Considering CLT Products

Cross Laminated Timber •  A CLT panel consists of:

–  Several layers of kiln-dried lumber boards stacked in alternating directions

–  bonded with structural adhesives –  Pressed to form a solid, straight, rectangular panel.

•  CLT panels consist of an odd number of layers and may be sanded or prefinished before shipping

•  CLT panels are cut to size, including door and window openings

Items to consider

•  What is your CLT market ? •  Grade of CLT you would like to produce? •  Sizing of your panels to meet your market •  Sizing of raw materials for layup •  Open vs close time (Type of Glue) •  Manual or Automated •  Start with big footprint or smaller

This will define your plant layout

TYPE of CUSTOMER

Are you a wood producer? –  Sawmill –  Dry kilns –  Planer Mill

Are you a engineered wood Supplier? –  LVL –  Laminated Beam –  OSB –  Plywood –  ETC..

Wood Producer

How Could Your Sawmill Change •  Primary

–  Log bucking does it change your lengths –  Primary does it change the products you target

•  Secondary –  Optimization at the edger and the trimmer as visual grades will

play a role •  Drying

–  Moisture Content 10-12% mc •  Planer mill

–  Number of sorts –  Square edge lumber

Remember

•  Sawmilling is a destructive process –  You make your money efficiently breaking

your log in to the correct product at the correct time. (Recovery, yield)

•  CLT, additive process –  Building up a CLT panel from a raw

material.

ENGINEERED WOOD SUPPLIER

Sourcing your supply •  Best way to handle incoming materials •  Will the incoming material require

regrading •  Will the material require resizing or

shaping •  You are currently using glue will it be

the same glue

Lay up

Glue Application

OPEN – CLOSED Time

There are one part and two part glues available The type of glue you select will determine the production a press line can produce Typically 2:1 or 3:1

Pneumatic Press Configuration Modular every 6’

Air Bladder covers the surface

Hydraulic Press Modular every 4’
