What is Confucianism?

• the way of life propagated by Confucius in the 6th–5th century BC and followed by the Chinese people for more than two millennia.

• the substance of learning, the source of values, and the social code of the Chinese

• other countries, particularly Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.

What is Confucianism?

• It is a complete ideological system created by Confucius based on the traditional culture of Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties.

What is the life of Confucius

• Great educationist, thinker, and unsuccessful politician

• He pursued truth, kindness and perfection throughout his life

• His father dies when he was very young (15 yrs old)

• Dedicate to study• Patriotism was his driving force

• He gained some fame 30 y/o• At 51 y/o his life assumed of great importance

(political career 4 years)• His career as a teacher and philosopher was full

of achievements.• Approach to education is avante garde• Confucius principle concerning study: “studying

without thinking leads to confusion; thinking w/o studying leads to laziness.”

What is Confucianism

• An ideology mainly in China• Teaches the importance of attaining personal

salvation through right action• High morals, ethical conduct, and loyalty to others

is central in Confucianism• Three key teachings of Confucianism – loyalty,

reciprocal obligations, and honesty – may all lead to a lowering of the cost of doing business in Confucian societies.

• A part of world cultural heritage and an integral part of Chinese life

According to Confucius there are 5 Constant Virtues

1. Humanity2. Righteousness3. Propriety4. Wisdom5. Faithfulness

Confucius further defined 5 basic human relationships and principles for each relationship called WU LUN

1. Sovereign and subject: loyalty and duty (or master and follower)2. father and son love and obedience3. Husband and wife obligation and submission4. Elder and younger seniority and brothers modelling subject5. Friend and friend trust

Among the 5 there are 3 Family Relationships which clearly shows

importance of family and account for paternalism

Relationships

• Relationships are structured to deliver optimum benefits for both parties

• For each relationship, certain behavior principles must be followed to ensure harmonious society

• These practice was the result of Li and JenLi refers to the rule of propriety which structures interpersonal relationships into hierarchical dualities. Individual have to orient their behavior to those interpersonal relations and not change their role system in the evironment.Jen the core Confucius concept, means one’s unselfishness and ability to measure other people’s feelings by one’s own “goodness”. It indicates the virtue of attaining benevolent relationship between man and his followers.
