does 43 offer?

We offer Private and Commercial Pilot Licenses, Airline Pilot’s License, as well as Air Traffic control training and aircraft maintenance courses.

7 How do I enroll for a course?

Sign all the pages of estimate sent to you and return them to us, along with the following documents:

Copy of your ID/Passport, School leaving Certificate, Copy of your Medical Aid Cover, & Proof of payment for your Deposit (to secure your enrollment).

8 Do I need to have a Study Visa?

If you are a foreign student, you will need to have a study visa to study at 43 Air School, valid for a 24 Month period.

9 Do you offer Sponsorships or Bursaries?

Unfortunately we do not offer Bursaries or Sponsorships as we are not the user of the end product.

10 What is a Assessment?

COMPASS (Computerized Pilot Aptitude Screening System) is a PC-based pilot selection tool that fulfills the need for a reliable, objective, scientifically proven and cost-effective screening method.

11 What does a Assessment test?

COMPASS consists of six tests which have been developed to test some of the key aptitude areas for professional pilots.

The tests include:

Control: a co-ordination task looking at basic hand / foot / eye co-ordination.

Slalom: a tracking task looking at hand / eye co-ordination.

Mathematics: a test of basic applied mathematical understanding and speed

Memory: accuracy of short-term memory recall and ability to process information.

Task Manager: a test of the candidate’s ability to scan the screen and manage two concurrent tasks accurately and quickly.

Orientation: instrument interpretation, comprehension and spatial orientation.

Tech-Test: technical comprehension test (physics test).

Aviation-English: test English language ability, including recognizing ATC radio messages.

Verbal reasoning: the ability of the candidate to understand, analyze and logically interpret written information.

A Checklist Professional Profile is also drawn up, displaying expanded details on subjects like personal and relational competencies and potential misbalances, followed by a conclusion and advice.

These competencies include:

12 How does the assessment beneft me?
