NOW YOU KNOW Antoine Dominique “Fats” Domino The youngest of eight children, Antoine Dominique Domino was born into a French Creole family in the lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana. He taught himself to play the piano by listening to the family’s records. His style was reminiscent to that of Fats Waller and partly the reason for his nickname. The other reason was because of his size. Dropping out of school at age 14, Domino worked a factory job, playing bars at night to supplement his income until he scored his first single on the Imperial label entitled The Fat Man in 1949. The song did not make the top 40, but was a huge R&B hit, establishing his sound and image. And the hits kept coming: Blueberry Hill, Ain’t That A Shame, Im Walkin’, Blue Monday — Domino scored nine gold singles although he never had a No. 1 record on the pop charts. He sold 65 million singles during the 1950’s and 1960’s and was rumored to have earned $10,000 per week while on tour. He is considered second only to Elvis Presley as a commercial force— charting 63 times on the pop charts and 59 times on the R&B charts. Domino outsold Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry and is considered one of the architects of rock ‘n’ roll music. Between touring and recording, he was a family man—he and his wife Rosemary had eight Children. His music influenced artists the likes of Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Dr. John, Tom Petty, Harry Connick Jr. and others. His last top 10 hit, Walking to New Orleans was released in 1960. Domino left Imperial Records soon after. Surprisingly, off-stage Domino was described as a shy, reclusive man— declining an offer from President Bill Clinton to perform at the White House. Domino continued to tour for decades but was a life-long resident of New Orleans. In 2005, Domino’s residence was flooded during Hurricane Katrina. Reports first listed him as missing, but he, his wife and one of their children were rescued. They lost most of their possessions in the storm, including almost all of his gold records. President George W. Bush personally delivered a replacement National Medal of Arts to Domino in August 2006. Working through tragedy, he released Alive & Kickin’ in 2007 with new material to critical acclaim.
