This database provides information on two medicines (methadone and buprenorphine ) which are used for the treatment of opioid dependence, and morphine which is used for the relief of pain. These medicines are controlled substances under the international drug control conventions. These medicines are not available in many countries due to a range of issues, including the cost of medicines and difficulties with procurement. This database aims to raise awareness of current prices and sources of methadone, buprenorphine, and morphine in order to increase their availability.

Opioid substitution therapy with methadone and/or buprenorphine is an effective, evidence-based treatment for opioid dependence. It helps to reduce the transmission of HIV among injecting drug users. In 2005, WHO added methadone and buprenorphine to the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.

The WHO/HIV Department, in collaboration with the WHO Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse and the Department of Medicines Policy and Standards, is collecting information from the pharmaceutical companies producing and distributing methadone, buprenorphine, or morphine. This data includes, the available forms and formulations, procurement issues, registration procedures and prices. This database will provide countries and organizations purchasing these essential medicines with information to improve access to these medications.
