At a recent dinner meeting, the District Governor (DG) Gary Roberts, and his wife, Marilyn, attended to outline the District program for the coming year to Club members and their guests.

In addition, the DG, on the recommendation of the Club, presented the highest award the Club can bestow to two of our hardest working and committed friends of Rotary, Elizabeth Brotchie and Robin Toedter.

Elizabeth and Robin are always amongst the first to volunteer to assist in any projects of Oberon Rotary. In particular, they are a force to be reckoned with as they sell tickets on the coldest winter days. However, they are also entertaining and add great value to meeting discussions.

Both ladies are heavily involved in other community services and organisations, for which the Club also thanks them. The

library, Cobweb, Meals on Wheels and the health committees are but a few community contributions they share between them.

Congratulations Robin and Elizabeth for your great contribution to the Oberon community through Oberon Rotary and your other activities. Great job and the award is very well deserved.

The Oberon and District Garden Club is a thriving organisation that offers members the chance to hone their garden skills while enjoying a variety of social activities. Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month, the location depending on the particular event organised for that month. Our last meeting was a Christmas in July luncheon - the ideal way to get together in the depths of Winter when gardens are dormant and outside activities decidedly unattractive. For our next meeting on the 17th August, we are off to “Wildwood”, a magnificent cool climate garden at Bilpin. This garden is more than 30 years old and includes a nursery, gift shop and tearoom. It is certainly worth a visit.

New members are always welcome. Outings are advertised in the Oberon Review on the Thursday before the third Monday each month. If you would like to join us and visit some of the district’s most beautiful gardens, just turn up. Spring is around the corner and in this area we are spoiled for choice.

Oberon U3A's Creative Arts class recently had a major success - Rhonda Herbert took out second place in the Flora section of the Evans Arts Council's 2015 Art Show, which was held in Bathurst. The show attracts a lot of entries of high quality, so Rhonda is naturally thrilled with her success. She is seen here with teacher Mikaela Piper (on the left). Mikaela has been volunteering as a teacher for this class for almost two years and Rhonda, along with Mikaela's other students, can attest to the fact that they have all improved significantly in their work under Mikaela's patient guidance.

The U3A Creative Arts class will put on a display of their work in December. Watch this space for more information. In the meantime, well done Rhonda!

Dead Men Talking was very popular, facilitated by FOOLs. Oberon welcomed Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson 'risen from the dead' on Friday 31 July. Dead Men Talking is a show featuring a lively exchange between these icons of Australian poetry and song in the Leviticus Bar at Heaven's Gate. Max Cullen WAS Henry Lawson and Warren Fahey WAS Banjo Paterson. In an enthralling show we felt we were listening in at the next bar table. It was a sell-out as the first performance in their Central West Tour, and was timely also as a birthday 'thankyou' for former Friends of the Library's President, Kathy Sajowitz, recently elected Mayor. A Q & A followed, (one of very few in their tour, so Oberon was privileged), where they revealed how the show came about and the quirks of their on-stage characters - were they friends or rivals?

ABC TV Senior Reporter Philippa McDonald, with

her cameraman, interviewed Oberon folk around town, then the show was filmed and the opinion of the audience sought over birthday cake. The raffle of all Australian produce was won by a local who was called out mid-performance for a medical procedure at the hospital, and pleasantly surprised on return! (The show was aired on ABC Australia Wide 11.30am on News 24 Saturday 15 Aug and ABC Sunday 16 Aug at 10.30am).

Thanks to Friends of Oberon Library for organizing a great night. Extra funds raised go to support library projects, with contributions from Council and the community, including books for babies (there were 41 born in Oberon this last year) ANZAC International Women's Day, Waste to Art, children's and adults' workshops, local history cataloguing and many more projects.

The Herbie Clarke Memorial trophy returns to Oberon for the third time, this year won by Jocelyn Armstrong for 'Shelf'. Awarded annually by Sue Clarke Regional Waste to Art Coordinator for excellence in recycling, the major component of the piece was recycled wood. 'Shelf' was chosen from work from many council areas in Western New South Wales. Jocelyn is a teacher at Oberon Public School and enthusiastic Waste to Art supporter. John Smiley of the Wood Guys was a previous winner as was Connor Vavasour of Wiseman's Creek from Oberon Public School. 'Shelf' is partly welded from recycled metal and wood from her family farm. David's Sheppard's 'A Sulky Seat', another functional piece made from farm left overs, also impressed the Oberon judges and they awarded them equal first in the Community Functional section in Oberon. Both went on to the Regional Waste to Art Exhibition in Bathurst. This year Jocelyn Armstrong's

name has been added to the trophy, a beautifully carved horse finished with metal alloy, which Sue Clarke will present this to her at the Oberon Library on August 19th. The Regional exhibition ran through to August 30th, and we welcome the 'Herbie' back to Oberon!

Huge congratulations to Bryce Hotham who was chosen to referee the final of the Under 13's Small Schools final last month on August 5. Bryce has also been selected in the CRL Referees Development squad.

Bryce also plays footy for the Tigers Under 18 side, referees the Women's tag team as well as running the lines week in week out. We as a club are extremely proud of Bryce's commitment and dedication, very well deserved. Good luck to you Bryce on

all future ventures. 1st Division made it to the elimination final at Blayney on the 23 August.

Transport vehicle If you are over 65 years old, frail or a younger disabled person, then you are eligible to become a client. Once we have received your application form you will then be able to go to

appointments in Bathurst, Sydney, Lithgow or Orange. These appointments can be for medical, social or wellbeing. There will be a willing volunteer driver to take you door to door in comfort for a reasonable client contribution. There are also social trips which you can attend. You will enjoy mystery trips, or trips to designated locations. Future social trips are Wildwood Gardens, Bilpin on Wednesday 16 September 2015 and Rhododendron Gardens at Blackheath on Wednesday 7 October 2015 each at $10 for bus and lunch at own cost. Taxi Vouchers Members of the Oberon community (no age limit) are eligible to become Community Transport Taxi Voucher Clients as there is no local bus service around the streets of town. The only bus service is for out of town and to Bathurst. You will need to fill in a Taxi Voucher Client form to become eligible. Taxi vouchers have a value of $5 each with the balance payable by the client. Each book has 10 vouchers and is available each month. Community Bus Trips These trips are for Community Groups and Schools who wish to arrange trips to a variety of events, gardens or activities. The trip organiser will need to fill in a bus trip application and forward to Council. This service is available to all groups in the community. Please contact the Community Transport Coordinator on 6329 8100 for more information on all of the above.
