Researchers at the Ohio AgriculturalResearch and Development Center arelooking or an answer. Or rather severalo them.

In one eort, OARDC agriculturalengineers have ound that, i harnessedproperly, some bacteria can be used togenerate electricity rom manure. Weare simply tapping into the normalmetabolism o the microbes cells andturning that chemical energy into elec-trical energy. It has the potential tobe a cheaper, more environmentallyriendly way o serving peoples alter-

native energy needs, said Ann Christy, who heads an OARDC microbial uelcell project.

Christy and colleagues have been able

to produce enough electricity to powera lamp or Christmas tree lights. Te low

voltage has applications in remote areaswhere electricity is not easily accessible,as well as in the medical eld.

In another project, OARDC researchersClay Sneller and Fred Snyder are evaluat-ing technologies to convert milleed intobioenergy. A byproduct o the millingindustry (6.8 million tons a year nation-

Renewable energy crops aren't the only agricul-tural products that can supply clean energy. OARDCresearchers are exploring various technologies to tuanimal, crop, and ood-processing waste into cleanenergy. These eorts have added benefts: They helpreduce the economic and environmental costs odisposing o waste and alleviate concerns that biouand bioenergy generation rom crops could aectood prices.

A geneticist in OARDCs Department o Horticulture and Crop Science, van der Knaap and colleagues cloned a gene, dubbed SUN, which plays asignicant role in the elongated shape o dierent tomato varieties. Inaddition to explaining how tomatoes evolved rom a round, berry-sized

ruit into the wide array o shapes and sizes known today, SUNcould alsohelp unravel the mystery behind the huge morphological dierences amongedible ruits and vegetables such as peppers, squash, and others.

In terms o practical applications, being able to control andmodiy ruit shape could lead to the development o new varieties, helping growers to serve specialty markets

and processors to reduce costs (the tomato industryalone is worth over $100 million a year in Ohio).

Tis discovery will tell us, too, how we caninuence the process o ruit ormation and

acilitate the development o designer ruit, van der Knaap explained. Te design

or control o ruit shape is especiallyuseul when introducing new varieties. Depending on the goal othe breeding project, the creationo niche markets may require anunusual shape o the product so that

consumers are curious to check itout.Mauricio Espinoza

Genetic variation or traits such as ruit morphologyhas been studied since the days o Mendel,

but OARDC geneticist Esther van der Knaap andher colleagues have been able to determine

the molecular mechanism or such a trait akey piece o inormation that can lead to greaterunderstanding o the process o diversifcationin ruits and across plant species, and o plant

    development in general.

Susie Whittington is already working harderto try to live up to being a recipient o the

USDA Excellence in Teaching Award. In sodoing, she continues to ollow the axiom

that she hopes her students will use as theytake their place at the ront o the classroom:

    Teach rom your heart.

CollegeEnrollment Upstdet ttted tcFaEs gm dvety

aC , Aca, an ennna scnc acy ba bn cnz nanay acn.Susie Whittington, associate proessor in the Department o Human and Community

Resource Development, was honored in early November with the USDA Excellence in

eaching Award. Te award was announced at the annual meeting o the National

Association o State Universities and Land Grant Colleges.

Tis is the highest teaching award among colleges o agriculture and related sciences

nationwide, said Linda Martin, associate dean and director o undergraduate programs.

Carl Zulau won the same honor or teaching in agricultural economics in 1995. Other

aculty members rom Ohio State have been honored on the regional level: Ann Christy,

Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering, in 2005; Keith M. Irvin, Animal Sciences,

in 2003; and Bernard L. Erven, Agricultural Economics, in 1999.

Whittington, who earned her bachelors degree (1982), masters degree (1988), and

doctorate (1991) in agricultural education at Ohio State, is recognized as a national

leader in research on student cognitive engagement. And she puts her expertise to

practice in the classroom: Her teaching methods promote a careul combination

o participation, quiet time, problem-solving, group interaction, and cooperative learn-

ing in a proessional atmosphere, in which she consistently shows enthusiasm or the

subject matter as well as the well-being o the students.

Te combination has resulted in high ratings on student evaluations and, more

importantly, the development o uture teachers who understand rom rst-hand

experience the dierence that good teaching methods can make.

One such student, Mindy Lohrey, said as much in her letter supporting Whitting-

tons nomination or the award. Calling Whittingtons classes challenging, engaging

and relevant, Lohrey, now a graduate student in the College o Education and Human

Ecology, added: Te rst lesson Dr. Whittington impressed upon me is that how you

make students eel is invaluable and can empower a person or a lietime. Her energy

and enthusiasm or teaching and learning is unparalleled, and the impact she has had

on my lie and the lives o countless others is unsurpassed.

Whittington is humbled by the recognition, crediting mentors Robert Warmbrod,

Kirby Barrick, Jim Knight, and, in particular, L. H. Newcomb. Few people have

the privilege o learning at the eet o a master, Whittington said. He is the best.

A double-major in ood science andnutrition and agricultural economics, VanCamp was a runner-up or the rumanScholarship and is currently a nalist orboth the Marshall and Rhodes scholar-ships. In getting to this point, Van Camphas overcome challenges and made sure tohelp others along the way.

Shes strong academically, she does re-search as an undergraduate thats o pub-lishable quality, she knows how to applyher work in dierent settings, and shesinvolved in university leadership and stu-dent programs, said Hooker, associateproessor in Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics. Any twoo those qualities would make a antasticstudent. She displays all o them.

A 2005 graduate o the Canal-Win-chester School District, Van Camp becamethe rst Faireld County recipient o theLand Grant Opportunity Scholarship.

Te rst in her amily to attend college, she believes that a ve-week study abroadtrip to Beijing during the summer betweenher rst and second year was what madethe dierence or her.

Te China trip opened up a worldo possibilities or me, Van Camp said. When I came back, I elt I could doanything. She began applying orresearch grants and other opportunitiesthat came her way, and, according to heradvisors, has made the most o her collegeexperience.

As admission to the Columbus campus

becomes more competitive, more stu-dents are being unneled to the regionalcampuses and AI, which are open-admission. Some intend to transer to theColumbus campus afer one year, whichthey can do i they earn a GPA o 2.0or better. But or many students, AI istheir rst choice.

It was set in stone that I was going togo to Ohio State, said rst-year studentCaitlyn Russell o Wellsville. But I choseto start at AIbecause I like

the smalleratmosphere. Iknew it wouldbe an easiertransition orme. And I love it here. Russell is major-ing in pre-agricultural education. Whenshe graduates with her Associate o Sci-ence degree, she will have completed halthe requirements or a bachelors degree inagricultural education.

    Stephen Nameth, AI director, sees

the trend as dovetailing perectly withOhio Board o Regents Chancellor EricFingerhuts 10-year strategic plan orhigher education in Ohio. Te plansets very specic goals or increasing thenumber o students who complete two-and our-year degrees, and our enrollmentpatterns will contribute to the achieve-ment o those goals. At 723, AIs autumnquarter enrollment is about 5 percent

larger than autumn quarter o last year.
