ISSUE ONE JULY 2012

The first issue of Business Brief takes a more focused look at the achievements of the Faculty in the past few months, including the Achievers’ Dinner to acknowledge the contributions of staff and students to excellence in scholarship, research, community engagement, and teaching and learning. The Big Walk promoted staff wellness and community social responsibility beyond the university borders. This is an indication that the Faculty and CPUT are not just at the heart of technology in Africa, but also have a commitment to becoming a great faculty in a university of technology that is in the service of humanity. The Faculty is serious about internationalisation also, as we have given our ubuntu to international exchange students from our partner universities in Sweden, the Netherlands and Germany. We are becoming a preferred destination for student exchange in the region, as one of the students has stated that: ‘I will definitely recommend CPUT to my friends back home and to any students at my university who want to participate in

a university exchange programme in Africa. In the Faculty, the staff members are very professional and love their work – and the diverse cultures of Cape Town make it a fascinating destination.’

Reputable international organisations such as the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS), in their 80th year of existence, have approved the Faculty of Business as an international study and examination centre. Similarly, SAP has acknowledged CPUT as a scholarly beacon in Africa – we are the university with the most qualified lecturers in SAP TERP 10 in the world.

As the world recovers from the recession and responds to shifting demands, it is expected that the Faculty will lead the way in creating futures by making our qualifications the professions of choice. This means we not only produce employable graduates, but also promote ethics and justice as critical concerns in business

education. The recent visit to the University of Washington and Highline Community College was aimed at finding the balance: how we can produce students that are employable not only in their country’s markets but also in global markets, and who are both critical and civic-minded. The involvement of students in entrepreneurial activities, doing community projects as part of their work-integrated learning, and building a business school that does not only depend on an MBA, but also on other management and business programmes, is what is happening in Ivy League institutions around the world.

I hope you enjoy the first issue, and we welcome your feedback.

The Faculty of Business hosted its annual Achievers’ Dinner at the Hotel School in Granger Bay on Friday 2 March 2012.

This annual event celebrates staff achievements in various categories such as teaching, research, and community engagement, with the Faculty sponsoring prizes ranging from R10 000 to R15 000 to the various category winners.

Associate Dean, Ivan van der Heever, acted as master of ceremonies, introducing Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Technology Innovation and Partnerships, Dr Chris Nhlapo, as well as the keynote speaker, Chairman of Council, Mr Mbulelo Bikwani.

The nominees were presented with certificates to reward their work in the Faculty, while the category winners each received an engraved trophy.

One of the front runners in the achievement awards was Prof Simeon Davies, Head of the Department of Sport Management, who received three awards: Researcher of the Year, Head of Department of the Year, and Departmental Award for Research.

The Hotel School also scooped awards in two categories relating to community engagement.

In his vote of thanks, the Dean, Prof Mzikayise Binza, reiterated that everyone was a winner and that he appreciated the hard work and collaborative efforts in the Faculty. Partnerships with other faculties, particularly Informatics and Design, were proposed to strengthen ties and realise the institutional vision.

One of the Faculty’s own postgraduate students, Ifriky Tadadjeu Sokeng, provided entertainment in the form of three classical renditions.

Dr Robertson Khan Tengeh

Faculty awards doctorate toROBERTSON khAN TENgEhRobertson Khan Tengeh was awarded the DTech: Public Management, at the April 2012 graduation ceremony for his thesis, ‘A business framework for the effective start-up and operation of African immigrant-owned businesses in the Cape Town metropolitan area, South Africa’.

He was born in Bamenda, located in the north-west province of Cameroon. He

completed high school at the Cameroon College of Arts, Science and Technology in Bambili, and was selected to read for a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics at the University of Buea (the first English-language university in Cameroon), where in 1996 he graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Economics.

In 1997, Mr Tengeh immigrated to South Africa where he obtained a BTech and an MTech degree in Business Administration at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). Growing up in a family of entrepreneurs, he has been actively involved in the information technology and event management industries, as an entrepreneur.

The role that immigrant entrepreneurs play in social and economic development in their host countries is difficult to ignore. The research study’s focus was on African immigrants utilising their entrepreneurial resources with emphasis on finance, the role of the family, ethnic networking, and business skills to start up and operate successful businesses.

Emanating from his research, Dr Tengeh has presented a paper at an international conference. One academic paper has already been published and a further two papers are presently being reviewed by two accredited journal editorial boards.

The thesis was jointly supervised by Prof Harry Ballard and Prof André Slabbert.

Ms Katsch registered for the ND: Event Management in 2009 and obtained distinctions in 21 of the 23 subjects, with an aggregate of 84.48 percent over the three years of study. She was also awarded the ‘student of the year’ award for Cooperative Learning in 2011.

During her three years of study she organised, together with other event management students, events to benefit the Sunflower Fund as well as the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. She is currently registered at CPUT for the BTech Tourism in Event Management.

International exchange students from Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands in the Faculty of Business, went on the Peninsula & Cultural Tour on Wednesday 11 April 2012.

They visited the District Six Museum to view the artefacts, and to understand the effects of the Group Areas Act on the residents of District Six.

The tour proceeded along the Atlantic seaboard to Maidens Cove for a photo session, after which the students visited the kramat at Oudekraal where Dr Reedwaan Ismail related the history of slavery and the role of kramats in the Western Cape.

The Imizamayethu walking tour in Hout Bay was next, to experience how people live and the challenges they face living in a township. After a visit to Hout Bay harbour, the tour proceeded to Groot Constantia to visit the slave photo exhibition.

The 13th annual 10km Big Walk, sponsored by Sunshine D and Polar Ice Cream, took place on Sunday 4 March 2012. A group of 30 Faculty of Business staff members participated, by walking 10km from the Cape Town stadium in Green Point along the Sea Point promenade, and back to the urban park adjacent to the stadium.

The event was a fund-raiser for the Red Cross Children’s Hospital and a community library on the Cape Flats, and well over R20 000 was raised.

Head of the Faculty’s Strategic Projects and Initiatives, Dr Reedwaan Ismail, who rallied the staff members, says that participating was great fun. Thirty members signed up, with the Faculty funding the entry fees. Each participant received a medal, and the participating staff met for lunch at the Cape Town Hotel School to share their experiences.

‘It was certainly a wonderful initiative to participate in an event like this, and we shall definitely be participating again next year,’ says Dr Ismail. ‘We hope to get more staff to sign up and will ask students to assist in manning the water points for walkers.’

The Dean, Prof Binza, was warmly thanked for his support, as well as the Marketing and Communication Department for branded items worn by staff.

The Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply Southern Africa (CIPS SA) recently signed an MoU with CPUT.

‘Our vision as a faculty is to be a leading provider of business education in Africa and beyond,’ according to Prof Mzikayise Binza, Dean of the Faculty of Business. Having undertaken the rigorous application process, CPUT is now an approved CIPS Study Centre, joining an elite group of institutions that offer CIPS’s international courses in southern Africa.

‘We are very pleased about this partnership, as this will provide avenues for our learners to study further after completion of CIPS courses, starting in the second half of 2012. Articulation is a main focus area for us at the moment, and we are looking forward to working together not only in South Africa, but also in the rest of Africa,’ said Carin Stoltz-Urban, CIPS SA Head of Professional Development and Education.

Mr André Coetzee, MD of CIPS Africa, commented that CIPS Southern Africa is eager to explore ways in which the

two organisations can support each other in issues of mutual interest, such as responsible business practice, ethics, green procurement and sustainability, and stated that they would appreciate CPUT’s support in this strategic initiative.

The appointment of the Faculty of Business as an approved international CIPS Study and Examination Centre was finalised on Tuesday 10 April with the signing of the MoU. The Faculty will be presenting the internationally accredited CIPS programmes from July 2012, subject to Council for Higher Education accreditation.

A group of lecturers in the Faculty successfully completed the professional Systems, Applications and Products in Data Processing (SAP) certification programme, TERP 10.

The ten-day training course on Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) teaches participants basic business processes used in a variety of fields such as accounting, procurement and manufacturing.

The lecturers who completed the course are now certified SAP trainers, allowing them to roll out the programme to CPUT students. This international qualification will add value to a CV and give students a competitive edge in the market place.

According to TERP 10 coordinator and lecturer, Jerry Ansen, CPUT is the only university with such a large number of certified SAP trainers.

Prof André Slabbert attended the International Conference for Academic Disciplines from 1 – 5 April in Vienna, Austria. He presented a paper (co-authored with Corrie Uys) titled: ‘An exploratory overview of the political views of the destitute and unemployed in South Africa’.

This particular conference was somewhat ‘different’ in that it allowed ample opportunities for networking, social liaison and interacting with a number of academics from 67 different countries. Some valuable contacts were established,

and formal liaison was established with three universities. A direct result is that a joint conference will be held in September 2013, co-hosted by CPUT and the Institute of Management Technology in Nagpur, India.

With latest tourism figures showing that the country had its best tourism season on record in 2011, it would seem that hosting the 2010 FIFA World CupTM has been a boost for South Africa.

A major study, led by the Centre for Tourism Research in Africa (CETRA), analysing the

socio-economic impact of the event has drawn to a close. The research undertaken by Prof Kamilla Swart and her MTech and DTech students, was celebrated at a function at the Granger Bay campus recently, where it was confirmed that the World Cup has undoubtedly focused world tourism on both Cape Town and South Africa.

Swart is Associate Professor in the Faculty

of Business, and heads CETRA. She was the project manager for the massive study, which comprised over 7 000 surveys conducted during the period of the World Cup, in partnership with the City of Cape Town and the Cape Higher Education Consortium.

She praised the hard work of the collaborators, including City of Cape Town’s Carol Wright, and spoke of the sleepless nights, anxiety (and fun) that the huge project entailed.

She also noted the need for a critical understanding of event impacts on the city. Results indicate that Cape Town and the country were positively profiled, as underscored by the latest tourism visitor figures. With tourism in many other countries declining owing to the troubled Euro-zone, Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk announced in Parliament in April that South Africa had recorded 3.3 percent more tourists than in 2010, when growth of 15.1 percent was achieved.

TABLE OF PEACE ANd UNITY

First-year students with the DVCs before service begins

On 13 May 2012 GourmetSA hosted the annual Table of Peace and Unity Lunch at the foot of Table Mountain, an annual event held in aid of Red Cross and numerous other charities.

Attended by 750 guests, many local celebrities and government officials, the lunch is prepared and presented each year by three chefs from varying establishments, each one in charge of putting together one of the courses. This year Chef Jerome Peters from the Cape Town Hotel School prepared the dessert dish, a decadent chocolate cheese cake enjoyed by all.

In addition, Luke van Rensburg, the restaurant team, and all first-year students were responsible for the set-up of the table and bar facilities, as well as the service on the day. A trying task, owing to the logistics, as well as the fact that this was many of the students’ first attempts at this type of service.

The event itself went off very well and praise was received not only from the organisers for the pristine level of set-up and service, but also from the many guests that attended.

Every year GourmetSA hosts the Good Food and Wine show where many celebrity BBC chefs give cooking demonstrations to a large audience who also attend to view the many exhibition stands.

The Cape Town Hotel School was asked this year to work together with SPAR as well as SPEKKO rice which both had demonstration stands.

The CTHS staff and students were responsible for the ordering in, and preparation of all recipes prepared by the chefs.

This year the staff and students led by Nina Septoe and Luke van Rensburg got to work with Reza Mohammed, Valentine Warner, Whitney Miller and Jenny Morris (to name a few). All chefs were extremely impressed with the professionalism of our students and all have written personal reference letters for the individual students as they prepare to graduate and enter the hospitality industry.

The Cape Town Hotel School was also given a stand to promote the academic courses and restaurant facilities.

The trip included a visit to the Marine Science and Technology Center (MaST), and a Highline Community College tour, where delegates met with international students studying at Highline. On the second day, after a meeting with senior members of the College, the delegates attended lectures and specialised presentations on various business initiatives, including funding for African initiatives, particularly the upgrade of human and technical skills.

The delegation also visited the University of Washington in Seattle, where Dr Edward Taylor, Vice-Provost and Dean of

Undergraduate Academic Affairs, addressed the experiences of first-year students; other focus areas were the role of the Center for Teaching and Learning, and the contribution of the Distinguished Teaching Award recipients – these were of special interest in terms of the similarities between the University of Washington and CPUT.

In addition to being introduced to various other diverse specialised programmes

and sessions at Highline, staff also visited Microsoft in Seattle, which has 90 000 employees on a campus comprising more than 100 buildings.

The visit was concluded on the night of 23 March 2012 with a visit to the Century Link Field stadium in Seattle, where 28 000 football fans watched the Sounders of Seattle beat the Houston Dynamos team.

A delegation from the Faculty of Business was invited to visit Highline Community College in Des Moines, Washington, from 14 – 23 March 2012. The purpose of the visit was to network with and learn from various tertiary institutions in the Seattle area, to strengthen collaboration between CPUT and Highline, and to focus on specific programmes that could be introduced in the Faculty of Business.
