In the News I wanted to pass on a wonderful teaching resource that our Media Center aide found for me
last year: www.epals.com. I must give credit to Sabina Harper at Hornsby K-8 for finding this site for me. Epals is an e-mail pen pal service that will match foreign language classes in native language countries. The teachers can receive all of the mail that is sent and received before the students see it. We had an interesting partnership with a middle school class near Grenoble, France last year. It really made the language and the culture come alive for the students.
Another fun site for foreign language vocabulary drilling is www.quizlet.com. This site will give suggestions for English to L2 translation, but you will probably want to give your own definitions. The very cool part of this program is that it will say the word in the foreign language! The French and Spanish pronunciations are excellent (even entire sentences are well pronounced!). I think that Ms.
Harper (native German speaker) said that the German was o.k. too. It will even give or print
vocabulary quizzes. Julia Key (Hornsby Elementary School)
Wendy Cleveland (Episcopal Day School) coordinates a mission in Panama, “Visions of Music Int., Inc.” If you are interesting in assisting, please check out the web page at www.thepanamamission.org and contact Wendy at [email protected].
Señorita Latina Contest
If you have students who might be interested in participating in the Señorita Latina Contest sponsored by the Asociación Cultural Hispanoamericana (ACHA), contact Edwin Pérez at [email protected].
Certificates of Merit for Middle Schoolers For the eighth year, FLAIR offered Certificates of Merit to middle school students who have maintained an A average for a year and a half of foreign language study. We hope they will join the FLAIR Honor Society when they reach high school.
