“Scars” February Sermon Series
We all have them. Some come
from our own mistakes, some
from others and some from God.
Some actually make us stronger.
Not all scars are physical injuries,
there are also emotional and
spiritual scars. Join us during the
month of February as we take a
look at the scars we have, the scars we
have caused and how we can heal from all our hurt.
Connection Classes Sunday School 9:45 AM
Every Sunday we have several ways to learn from God’s
Word. Connection classes at Bethany are lead by teachers
committed to God’s Word and a desire to grow in His Love by
serving Him through teaching & leading others. There are
classes for all ages, including child care for children from birth
to Kindergarten; while parents are in class.
Perhaps you hear the Lord’s call to join a class and to grow
in His Love. If God is speaking to you and you have a desire to
learn, stop in and visit one of our classes. See the class
location list available at the Welcome Center or see Kathy
Tucker to find a class that will suit you.
Military & College Ministry Care Packages
We have been sending packages to the deployed military for many
years, thanks to our volunteers. We are now including sending
packages to our college students that are away from home. For College Students
we can send baked goods to them.
If you are willing to bake for them; please contact Ron or Gladys Buck. The
baked goods need to be brought to church on Feb 14th to be packed on the 15th.

Inclement Weather Closing Notice
When bad weather occurs, Bethany may need to cancel services and activities. If we
need to cancel we will try to post that information on the church website connect2bethany.org and the
Bethany Facebook page a few hours before services or activities are scheduled to begin. You may also
call the church if you have any questions.
Ladies, Lavender & Lessons... The Ladies were blessed by The Lord’s faithfulness, as taught to us through the book of Psalms. The day
was filled with great conversation as the ladies dug deeper into God’s Word for the wisdom in His
Scripture. All were touched by the love and laughter shared and will carry this insightful day with them.
The worship was uplifting and the lessons were encouraging; taking the time to listen to the Spirit speak
and rest in His
Presence…Priceless.
Thank you to all who
attended and those who
assisted in presenting
this relaxing retreat for
Women in Christ.

YOUTH NEWS 7TH-12TH GRADES
Souled Out—Going To War Wednesdays @7pm
When we look at life through the lens of idolatry (that is, making anything or anyone more important
than God), it becomes clear that there’s a war going on. The gods are at war, and their strength is not to
be underestimated. These gods clash for the throne of our hearts, and a lot is at stake. Everything about
us, everything we do, every relationship we have, everything we hope or dream or wish to become,
depends on what god wins that war. So for the month of February, every Wednesday night we’ll be taking
an honest look at our lives and hopefully see who’s winning the war: the small ‘g’ gods, or the one and
only capital ‘G’ God. Committing to being at Souled Out each week can have a huge influence on lives of
students & who they become. Know that each Wednesday night students will have a chance to build
relationships with others students in an atmosphere of fun and acceptance. They’ll hopefully discover
something about themselves, the God who loves them, and the plan He has for their lives. If you’re a
student or have a JR or SR HI aged son or daughter, don’t let them miss a single Wednesday night,
starting at 7pm.
Camp Barakel Winter Retreat
Our JR & SR HI students are headed back to Camp Barakel on February 5-7 for our annual winter
retreat. Think broom hockey, tubing (with a tow rope!), great food, ice skating, cross country skiing, all you
can drink hot chocolate, and so much more! Get your $40 non-refundable deposit to Robyn Miller no later
than Jan. 31 with the remaining money due by Feb. 3. Flyers are available at the Welcome Center, Teen
Lobby area or online (check the church webpage or on the Souled Out Facebook page ... see below). Of
course you could always see Pastor Mike if you have any questions as well.
All Night Event
This is no joke … our annual All Night Event at the Warren Rec Center is on April 1, April Fool’s Day.
Seriously, I’m not joking. This night is packed with fun stuff all for the low low price of $25.00. This night
kicks off with a program featuring mentalist/illusionist Bryan Drake. It also includes pizza, pop, swimming
in the indoor pool and water park, inflatable games, a movie, big screen Xbox games, basketball,
volleyball, an epic dodgeball tournament, a live game show with some valuable prizes and a movie. All
you need to do is turn in your $25, a signed permission slip and an annual medical release form (if you
haven’t filled one out already) no later than Wednesday March 30. We will meet at church at 9:15pm and
ride together over to the Rec Center.

3 Bethany Newsletter FEBRUARY 2016
Missionary of the week, February 2016 February 7 Emilie Vinson is a journalist with CRU (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ). Her stories
have been published in several issues of CRU magazine, and she frequently travels to exotic places to
get stories of CRU’s ministries. Emily asks for prayers of restoration in the areas of work, ministry, and
health after an exceptionally challenging year.
February 14 Ev & Jan Dow retired after planting churches in Ecuador, Colombia, and Mexico and are
now living in Bradenton, FL in the same park Evelyn Waller lives. There they are working in a Spanish
church called Iglesia Christiana Hispana. Pray as they integrate into this church, sharing the Word of
God and the discipleship materials they used in South America.
February 21 Francois & Valerie Picard live and minister in Quebec, where less than 5% of the people
are considered to be Protestant and even fewer are Evangelical Christians. According to Operation World
3,000 more churches need to be planted just in Quebec. Francois is the president of SEMBEC
(Seminary of Quebec) and is actively engaged in the recruitment and training of pastors and church
planters. Both widowed, Francois recently married Valerie. Now the family includes, not only Jeremie,
but also Zachary, Benjamin, Melodie, and Ezekiel. Pray that this blended family may grow in unity. Also,
pray for the salvation of Valerie’s father who is battling cancer.
February 28 Ed & Marian Caes lived and worked for many years in Southern Europe. They recently
celebrated 64 years of marriage and are enjoying good health. They are helping and encouraging a
young church in the Wheaton, Illinois area. Ed and Marian are asking others to pray for four unsaved
grandchildren and for the continued training of Christian workers in Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal.
Note: If you would like more information about any of these missionaries, please contact any member of the Mission Board.
SPOTLUGHT ON MISSIONS
Advancing the Kingdom To learn some of the shear scope of what God is doing to
advance His Kingdom in our times is mind boggling. Despite
many obstacles to discourage reaching people groups who
have never heard the gospel presented in a culturally relevant
way, God is revealing His presence and spreading his Church as never before.
Sharon Samson and I (Randy Hoover) have just completed a 15 week course, called “Perspectives on
the World Christian Movement”. I heard the course also referred to as “discipleship in missions”. Each
week we heard two presentations by expert mission speakers and had activities including a prayer time to
round out the 3 hour class. The course required over 500 pages of selected readings, weekly review
tests, 5 written personal responses and an interactive project.
In the months ahead, I hope to share many of the lessons presented in this class. Some might be
startling to you. One session that struck me was how individual personal decisions, which are so much a
part of how we in the West come to Christ, are frowned upon by other “relational cultures” where
decisions are made collectively. Whole families and villages are deciding to accept Jesus together and the
commitment of the individuals in these groups is real and prolonged.
On behalf of myself and Sharon, please accept our thanks Bethany for helping us with half the cost of
this class. I am sure we will in time, make good use of the investment in us by multiplying what we have
learned in others. I would love for many at Bethany to take this course next time. Below is a link to the
course, I encourage you to view it at www.perspectives.org/About Submitted by, Randy Hoover

information or if you
have any questions.
EVENTS
Bethany’s Fleet Investing in the future
The Trustees are in search of a slightly used bus for Bethany. This will be a 15
passenger vehicle and can be driven by any approved Bethany driver. Many
ministries will benefit from this acquisition for a safe and comfortable means of
transportation. The membership voted to approve this purchase not to exceed
$30,000 at the January 24 Business Meeting.
PrimeTimers February Event Wednesday, February 24th
The PrimeTimers will be enjoying the new Christian film “Risen,” at the AMC Forum 30
at Hall Rd & Mound in Sterling Heights. The film begins at 10:45 am. Following the film
they will meet for lunch at the Grand Azteca Mexican Restaurant at 13100 Hall Rd in
Sterling Heights, at approximately 1:00pm. Further information and flyers may be found
at the Welcome Center.
“Risen,” was produced by Affirm Films, the faith-based division of Sony Pictures. It
follows the epic Biblical story of the Resurrection, as told through the eyes of a non-believer. Clavius, a powerful
Roman Military Tribune, and his aide Lucius, are tasked with solving the mystery of what happened to Jesus in the
weeks following the crucifixion, in order to disprove the rumors of a risen Messiah and prevent an uprising in
Jerusalem. You can watch the movie trailer at: www.risen-movie.com The movie is rated PG-13, due to violence.
Cost for the movie is $5.00 and is payable to Sheryl MacPhee. Those needing a ride must be at the church by
9:30am for a 9:45am departure to the theater. Please sign up at the Welcome Center.
Library Featured Resource of the Month Angels Walking by Karen Kingsbury
Angels Walking, the first book in Karen Kingsbury’s new series is a must read. In each
book, The Angels Walking team is assigned to a desperate mission. When angels walk, most
people never know; never see. But they are there. And sometimes the stakes are so high, all
of heaven stands ready.
In book one, a one-time national baseball hero, Tyler Ames, has lost everyone he loves on
a quest to make it to the big leagues. Then, just when things seem to be turning around, Tyler
hits rock bottom. Across the country, Tyler’s only love, Sami Dawson, has moved on.
A series of small miracles leads Tyler to a maintenance job at a retirement home and friendship with Virginia
Hutcheson, an old woman with Alzheimer’s, who strangely might have the answers he so desperately seeks.
A team of Angels takes on the mission to see hope restored for Tyler, Sami, and Virginia. Can the small and
seemingly insignificant actions of the unseen bring healing and redemption? Can the words of a stranger restore
lost love? Every journey begins with a step. It is time for the mission to begin.
