3 TAMPA BAY TIDBITS
Let me clarify one point regarding our businesses that lose money. If you consider the golf courses as a stand-alone business, it will appear that it does in fact operate in the red. The same is true for our food service business. We show our administrative costs as another “business” in our financial reports. That line shows as an exceptionally large positive number. When examining the bottom line, the financials look good. In an effort to have our financial reports be more representative, we changed the format this year to include the portion of the assessment attributable to each business silo in the applicable line on the reports. While we all share in the cost of the golf courses, there is an additional fee charged to those that do play golf. The fee is modest and affordable but does not cover the entire cost of the operation. We also have chosen to keep the restaurant and pub pricing very reasonable. Again, the revenue from our food services does not cover our food service costs. We could actually close the restaurant and seemingly save money for our resident members. But I do not think that would be an extremely popular decision. We could also close the golf course. Oops! There go the property values. So, it must be understood that we operate a Community. Our businesses are here for our residents to enjoy. The amenities enhance our lifestyle and are therefore especially important to each of us. Our lifestyle would be negatively impacted if our amenities were not maintained as they are. The value of our community should be paramount in each of our minds. If our property values decrease and we have difficulty regarding resales, we could be forced to raise the assessment to overcome reduced revenues. Since the value of our properties are important, and the condition of our amenities affects said values, we all contribute to the cost to maintain our most important assets. The Community Association was not structured to place the burden on maintaining the golf course on only those that play golf. The same hold true with regards to the swimming pools, the courts, etc. If that was the case, as an example, if you do not play golf, you would not participate in paying for the golf course operation. If you decide to play pickleball, you will pay a fee to use the court. How about a fee for using the dog park? At first thought this may seem to be a workable solution, but when you peel back the onion it does not seem as feasible. If the only revenue for the golf courses came from membership fees, individual greens fees, cart fees and so forth, the cost to become a member or pay for a single round would be prohibitively expensive. It would not be unreasonable to assume that we would not have enough golf play to support this concept. Without proper funding the golf course would quickly become a liability as opposed to the asset it currently is. If we adjusted prices in the restaurant so that our food service business was a break even or profitable operation, the prices would be deemed as non-competitive and our residents would choose to always eat somewhere else. It is important to view our Community as a whole as opposed to individual parts. As a result of each of us sharing in the use and cost of our Community, we offer a terrific lifestyle for the members at a reasonable cost.
TBCA MASTER BOARD
TBGCC Amenities: Use and Cost Sharing by Bill Saffren, President Tampa Bay Community Association
Y ou may have been told by someone on the Board or Management that we are a shared amenity community.
Sounds good, but what does being a shared amenity community really mean? Does it mean we all share in the use of our amenities? Yes, that is part of the answer, but there is more. We all also share in paying for the operation, maintenance, and upkeep of our amenities. You may have also heard from the Board or Management that our golf courses and food and beverage operation each lose money every year. How can that be? How can we lose money in two of our largest cost centers and still manage to keep our financial heads above water? The answer in part is by amenity sharing. The other part is that in addition to sharing in the use of our amenities, we also all share in the cost of operating our amenities. In other words, we subsidize the cost to operate our golf courses, restaurant, pool, courts, dog parks, etc. by allocating part of your monthly assessment to pay for each amenity. Whether you play golf or not, you are helping to pay for the golf course. If you use the pools or not you are still helping to pay for them. This is the case for each amenity.

Time Is Now For Fall Seed Starting by Scott Miller President
N ow is the time to start your fall garden transplants to have them ready to put in in late August and
September. This means if you are going to start seeds which usually take 6 to 8 weeks to be ready to put outdoors, the middle of July is your time to start.
Vegetables such as peppers, tomatoes and eggplant should be seeded in early July for a late August planting. Vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, collards, kale, mustards, spinach and other leafy greens should be started from seed around the end of July for an early September transplanting. Most other vegetables that are
directly planted in the ground should be planted in late August and September.
Some flowers can still be planted in July but those were mentioned in our June Tidbits column. Watch out for fungus and insects on your plants and lawns during this time, especially if we get a great deal of rain during the month. The final fertilization of lawns and plants should take place in late July or early August.
If you are harvesting vegetables now, remember that part of your crop will be going to your friendly rabbits, deer, Sandhill cranes and other animals that live in our area. After all, we have to be good neighbors to these pesky critters.
Hydrate Yourself Properly Please take care of yourself if you are outdoors, working in the yard as all people’s heat tolerances are different. You may have heat exhaustion or heat stroke if you have slight dizziness, cloudy thinking and severe stabbing pain in the back of your head that turns into a migraine. These are the basic signs of both but can manifest differently in everyone. Remember the three basic rules of working outside in the summer in Florida, hydrate, Hydrate and even more HYDRATE.
Also, please remember your pets during this time because they also can have heat-related illness if they don’t drink enough water.
The Garden Club of TBGCC does not meet in summer; the next meeting is Tuesday, Sept. 15th at 12:15pm in the Community Center, if the buildings and facilities are available. Please keep an eye here for further updates.
For information contact Scott Miller at [email protected] or 352-668-4365.

T he GFWC TampaBay Woman’s Club continues to be active this summer, collecting baseball caps for
Blanket Tampa Bay to distribute to the homeless. Please drop off at 10420 Chatuge Drive—box on the porch. We support the Helping Hands Food Pantry at Atonement Lutheran Church. Our focus is women’s non-edible items such as sanitary products, toilet paper, bar soaps, shampoo, lotions, etc. We gladly will accept any non-perishable food items, as well. You can drop items off at 10246 Chatuge—box on the porch. The ladies have made and given away more than 350 homemade masks for health care workers, residents of a rehab facility and residents of TBGCC! We are not selling them but asking for a donation for our Canine Companions For Independence project. Members continue to sew so if anyone needs a washable mask, please contact Sharon Grace at 352-668-8088 or 813-220-2716. Wreaths Across America was such a success last year and we want to continue this project. We will have order forms ready by September so residents can purchase wreaths for Florida National Veterans Cemetery in Bushnell.
Membership is open to any ladies residing in our TBGCC community. For more information about the club or our projects, please call President Sharon Grace at 352-668-8088 or 813-220-2716.
Pictured is Judi Moeller and Bogo (puppy in training sponsored by Publix) from puppy training earlier this year at the Sarasota/Bradenton Airport. Judi is project chairman for the club. GFWC members make masks, which anyone can have free with a donation to Canine Companions For Independence. Call President Sharon Grace at 352-668-8088 or 813-220-2716.
The GFWC TampaBay Woman’s Club is collecting donations for Canine Companions For Independence “Pennies for Puppies.” We accept pennies, nickels, dimes, ones, tens or twenties! Donations help with training and placement of service dogs to disabled people.
TAMPA BAY GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB had a goal of 13 donations and we surpassed that with a total of 23!

Hurricane Preparedness Now that the hurricane season is upon us, the Board and Management are concerned about your safety and well-being. Although there are no known storms currently threatening our area, we feel it is important to be proactive in getting some basic information to you. Of course, as this season progresses and we have specific details relative to incoming storms, we will continue to keep you up to date with the latest information and any anticipated impact we will feel in Tampa Bay Community Association. Please note that in the case of an approaching hurricane, all employees and staff will be responsible for protecting the common areas of the community and will not be in a position to assist residents with their personal property. Each resident is responsible for securing their personal belongings and for their personal safety NOTE: NO CURRENT WARNINGS IN EFFECT—this is for informational purposes Inland Pasco County, Florida
Click here for Pasco County Hurricane Preparedness Guide
Click here for Red Cross Hurricane Prep Guide If the National Hurricane Center issues a Hurricane Warning advisory, the following procedures should be taken to ensure your safety and the safety of others.
1. Remain calm and keep listening to the local news for weather conditions, evacuation routes and nearest shelter. 2. Plan how to communicate with family members if you lose power: For example, you can use phone, text, social media 3. Charge your phone: You’ll have a full battery if you lose power. 4. Consider purchasing a cell phone battery power bank for additional cell phone power. 5. Bookmark your local government’s website: This gives you quick access to storm updates and emergency instructions. 6. All plants, furniture, and other items from your patio must be removed and moved indoors. 7. Build or restock your emergency preparedness kit: Include a flashlight, batteries, cash, and first aid supplies. 8. Purchase in advance bottled water, ice, and non-perishable items such as canned food, packaged food, paper, personal
products, and manual can opener. 9. Do not leave pets unattended at the property. There are shelters and kennels that will board your pet in case of
evacuation. 10. Obtain necessary prescriptions and medications. 11. Keep flashlights and battery-operated radio/TV handy with extra batteries. 12. Clean and fill the bathtub with water. 13. Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) will not be working in case of power outage. You’ll want to make arrangements for
cash needs. 14. In the event of power failure, turn off all appliances and keep refrigerator door closed. (Food will stay cool for 24 hours) 15. Fill your vehicle’s gas tank before the storm arrives. 16. Avoid downed power lines and report them to your local electric company as soon as possible. 17. Take refuge in a small interior room during the storm. 18. Keep all windows and doors closed through the storm. Do not crack a window or door during the storm. Draw your
verticals and drapery materials over the windows to protect from the possibility of shattering glass. 19. Create an evacuation plan with your family; you may have to leave quickly. 20. Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down, and fast-moving water
can sweep your vehicle away. IN THE EVENT THAT OUR COMMUNITY SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN AN EVACUATION AREA, RESIDENTS SHOULD STAY TUNED TO LOCAL NEWS CHANNELS AND COMPLY WITH ALL MANDATORY EVACUATION ORDERS. ANYONE REMAINING ON PROPERTY DURING A MANDATORY EVACUATION DOES SO AT THEIR OWN RISK. Lastly, we want to extend our appreciation to you for your cooperation. Your safety is our primary concern. Please be safe and make plans that can be implemented quickly in the case of a change in the Hurricane’s path.
IMPORTANT HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS INFORMATION PLEASE READ CAREFULLY In the event a hurricane warning is posted for this area, it is imperative that you listen to all hurricane-related updates via radio, television, newspaper, or internet related services. Please follow all instructions issued from the authorities as they are professionals and equipped to handle such emergencies. For your convenience, the link to Pasco County’s Emergency Management is below:
ATTENTION! In the event of a TRUE Emergency, please contact 911 immediately. A member of the property staff can also be reached at 352.588.9265 Should you require immediate assistance regarding evacuations and safety concerns, please contact one of the County Emergency Centers or FEMA whose numbers are listed below:

T he Garden Flag Sales project has been a huge success and we offer our gratitude for the purchases and the
generous additional donations! During the sale, we have realized that there are many “snowbirds” that were not able to place their orders on time. Therefore, we are extending the flag sales to accommodate those that were not able to get their order placed. The flags cost $14.99 (including tax.) Your orders along with the form below can be dropped off at the Clubhouse Lobby. All proceeds from the sales will be used to fund appreciation gifts for our Tampa Bay Golf and Country Club Employees that despite the Pandemic, continued to service our community. If you were not able to order your flag or have decided you want to order another flag now is your time! The delivery date on these flags is to be determined. It is important to remember that any flag ordered by May 31st is scheduled to be deliv-ered in the near future. Both the Presidents Council and the Community Association Board thanks you for your continued support of this worthwhile project. “10 Neighborhoods … One Community”
