Chair's Message

2015 was a very good year for the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy, full of terrific growth and progress. We welcomed new staff and Board members, accomplished several exciting conservation projects, and expanded part-nerships that will have a lasting and positive impact for our region. Our friends and supporters have become more and more numerous, and thanks to the broad support we received — from our board, advisory council, staff, volun-teers, donors and partners — we were able to expand and take advantage of opportunities to protect key parcels. Asdevelopment pressure grows, MHLC’s role in the region becomes increasingly crucial and we are so gratefulto our supporters.

The mission of the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy is to enhance the quality of life in the Mohawk and Hudson River valleys by preserving land for the benefit of current and future generations. We work to give local residents opportunities to connect with nature and to have preserves near their backyards, while helping to maintain the character and quality of our communities. We had several such land con-servation accomplishments in 2015. One highlight was a very generous donation to MHLC of a gem of a property in a highly developed area in Colonie. This preserve is a great addition to our portfolio of pro-tected landscapes where open space is scarce. We are looking forward to opening the new preserve in 2017.

With the increased capacity afforded to us by our new stewardship staff, MHLC was able to open two new preserves this year — the Bozen Kill and Van Dyke Preserves — which received a great reception from MHLC supporters and preserve neighbors, many of whom are now active volunteers working on the trailsand enjoying the fruits of their labors. We were also able to finalize easements in our identified strategic areasof the Helderberg Conservation Corridor and in Berne. These critical projects would not have been possiblewithout the help of our many partners and donors including the Open Space Institute, the Land Trust Alliance,The Nature Conservancy, Albany County, and the Town of Berne. In addition, this year saw a milestonefor the Rail Trail as Albany County completed the paving of the initial section from Albany to Bethlehem. Supportfor this exciting project is at an all-time high and MHLC's Summer Solstice Festival and Hike-a-thon eventwas attended by a record number of people. As we move forward to 2016, we are proud of the value we add to the region, through the efforts of ourtalented and dedicated staff with help from partners and volunteers, and pledge to continue with renewedfervor in the year to come.

Conservation SuccessThanks to the support and dedication of our donors, volunteers, board and staff, and partnerships with the Open Space Institute, The Nature Conservancy, Albany County, the Land Trust Alliance, the Town of New Scotland, and the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission, MHLC was able to complete many exciting land conservation projects in 2015, including the ones listed below.

• Fox Property | 70 acres | ColonieThis generous land donation in the highly developed Town of Colonie will provide public access to valuable open space along the Mohawk River. MHLC expects to open the new preserve to the public in 2017.

• Bozen Kill Preserve Opening | Knox/GuilderlandWith the help of volunteers, stewards and neighbors, MHLC opened the Bozen Kill Preserve to the public in the fall of 2015. The Preserve currentlyboasts two trails with views of the Bozen Kill and surrounding wildlife.

• Van Dyke Preserve Opening | BethlehemLocated in the heart of Bethlehem, MHLC's Van Dyke Preserve is a peaceful retreat for neighbors and visitors. The Preserve opened to the public in thefall of 2015.

• Hilton Barn | New ScotlandMHLC is poised to acquire property for the relocation of the historic Hilton Barn, a landmark in the Town of New Scotland that is threatened by demolition.

Community Events• Annual Meeting More than 115 members joined the Conservancy board and staff for the 2015Annual Meeting at Treviso Restaurant on Tuesday, April 14.

• Summer Solstice Festival and Hike-a-thonThe Summer Solstice Celebration on the Albany County Helderberg Hudson Rail Trail was a great success! Over 1,000 attendees and more than 100 vendors enjoyed a beautiful day on the trail, while more than 200 people participated in the Hike-a-thon featuring 5 MHLC preserves.

• Fall Fundraiser: A Forest Fête On Thursday, October 8, many good friends and supporters assembled at the New York State Museum to celebrate the accomplishments of the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy and to honor the life and work of Allison Bennett. The sold-out event was tremendously succesful in raising critical dollars in support of MHLC's conservation efforts.

Albany County Helderberg Hudson Rail TrailAs work on the Albany County Helderberg Hudson Rail Trail progresses, the number of friends, supporters and volunteers continues to grow exponentially. MHLC and its Friends of the Rail Trail (FORT) committee are thrilled with the outpouring of support for the Rail Trail and grateful for the dedication shown by the trail ambassadors week after week.

Albany County anticipates opening the newly paved portion of the trail, from the Port of Albany to Delaware Ave. in Delmar, in the spring of 2016. At a January 2016 public meeting, county representatives announced their intention to pave the entire trail, from Albany to Voorheesville, by 2017.

In 2015 MHLC began a series of naturalist programs with instructor David Muska of Ondatra Adventures. The series began with an Introduction to Mushroom Identification and continued into the new year with an Animal Track and Sign course. The programs offer a fun and educational outdoor experience for all ages. Mark your calendars for these upcoming naturalist programs offered by MHLC:

Thank you to the volunteers and leaders who made it possible.

Over 150 volunteers donated over 2,400 hours of their time to helping at MHLC preserves and events and in the office in 2015! Thank you volunteers!

pen space—farm fields, wooded areas, and undeveloped land—is one of the

things I value most about living in the Capital District. But like so many other places in the state and around the country, the open space that is a hallmark of southwestern Albany County is rapidly being lost to commercial and residential development. I am grateful for the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy's work to preserve the open space that is a cherished part of our communities. I support and volunteer for MHLC because I'm not taking for granted that the open, undeveloped areas in the towns and villages we love will always be there. Kathy Meany, Bozen Kill Preserve Steward
