Uptown Chamber of CommercePresident/CEO - Miranda Hilton
Happy New Year and Hello 2020! We are very excited about our new Uptown Chamber name and for what the future has in store for our membership. Connecting Temple Terrace, Tampa and
Hillsborough County, Connecting our Chamber with so many opportunities, Connecting members to one another and growing more business members to our organization. While our name is changing, our efforts are not. Fifty-six years ago, our Chamber made a commitment to focus on transformative work that impacts the greater community. At no other time have we been more prepared to take this bold step than now. More than ever, we are seeing Business, Healthcare, Education, Tourism, and Community working collaboratively across invisible borders to create a regional brand that can compete in today’s economy. We are seizing the opportunity. In a globally connected economy, status quo isn’t good enough. Changing our name positions us better in recruiting new businesses and people to locate to our Community. That means more jobs and a vibrant economy for all. Our goal is to make our region a better place to live, work and play. Through the Chambers efforts, our visibility has greatly increased. We stand tall at the intersection of business and community. Our Chamber is being included in district area initiatives, task forces, and meetings, including regional and state activities. We support the success of small businesses and are passionate about creating connections. Connecting Temple Terrace, Tampa and Hillsborough County. We think regionally but act locally and we are inspired by what our future holds! As always, my door is always open and I am only a phone call away, please reach out if I can ever be of service.

First wheelchair accessible baseball fields in Hillsborough County now open for play Ribbon cutting ceremony • Monday, January 6, 2020. All are welcome Players with special needs now have a baseball field that is wheelchair accessible, safer for play and allow even more opportunities for children with special needs and mobility issues to play baseball.
The State of Florida and Hillsborough County funded the project located at the Temple Terrace Parks & Recreation - Family Recreation Complex at 6700 Whiteway Drive.
Buddy Baseball is a non-competitive recreational league for boys and girls with special needs where players are paired with a buddy to assist them on the field. Since the league’s inception in 2009, the league has been playing on traditional clay and sod softball fields which can be challenging for children with mobility issues. Currently there are no other synthetic rubber baseball fields in Hillsborough County for children with special needs.
“The need for these fields is evident by the growth of our league which has grown to 20 teams for each of our spring and fall seasons” said Russ Oberbroeckling, Buddy Baseball founder and executive director. “We’re overwhelmed by the support provided by our elected officials to this much-needed project to create an even better setting where children with unique needs are understood and embraced.”
Buddy Baseball is seeking additional donations and sponsorships to support the growing league. All donations are a tax-deductible investment to the league. Donations can be made online at http://buddybaseball.org/sponsorships/donations/ or by contacting Russ Oberbroeckling, executive director at [email protected].
Congratulations to Focus Café on the donation from Bay Area Plumbing and Rotary Club of Temple
Terrace for their brand new triple sink and hand washing station!

“Same Ole” Happen in 2020
You have set your goal. You have started your program. You are eating right (well almost…and hey…it is better than last year!!) You feel better. You still want to look better. It will happen!!! But, and you know this, it takes time, consistency, patience, mo-tivation, hard work, etc. There will be times (many of them), that you just will not have the time, motivation, etc. to stick to any plan. That is OK. Don’t beat yourself up over a “slip up” on the program. Tomorrow really is a new day. A day to reset your plan.
It doesn’t matter what your goals or dreams or resolutions are—without a reset button, most will fall by the way side. We are all humans, not robots. So, let’s start again and again and again. The only way your goals, dreams and resolutions will not work, is if you give up. Don’t be a quitter. Relax and reset. It doesn’t matter how many times you need to reset. What matters is that you “do”. The conscious effort along with resetting and doing is going to get your results. Results are going to get you closer to your goals. Keep
your eye on what you are working to accomplish.
Develop an action plan for every goal. So, for example, a healthy eat-ing resolution may involve: learning more about good nutrition, visiting a nutritionist, finding new ways to adapt your recipes, buying containers to pack lunches, learning how to prepare new foods and planning extra time for shopping and cooking. Don’t over-whelm yourself with every action step at once, but focus on a few things each day.
Everything is a choice. You choose to watch TV instead of exercising or to de-stress by eating instead of talking to someone. Before you act, stop and ask yourself if this “solution” will really help you in the long run.
So now that you know not to quit
and just reset or restart- keep it going. Think about what you will feel like and/or look like reaching your goal. Get positive pictures of what you want and look at them daily. Read positive posts that that will help keep your at-titude on the right track. Surround yourself with positive folks who will encourage you with your quest. Keep a daily journal of how your progress is going. Write down your goal where you can see it daily. Find someone to keep you accountable daily. Soul search and come up with the real rea-son that you want to reach your goal. Celebrate your successes daily that help you get to your goal. Make sure to plan a big reward for reaching your goal. (also plan several small rewards along the way.) Remember; the mind is powerful. If you believe it, you re-ally can achieve it!!!

What are you hoping to achieve next year?
You’ve probably started giving it some thought. Perhaps you’ve even considered one or two resolutions to tackle this January.
Here’s the thing, though: New Year’s resolutions rarely work.
This isn’t a matter of opinion. Research shows that over 80% of New Year’s resolutions are abandoned by the middle of February. There are several reasons for this, but the biggest is that, fundamentally, a New Year’s resolution is little more than a goal.
Any manager, skilled professional, or other high achiever knows that most goals, even those given with the best of intentions, fail to materialize.
Unless... they come with a plan.
Countless studies tell us that you are far more likely to succeed when you have identified a simple, specific, concrete set of actions you intend to implement.
So, personally, I don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions. I believe in New Year’s plans.
With that in mind, I have something to share with you today. It’s a free goal setting guide to help you crystalize your plans for 2020.
To get this guide, simply go to www.betterucoaching.com and sign up for our newsletter at the bottom of the page. Not only will you get our valuable Goal Setting Guide, but you will also register to receive weekly emails containing great business and productivity ideas that will help propel you and your business to the next level.

3 Tips to Reduce the Riskof Renting to Pets Owners
70 percent of renters have pets which can make them a great revenue stream. However, pets can also cause extensive damage to a rental property which can take away from your bottom line. Here are 3 tips to protect property owners from the risk of renting to pet owners while helping them gain the benefits of renting to pet owners. • Screen the Pets – At first this may sound like a joke but I assure you that it is no joke. You should be screening pets the same way you screen their owners. This helps reduce the risk of that pet causing damage to the property and it shows that you have performed your due diligence. • Require a Pet Fee – Pet fees can help cover the cost associated with repairing the property if the pet causes any damage to the property. The fact is any amount that will help defray the cost of damages to your property helps your bottom line. Psychologically, it also puts the tenant in the mindset that there is a financial impact to any damage as a result of the pet so they may be more mindful of their pet’s activities. • Require Insurance – I am a firm believer in insurance in business but particularly in property management. Anytime you can mitigate a risk by transferring the liability to an insurance company you should absolutely take advantage of that; especially if you don’t have to pay for that insurance. In this case, you are requiring the renter to pay for the insurance and you are having them list you as an additional insured.
By implementing these 3 simple tips, property owners can gain all of the advantages of renting to pet owners while protecting themselves from the risk of renting to pet owners.

ReDefiners World Languages ReDefining Language Learning...for a Brighter Future!
More Than Languages… We are a nonprofit organization made up of a bunch of folks who believe in the power of multilingualism, equity in educational opportunities and are willing to go against the grain to ensure world language education becomes commonplace, for every child, starting with those of Tampa Bay. K-5 Language Enrichment Classes
Students throughout Hillsborough County participate in our communicative focused classes at ReDefiners’ Center, school sites and community centers during or after-school. With the support of the community, we are getting help to provide program scholarships to low-moderate income families based upon their income.
Adult Language Enrichment Classes Multilingualism in today’s globalized society is often necessary for career advancement. Adult classes focus on the development of key community skills.
Our Spring Language Programs start January 11, 2020!

Time: The Greatest Gift
Time. We never seem to have enough, and just spent so much looking for the perfect gift. For a foster child, the gift of a few hours of your time each month would be appreciated for years to come.
Remember some of your childhood holidays. Children in foster care may have good or bad memories, or may be forming first memories. Volunteers with Guardian ad Litem can help a child year round by advocating for services, speaking on the child’s behalf in court, and simply letting them know someone really cares.
If helping others is one of your New Year’s Resolutions, attend an Information Session to learn more about what volunteers do and how they make a difference in a child’s life. Sessions are held weekly, and times and locations can be found at www.galtampa.org.
“Having someone to listen, show up consistently, and demonstrate that they care is a “gift” that will never be forgotten,” says Tabitha Lambert, Guardian ad Litem 13th Circuit Director. The Tampa Bay area has more children in the dependency system than any other part of Florida, children who were abused, abandoned, or neglected, and need a volunteer’s support.
Foster children with an advocate often do better in school, receive more services, and find a forever family more quickly than a child without one. Take a few minutes to see how you can be a part of those results. For more information about the Guardian ad Litem program, call 813-272-5110 or visit www.galtampa.org.

Is your A/C ready for the change of season? The Importance of Maintenance on Your A/C
Three things we must have in Florida: Air conditioning, a car and a phone.Did you know your A/C unit loses around 5% of its efficiency for each year that it runs? Over time, components weaken & break down. Without routine maintenance, you could possibly pay costly repair bills or have to replace the unit.
You can keep your A/C running at full capacity by scheduling a regular tune-up. A little TLC once or twice a year will save you money.
Save on your electric bill: Did you know that 66% of your electric bill comes from your A/C? It will pull more & more power for each year that it goes without maintenance. Maintenance can keep that unit running at up to 95% of its original efficiency. Maintenance effectively doubles the life span of the average residential system.Save on repairs: It costs more to repair something than it does to maintain it. It’s when temperatures are high that your A/C is most likely to break down. Regular maintenance decreases the chances of your A/C breaking down unexpectedly. We offer a 28 point checklist to include: checking your refrigerant charge, compressor & fan amps, flushing & vacuuming the drain line & pan. An overall performance check. A small leak can end up doing serious damage if the problem is allowed to escalate. Invest now, save later.
Save your warranty: You may have a great warranty with your A/C unit. Did you know that your factory warranty may be voided if you neglect maintenance? Many manufacturers require annual maintenance by a trained professional for the warranty to be honored. Your A/C may still be under warranty, if you neglect maintenance, you may have to pay for repairs out of pocket.
Save your sanity: Did you know not having maintenance done is the equivalent of driving your car for 100,000 miles without an oil change? Protect your most expensive appliance in your home & schedule your maintenance. We offer Chamber Members discounted rates!
