January/February 2019 Highlighting the News & Events at Showell Elementary School
Mrs. Angela Rankin is Showell Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year for the 2018-19 school year. Mrs.
Rankin is a graduate of Salisbury University. She has been an early childhood teacher for 8 years.
Currently, Mrs. Rankin is a first grade teacher. She is always willing to assume duties outside of her role as
a classroom teacher by helping to publish the school’s yearbook and representing our school in the
Worcester County Educational Foundation.
Mrs. Rankin is a loving teacher who seeks to provide a safe, welcoming environment for her students. She
values building positive relationships and connections with all of her students. She is also committed to
professional growth so that her students can be exposed the best practices in instruction.
We congratulate Mrs. Rankin on being our Teacher of the Year. We wish her all the best as she seeks to
become the 2019 Worcester County Teacher of the Year.
Congratulations Mrs. Rankin, SES Teacher of the Year!

WILLET BILLS AT HOME
There are lots of ways to encourage better
behavior at home - keeping a chart on the
refrigerator (your child earns checks or
stickers for good behavior and earns a reward
when he/she receives a certain number of
stickers) or putting marbles in a jar (your child puts a marble in
the jar for good behavior each day and a reward is earned once
the jar is full).
Another idea for you to consider is using Willet Bills at home.
Create your own and call them anything you wish. Have a talk with
the kids about your expectations. Keep a stack of ‘bills’ nearby,
and when you see your child doing something you like, give out a
‘bill.’ Before you begin, decide what your child can purchase with
his/her bills ---- a t.v. show, video game, game with mom or dad,
special dinner or desert. It doesn’t have to cost money.
If you are interested in using your version of Willet Bills and
have questions, feel free to call me.

Kindergarten has been very
busy learning about folktales
such as The Mitten by Jan
Brett. Our students have
enjoyed listening and
discussing this type of text
during the past few weeks.
Kindergarten has also been
working hard on what it means to
be a good friend to others. We
have practiced random acts of
kindness by using kind words and
actions with our peers and
teachers daily. February is dental
health month so Kindergarten will
be visited by a dentist! Ask your
child about what they learn from
the dentist about keeping their
teeth healthy and clean!

First Grade read The Polar Express in December before our holiday
break. We celebrated the end of a reading unit by drinking hot cocoa,
wearing our pajamas, and watching The Polar Express movie. To conclude
our reading unit, we compared and contrasted the book and the movie.
We discussed the similarities and differences between the characters,
setting, events and plot. The students enjoyed our Polar Express day and
had a great learning experience.

about polar bears and their habitats. They
have explored multiple informational texts
to gather facts about their lives in the
Arctic and how they are vulnerable to
becoming endangered. The students will be
creating digital presentations to
demonstrate their understanding of how the
changing environment of polar bears affects
their way of life in the Arctic.

Read Alouds by 3rd Grade If you have a third grader in the house, you might have heard mention of an
easy going gorilla named Ivan or an adorable dog named Winn-Dixie. That is
because all third grade classes have fallen in LOVE with Read Alouds.
You might be asking yourself, “What is a Read Aloud?” Well, it’s exactly
what you would expect. We sit in a circle and read some AMAZING books.
During our reading time we teach skills, introduce vocabulary, model fluent
reading, and of course develop a love of reading. In the Read Alouds,
students learn to think deeper using skills such as prediction, character
development, and theme. They stay active as they are asked to Stop and
Jot, Turn and Talk, and participate in Grand Conversations.
Listen to what several students had to say about participating in Read
Alouds:
“I like Read Alouds because I can imagine the pictures while the teacher is
reading the book.” Sophie Halloran-Mrs. Snyder
“I really like Grand Conversations because you can share your answers with
your classmates. Sometimes people agree or disagree with you.” Jason
Ryan-Mr. Johnson
“I like Read Alouds because it is a relaxing break after you have been
working all day.” Serenity Donelson-Mrs. Kolankowski
“I like Read Alouds because I like talking to people about books.” Joey
Brune-Mrs. Dyda
“I enjoy Read Alouds because our class is reading a book about a dog and I
love dogs.” Ruthie Alban-Mrs. Thompson
“I like Read Alouds because I can relax and listen to my teacher. My
favorite part is the Turn and Talk.” Danny Shanahan-Ms. Davidson
“I like Read Alouds because if we have questions we can turn and talk to our partner about it.”
Caroline Cathell-Mrs. Johnson
Do you remember learning to use scissors? Mrs. Winters’ PreK-3 class cut lots and lots of lines on a
paper to use their scissor skills. Scissor skills are important
because the opening and closing motion of cutting with
scissors helps children develop the small muscles in their
hands. These fine motor skills are crucial for holding a
pencil or crayons and gripping and manipulating objects.

Afterschool Paint It! Club has been working on two collaborative
murals. Students have been tracing lids
and other household objects to create
abstract shapes. Once the shapes have
been created, students paint the
sections in with acrylic paint. Each class,
the students continue adding to the mural. The club is
hoping to display this artwork somewhere in the school
once it is completed.
