“Mr Fratti has completed his probationary year of teaching with excellent results, “said Mr Scotton, “we welcome him as a permanent member of the teaching fraternity.”

Principal’s Report

Sport is an important part of our vibrant curriculum at Coomealla High School. Sport teaches many things, successful teamwork, pride in performance, pushing for personal best and a healthy lifestyle are just some of the benefits of a good sports program. It is with great pleasure that I can tell you that our sports program has grown significantly this year and given students many opportunities to excel.

Given our location competition against other schools in NSW has been limited. For a number of reasons our links with Mildura schools had also diminished. This year, however, new avenues have been opened. We are competing regularly with schools in Broken Hill and have again linked up with schools in Mildura to provide an active interschool competition.

In football both our boys and girls teams have been active. The boys recently travelled to Broken Hill and took on Willyama High School in the Swan Shield. The girls went into Mildura and took part in a round robin competition against several Victorian schools. While the results did not quite go our way all of the students involved enjoyed representing their school.

In soccer we sent out two boys teams to Mildura and they also played several games in the one day. In the near future we will be sending over thirty girls across the river to play netball against interstate competition. Occasions such as these instil school pride amongst our students and give them memories they will always have of their time at school.

In amongst all of this we also held a very successful cross country carnival which the students enjoyed. While on the subject of carnivals, our athletics carnival takes place early next term over two days. The first carnival is Monday, July 25 and the second day is Monday, August 1.

None of these sporting activities would take place without the dedicated work of our staff. They take the time to organise and coach teams who go on to represent our school. They arrange our sports carnivals which run so smoothly, and give our students opportunities to shine. I would like to express my thanks to the staff who volunteer to run teams and arrange events. Without your hard work this important part of our partnership would not be nearly as strong.

CHS Canteen

I would like to congratulate Anna Hansen for the great start she has made in her position of Coomealla High School Canteen Manager. She has introduced a new canteen menu including meatball subs, spaghetti, soup and the intriguingly named ‘spudsters’. With the start of winter students will appreciate these warm offerings.

Anna has great vision for the canteen and at present is trying to source freezers, and warmers. She is in need of a bain-marie to keep the hot meals warm. If anyone knows of the availability of one could they please contact the school.

As always we are in need of parents and community members to assist in the canteen. If you are available and would like to help out please contact the school on 5027 4506 and we will put you in touch with Anna.

Relay for Life 2011 Report by Jessica Lush on her team

‘Happily Ever After’.

Happily Ever After was a team consisting of 26 members. The vast majority were Year 10 students: Ellen Fraser, Taylah Chatterton, Jess Medaglia, Riley Riordan, Dylan Darby, Sarah Clothier, Sarah Watts, Georgie Bezzina, Laura Bysouth, William Andriske, Ash Cameron, Emily Duck, Cassie Timpano, Tori Osborn, Molly Stephens, Holly Lush and Jess Lush. Our team also included friends from surrounding schools. We raised $2,792.15 in total. A very successful effort. We would like to thank everybody for their support, all the parents who stayed part or the whole night, thanks for the contribution allowing us to participate in 2011's Relay For Life. Thanks to Nicole Fraser for supplying homemade pasta.

Update from the Cancer Council just recently. They thanked all 92 teams that participated in this year’s Relay for Life event in Mildura. The grand total for Mildura was $96,252.70 raised.

The school team COD Commanders final total was $3,789.70, an amazing effort for a great cause.

Swan Shield – Broken Hill

The Coomie boys travelled to Broken Hill on Thursday, May 19 to compete against Willyama High in the Swan Shield Competition. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a win to Coomie for this year, but the experience was worthwhile for the boys, being able to compete against a team from outside our area.

There were some standout efforts from the boys. Connor Darby dominated in the ruck and around the ground; Zach Holland, Mathew Smith and Jack Bottrell did well in the backline for their size, Justin Redpath went hard for the ball, Bailey Chatterton and Bailey Tyers did well in attacking the ball and getting it out to our players. Jacob Watt ran all day and Nathaniel Warren started to get his game going as time went on. Aaron Duck, Thomas Christensen and Nick Cottrell tried hard against their opponents. Oliver Mangan had a go and also used his voice well in letting players know they were clear. Jordan McKinnon chipped in with a couple of goals and Dean Garraway and Zack Symes contested well in the forward lines. Zack Chislett was tried in a couple of positions to use his size to try to combat the Willyama boys.

Overall, it was a real workout for the Coomie boys against a taller side with some classy key position players, but that’s how it goes, so a big well done for your efforts lads and we’ll try again next year. Thanks to Mr Driscoll for coaching the boys; thanks to Dylan Darby for being the runner/water and Jake Wakefield for helping with the water. A big thank you to Mr Gee for driving the bus; also to Russ Pardoe for accompanying the boys.

Footy Report On Monday, May 16 a team of dedicated and hard working girls participated in the girls interschool football competition. Previous to this competition the girls had been training during lunch times with the assistance of our Year 11 Sports Coaching Class. On the night of the competition the girls went very well and improved as the night progressed. The girls played four teams on the night: St Joes, Senior College, Irymple Secondary and Red Cliffs Senior College. It was a great effort from all the girls and they were a great group to coach, and we all had fun on the night. We would like to thank all the people who helped, including Mr Dicker for umpiring, Mr Driscoll who assisted us coaching and Mrs Barker for organising the event and training. (Justin Freeman and Dylan Tyers)

Girls Football We recently played four games

against Irymple, St Joes, Senior College and Red Cliffs. We scored two points in the game against Irymple. A huge thank you to Mrs Barker, Mr Driscoll, Mr Dicker, our

coaches and our ‘spirit’ guide Laurie. We couldn’t have played without your help and organisation.

Interschool Junior and Intermediate Soccer 2011 24/5/11 Soccer Park Mildura Assembly Report

Junior Division (Mr Celegon Supervising) The team was Justin Redpath, Derek Smith (captain), Philip Smith, Jake Cumming, Austin Bennett, Oliver Mangan, Anthony Whitehair, Patrick McMahon, Dylan Watson (vice captain), Nathaniel Whitburn, Rhys Christian. We had a slow start against Red Cliffs because most of this team have not played competition soccer before, but we did manage to hold them to 2-1 at half time after a great dodging run and goal from Rhys. In the second half we got more organised, allowing the backline (led by great defense from Pat McMahon) to control them better – we had our opportunities, but it finished 3-1. We started better against Irymple, but didn’t stick to the plan resulting in 2 goals from unmarked Irymple players. In the second half, we played to the plan – fine work from Pat again and Jake Cumming ensured they did not score again. Due to the drive Derek Smith was giving us from the middle we had a few chances which we couldn’t put away. An unexpected third match saw our best of the day. It was really open, exciting soccer played end to end. In the first half we missed at least 3 opportunities which ended up costing us the game, but the second half saw Rhys Christian in top form scoring two runaways and Dylan Watson scoring the goal of the day, a curling screamer into the top corner from about 13 metres. A 9 goal thriller was a good way to end the day, and well done to the team for keeping it positive, giving their all for their school and making it a fun day for the coach!!

Intermediate Division (Mr Fratti Supervising)

The team was Ashley Watson (captain), Toby Hederics (vice captain), Corey Henderson, Sam Clyne, Zak Russell, Riley Riordan, Zac Chislett, Dylan Darby, Ryan Tilley, Sam Perry, Jak Roberts and Matt Rohde-Symes. It was always going to be a tough day at the office in this division – only three of our team were regular players of soccer, the rest enthusiastic and fit footballers but not familiar with the structures and skills of soccer. The other schools came peppered with some of the best and brightest Senior Club players, and in such a short format they were able to play every minute at full speed which is very hard to counter. What we don’t lack, though, is competitive spirit. After allocating field positions for the day and a crash course on the rules, we faced St Josephs. After a slow start we hit our stride and they quickly learned we were not a team to take lightly. Jak Roberts owned the goals and kept them out regularly. Corey Henderson and Ash Watson were major assets in defence, and Riley Riordan and Sam Clyne worked really hard in midfield. A two goal loss in the finish really seemed to motivate the boys for the next match where we were dominant against Holy Trinity, not really even letting them out of their own half for a great 3-0 win. The match v Red Cliffs was our best of the day (and one of the best of the tournament), though the outbreak of AFL style play among friends (we knew a few of their players) almost caused the Red Cliffs coach to forfeit. Thankfully the game was completed at 0-0 after regular time, going to penalties where it was 4-4 until Coomealla completely missed the last shot – Red Cliffs nailed it and the points. By the time we faced up against Irymple the cold day was also rainy which dulled our athletic advantage, brought us some injuries and allowed them to outclass us cracking 7 home. On a brighter note, Sam Clyne did score one for Coomie. By the time we faced Chaffey (the eventual tournament winners), we were pretty tired having no bench players for rotations. They too were way too classy for us, easily getting 7 past us by the time we had to end early to make the bus in time to get back, though it is disappointing to note Ash Watson sustained an injury as ‘keeper’ due to a very late and unnecessary foul from a Chaffey player. Being the sportsman he is, Ash played on to the end.

Mr Fratti and Mr Celegon were very proud of both teams today – they played with ticker, spirit and fairness and everyone was a fine ambassador for his school. Thanks too go to Mark Alvey for his coaching role with the boys over the last few weeks at Sport.

School on Tour Success

On Friday, May 20, Coomealla High School’s inaugural School on Tour hit the road to visit four primary schools over the course of one day. School on Tour is a travelling concert to promote public education and the opportunities available at your local high school.

We visited Gol Gol, Buronga, Wentworth and Dareton Primary Schools during the all singing, all dancing tour, and we were most impressed by the wonderful reception received at each school. The ‘tour’ also afforded Ms Crowley a chance to liaise with teachers of Year 6 students. Mrs Ward was wonderful on the day, driving the bus and also contributing with a performance.

“I was very pleased with the cooperation and teamwork displayed by the group,” said Mr Scotton, “whether in the band or the dance group, everyone helped with set-up and pack-up at each venue, it was a cohesive group that grew in confidence throughout the day. Thank you to the staff and students at all the schools for making Coomealla High so welcome.”

The school hopes to take a similar tour on the road during Education Week later in the year.

Try a Trade

Last Friday May, 27 SMGT and VECCI organized an event at their new Trade Centre in the Crescent, Mildura. They had a range of trade people from local businesses running hands-on activities for our students to try. These trades activities included: brick laying, plastering, painting and decorating, hospitality, business services, hair dressing, make-up, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, automotive and horticulture. Twenty four of our Year 9 and 10 students chose to attend.

The students enjoyed the event and this ‘sample’ of a trade

may help them decide on a future career.

MY FETTUCCINE CARBONARA

Ingredients:

2 rashers bacon

200g fettuccine

1 egg

2 Tbs grated fresh Parmesan Cheese

3/4 cup cream

Black pepper

Method:

1. Trim bacon and cut into chunks. Fry in frypan over medium heat until crispy, remove and drain on a paper towel.

2. Boil a large pot of water, add a splash of olive oil and a pinch of salt and cook the fettuccine for 9-10 minutes, or until ‘al dente’. Drain and return to pot to keep warm.

3. Beat the egg, cheese and cream in a bowl, then add the bacon. Pour over the pasta in the pot and toss gently with tongs.

4. Return the pan to a very low heat and cook for 1-2 minutes, or until slightly thickened—don’t overheat or the egg will scramble. Season well with black pepper and serve.
