OBTAINING FIRE SUPPRESSION PERMITS
o Complete commercial permit application (copy available on building
department website: http://www.cityhall.lima.oh.us/index.aspx?NID=196
o Submit 4 sets of plans for review
o 1 set will be forwarded to the fire department having jurisdiction for comment
o Upon approval 2 sets will be returned to contractor with permit
o Building department will email copy of permit to fire department having
jurisdiction upon issuance. (see Contact List – Appendix A)
o Ready for system installation when permit has been issued
SYSTEM INSTALLATION
o System is to be installed in accordance with all approved construction
documents
o System must be installed as code compliant in accordance with all NFPA
standards and building codes.
SCHEDULING INSPECTIONS
o Contractor completes and sends (via fax or email) a fire protection request form (see appendix B) to fire department having jurisdiction.
o Contractor to call fire inspector to schedule inspection date and time.
o Fire inspector to notify building department of scheduled inspection date and time.
o Tests and inspections to be witnessed jointly by fire inspector and
building inspector.
o All new and modified systems affecting more than 20 heads shall be tested at 200 psi without loss of pressure for 2 hours.
EXCEPTION: modifications that cannot be isolated shall
not require testing in excess of system working pressure.
INSPECTION OF LIMITED AREA OR MODIFIED SYSTEMS HAVING 20 HEADS OR LESS
o Fire inspector and building inspector reviews construction documents for approvals and completeness.
o Inspectors verify that all piping and devices are according to approved documents (OBC 109.1).
o Inspectors will give final approval upon compliance of all system
components.
INSPECTION OF NEW OR MODIFIED SYSTEMS HAVING MORE THAN 20 HEADS
o Fire inspector and building inspector reviews construction documents for approvals and completeness.
o Inspectors verify pressure gauge for 200psi and begin 2-hour hydrostatic test.
o Inspectors verify that all piping and devices are according to approved
documents (OBC 109.1).
o If no loss of pressure and no violations were observed, the inspectors will sign the building permit.
o If violations including loss of pressure were observed, the inspectors
will leave an inspection form identifying the violations.
o If system is to be covered by ceilings or other building finishes, an additional inspection may be necessary to verify pipe installation is in compliance with approved plans before concealment.
o If sprinkler piping is to be painted, it must be inspected by the building
inspector prior to covering to ensure the correct type of pipe was installed.
o The fire alarm acceptance test and approval of all newly installed
tamper switches, flow or alarm devices must be completed prior to scheduling a final suppression inspection.
o Contractor must provide a completed material and test certificate. (see
Appendix C – Contractor’s Material and Test Certificate for Above ground Piping)
o Inspectors review construction documents for approvals and
completeness.
o Inspectors will verify the installation of the Hydraulic calculation sign, stock of spare sprinkler heads and general information sign. NOTE: spare special sized heads are not required.
o Inspectors will check for signage on all valves.
o Inspectors will verify head type and placement.
o Inspectors will check to ensure a ceiling is provided for pendant heads
when applicable and escutcheon plates are installed.
o Inspectors will check for obstructions to the sprinkler heads.
