How to Use This Supplement

The preparation for Confirmation is a grace-filled time. Preparing for

Confirmation will assist you in using Faith First® Legacy Edition / School

Grade 6 to prepare students for receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Preparing for Confirmation focuses on three chapters in Faith First Legacy

Edition / School Grade 6. These chapters present concepts that are an

essential part of a sound catechesis for sacramental preparation for

Confirmation. Chapter 1 and chapter 7 are suggested to be used as part of the

long-range preparation for the celebration of Confirmation. Chapter 13, which

has been divided into three lessons, is suggested to be taught immediately prior

to the celebration of the sacrament. A Confirmation retreat program is also

included.

Preparing for Confirmation is simple, clear, and easy to use. The supplement

consists of two two-page spreads for presenting each of the chapters. On the

first page for each lesson you will find a brief explanation that places the

chapter in the context of preparation for Confirmation. This page contains

both a brief background essay, which contextualizes the lesson within the

Confirmation preparation process, and a list of helpful resources that can be

used to enrich the teaching of the lesson.

The second page of the lesson plan is a step-by-step process for teaching the

lesson. This lesson plan contains materials not included in the Faith First

Legacy Edition / School Grade 6 Teacher Guide and focuses the

presentation of the lesson as part of the sacramental preparation process. The

third and fourth pages of chapter 1 and chapter 7 are reproducible handouts.

These contain activities that will help the students apply and integrate the faith

themes of the lesson into their daily living. The three sessions of chapter 13

each contain a reproducible activity and a closing prayer celebration.

The final section of this supplement contains a suggested plan for a

Confirmation retreat. The plan can be used for a full-day retreat or adapted to

be used in a shorter time period.

Preparing for ConfirmationFaith is both God’s invitation to believe and trust in God—theFather, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—and our response to that divineinvitation. The story of a Christian’s life gives witness to that divineinvitation and our response to it.

Chapter 1 of Faith First Legacy Edition / School Grade 6provides you and the young people and their families with theopportunity to reflect on the faith journey begun at Baptism. Thischapter invites the young people to reread and reflect upon thepromises made at Baptism. It then calls the young people to takegreater personal responsibility for those promises, which were firstmade at their Baptism in their name by their parents andgodparents.

At Baptism the young people were marked with the sign of thecross and claimed for Christ. The cross is the symbol of Christ’slove for the Father and for all people. During your presentation of this chapter you might wish to include a rite of signing with thecross similar to the one that is found in the “Rite of Acceptanceinto the Order of Catechumens” of the Rite of Christian Initiation ofAdults (RCIA). Including such a rite in your presentation of thischapter will celebrate your students’ intention to complete thecelebration of their initiation into the Catholic Church.

Chapter 1 Lesson PlanBefore teaching this chapter,carefully read the “ChapterBackground” and “Lesson Planner”on pages 52–54 of the teacherguide (TG).

Day 1

• Teach the lesson plan outlined inthe teacher guide.

• Direct the students’ attention tothe cover of the text. Discussthe significance of the symbol onthe cover. Summarize byexplaining that the symbol is theChi Rho. It is composed of thetwo Greek letters, chi (X) = chand rho (P) = r, that representthe first two letters in Christ’sname in Greek.

• Remind the students that attheir Baptism, the celebrant (thepriest or deacon), their parents,and their godparents traced asign of the cross on theirforehead. Point out that this wasa sign of their being welcomedinto the Church and claimed asbelonging to Christ.

• Point out to the students that as candidates preparing for Con fir ma tion they have theresponsibility and opportunity to cooperate with God’s graceto deepen their rela tionship withthe Holy Trinity.

• After teaching page 15 in thestudent book, divide the classinto four groups and assign oneof the four activities listed belowto each group. Explain thatdoing the activities can help uscome to know God better.—Group 1: Compose a prayer

to the Holy Spirit.—Group 2: Select one Old

Testament passage thatreveals something about God.

—Group 3: Select one Gospelpassage in which Jesus teachesabout God.

—Group 4: List five teachings of the Catholic Church thatguide us in living as children of God.

• Allow sufficient time for thegroups to complete theassignment and present theirwork to the entire class.

• Distribute copies of the work -sheet on page 6 of thissupple ment and have the candi -dates work on it independently.Ask the students to relate howtheir reception of the Sacra -ments and the work of theparish have helped them in theirjourney of faith.

• Have the students turn to page388 in their texts and comparethe Apostles’ Creed with theNicene Creed.

Day 4

• Teach the lesson plan outlined inthe teacher guide.

• Emphasize that sharing faith withpeers, parents, sponsors, andother significant people is animportant aspect of thecandidates’ preparation forConfirmation.

• Have the students discuss howeasy or difficult they find it totalk about the Catholic faith withothers. Acknowledge that itsometimes takes courage toshare one’s faith. Point out thatcourage is one of the seven Giftsof the Holy Spirit.

• Help the students recognize thattheir loving and respectful wordsand actions speak powerfullyabout their faith in Christ.

Day 5

• Teach the lesson plan outlined inthe teacher guide.

• Tell the students that when theywere baptized, their parents andgodparents renewed their ownbaptismal promises.

• Emphasize with the candidatesthat when they are confirmed,they will renew their baptismalpromises. They will reject sin,profess their faith in Christ, andcommit themselves to live andgive witness to the faith of theChurch.

• Distribute copies of theworksheet on page 7 of thissupplement and have thecandidates work on it inde -pendently. After they com pletethe activity, invite volunteers todiscuss the consequences oftheir courageously living asfollowers of Christ.

• Summarize the candidates’responses by pointing out thatthe Holy Spirit dwells within theChurch and within each memberof the Church, which includesthem. Emphasize that the HolySpirit will help them live asfaithful members of the CatholicChurch.

• Remind the students to sharethe “With My Family” page intheir text with their families.

your friends CONFIRM that they will come to your birthday party, you know

that they will be there to celebrate. List examples of events that you might

be invited to participate in. Choose one and describe why it is important

Preparing for ConfirmationSaint Paul the Apostle summarizes the Church’s faith in the work ofthe Holy Spirit. Paul writes: “I want you to understand . . . no onecan say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians12:3). Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would always be with theChurch as her helper, guide, and teacher. (See John 14:16–18,26–27; Acts of the Apostles 1:8, 2:1–47.)

Each year Christians celebrate the solemnity of Pentecost. On thatday we remember and celebrate the birth of the Church. Weremember that the disciples, filled with the gift of the Holy Spirit,proclaimed the Gospel with such enthusiasm (a word from theGreek meaning “inspired, or filled with spirit”) that over threethousand people repented and were baptized. We celebrate andprofess our faith in the same Holy Spirit’s active presence in the lifeof the Church today.

As you present Faith First Legacy Edition / School Grade 6,chapter 7, help the students preparing for Confirmation discoverand deepen their faith in the Church, the temple of the Holy Spirit.The Holy Spirit is the source of the Church’s life and unity, her giftsand charisms. (See Catechism of the Catholic Church 797–801.) Remindthe students that they have been gifted and empowered with theHoly Spirit. They are to join with the Church in building a world onthe gospel values of “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity,faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22–23).

Chapter 7 Lesson PlanBefore teaching this chapter,carefully read the “ChapterBackground” and “Lesson Planner”on pages 148–150 of the teacherguide (TG).

Day 1

• Teach the lesson plan outlined inthe teacher guide.

• Note that fire (the flames of thelighted candles) is one image ofthe Holy Spirit depicted in thephotograph on page 85 in theirtext.

• Ask the students to name otherimages for the Holy Spirit usedby the writers of the Bible. (You will find biblical titles andsymbols representing the HolySpirit to share with the class inthe Catechism of the CatholicChurch in paragraphs 692–701.)

• Remind the students thatthrough Baptism they werejoined to Christ and receivedthe gift of the Holy Spirit atBaptism.

• Ask the students to close theireyes and imagine they areamong the disciples onPentecost. Read Acts of theApostles 2:1–4 on page 86. Afterreading the passage, pause andthen invite the students to sharewhat they thought and how theyfelt when the room becamefilled with wind as the HolySpirit descended on thedisciples.

• Distribute copies of theworksheet on page 10 of thissupplement and have the studentscomplete it independently. Allowtime for volunteers to sharetheir responses.

• Summarize the sharing byemphasizing that Spirit-filledpeople are responsive to theHoly Spirit’s presence in theirlives.

• Teach the lesson plan outlined inthe teacher guide.

• Discuss with the class how aparish community is a visible andliving sign of the four Marks ofthe Church—one, holy, catholic,and apostolic. Help the studentsappreciate the different waysyour parish shows its unity,holiness, openness to others,and faithfulness to the teachingsof Christ and the CatholicChurch.

Day 3

• Teach the lesson plan outlined inthe teacher guide.

• Ask the students to explain whatJesus was referring to in John15:13. Through his Crucifixion,Jesus showed his love for allpeople.

Day 4

• Explain to the students that thetitles of encyclicals are usuallytaken from the first few wordsof the encyclical. Point out thatencyclicals are usually written inLatin and then call attention tothe Latin title of the encyclical

on page 92 in their text as anexample, namely, EvangeliumVitae, which means “The Gospelof Life.”

• Invite the students tobrainstorm some of theteachings and advice a Popemight relate if he wrote a letterto all Confirmation candidatesthroughout the world.

Hockey teams that win the Stanley Cup are filled with “spirit” before, during, and after each and every game! The power of a winning team’s spirit electrifies the arena. Describing spirit in words may not be so easy. But we know when it is there— and not there. We can see and feel it. It sets us afire!

“At his baptism by John, Christ himself was anointed by the Spirit and sent out on his public ministry to set the

world on fire” (“Homily or Instruction,” Rite of Confirmation 22). We too are anointed by the Spirit to set the world on fire—by the fire of our love for God and for others.

Preparing for Confirmation: Baptized into New LifeThe Sacrament of Baptism is the doorway to the Christian life.Through Baptism we begin our initiation into the Church, the Bodyof Christ. Confirmation strengthens the graces of Baptism.Celebrating Eucharist renews our baptismal inheritance, nourishesus with the Body and Blood of Christ, joins us most fully to JesusChrist and to one another, and is the pledge of eternal life. (SeeCatechism of the Catholic Church 1275, 1285, 1303, and 1304.)

Baptized with water and the Holy Spirit, we are joined to Christthe Risen Savior and reconciled with God. We become members ofthe Church and are marked forever as belonging to Christ. Wereceive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Both original sin and personal sinsare forgiven in Baptism. We receive the grace to avoid sin and liveas children of God. Through Baptism we enter a permanentrelationship with God. That is why a person can be baptized onlyone time.

This lesson begins the immediate preparation of the young peoplefor the Sacrament of Confirmation. Present this chapter in threesessions, discussing Baptism in this session and Confirmation in thenext two sessions.

• Explain that the study of chapter13 will take place over threeweeks: this week will focus onthe Sacrament of Baptism andthe next two weeks will focuson the Sacrament of Confir -mation.

• As you discuss the photo onpage 163 in the student book,clarify that older children andadults prepare to become mem -bers of the Church through aprocess called the Rite ofChristian Initiation of Adults(RCIA) which culminates forthose who have not beenbaptized in the cele bra tion ofthe three Sacraments ofInitiation, namely, Baptism,Confirmation, and Eucharist atthe Easter Vigil, and for thosewho were already baptized inthe celebration of Confirmationand Eucharist at the Easter Vigil.

• Invite volunteers to share theirexperience of participating in theEaster Vigil or talk about anyonethey know who has been a partof the RCIA.

• As you discuss the “Rite ofBaptism,” emphasize thesignificance of the use of waterin the baptismal rite. Explain thatin Baptism we die to sin and riseto new life in Christ.

Day 2• Begin by praying the Our Father

together. • Review the significance of the

use of water in Baptism. Thenshare with the students theimportance of anointing withChrism, clothing with a whitegarment, and receiving a lightedcandle in the celebration ofBaptism: (1) Anointing withChrism is a sign that the newlybaptized have received the gift of the Holy Spirit and arestrengthened to live their newlife in Christ; (2) Clothing with a new white garment is a signthat they have received new lifein Christ; and (3) Receiving thelighted candle is a sign that theyare to keep their gift of faithalive in this life and that theyhave received the promise ofeternal life.

• Using props you brought toclass, have the students role-playa celebration of Baptism.

• Conclude by reading aloud theprayer that accompanies theanointing with Chrism:

The God of power and Fatherof our Lord Jesus Christ / hasfreed you from sin / andbrought you to new life /through water and the HolySpirit. / He now anoints youwith the chrism of salvation, /so that, united with hispeople, / you may remain forever a member of Christ /who is Priest, Prophet, andKing.

Day 3• Begin by having the candidates

sign themselves with holy water.• Recall the words of the prayer

that accompanies the anointingwith Chrism. Explain that thetitles “Priest,” “Prophet,” and“King” summarize the ministry

of Jesus Christ. Point out thatthe anointing of the newlybaptized is a sign that God haschosen them to continue thework of Christ.

• Distribute copies of theworksheet on page 14 of thissupplement. Have the studentscomplete the activity toreinforce their understandingand appreciation of the role ofthe Holy Spirit in their life.Allow time for the students toshare their completed faithshields with the class.

• Conclude by having the studentsoffer spontaneous prayers askingthe Holy Spirit’s help as theyprepare for Confirmation.

Day 4• Lead the class in praying the

opening prayer on page 163 ofthe text.

• Invite the students to sharestories about their Baptism day.Use the “Teaching Tip” box atthe bottom of TG page 256 forsuggestions.

• Introduce your guest to answerthe candidates’ interviewquestions as suggested in the“Teaching Tip” box at thebottom of TG page 257.

• Conclude by praying togetherfor all those preparing forBaptism in your parish.

from the Faith First Grade 6video, “Story of Faith,” (15minutes). Help the studentsmake the connection between anewly baptized person’sanointing and the responsibilityto use one’s gifts and talents tocontinue the work of Christ.

Preparing for Confirmation: Witnesses for ChristThe New Testament reveals the presence of the Holy Spirit withJesus throughout his life on earth, bringing to fulfillment the missionthe Father entrusted to Jesus. When Jesus announced the nature ofhis mission, he proclaimed: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, /because he has anointed me to . . .” (Luke 4:18).

The essence of the rite of Confirmation is the anointing of thebaptized with chrism on their forehead as the bishop, or priestdelegated by the bishop, simultaneously lays his hand on the head of the one being confirmed, saying, “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit” (Rite of Confirmation 27). The celebration ofConfirmation continues the initiation of the baptized into theChurch. Joined more closely to the Body of Christ, the Church, the baptized are more strictly obliged to spread the faith, both byword and by deed, and to strive to live as true witnesses of JesusChrist. (See Dogmatic Constitution on the Church 11).

This lesson continues the immediate preparation of the young peoplefor the Sacrament of Confirmation, using page 115 of the studentbook, which focuses on the rite and sacramental graces, or effects,of Confirmation.

Preparing for Confirmation: A Lifelong CommitmentGod’s invitation to live a life of faith in communion with him calls usto a lifelong commitment. A life of faith involves the search forunderstanding the meaning of the mysteries of the faith of theChurch. It also involves adopting a way of life. The desire andwillingness of a baptized person to respond to the grace of theHoly Spirit and make such a commitment is an essentialrequirement for receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation.

In Baptism we make promises that we are to live out the rest ofour lives. When the Church baptizes infants, these promises aremade in the infant’s name by their parents and godparents.Thosebaptized as infants renew these promises in their own name duringthe rite of Confirmation. It is important to reread and reflect onthe meaning of these promises and ask: Just what exactly is it thatwe promise at Baptism? How do we resolve to live the GreatCommandment to love God and others as Jesus taught? How willwe find the guidance and strength to reject evil?

How? . . . We are temples of the Holy Spirit. We have been gracedwith the gift of the Holy Spirit, who fills us with the gifts of wisdom,understanding, right judgment, courage, knowledge, reverence, andwonder and awe. Sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit we areempowered to keep our word and fulfill our promises.

Materials Needed

Welcome and GatherGreet each of the participants individually as theyarrive. Provide name tags and brightly coloredmarkers and invite the participants to create anddecorate a name tag that identifies and describesthem.

When everyone has arrived and finished making theirname tags, welcome them. Present a brief overview ofwhat will happen at the retreat. Use these or similarwords to welcome the participants:

I am happy that you are with us at this retreat. Doesanyone know what a retreat is? Retreat comes from aFrench word meaning “to withdraw.” There will besome quiet time and some prayer time, but we will alsobe active in groups. There will be time to get to know alittle more about yourself and to discover ways God isworking in your life now.

We will talk about Confirmation and ways that the Giftsof the Holy Spirit will be an active and vibrant part ofyour life. We will tell some stories. We will hear somepeople tell their stories. And we will do some fun things!

Let’s begin. (Lead the participants in the icebreakeractivity.)

Icebreaker Activity Ask all the participants to sit on chairs, which arearranged to form a large circle. Tell the participantsthat you will make a statement, and if that statementapplies to them, they are to get out of their chair andrush to sit in a different chair on the other side of thecircle.

Use some statements that can apply to some of theparticipants, such as “Everyone with brown eyes.” Use other statements that can apply to all of theparticipants, such as “Everyone who is in the sixthgrade.” Use some fun statements that will get theparticipants laughing, such as “Everyone who has apiece of useless junk in their pocket.”

After you make the first few statements (and theparticipants get the idea of how the game is played),remove one of the chairs. This will leave oneparticipant without a chair to sit on. Have that personstand in the middle of the circle, make the nextstatement, and run to find a chair when others move.Remember that not all participants will move witheach statement. Conclude the activity by saying,“Everyone who is preparing for Confirmation.” (Besure at this time to replace the chair that youremoved.)

All the participants should now be sitting on differentchairs than the ones they were sitting on when theyfirst arrived. Allow a few minutes for the participantsto chat and laugh about the activity and to begin tosettle down a bit.

Summarize, saying these or similar words:

That was a fun way to discover how each of us isdifferent from one another, but each of us also has onevery important thing in common with one another: Eachof us has been blessed by and created by God in hisimage and likeness.

Story

Have the participants sit comfortably as you tell thisstory.

There was a young boy named Gianni who lived in asmall village nestled in the mountains of northern Italy.Tucked into the hills were rock quarries containingmarble. Every day Gianni would walk to school, windinghis way through the narrow streets of the village past allthe stores and shops and houses. On his way home, healways paused and spent some time at the workshop ofGiuseppi the sculptor. It was fun to watch him work ashe used his hammers and chisels. Gianni was especiallyexcited one day when a large block of glistening whitemarble appeared in Giuseppi’s workshop. Every day,Gianni would rush out of school to stand at the door ofGiuseppi’s workshop. Gianni watched curiously as theblock of marble slowly changed its shape. Then one daywhen Gianni gazed into the workshop, there it was,looking straight at him—a huge statue of a lion. Hewas amazed and turned to Giuseppi and asked, “Howdid you find the lion in that big piece of marble?”“Easy,” responded Guiseppi. “I simply chipped awayeverything that was not the lion.”

Connection Discuss the story with the participants. Use these orsimilar points:

1. You cannot always tell who a person is or what aperson is like by merely looking at the person’soutside. Looking beyond the outside of a person(chipping away at the marble) can help us discoverwho a person really is.

2. Each person has strengths and weaknesses.

3. Growing as a responsible Christian includesdiscovering our qualities, developing those qualities,and using them to live our faith. God works in usand through us to build on the gifts that each of ushas been given.

Explain that at this retreat today, we are going tospend some time reflecting on the gifts that God hasgiven us. The challenge now is to work with the Spiritand develop our gifts. Let’s begin by identifying thosepositive qualities that are important for a person to have.

Group Activity Introduce the group activity by asking the participantsto talk about people they respect and admire. Usethese or similar words:

All of you know people you respect and admire. Who issomeone you look up to? Who are some well-knownpeople you look up to? What other people do you lookup to? Which saints do you look up to? Think aboutwhy you look up to these people. Think about some ofthe qualities these people possess that you admire. Talkabout some of the positive qualities that these peoplepossess.

Divide the participants into groups of four or five. Haveeach group brainstorm and list on a sheet of newsprintat least five qualities they look for in persons theyadmire. Then have the group choose and circle thethree most important qualities on this list.

Gather the whole group together. Discuss and sharethe top three qualities circled from the list made bythe individual groups. From this discussion have all theparticipants decide on the five most important qualitiesfor them as a group. Write these on a sheet of newsprint.

Presentation: The Gifts of the Holy Spirit Use these or similar words to begin a discussion ofthe Gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Together, we have identified qualities that we look forand admire in other people. How do we discover thatsomeone has one or more of these gifts? It is becausewe see people using their gifts. We cannot see wisdom,but we can see the ways that people act wisely.

We too are called to develop our gifts in the same wayas the people in the parable of the talents. Three peoplereceived gifts and were accountable for their gifts totheir master. We must develop our gifts and talents.The Holy Spirit dwelling within us helps us do this.

Give a copy of the handout on page 27 to eachparticipant. Discuss and explain the seven Gifts of theHoly Spirit. Allow time for the participants to quietlyreflect on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit and to respondto the questions.

ActivityHave the participants create a skit that depicts peopletheir age using the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Formseven groups and assign one of the Gifts of the HolySpirit to each of the seven groups. Encourage theparticipants to role-play a situation that portrays theuse of the gift of the Holy Spirit assigned to theirgroup.

Personal Witness to the Gifts of the SpiritOne aspect of the Church’s life is the faithful living oftheir Baptism by sharing their gifts. Illustrate a situationof someone giving witness to Christ by sharing theirgifts. This could be done in several ways. For example:

1. Invite one or several of the group leaders of theretreat day to share their reflections on what theHoly Spirit means to them.

2. View and discuss a video that shows how peopleuse the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in their lives.

3. Invite the participants to role-play the story ofsome of the people who are important in thehistory of the Church in Canada

Activity: Identifying Your GiftsInvolve participants in an activity that will help themidentify the gifts that others see in them and the giftsthat they see in themselves. Have them write a letterthat will be used in the closing prayer celebration,thanking God for these gifts.

—Tape a cutout copy of the flame from thehandout on page 30 to each participant’s back.

—Tell all the participants to walk around the roomand write on each other’s flame a positive qualitythat they see in that person.

—After sufficient time, have the participants sitdown in a comfortable position and take the listof positive qualities from their backs. Let themread the list.

—Play some appropriate music for reflection. Inviteeach participant to reflect on what these giftsand qualities mean to them.

—Distribute letter paper and envelopes and invitethe participants to write a letter to God. Thisletter should include three parts: naming some oftheir gifts, thanking God for their gifts, and tellingways in which they will use these gifts.

—When everyone has written the letter, tell theparticipants that they will offer their letter toGod during the closing prayer.

Closing Prayer Celebration Gather the participants for prayer. Play a recording ofreflective music to help the participants focus. On theprayer table place an open Bible, a candle, and abasket.

Leader: Let us spend a few minutes quietly reflecting onthe words of Jesus and the meaning of thosewords for our lives. Think about all that we didtogether at this retreat, and reflect on ways thatyou can be lights to the world.

After some time for quiet reflection, continue playingmusic and invite the participants to bring the letterthat they wrote to God and reverently place it in thebasket. When all the participants have placed theirletter in the basket, invite everyone to sing.
