ABSTRACT

This Study explores the concern of school teenage girls in Ludhiana and aims to find out what does a school teenager girl mostly value in her life. It explores the influential factors like brand preference, colour preferences, most likely activity and their concerns in life.This result also justifies trend towards career among school teenager girls. A sample of 37 teenager girls (respondent) was examined and data was collected through questionnaire administered to people between the ages of 13 to 19.

CHAPTER-1 INTRODUCTIONThere is currently a lot of focus on the parenting of preschool and school age children with advice and guidance readily available from a variety of sources. This is beneficial as good relationships and parenting skills established in the early years form a helpful basis for parenting teenagers. But parenting a teenager is different to parenting a school aged child. Super Nanny stops nannying as soon as the children are taller and bigger than she is. During the pre-teen and teenage years the behaviour of the child that we thought we knew can change dramatically. They are going through another developmental stage of their life and as hormones kick in many parents perceive what they believe to be an extreme character change. Some parents feel challenged and threatened by the behaviour of this stage as their child takes the next step towards independence and being a mature being. As the behaviour can be so different from previous behaviour and challenge what has gone before many parents wonder if it is normal.But what is normal? Is there such a thing as normal? Its important to keep in mind that normal is just about any character display that can be interpreted as not too out of the ordinary. Normal behaviour of a typical teenager can include a wide range of behaviours and it is perhaps only when the behaviour becomes extreme or unsafe that parents need to be concerned. Most teenagers can be difficult to read from one moment to the next. Their behaviour is forever changing and they may swap between being excited and ready to take on the world to being disinterested and seemingly unmotivated. At times, they may crave attention from anyone who is within their immediate area, then suddenly decide that they want to be alone. It can certainly be an emotional roller coaster for everyone in the family. So, what are the main issues parents are concerned about and what can we do to assist our teens and our family through the unknown world of adolescents? Here are some common concerns and suggestions on how to approach them;

COMMON CONCERNS AND SUGGESTIONS HOW TO APPROACHRudeness to Parents - dont ignore the behaviour, address it immediately - talk with your child and explain your expectations - find someone your child trusts to talk to if you are having difficulty finding out what is wrong. Low Self-esteem - avoid making jokes about changes in your teen - explain that the changes they are going through are normal - complement your teen on their appearance Untidiness - let your child take responsibility for their own domains like their bedroom - decide on how much help and reminding you are going to give to your teen. Communication Breakdown-- understand that your teen may be confused about their thoughts and unable to express them to you be patient and give them time to sort their thoughts out as well as opportunity to discuss them openly with you. - make the time to listen to your teenager and show respect for their point of view Discipline-- Have clear boundaries and consequences, these may change as your child gets older. - Respect their need for privacy, but still monitor them. - Dont use sarcasm or put downs be logical when boundaries have been overstepped.

During this time it is important that parents continue to have a positive relationship with their child and to act as role models by practicing the values and beliefs that they value. Parenting by example becomes an important skill - open communication, respect for others views and property, responsibility for ones self and actions and being there. However, if parents are concerned at any stage about their teenagers behaviour or development, they should not hesitate to seek further assistance through their GP, school support person or other professional.

Issues With Teen Girls:-Instead of worrying about play dates and potty training, your concerns with your teenage daughter now are her safety and what kind of woman she will turn out to be. What are the issues facing teen girls today? It's important to know what you're dealing with when raising a teenage daughter, and what you need to look out for.Self-esteem IssuesThe teen years can make even the most self-confident girl doubt herself. Changes in her body might make her self-conscious and compare herself unfavourably to other girls her age. Emphasize to your daughter that everyone is different and has different strengths and weaknesses. Encourage her not to make celebrities and models her role models, but to instead focus on her schoolwork, athletic pursuits and hobbies.Peer PressureTeenage girls can experience peer pressure for the first time in high school or they might have experienced it to some degree even earlier. The pressure of peers can vary widely, from pressure to cut classes, dye her hair certaincolour, or listen to certain bands. But peers can also pressure her on more serious issues such as using alcohol and drugs.Auto SafetyThe Allstate Foundation reports that more 3,000 teenagers are killed in auto crashes each year. Don't allow your teenage daughter to drive with a bunch of friends in her car, and stress the importance of seat belts and following safe driving rules. If the state you live in has laws about the hours that teens can drive, enforce those rules. Some states have rules that include teens not being allowed to drive after 11 p.m. and having a decal on the car that denotes a teen driver is behind the wheel.DepressionAccording to the website Help Guide, depression is a serious problem facing teens. Signs of depression are a sudden loss of interest in activities she used to enjoy, trouble sleeping or excessive sleeping, talking about death or suicide, and dramatic weight gain or loss. If you notice any of these signs in your daughter, seek help immediately. Contact her paediatrician or call a suicide prevention hot line.Substance AbuseGirls ages 12 to 17 now use alcohol and drugs at the same rate as boys the same age, and have surpassed boys when it comes to misuse of prescription drugs and smoking, according to the website of Comp Drug, an Ohio substance abuse resource program. The reasons teen girls sometimes give for these behaviours are to lose weight, to feel more confident and to ease stress. If you suspect that your teen is abusing drugs or alcohol, get counselling or rehabilitation for her as soon as possible

CHAPTER-2OBJECTIVESTo explore the role of branding and purchasing this influences teenager girls to gain a richer and deeper understanding of their behaviour.

CHAPTER-3RESEARCH METHODOLOGYResearch methodology is a way to systematically solve the research problem. It may be understood as a science of studying how research is done scientifically. In it we study the various steps that are generally adopted by a researcher in studying his research problem along with the logic behind them. It is necessary for the researcher to know not only the research methods/techniques but also the methodology. Researchers not only need to know how to develop certain indices or tests, how to calculate the mean, the mode, the median or the standard deviation or chi-square, how to apply particular research techniques, but they also need to know which of these methods or techniques, are relevant and which are not, and what would they mean and indicate and why. Researchers also need to understand the assumptions underlying various techniques and they need to know the criteria by which they can decide that certain techniques and procedures will be applicable to certain problems and others will not. All this means that it is necessary for the researcher to design his methodology for his problem as the same may differ from problem to problem.

RESEARCH DESIGNDescriptive research is also called Statistical Research. The main goal of this type of research is to describe the data and characteristics about what is being studied. The idea behind this type of research is to study frequencies, averages, and other statistical calculations. Although this research is highly accurate, it does not gather the causes behind a situation. Descriptive research is mainly done when a researcher wants to gain a better understanding of a topic.

DATA COLLECTION

Primary data:Primary research is research used to collect data for a specific task. Types of primary data collection methods include Personal Observation, interviews, and questionnaire: The observation of the respondent by a trained observer or by electronic equipment (camera). The aim is to observe consumer responses and behaviour to a product or customer service. Personal Interviews: Face to face interview between an interviewer and the respondent at home or in shopping centres.We used different types of questions to collect the relevant data. Different types of questions used are:- Dichotomous Multiple Choice Questions Ranking Open ended

Sampling Plan: - Population- teenager girls of the age 13 to 19 Sample Unit- Ludhianateenage girls age bracket 13 to 19 Sample Size 37 Respondents Sampling technique- the sampling technique followed is census sampling. When the whole area or population of persons is contacted the method is known as census method.

CHAPTER-4ANALYSIS DATA & INTERPRETATION

Once the data is collected it needs to be thoroughly analysed in order to arrive to a valid conclusion. Since the chosen approach is qualitative in nature. The key areas under the chosen topic which has been analysed against the data available from Questionnaire are the general perception of the Indian teenager girls in Ludhiana, their personal buying habits.Demographics:Primary data was collected through questionnaire from the respondents.Q.1. What is your age?

In our research we have 37 respondents out of which we try to cover mostly all ages of teenager but from our respondents we have 65% are fall in age of 17 to 19 year old. Second maximum numbers of our respondent areof age 15 to 17 year old which is 25%.

Q.2. What do you value more in your life?

According to second question which we asked to our 37 respondents is about most valuable thing in their life 40% of our teenager girls respondent say that they value family relationship more than everything, followed by friendship which is of 21%. In Ludhiana school teenager girls are least valued about getting a job which is 5%.Q.3. What issues concerned you most?

School teenager girls are extremely concerned about personal safety which is of 42%, after that they are concerned about their increasing body weight which is around 36%. Among the extremely concerned, our respondents are least concerned about alcohol and drugs addiction. Q.4. What do you want to become in future?

In this Question we ask our respondent about their career concerns about what life they are looking for. And we got some amazing fact that 61% of our respondent wants to have professional career after that 16% wants to become Entrepreneur.Q.5. How many times do you go for shopping?

In our analysis among teenage girls went shopping in a month, we got a result that 36% of our respondents went twice a month for shopping after that 27% go shopping only once a month.

Q.6. How much do you prefer to spend in a month?

We want to know spending power of an average teenager girl in a month and here what we got, 38% of our respondents spend Rs. 3000 to Rs. 5000 followed by 36% which spend Rs. 1000 to Rs. 3000.Q.7. Does changing trends have any impact on your dressing?

In this question we came to know that change in fashion or any trends related to fashion will impact on buying decision of our respondents. 50 % of our respondents say yes as change in trends impact on their dressing after that 36% say sometimes. But interesting fact is that none of them said it doesnt impact on their dressing.

Q.8. With whom you prefer to go shopping?

Our teenager girls prefer to go shopping with their parents which is 34% and with friends which is 25%, followed by going alone or with brothers/sisters which is 20%.Q.9. Which of the activities you liked to involve in?

In the last Question we ask our respondents which of the activities they are involved in and we got some amazing fact that 40% of our respondents are extremely interested in reality shows after that they prefer to go out with friends which is 38%. Along with this our respondents extremely disinterested activities are art and craft and reading books.

CHAPTER-5Finding & SuggestionsIn our research on school teenager girl concern we have different finding which we point out from our data collection through questionnaire and these are:Professional Career:From the study, teenager girls dont seek herself as a future housewife but in fact they want to have a professional career or want to develop her.Concern of Appearance: As our research shows that girls are mostly concerned about their clothing and appearance. And they want to update themselves with upcoming fashion. And even spend most of their pocket money either of shoes or dresses.Enjoy going out:From the study, today teenager girls mostly easy pastime activity is going out with friends. Going out includes from going shopping with parents to going movies with friends.Spend most of time on Social Media:Social media is an average pastime for every person in todays generation as with a case with teenage girls. In our study,we came to know that Facebook, twitter and even YouTube majority of teenage girls spend more than an hour while visiting these sites.Brand Conscious:As our research shows that while going on shopping what first thing teenager girls find out is brand among their dressing or clothing or even in sandals. Average teenager girls are crazy about brands in their mind so they can spend more on brands then non-branded apparels.Black Colour: We came to know from our study that girls mostly prefer to wear black colour as it would be show them much fairer than average fair girl and it also help them to look slim.
