I don’t know if you have observed this, but your automaticemails for my type of work (software or systems) have beengetting rather thin in recent weeks and the rates have droppedquite a bit. I fear the sequester is really kicking in and that theeconomy is headed south. I’ve been telling my friends that thisreminds me a lot of February-March 1991, when everyone wasrelieved that the first Gulf war had gone so well and only a fewof us were seeing the economy unravel. Employment Trends Index Edges Up The Conference Board employment trends index increased slightly to a reading of 111.76 in May from its downwardly revised

reading of 111.11 in April. The May reading is up 3.0 percent from the same month a year ago.“While the increase in the Employment Trends Index (ETI) in May erased the small declines of the previous two months, over-

all, the growth in the ETI has remained weak,” said Gad Levanon, director of macroeconomic research at The Conference Board.“Taken together with other recent indicators of economic activity, the ETI is suggesting that a significant improvement in employ-ment growth is unlikely this summer.”
