COPANS ROAD IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

From NW 49 Terrace to NW 42 Ave

Public Concerns and outcome from March meeting:

• Reduced speed and narrow lanes: collaboration with City to keep

existing 45 mph and 11’ lanes

• Increased noise and landscape/berm impacts, difficult to exit

from community: EB lane addition not proposed, noise will not be

increased, minimize landscaping/berm impact

• Westbound merge condition: changed to drop lane condition

• Need right-turn lane into Township Circle: added

• Shift bus stops: coordinated with BC Transit and bus stop at SE

corner has been shifted to the east and bus stop at NW corner has

been shifted to the south

TRAFFIC STUDY

• Traffic Study recommends addition of EB and WB through lanes and

maximize storage of left turn lanes

• Updated design: add WB lane through lane and maximize storage of

left turn lanes

COPANS ROAD IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

From NW 49 Terrace to NW 42 Ave

• Main objective: relieve traffic congestion at the intersection, reduce CO2 emissions,

and minimize delays for emergency vehicles responding to the needs of residents in

the area

• Add additional WB through-lane, maximize left-turn storage to reduce congestion

• Collaboration with City: keep 45 mph speed limit and 11’ through-lane widths

• Reduce impact on outside landscaping and berm by minimizing medians

• Few impacted trees will be relocated or replaced with new

• Mill & resurface existing road pavement to extend service life

• New mast arms at Copans Road and Lyons Road Intersection

• Improve drainage system

• ADA improvements

• Install new signing and pavement markings to re-align the lanes

• Incorporate complete streets elements: 10’ shared use path on both sides of the

road, delineated for bicyclists and pedestrians

4

EXISTING CONDITIONS

1) 2-lane roadway in each direction without curb and gutter

2) Missing sidewalk and bike facility
