DANTE co-founder, Dai Davies andSURFnet CTO Erik Huizer have joinedthe elite ranks of notable individuals whohave been inducted into the Internet Hallof Fame.

Both Dai and Erik were namedGlobal Connectors, a category whichrecognises and celebrates individualsfrom around the world who have mademajor contributions to the growth,connectivity, and use of the internet,either on a global scale or within aspecific region or community.Dai was responsible for the originaldevelopment of the pan-Europeanresearch internet from 1991, which hasgrown beyond recognition to become

Alongside them, speaker inviteeDomenico Vicinanza, Network ServicesProduct Manager at GÉANT, explainedthe value of high-speed networks toscientific discovery, and played the‘Sounds of Space’, a musical duetbased on NASA Voyager spacecraftdata, created using data sonificationtechniques reliant on the GÉANTnetwork. Its members areresponsible for an illustriousseries of famous firsts: first to theNorth Pole, first to the SouthPole, first to the summit ofMount Everest, first to thedeepest point in the ocean, andeven the first humans to land onthe Moon, among other feats ofperseverance and courage.

The speech and music werestreamed live during the event, whichincluded a video from Stephen Hawking,the world’s most brilliant theoreticalphysicist, as the events keynotespeaker.

eduGAIN is the GÉANTinterfederation service simplifyingaccess to content, services andresources for the global researchand education community. It aims to enable the trustworthyexchange of information relatedto identity, authentication andauthorisation between identityfederations.

eduGAIN has facilitated federatedaccess to the GÉANT project intranet,meaning 300 participants and parts ofthe wider community can now accessusing their home identities’. This is agood example of how eduGAIN canhelp with federated access.The GÉANT community can log into theGÉANT intranet using their federatedidentity, which means one simple set ofcredentials and improved security. Having single sign-on (SSO) not onlyenhances the user experience butstreamlines management from the ITside – making it a much more efficient,convenient solution for everyoneinvolved in the project. It is hoped thiswill encourage more users to activelycollaborate using this accessibleplatform.

Anand Patil, CIO of DANTE andsponsor of the integration project said:

“The community has been asking for‘eduGAINising’ the GÉANT Intranet forsome time now and it has been aEuropean Commission recommendationthat all GÉANT services becomefederated. Finally, this dream is now areality. It not only benefits the users interms of Single Sign-On but alsoreduces the GÉANT IT overheads tomanage user accounts. We are planningto federate more GÉANT services in thenear future.”

Copernicus is the EU’s Earthobservation programme and will be theworld’s biggest ever effort tocharacterise our planet. Once all thesatellites have been launched, it willproduce around eight terabytes of dataevery day, as it details the state ofEarth’s land surface, atmosphere and oceans.

GÉANT is now working on a trialwith Copernicus to ensure the data isaccessible to the worldwide researchand education community, with fullproduction planned for the end of the year.

Via a connection of the gateway tothe COPERNICUS data in Frankfurt toDFN PoP (the German NationalResearch and Education Network)which in turn connects to GÉANT,

researchers all over the world will gainaccess to the Copernicus data sets withunrivalled bandwidth and networkperformance.

These data sets will be generatedfrom applications such as monitoringsea ice zones and the Arcticenvironment; surveillance of oil spills andship detection; mapping forest, waterand sustainable agriculture; supportinghumanitarian aid in crisis situations andclimate monitoring.

Open dissemination of Copernicusinformation will help citizens, researchersand policy makers to integrate anenvironmental dimension into theirdecision-making procedures, multiplyingthe benefits for society today and tomorrow.

As well as supporting the spaceindustry itself, the programme is likely toimpact other economic sectors such astransport, oil and gas, insurance andagriculture. Studies show that it is likelyto generate around €30 billion andcreate up to 50,000 jobs in Europe by 2030.

In the future, GÉANT and theEuropean Space Agency (ESA), which is developing the space observationstructure, will cooperate on integration witheduGAIN. This will enable federatedidentity management to manage andimprove access to the data, making iteven easier for people to use the information.

Observing the atmosphere,ocean and land surfacesis becoming ever moreimportant for decision-making at domestic andinternational level, and thedata generated by earthobservation projects thatenables this decision-making is rapidlyincreasing. GÉANTresponded to EUMETSATneeds to support thedistribution of this data.

EUMETSAT (the EuropeanOrganisation for the Exploitation ofMeteorological Satellites) is a globaloperational satellite agency at the heartof Europe. Its purpose is to gatheraccurate and reliable satellite data onweather, climate and the environment24 hours a day, 365 days a year and todeliver that data to NationalMeteorological Services of EUMETSATMember and Cooperating States inEurope, to international partners, andto users world-wide.

IINNCCRREEAASSIINNGGLLYY VVIITTAALLTTOO SSOOCCIIEETTYY Weather forecasting has become evermore important, helping society todetect, prepare and deal with extremeweather. EUMETSAT data supportsdecision-making at all levels of society,and is critical to governments, air travelsafety, shipping and road traffic, as wellas to areas such as farming,construction and other industries.

Furthermore, satellite observationsare highly relevant to climatemonitoring and together with otherorganisations such as Copernicus arehelping to address this globalchallenge.

EUMETSAT also cooperatesclosely with the NationalOceanographic and AtmosphericAdministration (NOAA) in the USA, andis working towards close cooperationwith satellite operators of China, India,Japan, Korea and Russia to coordinatemissions, exchange data andexpertise, and facilitate distribution ofEUMETSAT data worldwide.

PPAARRTT OOFF GGLLOOBBAALLEEAARRTTHH OOBBSSEERRVVAATTIIOONN EUMETCast is EUMETSAT’s primarydissemination mechanism for the nearreal-time delivery of satellite data andproducts. Established in 2004, itenables data to be distributed tomultiple partners or groups of partnersat once. With over 4000 registeredreception stations, it is highly scalableand is based on standard Digital VideoBroadcast technology, usingcommercial telecommunicationgeostationary satellites to multi-castfiles to a wide user community.

Furthermore, EUMETCast isEUMETSAT’s contribution toGEONETCast – a global network ofsatellite-based data disseminationsystems providing environmental datato a worldwide user community.GEONETCast is a milestone in theGlobal Earth Observation System ofSystems (GEOSS), coordinated by theintergovernmental Group on EarthObservation (GEO), and aims tostrengthen international cooperation onglobal earth observation.

Due to the increasingly vital natureof this data transmission, EUMETSATutilises terrestrial Wide Area Network(WAN) links for data acquisition fromEUMETSAT ground stations and theexchange of data with worldwidedistributed bi-lateral partners. GÉANTand Europe’s NRENs arecomplementing this connectivity.

CONNECT spoke with MariaMinaricova of GÉANT’s pan-Europeanuser liaison team, to learn more aboutthis exciting development.

WWHHAATT WWIILLLL GGÉÉAANNTTPPRROOVVIIDDEE TTOOEEUUMMEETTSSAATT?? GÉANT will provide a flexible andscalable service that will facilitate asingle point of contact interface for thenetwork setup and monitoring, as wellas support connectivity test andvalidation activities across the GÉANTand NREN networks for the distributionof EUMETSAT’s terrestrial multicastdata dissemination to EUMETSATMember States and partners. Theservice will start with initial capabilitiesin a core network but offers a numberof options to allow expansion of thecurrent setup geographically and toprovide additional monitoringcapabilities.

DANTE will act as the serviceprovider to EUMETSAT for all networkrelated aspects and will coordinatesuch across national domains toachieve the contractual agreed serviceobjectives, namely the enabling ofmulticast capabilities between theEUMETSAT HQ interface to DFN (theGerman NREN) and the Site AccessPoints of each NREN participating inthe project; network service monitoringand reporting; network operations andservice management as well as testand validation support. In addition,DANTE will support EUMETSAT toenable multicast network connectivityto the Korean Meteorological Agency inSouth Korea, and the NationalOceanographic and AtmosphericAgency (NOAA) in the USA.

WWHHYY DDIIDD EEUUMMEETTSSAATTSSEELLEECCTT GGÉÉAANNTT,, AANNDDWWHHAATT DDOO TTHHEEYY SSEEEE AASSTTHHEE KKEEYY BBEENNEEFFIITTSS?? EUMETSAT and GÉANT both haveextensive expertise in working withlarge and distributed user communitiesand of delivering world-class servicesto their respective constituencies. Byresponding to EUMETSAT needs theGÉANT community, strategy, expertise,experience and local knowledge canbe shared to support and furtherdevelop the delivery of GÉANT networkservices. By engaging with DANTE,EUMETSAT will benefit fromestablished links through the GÉANTnetwork to the European NRENinfrastructures that connect majorscience experiments distributed acrossEurope. This will allow EUMETSAT tocapitalise on such existing Europeaninfrastructure and service areas in acost efficient way.

Moreover, GÉANT’s establishedposition as a long-term pan-Europeaninfrastructure and an integral part ofthe EU’s research strategy is an idealpartner for an organization seekinglong-term stability.

WWHHAATT IISS TTHHEETTIIMMEELLIINNEE?? The project implementation phasestarted on 22 April and the initialservice provision will start in January2015 and continue for a period of twoyears. However pending futureassessment EUMETSAT plans toconsider longer term contractualarrangements.

EEDDUUGGAAIINN AANNDDEEDDUURROOAAMMTGÉANT provides the essential highbandwidth needed to run complexcalculations and move results setsaround. We have also integrated oursecurity with eduGAIN. Our system isnow compatible with federation ofidentity providers so all users canconnect and authenticate into theplatform using their eduroamcredentials. They still have to apply foraccessing data, but this now opens themarket to new users by making it easierfor people to connect to the solution.

eduroam is basically making ourusers life much simpler because wedon’t have to handle the complexity ofdigital identities. At the user end all theyhave to do is use their regular eduroamcredentials. It’s a win-win situation.

This is important because our goal isnot only to develop a research platformbut a production environment - a realapplication. We are developing twomajor accesses and environments in this respect.

One is dedicated to research, theplace where we collect real data onpatients enrolled in the four diseasestudies. The other is a productionenvironment, so a subset of applicationswill be made available over a muchlarger dataset. By negotiating withhospitals on a case by case basis, wealready have more than 50k patientsdocumented in the system.

This will make brand new researchapplications available very quickly tophysicians, clinical researchers and PhDstudents –anyone interested (andauthorised) in accessing this type ofdata and applications for curiosity and research.

If there were any specific clinicalconditions, you can get in touch with the physician in charge. Exchangeknowledge with other healthprofessionals involved. You can checkhow they recovered.

If you’re a researcher you can lookfor patterns of clinical conditionsdescribing particular pathologies.Source data is integrated, semanticallyenriched and made compatible andunderstandable.

The only drawback is that healthcareprofessionals are not allowed to makeany decision for treating the patientbased solely on this. However, they canuse this it as an additional source ofinformation, in the same way forinstance they would use google…

HHOOWW WWIILLLL TTHHEEYY DDOOTTHHIISS??Similarity research allows you to searchfor patients like “mine”. You can look forspecific patterns using cluster-basedsimilarity searches. Or you could usethe knowledge discovery interface toinvestigate by statistics any such pattersfrom the data. Potentially you couldeventually discover new patterns ofclinical conditions.

WWHHAATT OOTTHHEERR BBEENNEEFFIITTSSCCAANN WWEE EEXXPPEECCTT??In cardiomyopathy you could open theMRI scan of a patient’s heart and applymodels segmenting the chambers of theheart and obtain in a few seconds a fullanatomy and physical references of theheart to simulate its function. From thisyou can extract meaningfulmeasurements that are precious as towhen to operate.

Thanks to these new models we areable to non-invasively support decisionmaking. We will no longer need topractically validate models oncomparable organisms like animals.

YYOOUU WWOONN AANN AAWWAARRDDRREECCEENNTTLLYY??Yes, we were thrilled to be selected asone of 200 exhibitors at ICT2013.Competition is always fierce – every yearthey receive around 1500 applications –not just from e-health, but all scientificfields: from satellite communications todriverless cars. So you can imaginehow we felt when we won ‘Best ExhibitAward’ overall. It was a greatopportunity to raise our visibility.

MD-Paedgree, a four-year EuropeanCommission funded ICT project to helpfight childhood obesity-relatedcardiovascular and other child diseases.

HHOOWW DDIIDD TTHHEE PPRROOJJEECCTTCCOOMMEE AABBOOUUTT??MD-Paedgree capitalises on several ECprojects, in particular Health-e-Child andSim-e-Child. Both were very successfulnot only in demonstrating the visibility ofthe infrastructure but also in pioneeringthe concepts and business models weare building on today.

After a one and a half year break,we were mandated by the hospital chainOspedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù inItaly to set up a big data infrastructurebackbone to do translational research.This enabled us to set up the firstprototype, accessing and experimentingwith the health information systemswithin these hospitals.

We were then able to go to the ECwith the proposal for MD, much moreambitious in scope, opening up to sevenhospitals Europe-wide andinternationally (one in the US). Today wehave 22 partners and 7 hospitalstargeting 4 disease areas, and we areaiming at expanding it to others.

WWHHAATT CCAANN TTHHEEIINNFFRRAASSTTRRUUCCTTUURREE DDOO??We can develop a full model of the heartnot just anatomically but physiologically.We provide tools to simulate heartconditions, better understand diseaseevolution and eventually make decisionson treatments and operations.

Expanding the scope to juvenilearthritis – we can model bones and theimpact of treatments. We’re also aimingto develop a musculoskeletal patientspecific model to aid new developmentsfor neurological disorders.

HHOOWW IISS GGÉÉAANNTTIINNVVOOLLVVEEDD??Firstly, with Health-e-Child weencouraged participating hospitals toobtain a GÉANT connection. Ourstrategy involves installing big datanodes within the hospital premises, sothat the data stays local.

This node has one foot in the mainfirewall and one foot outside. Inside isconnected to the health informationsystem with a connector doing the dataextraction. Once this is done the data isuploaded to the other side outside thefirewall where it becomes part of the bigdata federation, so all users connectingto MD can interact with the data beingshared by the participating hospitals

Collaboration with research teams allows GÉANT and theNRENs to partner with the community to foster innovation in awide range of fields from services supporting Big Dataapplications to extremely low latency transmission for theperforming arts, to clean-slate designs for the next generationof networks which revisit the most fundamental assumptionson network architectures such as TCP/IP.

The GÉANT project has long been at the forefront of research andinnovation in the fields of networking and networked services, servingthe most technically aware users and meeting the most demandingrequirements for connectivity and collaboration services.

This complex universe of trust and identity managementis evolving rapidly around several core concepts: how canindividuals have more control in managing their identity?How can identities be made more secure? How can weoptimise the process of identity verification, to enhanceaccess and usability of services whilst maintaining a highlevel of security? These questions are addressed by threeprojects in this family:

NNEETTWWOORRKK AARRCCHHIITTEECCTTUURREEAANNDD OOPPTTIICCAALL PPRROOJJEECCTTSSThe challenges faced by the network from the Data Delugeare huge and potentially incredibly disruptive. The volume ofdata being generated in the latest research projects is manyorders of magnitude greater than even 5 years ago. Existingnetwork paradigms may not be able to cope with theanticipated changes to data transfer. Looking forwardtowards future generations of networking technologies,these projects study future networking systems in order tohelp NRENs understand the issues and plan solutions.

The world-class GÉANT network is the ideal environmentfor testing and building the future internet, starting with thehardware itself (fibre and routing/switching equipment) andthe basic network architecture. Its dark fibre testbedprovides record-shattering speeds in the order of Terabitsper second over five long haul routes throughout Europe.

Three projects are working directly with the fibrecapabilities, both for scientific purposes and in the context ofthe evolution of optical transmissions, from increasingspectral efficiency on single superchannels, to exploring newwavelengths (e.g. Alien Wavelengths) that allow operators tointroduce new features and technology on the existingoptical transport infrastructure

•• IICCOOFF:: IInntteerrnnaattiioonnaall CClloocckk CCoommppaarriissoonnss vviiaa OOppttiiccaall FFiibbeerra high profile scientific project performing a state-of-the-art atomic clock comparison using GÉANT long haul dark fibre

SSDDNN -- SSOOFFTTWWAARREE DDEEFFIINNEEDDNNEETTWWOORRKKIINNGGCurrent networking technologies are based on systemsoriginally designed over 40 years ago. These systems rely onhardware elements (routers and switches) with built-infirmware that sets the rules on how internet traffic behaves,thus inherently limiting the possible data flows over thenetwork. Over time, these limitations have proven to be notmerely of academic interest, but also of practical concern,and increasingly crippling for the system going forward. Theproblem is overcome by decoupling the control operationsfrom the data flow, allowing the former to be performeddynamically by specialised software – hence the emergenceof Software-Defined Networking (SDN). This approach allowsgreater network flexibility and the potential for newnetworking paradigms to meet new demands.

GÉANT has been at the forefront of this research andhas built one of the largest SDN testbeds in the world. Thistestbed includes an OpenFlow facility, which has proven ofgreat interest to experts and innovators in the community.The projects in this area have a variety of objectives, fromtrialing “real life” SDN implementations in a simulatedproduction environment, to investigating the use of emergingtechnologies such as autonomic networking and networkcoding in an SDN-enabled environment, to enhancing thefacility itself by enabling multidomain OpenFlow, todeveloping a service that enables scientists to dynamicallycreate their own private and secure virtual networks.

The explosive growth of genomic data is generatingquestions as to whether it makes sense to move largevolumes of data when it needs to be processed, or if itwouldn’t be better to take the processing to the data. “Thisis indeed our perspective,” says Gianluca Reali, coordinatorof the ARES project; “we are working on optimisationalgorithms that use virtualisation to move data and/orprocessing depending on what is most convenient.”

What is “most convenient” depends on multiple factors,ranging from technical to scientific, to clinical. Manyparameters are fed in by the scientific partner GGB, while thealgorithms are developed by the coordinating partner, theUniversity of Perugia.

These work on top of NetServ, a middleware developedwith Columbia University, which can dynamically instantiateservices in the network. This is integrated with OpenStack toprovide a user-friendly cloud interface.

The key element however is the signaling technology.“The NetServ-based back end uses NSIS signaling, and thebulk of our development is currently on this,” continues Reali“the off-path signaling which searches the network forresources in the vicinity of PoPs that are traversed. Thecloud is not sufficient, behind the cloud there must be anengine that can optimize these resources and reduce service time.”

Increasingly, education and research activities take place atlocations where Wi-Fi is not available, outside institutionalbuildings and off campus. The MEAL project aims to bringthe ease of eduroam access to these locations by extendingthe service to work over LTE.

LTE is seen as the key technology to realize publicmobile communication networks. The two NRENs thatcollaborate on the MEAL project, SURFnet and Janet, bothhave individually explored the possibilities to offload the LTEdata to their network. The technology however has not yetbeen implemented for international roaming. MEAL intendsto fill this gap.

In the context of MEAL, this means that devices that gainaccess to the Janet network through LTE in the UK will alsogain access via LTE in the Netherlands (and vice versa). Thechallenge is integrating the LTE and Wi-Fi protocols to offer aseamless service anywhere, anytime, and via any device.

“We have already tested it within the netherlands ,” saysproject coordinator Frans Panken, “now we can also try touse it abroad within an international context, using thenetwork of GÉANT to interconnect the networks of Janetand SURFnet, and to make it all work.”

In March of this year, the team of researchers from theREACTION project presented their work at the 2014 OFCConference in San Francisco.

The REACTION partners are a mix of public and private:the Italian research center CNIT, the Universitat Politècnicade Catalunya and the Spanish Telefónica. They share abroader collaboration in the EU IDEALIST project, whichbrings together major european telecoms and publicresearch labs to study elastic optical network technologies.Some key issues emerging from this work are taken up byREACTION, in particular a new transponder technology thatenables so-called “sliceability” in optical networks.

At OFC the team presented not only their current workon sliceability, but also a special post-deadline paperdescribing an experiment on network re-optimization basedon the innovative ABNO architecture. Both presentationswere extremely well received, which bodes well for theindustrial take-up of their solutions:

“For UPC and CNIT this is an important step in anongoing research process,” says Filippo Cugini, coordinatorof the project “but for Telefonica, the aim is to standardisethese solutions and propose a new standard to IETF, which would require vendors to provide support for it in their products.”

Network coding (NC) is a technology that promises to morethan double network capacities while increasing reliabilityand security. Although NC was originally designed fortransport networks, an implementation at this layer is not yet available.

The MINERVA project is working to fill this gap andimplement robust network coding methods in the GÉANTOpenFlow facility: “We are seeking methods that arebandwidth-efficient, easy to implement, and scalable; easyto maintain protection methods which could be implementedin practice;” says project coordinator Peter Babarczi, “wehave been working on this topic from a theoretical point of

view for years, but this is the first time we can implement it in a real, large scale network.”

The MINERVA partners, MTA-BME Future Internetresearch group and the i2cat Foundation, are both wellknown for their work in this area, with numerous IEEEpublications and several prestigious awards to their name.They already have a successful NC implementation that wasdemonstrated at the latest Sigcomm.

MINERVA is implementing a proof-of-concept for thepractical applicability of network coding in SDNs in the keyareas of video streaming and distributed storage.

Over the past years, many NRENs have successfully builtnational federations by deploying authentication andauthorisation infrastructures (AAI). GÉANT designed,developed and launched eduGAIN to support crossborder use cases and as more and more federationsbecome members of eduGAIN, the foundation fordelivering federated identity is solid.

In the current GÉANT project (GN3plus), the AAI providersof eduGAIN and the scientific communities of FIM4R(Federated Identity Management for Research) haveteamed up to deliver a series of pilots that address some of their challenges. CONNECT spoke with ELIXIR (the European Life Science Infrastructure for BiologicalInformation), on one of its Pilot Actions between theEuropean Genome-phenome Archive and CSC, to understand more about their challenges and how they are being addressed.

be protected at least for a certain timefor ethical, legal, societal or businessreasons. In these cases the data serviceproviders who host, distribute and sharethat data have to create an accesscontrol mechanism. In the case ofELIXIR, the plan is this is made with thebodies who have the authority to grantaccess based on e.g. application ofacceptance of terms of use. Typicallythese are the original data creators likeleaders of EU framework projects orbiobank sample cohorts. We havedecided to rely on the existing Europeannetwork of trust, eduGAIN, to firstelectronically identify researchers whoseek an access-controlled dataset fortheir work. Once the proper level ofassurance on the identity has beenachieved, the so-called data-accesscommittees can process the requestsbased on the rules that apply to theprotected data using tools providedfrom ELIXIR.

HHOOWW WWOOUULLDD YYOOUU LLIIKKEE TTOO SSEEEE EEDDUUGGAAIINNDDEEVVEELLOOPP IINN FFUUTTUURREE??I think the eduGAIN and GÉANTenabling user actions have beeninstrumental in getting forward togetherto work on life sciences datainfrastructure challenges. Especially foropen but sensitive data we must offer alevel of security to ensure that usershaving access to data are recognisedresearchers. Scientific communitiesstand at different starting points in theimplementation of the federated identitymanagement technologies. Proactivityfrom the eduGAIN provider tounderstand the needs of the life sciencecommunity is highly desirable, and viceversa; the life science community needsto learn what to expect to be deliveredby eduGAIN.

WWHHAATT IISS EELLIIXXIIRR?? CCAANNYYOOUU TTEELLLL UUSS AA LLIITTTTLLEEAABBOOUUTT YYOOUURRUUSSEERRSS//SSEERRVVIICCEESS??ELIXIR is a distributed researchinfrastructure, where leadingorganisations from 17 Europeancountries and EMBL (EuropeanMolecular Biology Laboratory) havejoined forces to tackle the challenge ofdata volumes created by modern lifescience research. In Finland, our nodehosted at CSC - IT Center for Science isworking with local organisations that do,for example, molecular level studies ofcancer, genetic diagnosis of dogs andhorses, and basic research of resolvingthe birch tree genome. The amount ofdata produced by research of this typeis one challenge, but it is alsodemanding of expertise. The createddata has to be annotated and structuredaccording to international standards,and shared collectively with othercountries.

WWHHAATT AARREE TTHHEE MMAAIINNCCHHAALLLLEENNGGEESS FFAACCEEDD BBYYEELLIIXXIIRR IINN MMAAKKIINNGG YYOOUURRSSEERRVVIICCEESS AAVVAAIILLAABBLLEEOONN AA PPAANN--EEUURROOPPEEAANNBBAASSIISS??When you think of the examples above,it is clear that life science ecosystem isglobal. No country can manage inisolation. The application of genetics inhealthcare is emerging at an acceleratedspeed as the public starts to understandthe possibilities from examples (e.g. 23and me) and applications that emergefrom services targeted to animals(e.g. wwwwww..ggeennoossccooppeerr..ccoomm). There areexamples of rare diseases caused bygenetic variation that must be put to thelarger reference data context before theyare properly diagnosed. The doctorsseek to diagnose the root of thediseases, and they will be able tooptimise treatments when provided withmolecular level data.

Now, this is a real challenge.

How do we make data available on-linefor research to create services that pullintelligence for those who need it whenthey need it? Once a service has beencreated relying of the data, how do wekeep the whole distributed infrastructuretogether so that critical operators likehealthcare could build on it? Thesetypes of challenges outline what ELIXIRnodes like EMBL-EBI and CSC need tomake happen in ELIXIR in collaborationwith the European e-Infrastructure.

HHOOWW AARREE YYOOUU AANNDDGGÉÉAANNTT WWOORRKKIINNGGTTOOGGEETTHHEERR TTOOOOVVEERRCCOOMMEE TTHHEESSEE??Research data volumes have to moveseamlessly around the continent. Thereference data of human geneticvariation alone is hundreds of terabytes.The created and published data needsto be shared and catered back toresearch effectively. On top of thatELIXIR provides data sets describingother animals, insects, plants, bacteria,viruses and all other life forms of theplanet. Volumes more than double everyyear. This is where GÉANT and nationalresearch and education networkproviders play a key infrastructure role.The goal is that on-line processing ofbiological data is brought near theresearchers where they need and whenthey need it. This way, we are eventuallyable to create biotechnologyapplications. When discovery of existingresearch data stored in ELIXIR datacenters are made easier, so savings arealso possible as duplication of basicresearch reduces.

Throughout the R&E community the use of cloud services israpidly increasing, due to the twin benefits of cost efficiencyand scalability. Theseservices can typically be supported by the high performance IPnetworks provided by Campus and NREN systems without theneed for enhanced Quality of Service (QoS) facilities.

However as cloud usage develops and starts to offerhigher order services (such as HPC and Big Dataapplications) the need will grow for dedicated cloud servicesdelivery infrastructure to support these more demandingapplications. This is where Open Cloud eXchange (OCX)comes in. The concept has been designed to support thisneed for enhanced connectivity and QoS.

As some of the key benefits of Cloud Services are rapiddeployment and user self-provisioning, so the ability for OCXto work alongside Single Sign On (SSO) and Authenticationand Authorisation Infrastructure (AAI) services toautomatically identify network requirements and provisionthese would be a major benefit.

HHOOWW OOCCXX WWIILLLL OOPPEERRAATTEEgOCX (GÉANT Open Cloud eXchange) is designed toenable layer 0 to layer 2 interconnectivity between the CloudService Provider (CSP) and the end user, working with aTrusted Third Party (TTP) to facilitate interoperation.

Initially, during the demonstration phases, provisioning would be manual but the use of SSO and SDN facilities toautomate provisioning will be considered throughout thedesign process.

Together with my team, it’s my job toraise the profile of the GÉANT network,services and innovation, in order todemonstrate their value to ourstakeholder groups and so support theproject’s objectives.

Over the past few years, as theservices became an important part ofthe project, I have been evolving aproduct marketing and promotionfunction to support service teams withuser-focus in service development, andto communicate the service benefits toNRENs, and assist them with channelpromotion – the onward promotion tousers at national level.

WWHHEERREE DDOO YYOOUU FFEEEELL TTHHIISSHHAASS HHAADD TTHHEE BBIIGGGGEESSTTIIMMPPAACCTT OOVVEERR TTHHEE PPAASSTTYYEEAARR??Every year the focus shifts slightly andwe expand our remit, and the rewardsare worth it. For example, the jointcommunications programme withInfinera to promote GÉANT’s 500Gbpsnetwork upgrade won GÉANT twoindustry awards and a Guinness worldrecord!

As always we work closely withindustry titles such as Light Reading andScientific Computing World whoregularly seek our expert opinion. But itis our investment in developing pressrelations and social media that has reallystarted to pay dividends. We now have

over 1,100 Twitter followers providing aconstant stream of new contacts andopportunities to engage withstakeholders. For instance, with highprofile journalists, with whom ourgrowing relationships have resulted inunprecedented coverage in the nationalpress, such as the BBC, The Guardian,The Huffington Post and some of theworld’s biggest technology outlets suchas GigaOm and Wired – all of which helpus raise the profile of the project farbeyond the industry press.

• Working with international colleagues, we are developing an interactive global map showing GÉANT and other regional networkssuch as CAREN, RedCLARA, TEIN and so on, and with a drill-down function to show NREN details too.

• The TNC issue of CONNECT magazine is being put to bed (which you are now reading)

• The team is starting work on an AAI communications plan in keeping with the aims of the recently published and agreed AAI strategy

• The NREN GÉANT PR Dissemination survey results shows that over 70% of European NREN partners use the materials, news and web content that my team develops – this is a great indication that we’re doing the right things here. Getting feedback and measures of our work is always so valuable to obtain.

eduroam, eduGAIN and perfSONARhave a user base beyond Europe.This means that I need to ensure thatproject communications and productpromotion planning incorporates theinternational aspects and opportunities. I have also become involved in the newlyestablished Global PR Network, a groupof communications professionals fromacross the global R&E networkingcommunity, which has amongst its aimsto share best practise and to workcollaboratively on joint-interest projects,such as case study examples anddeveloping a boilerplate clarifying thecollaboration, for use by all NRENs.

HHOOWW DDOOEESS MMAARRKKEETTIINNGGCCOOMMMMUUNNIICCAATTIIOONNSS IINNRREESSEEAARRCCHH NNEETTWWOORRKKIINNGGCCOOMMPPAARREE TTOO OOTTHHEERRIINNDDUUSSTTRRIIEESS??I’ve been involved with networkingtechnology since the early days ofcommercial Internet - PIPEX, UUNET,software distributor Unipalm, digital TVclient developer ANT plc – in marketingcommunications, PR, eventmanagement, channel marketing andproduct management. The work followsthe same principles whichever industryor setting you are in. So, with marketingcommunications, the aim is always tobring about some change in behaviour,or even a thought process. Such as toinfluence a purchasing decision – orservice usage decision in our case, or todemonstrate value for money to afunding body or investor. So, whether forprofit or not for profit, we still need toreach out to different audiences fordifferent reasons, all in support of thecorporate objectives.

WWHHAATT DDOO YYOOUU EENNJJOOYYMMOOSSTT AABBOOUUTT YYOOUURRWWOORRKK?? It’s a cliché but the fact that I’mconstantly learning and thateveryone in the company makes a real difference.

LLIIBBRRAARRIIEESSFunet, the Finnish NREN has plans todeploy eduroam in libraries - the TurkuCity Library is already connected - andother central locations throughout Turku.

Turku universities have been verypositive in furthering the footprint ofeduroam, with suggestions for making itavailable for staff and students within thecity. This will help with organising eventsfor instance, since with eduroam there isno need to arrange any other WLAN.

New locations are listed oneduroam.org location map and on theeduroam Companion mobile app, whichhelp universities to raise awareness ofeduroam within their locality.

LLEEIISSUURREE CCEENNTTRREESS AANNDD PPAARRKKSSIn Austria, ACOnet has started another"eduroam in the city" initiative, currentlyworking with the city administrations ofWien (Vienna) and Innsbruck.

While eduroam is already available atmost universities in Austria and someother participating organisations like theNatural History Museum, this newinitiative intends to extend the eduroamcoverage outside campuses, usingpublic WLAN infrastructure, to leisureareas, shopping streets, tourismhotspots and parks.

Theprinciple is the same as that ofeduroam except end users arepublic services and governmentalstaff. When an employee from afederal government institution visitsa local administration, they caneasily surf their wireless networkusing the same credentials as attheir home institution.

Each visited institution can alsodecide which access rightsgovroam users get on theirnetwork. Finally, administrationsconnected to the Belnet network donot have to pay additional costs forthe implementation of govroam.

Belnet is keen to increase the number of public sectororganisations and is activelypromoting the many benefits. The service has now been rolled outin the Netherlands, in collaborationwith SURFnet, the Dutch NREN.

RRAAIILLWWAAYY SSTTAATTIIOONNSS AANNDD RREESSTTAAUURRAANNTTSSSUNET, the Swedish NREN and Wi-Fiprovider (The Cloud) have an agreementgiving researchers, students and staff atSweden’s universities access to asecure internet connection on theCloud’s 4,500 or so access pointsincluding airports, railway stations andeven restaurants.

The SUNET – Cloud partnershiprepresents an innovative approach ineduroam and is a big step forward, as itmakes connectivity easier and providesusers with secure mobile access to aglobal wireless network both at theirhome institution and in public places.

AAIIRRPPOORRTTSSIn Norway, UNINETT the NorwegianNREN provides free Wi-Fi access tostudents and researchers at 14Norwegian airports across the country,from Kristiansand in the south, toSvalbard in the far north – with more to

follow. eduroam is also available in mostof central Trondheim (Norway’s secondlargest campus city) through acollaboration with the municipality and the university.

TTOOUURRIISSTTSS AANNDDSSCCHHOOOOLLCCHHIILLDDRREENNCARNet the Croatian NREN offersresearch and education users on theislands Unije, Susak and Dugi Otok inthe north of the Adriatic free-wiredinternet if they have an eduroam login.Serving tourists is a pleasant side effectas the network was originally establishedfor schoolchildren on the islands.

Similarly, tourists also enjoy freewireless networks (when they own aneduroam login) in the city of Pula in Istriain Croatia. The Wi-Fi networkPulaFreeAir has 17 locations in the city.

HHOOSSPPIITTAALLSS AANNDDLLAAMMPPPPOOSSTTSSThe UK extended its eduroam footprintthrough NHS teaching hospital trustcollaborations. For instance in Oxford,eduroam overlaid onto hospitals’ Wi-Finetwork infrastructures supportsmedical students from across the UK atnumerous teaching hospitals.

Cooperating with local authoritieswill also see greater eduroam coveragein city centres, particularly where localuniversities are involved in jointinfrastructure or transport projects. InCambridge, we could soon seeeduroam-providing access pointsmounted onto city council lampposts.

Edward Wincott, eduroam ServiceManager, Jisc said: “Having eduroamavailable outside the traditional campusempowers students, teachers,researchers and users. They can work,study and enjoy high performanceinternet access at locations of theirchoosing, making for greaterproductivity and satisfaction.”

OOUUTTSSIIDDEE EEUURROOPPEEeduroam, although a Europeaninvention, has spread to many parts ofthe world, including to Japan. In Tokyo,you can use your eduroam login tohotspots at coffee shops, conferencecentres and major shopping centres in the city centre.

Service Providerscan offer their services to a much wideraudience making their platforms morecost-effective and Identity Providers candramatically reduce their workload asthey no longer need to maintainidentities of temporary or visitingresearchers and staff. With Users,Service Providers and Identity Providersall benefiting from AAI, NRENs, LargeInternational Projects and Institutionsneed to be positioned to support theserequirements.

Yet despite the benefits of AAI,nearly half of all GÉANT partners don’tyet have an Identity federation. This isnot only restricting the ability of theirusers to gain access to services butcould increase costs within the NREN.

FFAAAASS –– EENNAABBLLIINNGG NNRREENNSSTTOO OOPPEERRAATTEE AANN IIDDEENNTTIITTYYFFEEDDEERRAATTIIOONN

The development of a nationalIdentity federation is not a trivial activityand GÉANT’s Federation as a Service(FaaS) task was created specially to helpthese NRENs and other groups. FaaSwill support NRENs in building theirIdentity federations by providing andhosting federation management tools onbehalf of the NREN. The FaaS providesIdentity federation operators with toolsto perform the registration of Identity andService Providers, effective Metadatamanagement and aggregation includingintegration with eduGAIN, secureMetadata signing and central DiscoveryService. By providing these tools to theNRENs, they will be able to focus onbuilding the Authentication andAuthorisation Infrastructure in theirregion by supporting the development ofService Provider and Identity Provider inmember institutions.

The aim is to recruit as manyNRENs as possible, in a positive drive toreduce greenhouse gas (GHG)emissions. Already 10 NRENs havetaken advantage of this and it is hopedat least 20 more will have followed suitby March 2015. The benefits to NRENsare many:• Make your efforts and work

communities reduce energy usage. • Educate the next generation in

good, environmentally sustainable, work practices.

WWHHYY IISS TTHHIISS SSOOIIMMPPOORRTTAANNTT??In order to reduce the impact of ICT onthe environment, we all need to takeresponsibility and take action now. Thehuman impact on the climate system isclear and it is extremely likely (95–100%probability) that our influence was thedominant cause of global warmingbetween 1951 and 2010.*

By developing a commonenvironmental policy, NRENs can beginto adopt standards to measure overallenvironmental performance and settargets for efficiency. This will help tomaximise the positive impact NRENscan have, boosting collective powerwhich will help to stimulate, found andsupport the greening of ICT.

Arecent study by the Global e-Sustainability Initiative(ggeessii..oorrgg) suggests that theinternet releases around 900m

tonnes of CO2 a year – 1.9% of theworld’s CO2 emissions and as much asthe aviation industry. In addition, the useof precious metals and rare earthminerals in IT equipment leads to evengreater environmental impacts.

GÉANT and its National Researchand Education Network partners(NRENs) and the wider ICT communityhave a responsibility to ensure they areworking to be as environmentallysustainable as possible. To that end, The GÉANT Green Team was created in2009 - to help promote environmentalsustainability across the R&Ecommunity.

COLIBRI: A NETWORKINGPROJECT FORRARE DISEASES

The Colibrì Project arises in thiscontext. Funded by the Italian Ministryof Health, Colibrì aims to sharemagnetic resonance images (MRIs)between 19 research hospitalsthroughout Italy that specialize in thefield of pediatric neurological diseases.

In this context, the network andspecialized ICT have a strategicimportance. We spoke with Dr. FabioTriulzi, Project Lead of Colibri.

Adisease or disorder is definedas rare in Europe when itaffects less than 1 in 2000.While this may seem to

indicate a very small phenomenon,there are between 6000 and 7000known rare diseases, affecting anestimated 30 million people in Europealone. Indeed, rare diseases as acategory are considered a public healthpriority for which the EU hasestablished a specific policy.1

What rare diseases have incommon is difficulty in finding theright diagnosis and scarce resources formedical research. Each disease has itsown specific traits, and with only ahandful of cases in any given region,networking is essential to be able toshare information on it and to reachcritical mass in understanding it andtrying to find a treatment.

Is it important to makean early diagnosis regardless of the existence of a cure?

Of course. This is always the case inmedicine, one must try to figure outwhat the problem is regardless ofwhether there may be a therapy.Unfortunately many rare diseases don’thave a specific cure, but a diagnosis isimportant in terms of familycounseling because in most cases wefind a disease with a geneticbackground, hence if I identify thedisease and understand how it istransmitted genetically, I can provideimportant information both to theparents and to the patient.

Furthermore, there are diseasesthat can significantly improve witheven small changes, for example in themetabolic diseases a proper diet canmake the difference: clearly if I begin totreat the disease promptly, I havebetter chances of success.

How do you see the future? Do you plan to expand the projectinternationally?

Yes, our idea is to extend ourcollaboration at the international level.We would like to understand what ishappening outside Italy because weknow that there are similar experienceselsewhere in the world: the key for thesuccess of Colibrì will be in our abilityto collaborate with more and morecenters worldwide.

The goal of our network is to makesure that if we see, say 40 cases of arare disease in Italy, estimating thatworldwide, with over 7 billion people,there could be perhaps 7000 peoplesuffering from this disease, thanks toan international network we could see200 cases and this really makes thedifference. Being connected to theItalian research network GARR whichin turn is interconnected to the GÉANTinternational research network can be astrong added value, both in terms oftechnology and networking.

Let's say I’m a doctor who has justperformed an MRI andI suspect the patient issuffering from a raredisease. What can I do?

First, I submit the image to theevaluation of a committee to checkwhether it fulfills a certain set ofprerequisites; then - but only afterbeing approved by the committee - Ishare the image with the other centers.Of course, patient data are encryptedand what I share is just a protocolnumber.

At this point the other centers canoffer suggestions, further analyze someof the tests and evaluate the case in acollegial manner: all this increases thechance of making a correct diagnosis. It may also happen that another centerhas already made the diagnosis,achieving a reliable genetic typing: inthis case the image is “promoted” asinformative to enrich the database andincrease the critical mass of knowledgeon a specific disease.

Howevermedical data sharing is very important,so flexibility is necessary to circulateinformation between hospitals andcolleagues. In relation to that, networkand information technologies play astrategic role because they help tocombine privacy and sharing. Theinterconnection of the ScientificHospitals (IRCCS) via the Italianresearch and education network GARRsince 2005 means a lot, not onlytechnologically but also in terms ofattitude towards sharing, because thereis an awareness of being part of anetwork and of being supported by anadvanced and reliable e-infrastructure,which makes data sharing safe andeasy. For Colibrì, GARR created avirtual private network to provide highsecurity for data travelling over thenetwork, complemented by secureaccess via IDEM, the Italian identityfederation”.

In our aging society, healthresearch is becoming more andmore the top-priority of not onlyhealth-care providers and

national governments, but also ofacademia and industry. All areconvinced that in order to keep oureconomy healthy and growing, we needto keep our population healthy andable well into old-age. To achieve this,new technologies and medication needto be developed through a betterunderstanding of the human body.High performance computing canincrease this understanding byallowing researchers to model andsimulate what goes on at the deepestand smallest levels of organs andphysical functions as realistically aspossible.

Since 2010 PRACE has supported303 projects on 6 Tier-0 systems, 55 ofwhich contribute to better health in

Europe. Out of the 8 billion core hoursawarded 1.3 billion are dedicated tothose health-related projects.Dementia-related research isprominently represented with 9projects awarded with PRACE ProjectAccess and 2 with PRACE PreparatoryAccess. Of those 11 projects a total of 5projects are linked to the EU flagshipinitiative Human Brain Project.

That health is an important topicfor research and science is also madeclear by the numerous national andEuropean grants given to projects inthis field. From the 55 PRACE-supported projects mentioned above, 8are linked to European ResearchCouncil (ERC) grants, while 3 receivesupport under the Marie CurieResearch Fellowship Programme.One more project receives an IDEAS-Ngrant.the Italian identity federation”.

DANTE SIGNS LOIWITH THE ACDCCONSORTIUM

In March DANTE signed a Letterof Intent (LoI) to join the ACDCproject as a user. Started inFebruary 2013, the European

Advanced Cyber Defence Centre(ACDC) aims to create a community ofstakeholders joining forces to fightbotnets. ACDC provides a complete setof solutions accessible online to

mitigate on-going attacks and targetedboth to end-users and to networkoperators. It also consolidates the dataprovided by various stakeholders into apool of knowledge, accessible throughthe ACDC central clearing house.

ACDC reaches out to users acrossEurope through 8 national relaycentres. ACDC currently operates as a

What arebotnets?A botnet is a collection of Internet-connected programscommunicating with other similarprograms in order to performtasks. This can be as mundane askeeping control of an InternetRelay Chat (IRC) channel, or itcould be used to send spam emailor participate in distributed denial-of-service attacks. The word botnetis a combination of thewords robot and network. Theterm is usually used with anegative or malicious connotation. In 2012, one of the mostdangerous botnets was ‘Grum’ –which was responsible for sending18 billion spam messages per dayand 18% of the world’s spam.

2014 is a great year to be a developer inGÉANT, there are so many excitingservices and systems being developedacross the project.

We are excited to announce theSummer School for Developers whichwill take place in Poznan, Poland from22 – 26 September (final dates TBC).Similar to previous events it will be akind of coding retreat aimed atproviding an opportunity to meet otherdevelopers and share ideas and

experiences. It will use well-knownmethodologies, code refactoring with aclear focus on testing and bestpractices.

Then expanding on the securityaspects of the Summer School, we willbe running another ever popularSecure Code Training course at DFN,in Berlin on the 28th – 30th of October2014. The course will run from middayon day one until midday on day threeto enable travel to and from the venue.

ACDC will provide tools andsensors to detect botnet related cyber-threats and mitigate cyber-attacks onnetworks, web sites, end usercomputers and mobile devices. Theproject intends to deploy acomprehensive set of national supportcentres throughout 8 Member Statesinterconnected to the ACDC centralclearing house. Through thisnetworked approach, ACDC will alsopave the way for a consolidatedapproach to protect organisations fromcyber-threats and support mitigation ofon-going attacks through easy access toan increasing pool of solutions.

ACDC services will be freelyaccessible at www.botfree.eu orthrough one of the national supportcentres, one of which is located at theCroatian Academic and ResearchNetwork – CARNet. CARNet, incooperation with other partners, hassuccessfully become involved in theimplementation process of the early-phase pilot project within theframework of the ACDC. The individualcomponents of the system developedby CARNet and its project partnerswere successfully tested in October2013 as part of the early-phase pilotproject. The early phase of the pilot was

thereby initiated, consisting of testcomponents that started submittingdata to the test central clearing house,the central system component that is atthe core of this project.

The success of the early-phase pilotis a prerequisite for furtherdevelopment of the system, itsupgrades and adjustments, as well asfor the realisation of one of the maingoals of the project – an efficientcombat against botnets.

By means of a number of actions,CARNet is working on the introductionand safe use of ICT in the academic andeducational community in Croatia. Aresult of the acknowledgment of thatrole is CARNet's engagement in thisproject supported by the EU. Two otherof DANTE’s academic partners are alsoinvolved in the project - DFN-CERTand FCCN – Foundation for NationalScientific Computing.

Together with other projectpartners, and now DANTE, CARNetintends to increase combat againstbotnets to a new level.

ACDC is a European pilot projectfunded under the CIP-PSP program,with a total cost of 15.5 M€ andfunding of 7.7 M€.

For 25 years, NIIFI, the National InformationInfrastructure Development Institute (the HungarianNREN) has been providing the academic, research and public collection community with a leading edgecommunication, information, and collaborationinfrastructure. Provision of multimedia (voice, videoand data) collaboration services is among the majorelements of that effort.

Successful activities from the last tenyears include:

• VoIP service, started in 2002, based on SIP, the leading-edge protocol at that time. Since then we have been using private ENUM tree for inside call routing.

• Videoconference service, from 2003, comprising a professional room-based video conference system with multipoint MCU and gatekeeper service, based on H.323 and the open source GnuGK as gatekeeper.

• Our Video on Demand / VideoSharing Repository and Conference Streaming servicestarted in 2003. It has been gradually improved and later rebranded (”Videotorium”, see http://videotorium.hu). It is also eduID/eduGAIN enabled, stores videos up to full HD resolution, synchronises videos with presentation slides or synchronizes two simultaneous video streams.

From the beginning, these serviceshave been very popular both inHungary and abroad. The NIIF MCUhas hosted numerous international VCsessions. NIIFI has been continuallyproviding technical support to the usercommunity and we put specialemphasis on the continuousimprovement of our multimediacollaboration service portfolio.Development is directly related to theinternational co-operations of ourdevelopment team and joint effortswith our partner NRENs.

The NIIFI expert team has beenexchanging experiences at all relatedglobal NREN platforms from thebeginning of the European co-operations on these topics, fromcontributing to the activities of theTERENA task forces to significantdeliverables like the TERENA SIPHandbook.

Another important area of ourcontribution is the NRENum.net trial,and later the related service. TheHungarian +36 country code has beendelegated in 2006, the yearNRENum.net trial was born. Duringthe transition from trial to service,NIIFI has been operating thenrenum.net master DNS server,delegating country codes, andsupporting the entire global NRENcommunity. We have implemented anumber of improvements, e.g.DNSSEC in NRENum.net tree, by thisway improving NRENum.net treesecurity. Furthermore, NIIFIintroduced and has been operating thehttp://crawler.nrenum.netcrawling service that helps monitoringENUM tree usage.

NIIFI has also been contributing toall GÉANT oriented co-operations inthe area. András Kovács led the firsteduCONF Service Activity and weparticipated in the GN2 Dubrovniktraining. More recently, we presented atraining course on WebRTCdevelopments and on how WebRTCcan be exploited by the NRENs.

Our goals are increasinglyinnovation oriented. We are in themiddle of renewing our Videotoriumservice and passionate about utilisingnew and open technologies such asHTML5, adaptive bitrate HTTP livestreaming, support for mobile devices,etc. We are working hard to re-implement, from scratch, our service tomake it open source and share thebenefits among the wide NRENcommunity. We foresee a substantial increase in thenumber of users being able to accessVideotorium as a result.

Last but not least, we are excitedabout another HTML5 collaborationtechnology called WebRTC JS API andunderlying rtcweb wire line protocols.We have been following thestandardization processes of both IETFand W3C and investigating the

complicated underlying protocols (ICE,TRICKLE ICE, etc.), and attractivebenefits (e.g. NAT, Firewall traversal,multiple IP addresses, IPV6 smoothtransition, security improvements), aswell as gathering information aboutimplementations, frameworks,troubleshooting interfaces.

We know that in order tounderstand (and master) WebRTC indepth we have to go through a learningcurve. We have to pilot and learn frommistakes, but we also know NielsBohr’s famous quote* and we won’tgive up! That’s why we’re alsoinvestigating WebRTC securityarchitectures and integration withSAML based eduID/eduGAINfederations, keeping in mind that E2Eauthentication by using SAML basedAAI is very challenging. Our interest iselevated not only by the open sourceopportunity but also by using the latestleading edge IETF technology and thepossibility of improving the protectionof communication and privacy.

We recently submitted a well-received proposal suggesting not onlystudying WebRTC technology and theimplementation options but alsopiloting a GÉANT level collaborationservice based on that novel technology.Numerous NRENs have expressedtheir interest in collaborating ifaccepted.

iMENTORS (www.imentors.eu) isan interactive resource, the first of itskind, to contain information about allknown e-infrastructures in Africa in the past five years. Launched for public use and input in July 2013iMENTORS provides you with thenecessary tool to visualise e-infrastructures and all relatedprojects in Africa.

In December 2013 iMENTORSreleased version three of its platform,which contains data across a multitudeof entities, classified as organisations,research infrastructures, fibre networksand projects and lays a foundation forbetter services, encourages researchand connects cross-continentalprogress. The next step is toconsolidate the results of our vast datacollection efforts throughcrowdsourcing and citizens’ input.

By mapping e-infrastructureinitiatives, the project aims to helpscientists, universities, research andeducation networks, students, ITengineers, e-infrastructure andtechnology providers, independentusers as well as policy-makers andinternational donors to:

• Access and make creative use of the vast amount of data available.

• Stay up to date with latest developments and trends in the e-infrastructures sector.

• Understand the importance of e-infrastructures impact on societal development.

• Contribute to the data store and enrich it.

• Exchange ideas, expertise and best practices or find contacts and opportunities in e-infrastructure development.

• Appreciate the results and benefits arising from research and feel more confident in how tax money is spent.

• Communicate with other users and influence e-infrastructure providers.

• Pass on knowledge and experience to others, and make a contribution to the knowledge society.

As of the end of the 2013, iMENTORSdatabase holds detailed information onover 2000 organisations and 150projects. The third version of theplatform contains updated informationon Organisations, ICT Projects, and e-infrastructures. It iscrowdsourcing-enabled, so thatregistered users can submitinformation to the project via theonline platform. iMENTORS alsoincludes information from CORDISand the World Bank database, in orderto create the largest online repositoryof e- infrastructure data. It is accessible

Data acquisition and validation willcontinue to progress until the end ofthe project. By the end of the projectthe interactive system will contain atleast 80% of all e-infrastructureavailable in Africa.

EGI PROVIDES CLOUD COMPUTING FOR EUROPE

these scientists to use the Europeangrid for almost as long as there hasbeen a European grid and have nowstarted with the Federated Cloud.

On the horizon are other potentialbig users like EISCAT_3D (E3D). E3Dis a future experiment that will studythe atmosphere in the Arctic and toinvestigate how the Earth's atmosphereis coupled to space. They have workedwith EGI to show how the FederatedCloud could provide their computingneeds when they get started in 2018.

A lot of work has gone on in the lastthree years to build a cloud for theERA, that cloud is the EGI FederatedCloud and it is ready to support theEurope’s researchers now.

distributed computing resources. Thismonth their cloud computing offering,the EGI Federated Cloud, goes into fullproduction.

The Federated Cloud began life in2011 with a small group tasked withinvestigating how EGI could providethe European Research Area (ERA)with cloud resources they could trust.Over the last three years the activityhas grown building a cloudenvironment based on open standardsto service researchers. Theinfrastructure federates resources frommultiple providers to provide advancedcompute capabilities, virtualisedresources and cloud storage.

The service is open to all Europeanresearchers providing access to servicesjust like the commercial providers.Users are able to setup and operatecustom services, applications andsimulations within virtualised hostingenvironments. With resourcescurrently spread over seven countriesthe infrastructure is pan-European andopen for business.

Said Andres Steijaert, leader of theGÉANT Support to Clouds Activity:“EGI and the GÉANT cloud servicesteam are currently exploring possiblecollaborations on cloud services to help

deliver effective solutions to the R&Esector”

Crucially EGI has not built any newtechnologies or tools to do this butintegrated existing foundations withcloud specific tools and services.“Reuse and evolution of currentsolutions has been key, meaning wedidn’t need to reinvent the wheel, bututilise our limited manpower mosteffectively” explains David Wallomfrom the Federated Cloud Task force“Using pre-existing open standardwhere possible the Federated Cloudworks for researchers and providersequally.”

Until recently the system has beenrunning as a testbed. During this timethe team and select user communitieshave been proving ideas, testing toolsand fixing bugs. The proof of conceptwork that has gone on has been drivenby some of the biggest areas of researchalready using the European grid’sresources but also communities still intheir infancy.

One of the keenest communitieshas been the virtual e-laboratory forbiodiversity researchers, BioVeL. Theyhave seen the potential of theFederated Cloud and are already inproduction with many of the tools theyprovide with more to come.

KAREL VIETSCH24/11/1952 – 23/02/2014 On 23 February this year the research and educationnetworking community experienced a sad loss whenit was announced that Karel Vietsch had passedaway, following a long illness.

Karel had been TERENA’sSecretary General fromMarch 1996 until March2012, when illness prevented

him from fulfilling his duties. In spiteof this illness, Karel continued to showa strong attention to TERENAactivities, providing information andsupport to the Secretariat staff andoccasionally engaging with the widercommunity.

Karel was also instrumental inshaping the GÉANT community, notonly in his role as Secretary General forTERENA, but also as a representativeon the GÉANT governance boards, aswell as leading the work on ‘Status andTrends’ in GÉANT (GN3).

His extensive knowledge, pairedwith his ability to commit fully toTERENA’s goals, made Karel arespected personality in the widerresearch and education networkingcommunity. In 2013 Karel’soutstanding contribution tonetworking and the Internet wasrewarded; appointed an Officer in theDutch Royal Order of Orange-Nassau,Karel was presented with the royalinsignia during a private ceremony on 13 May.

Speaking on behalf of the TERENASecretary staff, Acting SecretaryGeneral Valentino Cavalli said, “I would like to express the highestrespect to Karel for having brilliantlyshaped TERENA during all his years inservice, as well as our gratitude for themessage he gave us through hisconduct in his work - thoroughlybusiness wise and intrinsically ethical.We will miss you, Karel.”

The blog page set up for people toleave condolences for Karel’s family ishighly illustrative of the impact he had on so many.

Sad loss leadsto VietschFoundation Reflecting the comments from somany, of the better world Karel leftbehind for the R&E networkingcommunity, the positive outcome ofthis sad loss is the creation of theVietsch Foundation.

In his last will, Karel gaveinstruction for the creation of theVietsch Foundation which hasinherited his estate. The mission of thefoundation is to promote research anddevelopment of advanced Internettechnology for the benefit of researchand higher education, and relatedactivities.

The foundation was registered as anot-for-profit organisation in theNetherlands as of 23 February and, inaccordance with his will, a board hasbeen established initially composed ofValentino Cavalli (Chair), Bert vanPinxteren, John Dyer and AntoinetteVietsch.

Karel’s intention was for thefoundation to administer his legacy anddistribute it in the form of financialcontributions to innovative projects toadvance research and highereducation, as well as awarding aVietsch Medal annually - a recognitionof individuals or teams who havesignificantly contributed to innovativeand sustainable developments in thecommunity.

The establishment of the VietschFoundation was announced during theopening plenary session of theTNC2014 (TERENA NetworkingConference 2014) on 19 May in Dublin.

Short biography Karel graduated from LeidenUniversity in 1975 with a major inmathematics and minors ineconomics and theoretical computerscience. He was a teacher andresearcher at Leiden University, andobtained a PhD in mathematics in1979. After doing military service inThe Hague, sharing one computerwith twenty other conscripts, hejoined Delft University ofTechnology as manager of theDepartment of Mathematics andComputer Science.

In 1984 he moved to the Science PolicyDepartment of the Dutch Ministry ofEducation and Sciences, where he wasinvolved in the implementation of theresearch part of the government'sComputer Science Promotion Plan,which included the creation of anational research network, SURFnet.Climbing through the ranks within theministry he became Head of Unit forInformation and Infrastructure in1992, whereafter in 1996 he joinedTERENA as Secretary-General.

Karel's busy work schedule left himlittle spare time, but when he foundsome time off to travel he was keento enjoy the atmosphere and cultureof TERENA member countries.

Themed “Building a State of the ArtNetwork Infrastructure for Researchand Education”, the WACRENConference was hosted by the TogoNREN, TogoRER, and with a total ofsome 70 delegates, was opened bythe Minister for Higher Education ofTogo who emphasised the need fordeveloping WACREN in the region.The conference programme gavecentre stage to the NRENs in theregion and the opportunity to describedevelopments in each of theircountries, showing that withoperational networks now in place inSenegal and Nigeria, the other NRENsin the region are making goodprogress towards implementing theirown national infrastructure.

Following a successful tenderphase, the Central AsianResearch and EducationNetwork (CAREN) has

achieved a substantial upgrade whichcompleted in March when theTajikistan circuit became operational.This marks an important step towardsupgrading the ancient Silk Road to a21st-century high-speed Internethighway for research and educationacross the region and significantlyimproves connectivity between CentralAsia and Europe and other parts of theworld.

Operational since 2010, CARENnow interconnects scientists andstudents at over 300 institutions acrossKazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistanand Turkmenistan, with Uzbekistanalso a candidate country. Circuits toTajikistan and Turkmenistan have beenupgraded to 155Mbps whilstKazakhstan’s and Kyrgyzstan’s links

now operate at a capacity of 622Mbpsand 600 Mbps respectively. Therecent tender has quadrupled the linkcapacities and since the start of theproject costs per Mbps have falleneleven-fold - a major achievementconsidering the challenges of thetelecommunications markets withinCentral Asia. The first phase of theCAREN project was successfullycompleted in October 2013. CAREN2initially will run to March 2015.Discussions are underway to extendCAREN2 further with additional ECfunding.

Increased bandwidth, togetherwith improved network performancewill provide an additional boost toresearch and education collaborationswithin the region and further afield inareas such as seismology, glaciermonitoring, distance education andsolar technology. With extreme weatherevents increasinglyhitting the newsheadlines around the

world, accurate and timely forecastsare essential for effective disasterwarning and mitigation systems. This,in turn, calls for joint research effortswithin the global meteorologicalcommunity to improve models andtools for predicting severe weather,such as hurricanes, tornadoes,cyclones, floods, heat waves etc.High-speed Internet connections,provided by ORIENTplus and its pan-European counterpart GÉANT, are vitalfor such international researchcollaborations.

In 2003 the World MeteorologicalOrganization (WMO) established The

Observing system Research andPredictability EXperiment (THORPEX)to accelerate improvements in theaccuracy of one-day to two-week high-impact weather forecasts for thebenefit of society, the economy, andthe environment. A key component ofthis programme is the THORPEXInteractive Grand Global Ensemble(TIGGE) project which facilitatesresearch on numerical, probabilistic(i.e. ensemble) weather prediction byproviding academic researchersaccess to ensemble forecast datacollected daily in near-real time from10 leading operational forecastingcentres across the world. Thedatabases and data portals have beendeveloped by three archive anddistribution centres: European Centre

for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts(ECMWF) in Reading - UK, USNational Centre for AtmosphericResearch (NCAR) in Boulder,Colorado, and China MeteorologicalAdministration (CMA) based in Beijing.

The operational forecastingcentres supplying daily forecasts are:

High-speed data network connections,such as ORIENTplus, are vital for theseamless transfer of vast amount ofdata and the overall success of thisinvaluable resource for the globalmeteorological community.ORIENTplus allows for fast databasesynchronisation of the TIGGE archive,hosted by ECMWF and CMA. Thevolume of TIGGE data exchanged

every day has been steadilyincreasing over the years mainly dueto enhanced model resolution. Thedata exchange between ECMWF andCMA started at some 240 GB per dayback in 2006. The latest figures show aflow of TIGGE data in the region of 500GB / day from ECMWF to CMA andsome 40 GB / day in the oppositedirection.

In addition to the TIGGEexchange, ECMWF and CMA have abilateral agreement by which CMA canmake use of all operational real-timeforecasts produced routinely byECMWF. Data requested by CMA aretransferred over ORIENTplus atapprox. 50 GB per day.

Prior to the upgrade ofORIENTplus at the beginning of 2013,due to bandwidth-constraints the dataexchange between ECMWF and CMAwas feasible only via the third archivecentre at NCAR in the USA.ORIENTplus has enabled the directtransfer between the two centres,making time-critical, complexapplications with vast geographicalreach and huge societal impact aneveryday reality.

attendees, including clinicians andresearchers from within the multi-disciplinary dengue fever community,public health officials as well asNational Research and EducationNetwork (NREN) representatives fromacross the Asia-Pacific. The discussions also provided anopportunity to explore how the NRENcommunity and research andeducation (R&E) networks, at thenational, regional and global level, cansupport the medical community’sinternational collaborative efforts tocombat Dengue Fever in endemiccountries and to prevent its spread. Inaddition to speakers from Pakistan, thePhilippines, Bangladesh and Malaysiawho attended the workshop in person,colleagues from Singapore, Sri Lanka,Australia and Japan joined thediscussions remotely via a live videolink provided by SingAREN, LEARN,AARNet and NII /NICT respectively.

All sites were able to view thepresentations and follow thediscussions in real time using themulti-point videoconference system

supported by their respective nationalR&E networks and the regional TransEurAsia Information Network (TEIN).With high-definition images and stableconnections, participants experiencedvideoconferencing first-hand, as atime- and cost-effective collaborationtool.

The presentations covered a widerange of topics, from clinical casemanagement to relevant climateimpact studies. A round-tablediscussion that followed focused ontaking stock of objectives andactivities, as well as on how to moveforward by working together andsharing experiences and processes tobetter combat the resurgence of thedisease in the region.

Participants agreed to build on thepositive experience of the workshopand NREN-supportedvideoconferencing and to follow upwith virtual meetings around specifictopics and areas of research interest.Professor Leo Yee Sin (Tan Tock SengHospital, Singapore) stepped forwardto facilitate the next virtual meeting onclinical case management.

Discussions are underway withNRENs in Latin America and theCaribbean, among other worldregions, about adapting this workshopmodel to the local context to help buildregional communities.

The driving force behind theworkshop, Prof. Francis Lee Bu Sung,President of SingAREN and Chair ofGovernors of TEIN*CC, commented:“This was a very inspiring event. Ihope it will act as a catalyst for morejoint actions. Everyone left withrenewed energy and enthusiasm in

our quest to stop the spread ofDengue Fever and to improve itstreatment!”

The 2014 Internet2 GlobalSummit, the successor to theInternet2 Annual MemberMeetings, was held in Denver,

Colorado, from 6-11 April. With asignificant number of European R&Enetworks in attendance, alongsideDANTE and TERENA, the GÉANTcommunity was well represented.

Internet2’s Annual MemberMeeting was renamed as the Internet2Global Summit in 2014 with a view tolending greater emphasis to globalinteractions for the US R&E networkingcommunity, a direction emphasised bythis year’s attendees representingsome 35 countries worldwide.

Traditionally, Internet2 MemberMeetings have been well attended bythe GÉANT community, not just byDANTE and TERENA, but also by anever-increasing number of EuropeanNRENs. The 2014 Internet2 GlobalSummit saw a continuation of thistrend with a dozen or so Europeannetworks in attendance.

Whilst the event provides anenvironment in which to engage indirect discussions with the North

American and wider global R&Enetworking communities, it alsoprovides an excellent opportunity topromote the work being done inEurope both by NRENs and GÉANT. InDenver, attendees from EuropeanNRENs, TERENA or DANTE presentedin close to ten sessions, significantlyraising the profile of Europe as animportant player in globalcollaboration, with topics ranging fromthe Global CEO Forum and GlobalNetwork Architecture to user support,high-quality video transmissionsincluding for surgery broadcasts, ICTin biotechnology, trust and firewall-on-demand.

For GÉANT itself, the new format,which distributed international networksessions throughout the conference,provided an ideal platform to highlightto a broad audience the global reach(over 100 countries worldwide), wide-ranging work and high value of theEuropean R&E Network. A one-hournet-cast presentation covered theGÉANT infrastructure and project,service developments in Europe anduse cases of the network. The impact
