Consumer beauty.

Consumer beauty is an exhibition containing the work of three BA photography first year students. The work within this exhibition consists of three collections, all with notions surrounding that of the things we consume in the name of beauty. With the brief of ‘waste’ Rob comments on the inbuilt obsolescence within the cosmetic in-dustry, Jade’s piece looks at the disposable nature of the fashion industry and Emily explores the details of the embalming process and the taboo’s surrounding it.

The concept behind my work is concerning the inbuilt obsolescence with in the cosmetic industry. With the want for a beautiful looking product we are losing the functionality of the packaging because the shape of the bottle and applicator is not possible to reach the entirety of product.I am focusing on a product call urban decay, which down to the, genie shaped bottle, the applicator can only reach about 1/3 of the product.

Looking at my personal consumption and waste within the context of fashion and clothing items. Throwaway fashion is on the rise and with cheap cost clothing it doesn’t seem so bad when you’ve only worn an item once because you can just buy another one. I’m looking at the amount of clothes I buy and throw away and the idea that I see it as waste but others may value it more highly.

2 people die every second, 105 every minute, 6,316 every hour, 151,600 every day and 53,300,000 every year.I created this piece using surgical sutures, a tool used by embalmers to perform a submandibular suture which is done in order to secure the mandible postmortem. This process is solely done to make viewing the body easier for the bereaved, per-formed along with many other procedures to make the deceased appear at peace within death. This piece represents a small number of the people who pass through the embalming process, still just a small fraction in the grand scheme of things. In creating this I hope to question our current societies unhealthy attitudes toward death, a natural part of life.
