Antonette Golikidis of Little Innoscents has claimed the prestigious title of AusMumpreneur of the Year at the 2010 AusMumpreneur awards ceremony.

Connect2Mums recognises the incredible success of Antonette’s business and how she manages her time for work and family. She sees how important it is to have a healthy balance between the two, leading to her title of AusMumpreneur for 2010.

The ceremony was an opportunity for business mums and dads to celebrate and recognise the best and brightest in the industry, acknowledging success in business, product development, services and innovation. Queensland minister for women Karen Struthers attended the gala event and Queensland Premier Anna Bligh recorded a special video message for the night.

From Australia and New Zealand, mums - and some dads, - were able to witness first hand their motivation and inspiration for balancing family time with their own small and successful businesses.

Mother-of-two, Antonette Golikidis, produced a wide range of Australian Certified Organic natural baby skin care products after struggling to find natural, organic and affordable products while she was pregnant.

“When I fell pregnant with my first child, I searched for baby products that were chemical free. I was disappointed to find a limited range of products, which were often difficult to locate, overly expensive, or offered misleading information. I found that there were products out there claiming to be pure, natural and organic, however after reading the labels closely, although containing some organic ingredients, they also contained combinations of synthetic ingredients and preservatives within their formulations. It was at this point that I decided to develop my own baby care range.”

Antonette started the business herself making the products in her kitchen. Friends and family would come by and help her out and so would the neighbours who could smell the cooking a mile away with the delicious scents lingering in the street! As the business grew Antonette outsourced her manufacturing to a wonderful company which is also based in Melbourne.

“Once I had the idea to bring out a range I stopped all other ventures and solely worked on formulating the range which took over 10 months of trials & testing. The next step was to have the product

range certified by one of the world’s leading organic certification bodies - ACO (Australian Certified Organic). This was important to me because I wanted to give my consumers the assurance that our products have been manufactured and handled according to strict guidelines completely free of any chemicals. I have joined various boards within the industry and I still struggle with the idea that no regulatory body oversees what is produced for the Australian baby care industry. No standards are yet in place to truly identify claims made about natural or organic products.” Antonette explains.

Sticking to a Budget has been a challenge for the business – beginning a small business often means you have a fabulous idea but limited cash flow, so one of the most difficult hurdles has been learning how to spend money, so that the expenditure is cost effective for the business.

Antonette has also found juggling a business along with motherhood at times a huge challenge. “I adore my children and want to spend as much time as I can with them so I tend to work late at night. Business is a big part of my life but what I have learnt over my life experience is that life must fundamentally include family fun, personal fulfilment and harmony. So I work from home, and I get to look out my backyard window where the kids are digging up dirt and getting up to mischief – and I feel like I’m there with them - that’s exactly where I want to be and its probably one of the best things about what I do.” Antonette says.

natural and safe-for-babies offering a healthy alternative

Antonette believes you must also take your vision and turn it into action, explaining that “It’s crucial to have a clear vision of the business and express this in a concise business plan. Taking thoughts out of your mind and putting them onto paper makes you realise what your true potential is. Without a vision or dreams my company would not even exist.” Antonette says.

Antonette is proud to win this prestigious award and hopes that she can inspire other mumpreneurs. She was thrilled to accept her award at the glamorous ceremony.

“This is such a huge milestone for myself and my business. To be a part of something like Connect2Mums with like minded mums in business is very inspirational,” Ms Golikidis said.

“All that hard work and trying to spend time with our kids all pays off. I’m very excited and honoured to win this award and I hope I do Connect2Mums proud in the next year,” the excited winner said.

Michelle Pamper Boxes Michelle Anderson is a 41 year old wife and mother of 3 boys. In 2008/09, after being an ambulance officer for 20 years, Michelle suffered from emotional and physical burnout – major depression, post traumatic stress disorder and back surgery. This combination landed her in hospital for an extended period of time. But something great came out of that hospitalisation – PamperBoxes.

PamperBoxes is an online store and was launched this year. A PamperBox is a collection of gifts beautifully presented in designer gift packaging – luxurious gifts selected from a range of chocolates,

nuts, aromatherapy candles, journals, stationery, relaxation CDs, inspirational gifts and bath and body products. PamperBoxes are suitable for women, men and couples. www.pamperboxes.com.au

Kirsten Gray, is mum to 2 beautiful daughters and a Naturopath specialising in fertility and paediatric health.

With the birth of her second daughter she came across a kit with recipe book & instructions that enables mothers to puree their own home made fruit and veg... She LOVED the idea and the practicality of the kit and was immediately interested as it fit both her professional and personal ethos of organics and home made food for bubs. She is now the exclusive Distributor for the Mumi & Bubi Solids Starter Kit!

“With a 9 month old at home I use the kit personally every day so know that it works. It’s also BPA free (environmentally safe plastic) which I love.

I love the fact that I can work from home and set my own hours around sleep times and school runs... It enables me to be here for my kids and also keep my professional career going. It is very busy at times but it’s all worth it!” says Kirsten. www.mumiandbubi.com.au

Prior to having children, I had a regular meditation practice of up to an hour a day. I looked forward to this time in my day and was well aware of the amazing benefits meditation had to offer. I probably started my practice around 10 years ago when I attended dialogues between the Dalai Lama and world leading neuroscientists. Science and religion came together to investigate the mind and how some of these ancient practices had a role in the modern study of the brain. After many studies and MRIs of monks, science concluded that meditation boosted the happiness set point we are all born with, it improved our immune system and various other health indicators and it caused activity in an area in the brain (the left pre frontal cortex) where our feelings of happiness are generated. That was enough evidence for me to start a habit! But as we all know, no matter how important we believe it to be, after having children it is very difficult to find an hour in your day for yourself let alone an hour that needed silence and no interruptions!! Impossible with two toddlers! So I made the mistake of giving it up altogether. You know that mindset “if I cant do it perfectly I won’t do it at all.” I am happy to now report that finding one minute in your day is totally achievable and you will not believe how much of a difference one minute can make. I made a conscious effort to wake up earlier than the children usually do and I spent one minute (still lying in bed) and meditating. I started on Monday and by Friday I was meditating for 5 minutes. Breaking meditation down to simple terms, it’s about becoming still and connecting your mind to a single point of focus. It could be one of your senses, your breath, a candle or a mantra. I simply connected my mind to my breathing and instantly my breaths became longer. Thoughts still arose in my mind but I just let them pass by and came back to focusing on my breath. The biggest impact I found was that the daily “morning routine” tended to flow more smoothly each day. It can be chaos at our house in the mornings with the kids leaping out of bed with all this energy and many demands. Once I started meditating each morning I found that I reacted to them with a sense of calm and this helped the morning to unfold in a more peaceful way.

Being a mother is a demanding job but focusing on your own happiness helps everyone to have a better day, so give it a go, you’ll be glad you did!

ith one in five children, including babies, suffering from eczema, and dry skin the most common trigger in an outbreak, finding an easy and cost effective therapy you can implement into your baby’s daily skin

care will work wonders for you both. And there is nothing better than massage for babies who suffer from eczema. More and more new mums and dads are experiencing the wonderful pleasures massage can bring, not only in terms of relief, but the total sense of relaxation and look of pure happiness on their baby’s face. Science SaysResearcher, Dr Tiffany Field, Ph.D., from the Touch Research Institute in Miami, who has spent the past twenty five years researching massage therapy, conducted a study on young children with eczema who received daily massage from their parents, to see whether their symptoms decreased. For one month, the parents of the first group massaged their children’s prescribed skin treatments into their skin for 20 minutes each day. The second group applied the skin treatment to their children’s skin with no massage. The study found that the children from the first group who received the daily massage were less anxious and that the symptoms of redness, scaling, itching, thickening and skin abrasions had decreased significantly. The parents also reported feeling calmer themselves after giving the massage. The second group had decrease in the scaling of the skin but there were no other improvements seen. Other research has found that baby massage also strengthens the baby’s immune system, helps the baby sleep longer and deeper, develops coordination, relieves wind, colic, reflux and constipation, promotes weight gain in premature babies and can be therapeutic for mums suffering post natal depression. Massage and your babyWhile massage in the study was conducted for 20 minutes, this may be overly stimulating, so watch for cues as to when your baby has had enough. Indications may be crying, pushing your hands away, turning away or facial grimacing. It’s also important to only massage skin that is not broken and avoid massaging areas that are weeping, bleeding or have open sores. Only use downward strokes, so from hip to ankle, upper back to lower back and shoulder to wrist as the hair follicles grow in this direction and as baby already has dry, inflamed skin massaging against the hair growth may cause infection and be uncomfortable.

w “

” Skin SenseWhen massaging your baby, use either natural, organic cold pressed plant oil such as Sweet Almond, Apricot Kernel or Sesame Oil, as these oils are rich in vitamins and minerals and may assist with the healing of skin irritations. Another good option is an emollient moisturising cream that has no fragrance or essential oils, and is suitable for sensitive, eczema prone skin. UK based paediatric research has found that massaging with Sunflower oil has shown significant results in repairing baby’s skin barrier. With so many products on the market you may need to try a few until you find the product most suitable to your needs. So take time out each day for baby massage – it’s precious time for you both and will result in a happier, healthier and more content baby.
