In Africa, Dr Lawson Cairns again worked incredibly hard to ensure a full programme of events, and funding from BSAVA, NACAM and MSD ensured that we continued to provide world-class educational support for both member & non-member associations in 8 countries.
Dr Cairns worked with Prof Moritz van Vuuren to deliver CE on One Health and AMR in 5 different countries. We published a brief interview with Prof van Vuuren after these African events, which you can find here on our website.
Due to Dr Cairns’ support and the quality of the CE events, we hope to welcome Madagascar, Malawi and Mozambique as WSAVA Members in 2020.
Dr Olatunji Nasir and Dr Derick Chibeu have been supporting Dr Cairns and will be overseeing and initiating CE events in Africa from 2020 onwards

In Asia, Dr Chaiyot Tanrattana and Dr Mackarand Chavan were selected to join the committee in June 2019. The following months, they built relationships with local organizers and started planning strategically for the CE events over the next few years.
Only 2 events were organized in the Asian region in 2019; Sri Lanka and India.
We hope to have CE events in many countries in Asia in theupcoming years including; Vietnam, Nepal, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Sri Lanka, China and Mongolia.
Setting up quality CE events that will benefit the veterinarians in that country the most can take several years and we are working hard to set up a sustainable program.

The regional Latin American meetings have proven valuable and support the initiatives for CE programs in several countries in the region. We are working hard to establish a curriculum in the region and deliver CE in more countries, including non-member countries.

He has been focusing on delivering face-to-face CE that is also recorded, to help develop the WSAVA Online Academy in the form of online CE.
We hope to deliver CE in more countries next year and we hope to welcome Kosovo as a new member in 2020.

Topic One Health
Speaker Prof Moritz van Vuuren (South Africa)
Prof van Vuuren spoke on the role of a Vet in One Health, antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic stewardship.
Local organizer, Dr Ditiro Coyne said: “The CE meeting was highly relevant and greatly appreciated by all who attended. A lot of the attendees really learned from the presentations given by Prof, Van Vuuren and were able to notice mistakes they had been making in practice based on the latest research in the field of antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic stewardship.
Professor Moritz Van Vuuren was an excellent presenter and made the topics very relevant to all Vets, both in private practice and in state services. The attendees made it abundantly clear that this was an extremely important topic and it fit well into the mission of the Botswana Department of Veterinary Services to address the issue of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).”

Topic Surgery
Speaker Prof Sandra Corr (UK)
Prof Sandra Corr covered several topics as well as skills labs in surgical principles and techniques.
She said: “I was hugely impressed by the level of interest and engagement of the students with the lectures and material. The stayed enthusiastic throughout the two days, asking many smart questions at the end of each lecture, or following things up with me over lunch or at the end of the day. Their enthusiasm to learn, and their own knowledge, was really impressive, and it’s great that WSAVA supported them in this.
However the need for continuing education is clear. One of the qualified vets brought two problem cases for me to examine with the students on one afternoon, both of which had sadly been badly mismanaged over a prolonged period. One of the cases, a lovely Dalmatian which has not been able to open its jaws more than 1-2cms for the last 2 years and has been syringe-fed liquid food all this time, and was very, very thin, really should be euthanized on humane grounds. I broached that with the vets as respectfully and tactfully as I could, but while the vet and owner clearly cared for the dog, I’m not sure they really understood how very poor the animal’s welfare was. This refined my ideas a little - it’s not so much about different levels of experience or facilities, but rather a real need to understand when things are irretrievable, and treatment should stop, which I sensed was lacking.”

Speaker Prof Moritz van Vuuren (South Africa)
Prof van Vuuren delivered CE on One Health, antibiotic stewardship and AMR.
Local organizer, Dr Pat Boland, said: “The event was a success well beyond our expectations. Prof Moritz van Vuuren is not only an expert in his field but a very engaging speaker. He held the attention of the participants for the entire time. The subject area spans a wide spectrum of disciplines which attracted a correspondingly wide spectrum of participants.”

Lilongwe, Malawi
Prof van Vuuren gave the following, valuable feedback:
“The attending group of 40 people was big by Malawian standards. It was particularly positive and encouraging that the whole final year veterinary class (about12 students) attended. They represent the first group of students from the new school that will qualify later in the year as veterinarians. It was a great opportunity for me to introduce them to the One Health concept and antimicrobial resistance, and during the day’s lectures I made a point of involving them in the discussion. In those countries with veterinary schools that may still be visited this year, it may be a good idea to also encourage their committees to involve final year veterinary students for the day.
I can report that both in Zambia and Malawi, a number of vets spoke to me during breaks and emphasized that they think that these CE meetings are very valuable and they have great appreciation for the contribution of the WSAVA. I started my lectures in both cities with a few slides that focus on the WSAVA and its CE programme, and will continue doing so if the African meetings continue for the rest of the year”

The practical component was held at the end of the theoretical lectures and involved 6 opthalmic clinical cases from veterinarians attending the course.
Dr Goodhead was an ideal lecturer and the lectures he presented were practical, easy to follow and easy to apply in every day practice. All the attendees were very interactive during lectures, asking questions and giving relevant comments. Attendees also appreciated learning from the clinical cases. Overall the feedback received from the event was positive and all the attendees were looking forward to the next event.”

Topic Emergency and Critical Care
Speaker Dr Kris van Gommeren
Dr van Gommeren worked closely with local organizer, Dr Kladji, to understand the resources available and needs of veterinarians in Albania. He tailored his lecture to best benefit the local veterinarians and experienced that the participants were very engaged and interactive.
Dr van Gommeren said “I must say I appreciated the fact that these veterinarians still base a lot of their diagnosis on history and clinical examination, at least they still value their hands, eyes and ears... So it was fun to be able to point out that indeed, in clear cases very advanced technology is not always required to help patients. Many veterinarians expressed they felt empowered at the end of the day, understanding that we too, still teach our students to start from the basic approach of signalment, history and clinical examination... And that each complementary examination is only valid if it were to change anything in the diagnosis or treatment of the patient. In the end, I think this day seems to have been very helpful for the participating veterinarians.”

Conclusion
WSAVA CE in 2020
In 2020 our face-to-face CE program has had to be aborted or postponed until further notice due to COVID19, but we are working diligently to get online CE to the homes of each of our veterinarians around the world. The WSAVA Academy videos are being used here as a first available resource, and work on our interactive Nutritional Guidelines Digital course is underway. As we are all getting back on our feet and adapting to the new situation, we will be trying to create new online courses and have webinars with experts so questions on these topics can be dealt with around the world.
In 2020, we aim to:
• Finish the CE curriculum
• Polish the plan to move from 100% face-to-face, to 50% face-to-face and 50% online CE
• Make sure that face-to-face events that do happen include (where possible) a train the trainer component.
