GBS- a nostalgia

Dr. Prashant.V.Yatgiri

Position held at Global Business School, Hubli

Professor. (2007-2011)

Director (June 2010- Dec 2011)

GBS (Aug 2007 to Feb 2012) was my first change in the field of

academics after having a success stint in teaching marketing at KLES’s

IMSR, Hubli (Sep 1998 to July 2007). I just cannot forget my first ever

batch of students at IMSR who ensured my strong foothold in the field of academics …. I

had often reiterated this aspect to my students at GBS too.

My changeover to GBS was definitely not a planned one, but do acknowledge lot of

personalities who arouse interest in the change. 1st August, 2007 was the start of an

ambitious journey, both for GBS as an institution, and personally for me also as a first

change. The big task for all of us was to admit the first ever batch at GBS knowing very well

we did not have adequate aspects to discuss /demonstrate as the institution was in its start

phase. But believe me, we had to really convey some aspiring candidates that there were no

vacancies at GBS and possibly would need to wait in case of any drop-outs/cancellations!!!

It is at this stage we realized that admissions stand to have a high positive correlation with

various capabilities at the institute and not just a great legacy of the past!!. We were very

quick to convert this into our positioning in North Karnataka market and very soon GBS

started getting the much needed acknowledgement as a destination for excellent

academics, coupled with self-development activities (We were some of the few institutes

who launch their National Level Management Festival ‘Galacto’ in the very first year of

existence), and of course, all this happening in an infrastructure different from others.. I

personally was a fan of the ‘Student Centric Model’ at GBS with the faculty playing a key

role in taking the institution to great heights. Nevertheless we had our own bumpy rides in

the process, but thoroughly enjoyed every outcome.

Setting higher benchmarks soon became a culture at GBS and extended to admission

process, infrastructure design and building, staff/faculty recruitment procedure, co-

curricular and extra-curricular activities. At this juncture the members of the management

need to be acknowledged for the immense belief and unstinted support placed in all of us

that motivated us to think beyond. My stint as the Director of the institution (June 2010-

Dec 2011) gave me the much needed opportunity to test my innate skills of leading an

5

institution at a very crucial stage when GBS was beginning to show immense potential to be

amongst the front-runners in North Karnataka Area. I was blessed with a good group of

sixteen faculty members and able support of highly motivated non-teaching staff. No

wonder we used to proudly call ourselves ‘TEAM GBS’. I was happy to be a part of that team

at GBS which witnessed the doubling of batch size from 60 to 120, the all unforgettable

International Tour to Malaysia (A large contingent of 115 students from 2010-2012 batch),

Staff outings to Yellapur River Resort and Dandeli and much more.

I always believed that in days of intense competition, the only way to remain on the top is

to continuously keep improving on all fronts be it faculty, placements, infrastructure,

activities etc. I had mixed results on my above endeavours, but nevertheless, have the

satisfaction that I leave behind GBS that has come of age …… It only needs to keep

innovating further, take some calculated risks, challenge the limits and make attempts to

strengthen the existing model, which I sincerely hope should just not be an issue!!

Presently serving in an institution of repute (T.A.Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) listed

in the top 20 B-Schools in India, I realize that it takes a lot of sacrifice/hard work to reach

to the top, so also a group of selfless people to work for the same. Glad to note that GBS is

on the right trajectory, but needs to be extremely clear about its path in the future and also

have lots of patience in achieving the same.

All the very best TEAM GBS …

BLOOD DONATION

GBS conducted blood donation camps in association with Rotary clubs navanagar, Hubli Jan12 2012. GBS has been partnering with Rotary club in organizing blood donation every year for the past three years.

The objective of these camp is not just to donate blood units but also to make students aware about blood donation and its benefits. We make every effort to motivate students to come forward and donate for this noble cause. We specially encourage first time donors as we believe that once the initial hesitation/fear goes away, the donor starts enjoying and look forward to the next camp!!

BENEFITS OF BLOOD DONATION

1. It reduces the chances of heart disease.

2. Enhance the production of new Red Blood Cells (RBC)

3. It also helps in fighting hemochromatosis. (A disorder that results in too much iron being absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract)

4. Burns calories. 5. Basic blood test and few

physical tests like weight/BP etc are done free of cost before donation.

6. The biggest of them all. Your one unit of blood (Approx 350 ml) can potentially save three lives. The feeling is amazing.

From GBS 40 units of blood from

students and staff were collected.

Let’s donate life through blood

MAKARA SHANKRANTI

Makara Shankranti is the harvest festival, a new year and the festival of rejoicing and

celebrations embracing the entire household friends and neighbors, the servants and the

poor, the cows, and then all other living creatures symbolizes universal love and kindness.

HOW UNIQUE IT WAS THIS YEAR AT GBS?

Yes, this year it was really unique at Global business School, Every time it was marked as a

holiday at GBS. But this year an

idea popped up in the mind of GBS

Members that why not we make it

unique and remarkable event.

Thus ended up in deciding that all

will dine together to mark the eve

of MAKAR SANAKRATHI by

visiting nearby beautiful Unkal

Lake.The idea that came into

reality on 14th January was marked

with joy embracing the entire

human resource of organization

from top to bottom celebrating the festival with MID DAY MEAL.

As we entered the Unkal Lake it

was flooded with thousands of

people displaying the same

culture of unity and universal

love and kindness, yes indeed it

was a unique experience to all the

members of GBS having lunch in

small shade, scorching sun

beating down from above. The

space that staff struggled for was

a competition by itself, as

thousands of families were busy

to get their share of space to dine. The delicious food ordered from one of the GBS staff and

left no traces to complain for.

We all find and experience such gesture get together from our own respective family.

Though not related to each other biological but the same love and affection offered by the

staff was a wonderful experience. When organization offers the same love and affection as

our family, then what’s there to complain for, all are enforced to come together and gave

their best to make GBS come with flying colors.

GBS has really inculcated such high standard and unique culture that makes us feel that we

are ONE though difference arises at many point of time but overcoming such differences is

the Culture at Global Business School.

GBS VISITS MSPL, HOSPET

On 24th January, 2013

Significance of an Industrial Visit:

Industry interface enables students to analyze and understand the dynamics of the

industry. These visits provide students with an adequate exposure in tackling live

problems of an industrial entity. As part of a visit, students can encounter work in progress

and relevant demonstrations. The significance of Industrial Tour lies in giving exposure to

the students in the concerned industry. This not only facilitates the personal relation with

the industry people but also will be helpful in bringing the industry for placement and

training.

Industrial Visits at GBS:

GBS offers industrial visit for all the students of MBA. Every semester there is an

industrial trip for one day, in the last visit , students have visited Forbes Campbell and Vega

[Belgaum] and Bisleri [GOA]. So this semester both the classes [Petronas & Scholastics ]

have visited to MSPL-Pellet plant – Hospet On 24th January 2013.

About MSPL, Hospet:

MSPL Limited, is an iron ore mining, processing and a leading export company with

49 years of expertise . According to the Federation of Indian Mineral Industries, they were

the first private company in India to receive a licence for export of high grade Iron Ore

(having a Fe content of 64% or more).

They are also one of India’s leading exporters of high-grade processed Iron Ore to

China. They are the flagship company of the Baldota Group of Companies, which are

privately owned pre-dominantly by the Baldota family.

Page 14: Connecting Stakeholders Building Relationship · Presently serving in an institution of repute (T.A.Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) listed in the top 20 B-Schools in India, I realize

14

MSPL is an ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001:1996 and OHSAS 18001:1999 certified

company. According to Bureau Veritas , they were the first unit certified in the mining

sector in India for upgrades to ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004 status.

GBS visits MSPL, Hospet:

GBS visited MSPL,. MSPL is about two and ahalf hour journey from Hubli. The

following points gives the snapshot of the happenings at MSPL

1. At MSPL , we were introduced to the GM-HR, Mr.Gangadhar. He recieved us warmly

and briefed us about the plant and its operations.

2. The students were divided into 3 batches each and were taken inside the plant.

3. The process was as follows:

The iron ore in the form of hematite, magnetite, limonite or siderite forms the raw

material. The ore is treated with additives like bentonite and washed. Then the iron-

ore is crushed using a hammer crusher and an impact crusher. After crushing the

ore is sent through a magnetic separator and then into a ball mill for grinding. After

grinding the ore is again sent in to magnetic separator and a gravity separator

respectively. Then the ore is heated in three furnaces having temperatures between

3000-6000 degree Celsius. Then the molten metal is filtered out the form of pellet

and kept ready for dispatch.

4. Most of the equipments were under breakdown maintenance.

5. The daily output of the plant is about 3000 tons per day and capital investment is

450 crores.

We came out of the plant at 3.00 pm and took our lunch at 3.30 pm at Hospet.

Fun along the way:

The students were in a joyous mood and celebrated the birthday of Vikas Illur on

the way. On our way back we visited the Tungabhadra Dam and the musical Fountain.

Overall it was both a learning and joyful experience.

The Students’ experience:

The overall visit was full of learning with lots of enjoyment. It is really good to visit

manufacturing industries than service sectors. Practically we observed the process and the

employees of MSPL were very co-operative ad supportive towards students.

Teach Yourself To Think (Paperback)

Edward de Bono's masterly book offers a structure that broadens our

ability to respond and cope with a vast range of situations. Teach Yourself

to Think is software for the brain, turning it into a successful thinking

mechanism, and, as such, will prove of immense value to us all.

About The Author Edward de Bono has had faculty appointments at the universities of

Oxford, London, Cambridge and Harvard. He is widely regarded as the

leading authority in the direct teaching of thinking as a skill. He originated

the concept of lateral thinking and developed formal techniques for

deliberate creative thinking. He has written fifty-seven books, which have been translated into

thirty-four languages, has made two television series and there are over 4,000,000 references to

his work on the Internet.

Dr. de Bono has been invited to lecture in fifty-two countries and to address major international

conferences. In 1989 he was asked to chair a special meeting of Nobel Prize laureates. His

instruction in thinking has been sought by some of the leading business corporations in the world

such as IBM, Du Pont, Shell, Eriksson, McKinseys, Ciba-Geigy, Ford and many others. He has

had a planet named after him by the International Astronomic Union and was named by a group

of university professors in South Africa as one of the 250 people in all of history who have

contributed most to humanity.

Dr. de Bono runs the most widely used programme for the direct teaching of thinking in schools.

This is now in use in many countries around the world.

Dr. de Bono's key contribution has been his understanding of the brain as a self-organizing

system. From this solid base he set out to design practical tools for thinking. His work is in use

equally in the boardrooms of some of the world's largest corporations and with four-year-olds in

school. His design of the Six Hats method provides, for the first time, Western thinking with a

constructive idiom instead of adversarial argument. His work is in use in ??lite gifted schools,

rural schools in South Africa and Khmer villages in Cambodia. The appeal of Dr. de Bono's

work is its simplicity and practicality.

The Shift : The Future for Work is Already Here (Paperback)

The Shift – The Future for Work is Already Here was published by Harper

Collins in the year 2011. Lynda Gratton, in her book, talks about the

revolution in employment and the speed at which the nature of work life is

changing. She predicts future trends, a reworking of the past work lives

because of the drastic changes brought in by technological enhancement and

globalisation, as well as those brought in by demographic and societal

changes.

The information provided in the book is well researched as Lynda, a

Professor at The London Business School, has worked in companies all over

the world to study the future of employment. She explains the potential impact of these changes

on the future working lives of people and also guides the readers to prepare themselves to face

the changes.

Doing what is right: The CRISIL Story

This book tells the unique story of an intrepid company that made it big

against all odds, relying on nothing other than its intellectual capital and

the power of its vision. Founded in the regulated and stagnant Indian

economy of the late 1980s, offering a credit rating service that had no

takers, and without any real assets or capital, CRISIL seemed destined to

fail. Instead, it became one of Indias most respected companies, redefining

its vision from being India- focused to playing a quiet but critical role in

global markets.

This is a story of razor-sharp analytics, unshakeable values and sheer grit.

It is also a story of leaders with very different styles, who brought it all together over a quarter of

a century. A narrative that, above all, shows that doing well can go hand in hand with doing what

is right.

A Bank for the Buck: The Story of HDFC Bank

This is the story of the birth and growth of India's most valued Bank

HDFC Bank Ltd against the backdrop of the new bank movement in

India that started in 1994 when the Reserve Bank of India opened up

the sector to introduce competition and to force banks to be efficient

and more productive.

Many books have tried to give meaning to India's recent history, to

put it in the larger context of a complicated and confounding society,

but this effort stands out because it does something that has been

difficult to attempt retelling the story of modern India through the lens

of business.

Given the author's familiarity with bankers, policy makers and central bankers, this fast-paced,

jargon-free book, written for a wide audience, brings to life an engrossing and sweeping tale of

21st century India, with all its foibles and charms.
