Its that time of year again when all roads lead to the Dingle International Film Festival, couched within the breathtaking town of Dingle on the beautiful Dingle Peninsula, southwest Ireland and part of The Wild Atlantic Way, the festival takes places annually in mid-March and as such it often celebrates St Patrick’s Day as part of its festival programming. Housed within this Gaeltacht area, Dingle IFF is proud to promote the Irish language and is the only festival offering an award for Irish Script writing with its Físín event. Dingle is home to many filmmakers, one of Ireland’s only independent cinemas, is a known film location (Ryan’s Daughter, Far and Away) and a major tourist destination making it the perfect home for our festival.Dingle IFF offers feature screenings from Ireland and around the globe, covering all genres; it is home to the Gregory Peck Award: For Excellence in the Art of Film, (recipients including Gabriel Byrne, Jim Sheridan, Jean Jacques Beineix, Stephen Frears and Laura Dern); it is the

first Irish festival to embrace the field of Animation and in 2015 held Ireland’s first ever Animation Awards ceremony in association with Animation Ireland; it is home to the Murakami Award for animation, (recipients including Jimmy T. Murakami, Richie Baneham and Tomm Moore); it has a full and inclusive Animation Programme of events as part of Animation Dingle.Dingle IFF is a sought after event, which is personal, has style and exhibits film in unique locations. These locations include: The Phoenix Cinema, built in 1937; and the fully HD 200- year- old St. James’ Church. Our festival club nights are held in a variety of traditional pubs each evening. Dingle IFF actively promotes and platforms Irish film, Irish filmmakers and Irish animation, whilst also playing host to major industry players both from Ireland and abroad. Dingle IFF is an established date on the film festival circuit and is now actively promoting Irish film and animation products in the world market, including an invited curated

programme at the 31st Santa Barbara International Film Festival and this year’s Toronto Irish Film Festival.

This year’s programme is packed with films from Ireland, UK, USA, China, Japan, Taiwan, Canada, Australia, France, Finland, Switzerland, Hungary, Slovakia, Germany, Spain, Poland, Italy and Turkey all included in our selected programme.

Some interesting picks include:St. Patrick’s Day: Opening Fim: RYAN’S DAUGHTERGregory Peck 100th Anniversary

Dingle IFF and the Peck family will be celebrating with a cinema digital screening of ROMAN HOLIDAY to close the festival. Gregory Peck’s Great-Grandmother Catherine Ashe comes from the area.

FAMILY BREAKS

FILM

9CONNECT MAGAZINE March 2016

First communions and confirmations are always memorable moments at some point in the life of every family in the county, the dress or the suit has now been chosen so it’s time to look at what else is required for the day.

HAIR is a very important part of the outfit. For the girls hair is always important if it’s long should it be up or down, curly or straight so Maureen Francis and the team at Brush and Blush have taken time out to give us their advice to mums. Brush and Blush is located in Caheranne Tralee and are specialists in Communion and Confirmation styling.

What girl doesn’t love getting her hair styled for a special occasion? A lot of thought goes into choosing that special occasion dress and having the perfect hairstyle is equally as important to your little one. Having long hair opens up a variety of choices when it comes to choosing a hairstyle. You can go for a timeless braided up style or even all curls. If wearing a veil or head piece there are a huge range of options and all need to be taken into consideration when choosing the hair style on the day. Shorter hair is just as beautiful when curled and for a change why not add some fresh flowers to the hair for an extra girlie look. Moms why not avail of our pamper package Blow-dry/up style Spray tan & Make up all under one roof for and amazing €49. Unit 2, Caheranne Village, Strand Road, Tralee. T: 066 7136580

PHOTOGRAPHS are also very important to ensure that memories last a lifetime, John Walsh Photography have been creating family memories for many years now so we ask them to remind parents what are the most important things when getting the correct photos of the special day. John is based in Ballybeggan and can create your memories in your own home or at their studio whichever suits

you best, so book your appointment today.Communions are normally the first important event in your child’s life and capturing the innocent look that is still clearly visible at that age is priceless. We would always advise that the formal pictures required be taken as early as possible to ensure the best attention from the happy child. Always remember to include rosary beads, prayer books and accessories that are part of the outfit. We would also advise to ensure grandparents, godparents and any other relevant relations are included for shots with the child as these can become wonderful memories to have in years to come.

Our best tip for the day is to try and relax, if a parent is stressed about the day it will become evident in the faces of all the family and in turn will be captured on camera, so please relax and enjoy the day.

CAKE.... yes its official we all love cake, and it’s also a tradition to have cake at parties so if you are having a party for your communion child cake is a must. Traditional sponge cakes or even the rich fruit cake are still very popular but the latest craze to reach us is the fantastic chocolate biscuit cake which is a firm favourite at all parties, in recent years these cakes are being produced and we have to say they are delicious, we are just featuring one or two images today from Heavenly Baked based here in Tralee, and we in Connect have had the pleasure of trying out a few of their cakes, so if you are looking for a cake with a difference call Teresa today 087 2756173, but her advice is order well in advance as demand this time of year can be huge, and if you have an idea or a picture let her know. You won’t be disappointed.

STRESS FREE CATERING FOR YOUR COMMUNION DAY

More and more people are now catering for their loved ones communion day at home. The key to a stress free day is preparation. Here are my top tips to help you out and make the day enjoyable for you.• Have a few nibbles for you guests when they arrive.

Gourmet crisps, bread sticks and dips etc..• Wet dishes such as beef stroganoff, chicken curry or a

stew are ideal as you can make them the day before the communion.

• Set the dishes up buffet style and serve with rice or baked potatoes.

• Have a couple of nice salads either homemade or shop brought.

• If possible try and hire or borrow some chafing dishes. These will keep your food hot and allow your guests to help their selves.

• Desserts are often brought along by relatives or friends, or why not just keep it to the cake?

• For late comers or if you fancy a bite later, why not fire up the barbecue and cook some burgers and sausages.

• For the kids, why not order in some pizza or make some fresh chicken goujons. And feed the kids first as this allows you to enjoy your meal.

BEEF STROGANOFFServes 12

1. Heat the butter and oil in a large frying pan. 2. Cook the sliced onion for 5 minutes until softened. Meanwhile

season the flour with salt, pepper and paprika, then toss in the beef to coat lightly, shaking off any excess.

3. Remove the onions from the pan and place in a cast iron casserole or large sauce pan. Add a little more oil and butter if required. Add the beef to the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes until browned. If you don’t have a large pan, you can do this in batches.

4. Add the mushrooms and garlic to the pan and stir fry for a couple of minutes. Place the beef and mushrooms into the casserole or sauce pan. Pour in the stock and vinegar, bring to the boil then lower the heat and simmer gently for 12-15 minutes or until the beef is tender.

5. Stir in the cream, mustard and parsley and cook gently for 4 minutes

6. Sprinkle with a little paprika and serve with rice..

• 3 tbsp white wine vinegar• 3 tbsp wholegrain mustard• 1 large onion, sliced• 6 tbsp plain flour• 4 tbsp paprika, plus extra for

sprinkling

Remember you will be in the outfit all day and most definitely photographed at some stage so it is very important to be both stylish and comfortable. This season all shades of pinks from pastel blush to the brighter cerise are waiting to be discovered along with the coolest of blues from turquoise to the regal royal blue. Keep an eye open for the monochrome classic of black and white with a pop of colour such as yellow, pink or red.

When you are buying for an occasion make your style work hard for you by thinking ahead. If you are buying for your child’s communion in May do you have a wedding in July? Adding a headpiece, swapping the warmer jacket for a chiffon scarf/shawl or changing the style or colour of your bag are all simple ways to restyle an existing outfit. Another good tip when purchasing for an occasion is to turn the buying order on its head. If your family will disown you if they see you in your favourite, go to outfit again, then why not get a new dress to match your existing(and probably very comfortable) shoes, handbag, wrap or headpiece. Kerry ladies are very lucky with the selection of stylish boutiques they can choose from for occasion wear and there is a beautiful range in shops at the moment but please remember that if you have a wedding in August or September our autumn/winter collections will be arriving around then and your choice may be limited. In this case the early bird will not catch the worm but the best outfit!

Well that’s all for now,

HAPPY SHOPPING,

Danny

16 CONNECT MAGAZINE March 2016

Family values this month looks at what must be said without any reservation the most popular family in the county this month. With over 30000 votes in the county between them Michael Healy Rae and his brother Danny ran a very strategic campaign in this general election and it has proved successful for them. While Michael is a returning TD its pastures new for his Brother who progresses from councillor to position of TD representing the county of Kerry in the new 5 seat constituency which was developed this time round. Michael is well known to many across the island of Ireland for his hard work and dedication and most of all his ability to deliver on his word, which as we all know is unique trait in any person.

Michael when did it all begin in the political arena for you? You got the highest vote in the country was it a surprise to you the vote you got? With regard to my political life, it started off in National School when a T.D. would die in some part of the country, it is an awful thing to say, but I would be delighted with the news because it

would mean that I would be travelling with my father 3 weeks fighting a bye-election in that part of the country. It was not a holiday I would be put at genuine work, putting up posters, handing out leaflets and doing the ordinary things that would need to be done to win an election, I used to enjoy it, I met many nice hardworking county councillors, TD’s and Senator’s from all over the country and it gave me a strong interest in politics. I am delighted with the vote I got,

What are the main objectives for your term? Will Kerry see a difference with the Duo that is Healy Rae Power on the double? What it will mean is, we will be able to offer an enhanced comprehensive political service which is based on hard work, common sense and experience in dealing with the day to day problems and difficulties that people have. Even on the day that the votes were being counted, I had my book in my pocket and

I was answering calls, dealing with problems not even knowing whether we would be elected or not, it is all about working for the people to the best of your ability from early morning until late at night and always remember the phones are never turned off.

Your dad was a wonderful man this would be an amazing sight for him to see, do you think this influenced you as lads

growing up? My father instilled in all of us a work ethic, outside of politics altogether his attitude was if you were only brushing the yard, you brush it well and you leave nothing out. If you were serving a customer or dealing with any issue whatsoever you should not give it 100% but 110% so we would be sure he would be happy to see that on one day in County Kerry that over 30,000 people gave their No,1 vote to a Healy-Rae that is something to be remembered for a long long time. Where to from here, now that Kerry is a one county constituency will we be seeing more of ye in North Kerry? People in North Kerry will have to start getting used to seeing myself on a continuous basis to the very best of my ability as to represent an area you have to make yourself fully and totally assessable and I will do that to the best of my ability at all times.

So there you have it, the Healy Raes are set to become a household name in the county and beyond for some time to come yet.

SOUTH KERRY BROTHERS BREAK ELECTION RECORDS

Hi everybody I love this time of year when we have hope of a bright and cheerful Spring time ahead of us .But first of all let me extend warmest congratulations to Margaret( Connect Kerry editor) and Sean on their wedding on the 12th Feb. All here at That’s Perfect wish them the very best as they start married life.

Confirmations and Communions begin this month and I am being asked a lot what is suitable for such occasions, as with any occasion it totally depends on the person. From my experience on the shop floor, outfits for confirmation are not as formal or dressy as communion, If you have a well cut dress in one colour you can add a chunky neck piece and matching earrings, together with contrasting bag with matching shoes and there’s your outfit, if your dress is brightly patterned, try keeping jewellery to the bare minimum and in the same colour tones as the outfit.

Communions tend to be a little more stylish and dressy, so fascinators may be an option. Please don’t forget that it is not ladies day at the races and your headpiece doesn’t need

to pick up sky sports. Another option that is becoming fashionable is a well cut trousers and stylish top and jacket. You can accentuate this with a scarf and brooch. The best advice I can ever give anyone is whatever you are comfortable wearing go ahead and wear. please feel free to call in to the shop if you would like some friendly advice and hints on matching your outfit and accessories. Always happy to help and enjoy your special day with your child.

Until next time,

Carmel

As Easter draws near many businesses see it as the start of ‘’the season’’. As trends continue to change, how can you promote your business without losing the run of your Budget?

RADIOAlthough it remains one of the more expensive marketing options, radio offers quick and direct access to listeners. Positioning and timing are key to generating value.

PRINT MEDIAAlthough the appeal of print media has reduced in recent years, you can’t beat something you can hold and see. It remains particularly relevant to the retail and services sector. It generally offers better value and results when done for a period of time,

as opposed to once off Ads and/or Features. ONLINE MARKETINGThe options to advertise online continue to grow and include Websites, LinkedIn, Facebook, Google Ads, and booking websites. Some of these are free but the range has increased to include premium offerings for all price levels. Most proactive businesses now see online marketing as key to positioning their business.

MIXING IT UPIn general most marketing solutions require a mix of radio, print media and online. Don’t be afraid to ask for help as it is a large cost

for most businesses. Set a Budget and if something isn’t working, don’t be afraid to change.

NB: Where possible you should try track and monitor the impact of any campaign. Use the results to market more cost effectively in future and fine tune your target audience.

A few years back I read a book that changed how I approach business and branding forever, it was called ‘Blue Ocean Strategy’, in a nutshell it says you shouldn’t try to fight it out with your competitors for the same market, because it’s a vicious fight (red bloody ocean), instead find your USP and promote your business to a pool of customers interested in that unique angle (blue ocean).

Small businesses will never, ever, ever beat the big guys…that’s just how it is, accept it!Big businesses have seemingly unlimited funds to promote their businesses, and us poor small guys will never be able to compete when it comes to marketing spend. So before you ever sit down to market your business, and certainly before you spend a single cent of your hard earned money, you should know a few things:• What is your business’s USP (unique selling point)?• What is your business’s Personality and Brand?• What does your Marketing Strategy tell you to do next?• Who is your existing customer base?• Who are your marketing advocates?• Who are your target market and how can you reach them?• What is your end-game (goals)?

At WeeBiz Media we work with small businesses every day of the week who, at the beginning, struggle to answer even one of these questions. When you have a clear direction and understanding of what your business represents to your customers, you’ll be ready to swim into open waters without big business competitors drowning out your message.

Is the Use of CCTV Exposing Employers to Risk?

Having CCTV signage in place, visible to your employees, is a requirement when you use CCTV in the workplace. As well as this the reasons for the use of the CCTV must be outlined in writing to your staff in line with Data Protection Legislation i.e. to investigate theft in the workplace or for use during employee disciplinary investigations.

No doubt the benefit of having a surveillance via CCTV cannot be overstated particularly in terms of proving evidential burden in criminal cases or disciplinary investigations involving employees or in proving damage suffered for civil cases.

Interestingly, the use of CCTV by employers in Ireland has increased significantly. Cases coming before the Workplace Relations Commission indicate high level of its use especially during the investigatory and disciplinary process. Recently, the Tribunal sanctioned an employer with €3,000 fine for secretly monitoring his employees and in another case €25,000 was awarded in favour of an employee who took an unfair dismissal case against his employer in circumstances where evidence from the CCTV was ruled as inconclusive - it didn’t provide any clear or accurate evidence.

As beneficial as CCTV can be, it could sometimes be very risky for employers who fail to adhere strictly to the restrictions and rules imposed by the law. Employers have legitimate reason to protect themselves and their business when they install CCTV in the perimeters of their premises but mustensure they consider the rights of their employees also.

The Data protection Acts 1988 – 2004 ensure that employers do not breach privacy rights of their employees. Considering this Employers are obliged to take due care in dealing with personal data of their employees.

Having a clear policy on CCTV monitoring could save an employer from paying compensation for a potential breach of an employee’s rights if CCTV footage of them is used incorrectly.

Having a clear policy in place makes you and your employees aware of your own practices regarding CCTV. Having company policies in place ensures transparency and clarity regarding company procedures for the employer and employee and any other party that may need to view company policies and procedures at any stage.

Be aware of rights and responsibilities on:• Having a CCTV policy in place• Retaining and disposing the CCTV footage recorded;• Carrying out monitoring in a fair manner;• Seeking consent and having a policy signed off;• Notices on CCTV in operation being on display for both employees

and clients or customers;

At HR suite, we pride ourselves on building long-term relationships with our clients and the services we provide is second to none. For a comprehensive clear policy on CCTV contact one of our HR Advisors on 0667102887.

MAC DOMHNAILL DENTAL TRALEE, 11 Denny Street Tralee066 7121457, [email protected]

Pearly Whites:Fáilte RomhaibhBy Dr. Marcas Mac Domhnaill

It is seldom that a national debate arises from one television progamme. This, however, was the case following the recent screening of the ‘Sugar Crash’ programme on RTÉ. This programme showed the effects of sugar on our medical and dental health. These dental effects can be all the more serious as less than half the Irish population have frequent dental check ups and only 22% of people use dental floss. In recent surveys, it has been stated that dental phobia causes three quarters of the population to suffer toothache rather than visit their dentist for dental treatment and that seven out of ten children do not get enough calcium from their diet. All of these facts show us the importance of maintaining good dental health, which has a direct impact on our medical health. If poor dental care and poor diet are put together, the results are disastrous. We all saw this during the screening of ‘Sugar Crash’, when we viewed young children in hospital, having multiple teeth removed in one dental session. Next to the common cold, tooth decay remains the most prevalent disease in Europe and the United States.

We can all make small changes in our diet and our dental care habits. With our cleaning habits, brushing should be done twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste. The paste should be left in the mouth for 4-5 minutes after brushing before spitting it out. One should not rinse the mouth after brushing as to do so, would remove the minerals from the surface of the enamel. Mouth rinses should be used before brushing or at a different time of the day. Mouth rinsing alone is never sufficient to keep teeth and gums clean.

It is sad to think that barely half of all Irish children brush their teeth more than once a day. The majority of these children will get tooth decay and gum disease.

Most adults still only change their toothbrush once a year. It is recommended that a toothbrush should be replaced 4 times a year. It should also be changed after any illness e.g. cold, flu or sore throat.

With regard to children’s diets, parents should try to form good habits from an early age. Baby bottle tooth decay is caused by prolonged bottle feeding with a sugar containing drink. Children should never be put to sleep with a sugar filled drink from a bottle. Milk is an excellent source of calcium which can help strengthen teeth. Keeping ‘sugar’ foods and drinks to around the three main meals of the day will help to reduce the rate of tooth decay. You will get fewer cavities if you eat a packet of sweets in one sitting and then brush your teeth than if you slowly eat one sweet at a time all day.

Irish children eat almost four times more chocolate and sweets and drink three times as many soft drinks as their peers in Canada and Norway. Now is the time to continue this national debate on the ‘abuse’ of sugar in our diet. Tús maith leath na hoibre – A good start is half the work.

DEPRESSIONSelf-Help for

THE GRACEFUL ART OF FORGIVENESS

One of the most powerful things we can do for our emotional health is to learn the art of forgiveness.

We all have things in our past that create some level of resentment or bitterness: a broken relationship, a hurtful action on the part of somebody close, a missed opportunity, a great loss – something that happened to us that wasn’t our fault, and over which we were powerless. We blame somebody else, and harbour ill-feeling towards them. Sometimes, they won’t acknowledge the wrong they’ve done, and our resentment increases. We brood over the injustice we’ve suffered, and find it hard to let go.This is a very common condition, and a very unhappy one. Bitterness and resentment, though often very understandable, keep us locked in a relationship of anger and vengeful thoughts. If we nurse resentment, no matter how justified, we increase the levels of the hormone cortisol in our systems. High levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) are very detrimental to our wellbeing, causing all sorts of problems from weight gain to sleeplessness, and ultimately lower our immune system functioning.

So, how do we learn to forgive? The first thing to understand is that forgiveness has nothing to do with the person who hurt you, and everything to do with you. Forgiveness does not mean that somebody’s bad behaviour is acceptable or justifiable, it simply means that you refuse to engage in a mental and emotional battle that you cannot win.

Many people say they can’t forgive, because that would mean that the perpetrator “gets away with it”. In most cases, of course, the perpetrator is already getting away with it, and not forgiving doesn’t matter to them anyway. For us, though, the act of forgiving releases us from our bonds with the perpetrator, and allows us to let go of the hurt and pain we feel. We don’t even have to tell the perpetrator that we forgive them, because it is an internal act of making peace with what we cannot change. St Augustine said that forgiveness is the act of surrendering our desire for revenge. This can be a difficult thing to do, as sometimes we can cling to thoughts of revenge with a passion. In this case, it is well to remember another adage: Living well is the best revenge.

Learn to live well, and you will find that bitterness and resentment are no longer what you need.

Menopause is an inevitability that every woman faces. The term literally means “last period” and occurs when the body stops producing oestrogen from the ovaries.

Driving to the supermarket-getting there and wondering what you came for!Lists on the fridge and dashboard to remind you. Feeling hot and flustered in meetings, wondering has anyone else noticedTossing and turning all night, exhausted in the morning

Some women dread it, others sail through it. It doesn’t have to be a nightmare time in anyone’s life. Not everyone has symptoms but for those who do there are many options to deal with it.

The average age of menopause in women in this country is 51 years. This means most women will live at least one third of their lives after the menopause making it even more important to be as healthy as possible. Younger women can undergo Premature Menopause due chemotherapy, radiotherapy to their ovaries, when the ovaries are removed surgically or for genetic/unexplained reasons.

Symptoms of Menopause - what are they like and does everyone get them?Approximately three quarters of all women have some symptoms. Everyone is different-some women have more, and varying types, of symptoms. All women cope differently.

Symptoms include:• Hot flushes varying in severity• Night sweats• Difficulty in sleeping• Tiredness and exhaustion- may be related to poor sleep• Joint aches• Headaches• Irritability• Reduced sex drive/ vaginal dryness• Bladder symptoms which may be misinterpreted at urinary tract infection

Medical issues which can be happening silently, and unknown to women, include osteoporosis (thinning of the bones) and cardiovascular disease. We know that cardiovascular disease kills ten times more women in the UK than breast cancer each year (120,000 vs. 12,000) but women in the menopausal age group perceive breast cancer as being their biggest health worry.Osteoporosis has a huge impact on women’s lives by increasing the risk of hip fractures

and the ensuing health problems. 50% of people with hip fractures never return to full independent lives and 20% die in the following year. Thus, where at all possible prevention is better than cure! For women who are menopausal at a younger age such medical problems will obviously occur earlier and have greater impact- this makes seeking early medical health crucial.Brain health can also be an issue and some research suggests an increased risk of Parkinson’s and dementia in women who have had early menopause.

I have heard about Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). Is it dangerous?HRT is “what it says on the tin”! It replaces the oestrogen that your body is no longer producing. For women who have not had a hysterectomy they also need a hormone called progestogen to prevent abnormal thickening of the lining of the womb. HRT has many benefits including:• control of symptoms• reducing osteoporosis• reducing risks associated with cardiovascular disease• improving brain health• Reduce the risk of bowel cancer. There are now a myriad of formulations of HRT available. It can be taken as a tablet, skin patch, gel or combination of some of the above. Nowadays people do not always have to have periods with HRT. Therefore HRT can be individualised and tailored depending on a woman’s needs.

It is acknowledged that the women who benefit most are those who start HRT within 6 years of menopause and before age 60.The main risk that people associate with HRT is that of breast cancer. Sadly, this has been due to the publicity that surrounded one study in 2003. We know that short term HRT is unlikely to be harmful. Any risk of breast cancer, and even then the risk is small, is after five years of HRT. Importantly –for younger women HRT can be used with safety until age 50 then review. Like all medications, HRT should be used for the shortest duration and in as low a dose as possible. In women with complex medical histories a consultation with a medical practitioner with a special interest in menopause and/or gynaecologist may be appropriate.

IS HRT THE ONLY OPTION?HRT is not the only prescription based medication that we prescribe; therefore a

consultation with your GP or gynaecologist is always worthwhile to explore your optionsMany women may choose to review their lifestyles and try other options prior to starting medications

• ExerciseA good programme of weight bearing / resistance exercise is vital for healthy bones.

• DietIf hot flushes are the major problem changes such as cutting out/down smoking, caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods may help.GI dietary foods are known to help menopausal symptoms. It is always useful to look at improving diet e.g. calcium intake, vitamin D, improving omega-3 intake and assessing diet to make it more “heart friendly”.Looking at cotton clothing/bed clothing, electric fans or a Chillow Pillow may help night symptoms.Vaginal lubricants can be used by women where appropriate; there a number of specific ones available in pharmacies. Some women explore non-prescription options such as Red Clover or Black Cohosh.

KEY POINTS• Menopause affects all women and a third of your life is yet to come!• It is a time window of opportunity to consider health and lifestyle changes• Younger women who go into the menopause need to note that they have specific health issues to address• HRT is not always necessary nor appropriate but it can be beneficial to many women• Alternatives to HRT are out thereHelpful Resource: www.menopausematters.co.uk

The lifestyle magazine for KerryConneCt | Motoring

Despite the growing popularity of Electric cars I’ve never been convinced – they were a gimmick, needing years of R&D before they could become a genuine option for motorists. In spite of this I jumped at the chance to test out a Renault Zoe for a week – hoping to prove that electric wasn’t for me. Sitting into the Zoe is just like sitting into any other small car, albeit whiter and more futuristic looking. Press the start button and the dashboard lights up but following a few welcome beeps the silence is deafening. Once I got out on the road the acceleration was impressive

(the Zoe has 220NM torque), overtaking was done with ease -with a little whirring sound like a washing machine on spin cycle - and the handling was just as good as any other car of its size. With no VRT to pay and SEAI grants available the

Zoe costs from €17,490 and battery rental starts from €49/month (depending on mileage). The cost per charge will vary according to your electricity rates but public charge points are currently free. With a range of 210km on the Zoe the real issue with electric vehicles seems to be our infrastructure – charge points are few and far between and if you are lucky enough to find one you’d better hope it is working and that someone else hasn’t parked their diesel car in the way. While I might not be ready to give up my petrol guzzler just yet the Zoe boasts impressive running costs and is environmentally friendly. It would make an ideal second car for those trips in and out of town – keep in mind if you purchase an electric car you’ll get a home charge point, subject to terms and conditions, which will ensure your car is always ready to go.
