Dear Potential Partner,
As the directors of the Summit High School Band program, we would like to
take this opportunity to share some information about our program and how you can
support our wonderful students.
Summit High School is starting its 7th year and has grown from 28 students, in
year 1, to over 150 currently in the program. The band program is made up of the
marching band, 2 concert bands, jazz band, pep band, winter guard and several
chamber groups. Both of our concert bands have performed at regional concert festi-
vals and performed at the state festival twice. The marching band has performed at 2
different Bands of America regional competitions and has been selected to march in
the 2018 Hollywood Christmas Parade in Hollywood California.
When it comes to funding, our district provides no funding towards our pro-
grams. Our funding comes strictly through our parental support group and students
going out and fundraising. Buses, trucks, music, equipment and uniforms are all a
direct result of fundraising. Without the efforts of our students and parents, we
would not be able to do the things we do. As we grow, the need for more funds in-
creases. In other words, we are growing faster than we can raise money to buy equip-
ment that we desperately need. This is where you come in. By partnering up with the
Summit High Band program and sponsoring the band, you can help provide wonder-
ful experiences that our students will cherish for their lifetimes.
Music education is such an important activity to the development of our young
students. The confidence, self-discipline, commitment, and life skills that it teaches
are invaluable. Please consider sponsoring our band and making a difference in a
young persons’ life.
Musically yours,
Erick Harris Scott Atchley

Meet Our Directors
Erick Harris, Director of Bands
Scott Atchley, Assistant Director of Bands
Erick Harris grew up in the great state of Kentucky, where he grad-
uated from Madisonville North Hopkins High School in 1994. Mr.
Harris graduated from Austin Peay State University in 2000 and is
in his 17th year of teaching. He began his teaching career at Fred J
Page High school in Franklin, TN and spent 11 years at that post.
When Summit High School in Spring Hill opened in 2011, he
jumped at the chance to build a program from the ground up. Mr.
Harris is currently in his 7th year at Summit and has gone from 28
band students in year one, to over 150 band students this year.
Mr. Harris is a sought after marching band arranger, clinician, and
judge. He marched 4 years with the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle
Scott Atchley is excited to join the Summit High School band as
assistant director for the 2017-2018 season. He has served as
Instrumental Music Director for Harpeth High School for the last
four years. Mr. Atchley received a B.S. in music and a M.A.T. in
education from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville,
Tennessee.
Scott is an active performer and educator throughout Tennessee
and Kentucky. As a professional trumpet player, he has performed
with numerous orchestras, ensembles and as a soloist. As an edu-
cator, he has maintained a large private studio, coached regional
chamber ensembles and worked with over forty middle and high
school bands in the middle Tennessee area.

The Band Program
In order to expand the opportunities for students to participate in the Summit High School Band program
and maximize the occasions for these students to develop and display their musical talent, the band pro-
gram encompasses multiple ensembles that provide excellent opportunities for their growth and develop-
ment, including:
Spartans Marching Band
The Summit High School Marching Spartans is an audition only ensemble participating in performances at all football
games (home and away), local and national competitions and parades. The Spartans Marching Band is comprised of
135 students (grades 8-12), the band director, assistant director and a crew of specialized instructors. Participation in
the marching band teaches students discipline, work ethic, athletics, camaraderie, respect and helps to build tomor-
row’s leaders.
Color Guard/Winter Guard
The purpose of the Color Guard is to interpret the music that the marching band is playing via the synchronized work
of flags, sabres, rifles, the air blade, and through dance. Membership in the SHS color guard is by audition only. Stu-
dents in Color Guard that also play instruments should be enrolled in the appropriate band class period. Membership
in the fall marching program as either a member of the Color Guard, Horn Line, or Percussion Section is a requirement
for participation in Winter Guard.
Concert Band
Open to all students in grades 9-12 with prior band experience, this class will concentrate on developing basic playing
skills such as tone production, rhythmic proficiency, intonation, and technical ability, as well as preparation and per-
formance of fine concert band literature. This ensemble will perform on several concert programs and in concert festi-
vals.
Wind Ensemble
Summit High School wind ensemble is open to students in grades 10-12, by audition only. This ensemble comprises
the most outstanding instrumental musicians at Summit High School, and will have as a primary focus the preparation
and performance of the finest literature for the modern wind band. While students will already possess a high degree of
ability, the further advancement of musical skills, both individual and ensemble will be paramount to the success of
the student and the organization. Great emphasis is placed on individual musical responsibility, in that students are
one or two-on-a-part. Students in this class are expected to perform with the SHS Marching Band, on several concert
programs and in concert festivals.
Jazz Band
Open to student in grade 9-12 who play trumpet, trombone, saxophone, or rhythm section instruments. This ensemble
concentrates on music from all jazz idioms. Membership in this ensemble is by director approval.
Percussion Class
Open to students in grades 9-12, with Director approval. All percussion students are assigned to this class. In addition
to working on percussion techniques, percussion students will experience percussion ensemble literature and be as-
signed to the appropriate concert ensemble. This group will concentrate on performance in all areas of percussion.
Why Support SHS Bands…...The Expenses
Your support means a lot to us and your gift will go a long way in helping us sustain and grow our
band programs. The Summit High School Marching Band program does not receive any financial
support from Williamson County Schools and all operational costs must be raised by the participating
students through the support of the SHS Band Boosters Club and community organizations such as
yours.
Summit High School is only 7 years old, yet it boasts a current roster of 150 marching band
students, making it the 2nd largest high school marching band in Williamson County. It takes a
lot of financial assistance to operate a program this large.
Did You Know?????
To meet the annual budget ($108,000.00) to operate a band of this size, each student is asked to
commit a pledge to raise $800.00, a financial hardship for many band families.
With these funds, the SHSBBC must supplement the cost of:
paying all additional section instructors for rehearsals and performances
purchasing music for marching band, band concerts, parades & special performances
purchasing and/or renting music instruments & equipment: maintenance and repairs of said
instruments and equipment
new and additional band uniforms, alterations, maintenance and cleaning
transporting staff, marching band students, all instruments and equipment for performances and
competitions—which currently requires renting 2 U-haul Trucks and paying for 3 school
buses and drivers each trip
provide meals and snacks for band members during band camp, performances and competitions
purchasing supplies to build and construct sets and props for the marching band’s performances and
competitions
miscellaneous items required to support the band program
What’s in it for YOU?
Our fundraising relies upon and greatly appreciates businesses and individuals who show their support for the
Summit High School band program through financial sponsorship. As parents, family members and supporters of
SHS Bands, we know the importance of community partnerships. We understand how important it is to support
the businesses and individuals who help make band musical experiences possible for our children.
In addition to the pride we’re sure you’ll experience as community leaders who look out for our young people, your
partnership with SHS Bands will provide meaningful benefits to you. In addition to the specific benefits related to
the sponsorship level you select as outlined on the following page, we will also ensure that you receive the following
as needed or as appropriate:
Put the community on notice that you are a supporter of the Spartan Marching Band and SHS Band programs
Create an awareness of your business/organization and drive traffic to your establishment and your website
Encourage the SHS families and friends to generate interest in your Social Media platforms to generate followers
and “likes”
Fundraising Goals and Objectives for next 2 years:
1) Help fund the $108,000.00 Budget per year / Student Scholarships
Marching band can be an expensive undertaking for families. Most of our participating Band
Families cannot simply write an $800.00 check for their student to participate in band each year.
Scholarships help students that may have a difficult time with the fees. Donations can be made in the
name of a particular student or the Booster Board can help direct your donation where it is needed the
most.
2) Our own Trailer!
It is our goal this year to either receive the sponsorship funds to purchase or to be the recipient
of a generous donation of a 53 foot Kentucky Low Boy Tractor Trailer (similar to these shown below) so
that we will no longer have the expense of renting trucks every time we transport the band. We are 1 of
the 2 high school bands that do not have a trailer of our own, within the Williamson County School
System, the remaining High Schools in Williamson County all have their own trailers. We would love to
find a corporation that may be looking to update its shipping truck fleet who would be willing to donate
a trailer that they plan to retire. If you can assist us with making this dream a reality, please contact
Laurie Kamunen as soon as possible at [email protected].
3) Participate in the 2018 Hollywood Christmas Parade
*Sponsorship funds to assist with the $216,000.00 trip expenses
While the band has had the privilege to participate in local holiday parades, it is the goal of our
band directors to give the students a more expansive performance opportunity as well as a fun
experience of traveling and performing together on a national platform. Our band has been invited to
participate in the 2018 Christmas Parade in Hollywood, California. In addition to each student being
asked to meet and fulfill their $800.00 annual participation pledge, each student would also need to
raise an additional $1,600.00 to attend this once in a lifetime experience. Again, this is unrealistic for
some of our families. Therefore, we are seeking corporate sponsorships or donations to raise these
funds.
Why Support SHS Bands…...The Impact
The Impact on Overall Student Success
Extracurricular activities in high school offer opportunities for students to learn the values of team-
work, individual and group responsibility, competition, diversity, acceptance and a sense of culture,
community and family. These activities provide a channel for reinforcing the lessons learning in the
classroom by providing the students the opportunity to apply academic skills in a real-world context
and are thus considered to be a part of a well-rounded education.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, research suggests that student participation
in extracurricular activities may increase students’ sense of engagement or attachment to their school
and thereby decrease the likelihood of school failure and dropping out. There are also indications that
student participation seems to promote consistent attendance, academic achievement and aspirations
for continuing beyond high school.
What makes participating in band an excellent choice as an extracurricular activity?
“Music education is a primary means by which an educational institution can transmit to students the
cultural heritage of society. Music transcends the barriers of ethnic background, economic status, lan-
guage and even literacy in its power to reach the depths of the human soul. Experiences with music de-
velop a student’s ability to make value judgements, to function logically as well as intuitively and to uti-
lize one’s innate creativity. Participation in performance organizations encourages initiative and leader-
ship in the students, stimulates goal-oriented thought processes, creates an appreciation and respect for
the efforts of others and assists students to develop a sense of responsibility to themselves, the organiza-
tion and in a broad sense….society. We recognize that few high school musicians make music a career.
However, the mental discipline and thought processes required in the study of music are applicable in all
fields of endeavor.” -Erick Harris, SHS Band Director
General Objectives
To make participation in instrumental music available to all students at Summit High School.
To develop musical experiences that enhance students’ overall educational experiences.
To provide a suitable background in music instruction for those students who elect to continue the
study of music after graduation.
To develop a life-long appreciation for music and continuation of musical activities.
To develop performing organizations that are a source of pride for the individual, the school and the
community.
We need support from our surrounding community to continue to provide a quality music program to
the students at Summit High School. It is obvious that playing music and being a part of successful
group is important in developing character and life skills in young people and your contributions can
play a significant role in providing this opportunity here locally.
