We explore together what that means, and the frameworks and practices found in Jewish wisdom to help us on our way. In July, we meet at the end of Tisha B’Av, a traditional fast day commemorating the destruction of the Temples in Jerusalem. One famous story reflects on the role that harmful words played in that destruction. We will explore Jewish ethics of speech, and mindfulness practices that help us to guard our tongues. In August, we find ourselves in the Jewish month of Elul, preparing for the High Holy Days. We’ll explore both the riches to be found, and the struggles that many of us have, with the images and concepts of this season of teshuvah (return). RSVP to [email protected] for either of these gatherings, or to be added to the mailing list for future monthly Spiritual Journey Group programs.

we move into the summer months, many of the children in our congregation will be

heading off for a very special com-munity experience — summer camp. Some of their life-long friends will be made at these camps. Some will gain a deeper understanding and love of Jewish tradition, val-ues, and community through their camp experiences. Others will gain new confidence as they try new things, reach new levels of skill in their favorite sports, science, dance, drama, or other specialized activ-ity. Our URJ camps, Eisner and Crane Lake, provide connections to Reform Jews across the region, with Youth Group programs and NFTY dances, weekends, and leadership training programs building on these foundational Jewish experiences that our movement provides.

Some of the adults in our commu-nity may look back longingly at sum-mer camp experiences they had and loved in their youth, remembering them as formative times in their lives and profoundly influencing their

sense of self, and, if it was a Jewish camp, their sense of Jewish identity. But meaningful Jewish experi-ence during the summer months doesn’t only take place while making havdalah by a lake at summer camp. Meaningful and pleasurable Jewish community can be found almost anywhere you might be headed this summer.

If you are headed to the Berk-shires, the Chevrah community in Great Barrington is a vibrant hub during the Tanglewood and Jacob’s Pillow festivals. There are several communities on the Cape, such as the Cape Cod Synagogue in Hyan-nis. In Concord, NH, you’ll find Temple Beth Jacob warm and inti-mate. In Vermont, the Woodstock community gathers in a charming synagogue, with outdoor services too. And you will find Reform con-gregations in Bangor, Portland, and Augusta, ME. And that’s just a sam-ple of what you can find in New Eng-land. Traveling provides a wonder-ful opportunity to sample another community, experience Shabbat in a different way, and to bring back

the best of what you see as ideas to share here at B’nai Shalom. You can search for Reform congrega-tions and their programs at http:// congregations.urj.org.

Here at B’nai Shalom, we con-tinue to gather every Shabbat throughout the summer. The pace is more relaxed and informal, but we continue to experiment with our last Shabbat of the month in our Ritual Lab, read Torah on the third Shabbat of the month, and offer our new format for the first Shab-bat of the month. Shabbat Rishon now starts at 6:45 pm, with a special, separate activity for children in 3rd grade or younger part-way through the service. The first one in June was a big hit with our youth and adults alike. Our August Shabbat Rishon will include a community dinner for everyone from 5:45 pm onward.

From the Rabbi’s Study — Creating Community all Summer long

From the President — Supporting our Community Financially

nancing the work of a holy community has been a subject of discussion since the first Tabernacle was built.

In biblical times, the Levites (priests) were paid through a system of tithing of flocks and crops. Your support for our community takes a different form today, but it is no less important.

B’nai Shalom’s annual operating budget is approximately $1.1 mil-lion dollars. Our goal is to end the year with a balanced budget. A basic overview of the budget is as follows:

On the Income side: •86% of our funding comes from

annual membership contributions and religious school tuition.

•Fundraising from all sources accounts for 5.6%.

•Grants from the Jewish Federation of Central Massachusetts account for 2%. The Federation is our single largest donor. Their ability to continue to fund these grants is predicated on a successful annual campaign, including donations from our community. I hope that you

will respond as generously as you are able to Fed-eration’s outreach later this fall to help the greater Worcester Jewish community as well as our own congregation.

And now for something completely different…

Beginning in October, our faculty and staff are going to offer what we are calling

“Demo Days!” Parents of students in grades PreK through 6 will be invited, by grade level, to spend one two-hour session with us on a Sunday morning. During the first hour, parents will be observing and experiencing the religious school classroom, interacting with the teachers and receiving an overview of our current educational program. During the second hour, parents will join Rabbi Eiduson and some representatives from our School Committee in conversation. At these sessions, we hope to talk about and hear about your “big picture” goals

for your children’s Jewish learning at Congregation B’nai Shalom. We are going to ask parents to break down all preconceived notions of what “religious school” or “Hebrew school” needs to be and to imagine with us a new vision for your child’s Jewish education in the 21st century.

Once we complete these sessions, likely in the spring of 2014, we plan to convene a group of parents, lay leaders, and teachers to process the data and to create and conduct a written survey of all religious school families about preferences for class timing and how we might expand our use of technology. Finally, we will speak with our current 7th and 8th graders about their own learn-ing experiences — particularly in Hebrew — and listen to what they think needs to improve.

It is our hope that this year-long process will help us to formulate our core beliefs about what Congregation B’nai Shalom’s PreK–6 learning community needs to achieve, and put us on the path to reconstruct-ing our current program to better meet the needs of our community. It promises to be a wonderful and enlightening journey, and I do hope you will plan to participate as much as your time and schedule allows. Have a wonderful summer, and I look forward to greeting you and your children in the New Year.

Brotherhood Events

As a new year is getting underway at Congregation B’nai Shalom, the men of Brotherhood are preparing for what promises to be an excit-ing and event-filled year, with an emphasis on community service projects and opportunities for social connection. Some of the activities we are planning include:•Café Shalom in the temple lobby,

every Sunday morning during Reli-gious School. Enjoy coffee, bagels, muffins, and more, as you read the Sunday papers, catch up with friends, or surf the web on our free wifi. We’ll be looking for volunteers to help with a shift or two for this important community service.

•Brotherhood breakfasts on a nearly regular basis; come enjoy bagels and lox while you meet some new faces or renew old acquaintances. Break-fasts are included with your $36 paid membership.

•Bowling nights — we hope to make this a regular activity throughout the year.

•One or two family outings, place and time to be determined.

•Softball league in the spring? If enough men are interested, we’ll make it happen.

•Community service projects, such as volunteering at Mitzvah Day, serving meals to those in need, and more.

•End of school community BBQ in May, an annual tradition.

Brotherhood is open to all men of any affiliation. For more informa-tion and membership forms, please visit www.cbnaishalom.org/programs/brotherhood.php, or contact:

Jim Wilner, [email protected] Winter, [email protected]

Sisterhood Happenings

Sisterhood has had a very productive year. If you haven’t already done so, please remember to join us or renew your membership. It can be done as you renew your temple membership or by printing out the form found on the temple’s website under Programs/Sisterhood/MembershipForm.

We have completed our fifth year of coordinating the Oneg Shab-bat. We are very appreciative of our hosts and sponsors who have helped enhance Shabbat each week with delicious and attractive refresh-ments, and opportunities to meet

and greet new and old friends. It is our pleasure to “captain” so our con-gregants will navigate all the steps of hosting with ease. Anyone willing to assist with “captaining” even a few times in the coming year will be doing a real mitzvah. It is an easy and wonderful way to meet other congregants.

We will once again be coordi-nating the 2nd day Rosh Hashanah luncheon on September 6, and the Annual Break-the-Fast following the N’eliah Service on Yom Kippur on September 14. Please plan to cele-brate the High Holy Days with your

congregational family by attending one or both with your family and friends. Volunteering with set up will be terrific.

Watch the September bulletin for details about our October paid-up membership event and upcoming book group selections.

See you at onegs this summer! Janice [email protected] [email protected]

Scrip ProgramThe basic concept of Scrip is simple. B’nai Shalom is able to purchase gift cards at a discount for hundreds of different stores and restaurants — many of which you already shop or dine at. Since the gift cards are sold at face value, you are able to spend the money you would already be spending, and B’nai Shalom gains the value of the discount. The office maintains some scrip in stock. Other scrip must to be ordered and paid for in advance. Forms can be found in the office and online. We can accept credit cards as well, but prefer check or cash. It is easy, but it does take a little planning. For more information, contact Abby Mayou, Temple Administrator.

Sing With Shir JoyRehearsals Begin September 22

Shir Joy (Joy of Song) is an adult Jewish chorus that began three years ago. It is composed of people who live in Central Massachusetts. Supported by grants from Jewish Federation of Central Massachu-setts and the Westborough Cultural Council, we sing every Sunday night from 7–9 pm at B’nai Shalom. Under the direction of Jonathan Rappaport, we sing a variety of music, ranging from classic pieces to contemporary. We perform several concerts throughout the region each year. Chorus members do not need to be Jewish or belong to any religious organization to sing with us. Ability to keep in tune with your neighboring singers is crucial, but you do not have to read music. Want to learn more? Go to shirjoyMA.com or e-mail [email protected].

Mitzvah Day

Additional Thanks

A belated thank you to the volunteers who created beautiful necklaces for Whitney Place resi-dents, and to the “Knitzvah Day” volunteers who spent months prior to Mitzvah Day knitting many squares which they joined together on Mitzvah Day to create beautiful afghans for infants. They are already getting ready to begin their knitting for Mitzvah Day 2014.

We are also scheduled for Wednesday, October 2, and Wednes-day, December 25. Please mark your

Member Activities

Do you know of a Manageable Mitzvah Opportunity? In our online survey last month, we learned that many of you are involved in volunteer activities, and

many others would like to be involved in actions that are time-limited and, well…manageable within your busy schedules. Let’s put the two together! If you know of any opportunities for limited but meaningful engagementwithacharity, school, shelter, facilityfortheelderlyorinfirm, oranyotherappropriate

…continued from page 3 From the Rabbi’s Study — A Year in Review

While we love to see our com-munity continue to come together to celebrate Shabbat throughout the summer, we’re also breaking out of the sanctuary for several other special community social gatherings. Suri and I would love to see you at our ‘sing out’ sing-along and after-noon tea at our home on July 14. On July 28, you’ll find us down at Hopkinton State Park for our annual picnic by the boathouse. And we’ll finish out the season and welcome

in the ever-so-early High Holy Day season with another invite to our home for a pot-luck and BBQ on August 31, followed by a Selichot study session. See further details on pages 1 and 7 of this Bulletin.

So whether home or away, let’s not leave meaningful Jewish sum-mer community to Jewish summer camps only. I’d love to see you over the summer, whether at one of the events above, or simply to stop in and say ‘hi’ as you are passing.

Wishing you all a wonderful Summer!

Rabbi Rachel Gurevitz

On the Expense side:•78% of our expenses are salaries,

building, administration, and reli-gious education expenses.

•20% of our expense is our mort-gage. Our mortgage was recently re-negotiated at a lower interest rate. We took the opportunity to prepay some of the principal from our cash reserves to help reduce pressure on future budgets.

What these numbers do not include:•temporary restricted funds, which

are included in our balance sheet, but not our operating budget. The funds are listed in the Bulletin.

•capital expenses, which is a par-ticularly important item this year — we need to put a new roof over the school wing this summer

(the preliminary estimate is about $75,000), and our Security Task force is developing recommenda-tions to help make our building more secure for us all.

At our June Board of Directors meeting, Iris Kraus (Treasurer) and Katheleen Schaker (Director) were appointed to fill open positions. I want to thank them both for agree-ing to serve in these capacities. I look forward to working with our entire Board again this year.

Many students and their families think they know what colleges to target, but end up making decisions that ultimately fall short of expectations. This is often because they haven’t approached the application process effectively by positioning students for successful results at schools best suited for their strengths. The college application process is lengthy, time consuming, and confusing. It takes a lot of effort and energy, and hours of coordination and planning. This can be very difficult and stressful for both students and parents, leaving everyone less than excited about college applications. This is where Pathway College Consulting comes in! Let Rebekah help make this a fun, stress-free, exciting, and successful process for you. You can reach her at 508-839-6967 or 508-320-2649 (cell) or [email protected].
