The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to 16 years in recognition of the im- portance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books before the 2 nd of September 2016. Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victo- rian Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll. If you would like your child/children’s name included on this please return the privacy and consent form. Spare forms are available from the office. For more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge and to view the booklists, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc Last week I had a wonderful week away with 29 grade 6 students. We explored Canberra and learnt a lot about our nation’s capital city. I would like to acknowledge how well they all behaved as we visited old and new parliament houses, the electoral commission, CSIRO, Australian Institute of Sport, and many other places and also as we sat and ate with other schools for breakfast and dinner. Our knowledgeable bus driver complimented us on the students good behaviour and how well-mannered they were as well as receiving compli- ments from the various places we visited. Well done Grade 6. You are fantastic ambassadors for our school. Also last week grade 3 and 5 students completed the annual NAPLAN testing. It was a big four days and their persistence, resilience and organisation for the day should be commended. This week Ms Seiffert was successful in receiving a grant, this will be spent on purchasing more musi- cal instruments for our school. This is a great opportunity to further build on providing a quality music program to the students of Mildura Primary School. On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of taking Xavier Price and Morgan Tanuvasa to the District school cross country competition. They both ran well against the other Mildura School students. Xavier qualified to head off to compete in St. Arnaud in two weeks’ time. All the best Xavier. David Midgley

Grade 6 Canberra Camp 2016 Students in Grade 6 from our school have recently undertaken, an education tour of the national capital. Stu-dents were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Austral-ia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. Students visited Parliament House, Electoral Education Centre, Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parlia-ment House, Australian Institute of Sport, CSIRO Discovery, Australian War Memorial, National Film and Sound Archive, National Gallery of Australia, National Museum of Australia, National Capital Exhibition at Re-gatta Point, Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre and Mount Ainslie Lookout at night. The students also got the chance to go Ice Skating and drive past many other significant landmarks in Can-berra such as the High Court of Australia, National Library and Lake Burley Griffin. All students behaved in an outstanding manner and thoroughly enjoyed the experience and opportunity. Many laughs were had by all and shared moments that will be treasured for a lifetime. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributed funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards students costs. The rebate has been paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Division Cross Country On Tuesday 17th May the Division Cross Country was held in beau-tiful weather at the Aerodrome Ovals. We only had two students qualify for this year’s event, Xavier Price and Morgan Tanuvasa. Both students ran in the 9/10 year old Sunraysia Division event. Morgan finished in 51st position while Xavier ran a fantastic race crossing the line in 8th position. Both students were perfectly be-haved whilst attending the event. Xavier now gets to compete at the Regional Cross Country event to be held in St Arnaud on the 31st May.

FOOTBALL All of the boys were excited to play their first game of interschool football for the season. In preparation we reviewed a few of the rules, and drew comparisons to rugby as many of our play-ers are more aware of the rules of rugby. Mildura South made a flying start, kicking 6 goals to our single behind in the first quarter. Although Mildura South continued to score heavily throughout the game the Mildura Primary boys improved as the game went on. Tyrik and Johnny started winning the ball around the ground as Johnny put his rug-by 'fend off' to good use. Coby, Michael and Bruce also got more involved as the game progressed and they were able to use their skills to keep possession of the ball. Although the final margin was greater than 100 points, our boys should be proud as they never gave up. They will be better off for this experience.

Netball On Friday 6th of May, girls from Grades 5 and 6 took part in their first Interschool Sport experience for the year held at Mildura South Primary. With the sun out, the girls were ready to play their first game of netball as a team. Both teams played incredibly well and were able to create great passages play up and down the court. While both teams had a loss, their co-operation as a team was exceptional. The girls look forward to competing against other schools, practicing their skills and continuing working together as a team. Great effort girls!!

Boy’s Soccer On Friday the 6th of May the MPS Boy’s Soccer team played their first game against Mildura South Primary at their school. The first half was a very one-sided affair with MPS completely dominating the game to lead 3

nil at half time. The Mildura South boy’s came out after half time in a very attacking frame of mind, repeatedly taking shots on goals and quickly levelling the score 3 all. MPS boy’s lifted once more and found the back of the net to take the score to 4 – 3 our way. Unfortunately in the dying moments of the game Mildura South were able to once again score. As the final whistle blew scores were tied. Final score was MPS 4, Mildura South 4. The better players for Mildura were Belal Safdari, Aryan Shujaee and Jayco Gadeanang. The boy’s all played really well and tried their best throughout the entire match. We are all looking forward to our next game.

Girls Soccer On Friday 6th May, the Girls Soccer team travelled to Mildura South Primary. On a very warm day the girls played extremely well. Captained by Shamia, we won 6-0. The goals were kicked by Shakayla and Brandy with 2 goals each, Crystal O and May 1 goal each. Everyone showed great sportsmanship and teamwork.
