    PIZARRO, FRANCISCO (14711541) The man who led the Spanish conquest of the Incas in 1533.

    PRECOLUMBIAN Refers to the time before Columbus arrived in the New World.

    PTOLEMY (tallohme) An astronomer, mathematician, and geographer w ho lived in the second centu ry A.D. in Alexan-

    dr ia, Egypt. In the 1400s, his map of the w orld w as considered the best there was.

    QUADRANT An instrument u sed in navigation for determining the altitud es of heavenly bodies.

    RENAISSANCE (renissonce) The p eriod in the h istory of Europe that follows the Midd le Ages (the Med ieval era).

    The Renaissance was a rebirth of interest in art an d science that began in different coun tries at different times after

    abou t 1400. Both the Age of Exploration and the Protestant Reformation began du ring the Renaissance.

    SAN SALVADOR The name Colum bus gave to the island in the present day Baham as on wh ich he landed on October

    12, 1492.

    SOTO, HERNANDO DE (150042) Served as second in comm and un der Pizzar o du ring the Inca conquest. (DeSoto

    actually sup ported th e Inca emp eror Atahualpa w hom Pizarro had h anged.) DeSoto went on to explore the Southeastern

    region of todays United States and is credited with being th e European discoverer of the Mississippi River.

    SEXTANT A navigational instru men t which helps determ ine the position of a ship by measu ring the angle between the

    horizon and heavenly body. Inven ted arou nd 1730, sextants replaced the astrolabes used by m ost explorers of the Age of

    Exploration..

    SLAVERY A relationship betw een two p ersons in wh ich one is owned by the other as prop erty. In the emp ires of ancient

    Greece and Rome, most people (up to 90%) were slaves. Spain an d Portu gal became the world s greatest slave traders in

    later history when they took over the traffic in African slaves from the Arabs. The Spanish also enslaved hu ge nu mbers of

    the Latin American native popu lation, especially the Aztecs, Incas, and Mayas.

    SMALLPOX A highly contagious, often deadly viral disease that causes thou sand s of tiny sores all over the bod y. Small-

    pox was accidentally brought to the New World by Europeans. Native Americans had no natu ral immunity to smallpox

    and epidemics of the d isease brought d eath to large num bers of their pop ulation. Smallpox was also the first disease to be

    prevented by vaccination by Edw ard Jenner in 1796.

    TENOCH ITLAN (tenochteeTLAHN ) Capital city of the Aztecs foun ded around 1330 on site of present d ay Mexico

    City, Mexico.

    TEOTIHUACAN (Tayohteewh aCon) A great city of ancient Mexico know n for its hu ge pyram ids. The peop le who

    built this city, the Teotihuacans, controlled the Valley of Mexico for many centuries.

    A favorite food of the Aztecs were cornmeal tamales, and althou gh they u sually filled them w ith beans, fruit, pepp ers, or

    fish the Aztecs sometimes ad ded delicacies like insect eggs, boiled grasshopp ers, snails, and red worm s.

    When Cortez conquered th e Aztecs in 1521, their emp ire of fifteen million peop le stretched from the Atlantic to the Pacific

    and was mad e up of 38 different p rovinces containing nearly 500 towns.

    There were no hor ses in either North or South America un til the Spanish conqu erors came.

    The following crops were not found in Europe until they were imported from the Americas:

    corn (maize)

    potatoes

    tomatoes

    avocados

    chocolate

    tobacco

    By 1519, the Aztecs were sacrificing abou t 20,000 peop le a year to the gods by cutting ou t their beating hearts, and sincemost of the victims w ere prisoners of war, the Aztecs came to believe that war w as needed for their emp ire to survive.

    The ancient Maya peop le of Mexico and Central America never established a single nation. Instead , they lived in man y

    separate kingdoms that were often at war w ith one another. The Mayan kings were both head warriors and priests. The

    kings often drew their own blood and offered it to the gods during religious ceremonies.

    The Maya were the only native American people to inven t a comp lete writing system. Even though the Aztecs used

    picture writing to record names and events only, the Maya were able to write complete sentences.

    The Maya played gam es using rubber balls. They were not allowed to touch the balls with either their hand s or feet;

    instead they had to hit the balls with their chest, hips and shoulders.

    Abou t 5000 priests worked at the temp le of Hu izilopochtli, the Aztec god of war.

    Today the flag of Mexico is decorated w ith an u nusual p icture of an eagle. This picture comes from an old legend wh ich

    said that the Aztecs must bu ild a great city wh erever they saw an eagle on a cactus w ith a snake in its beak. That is wh y

    they bu ilt their capital, Tenochitlan, where mod ern d ay Mexico City stands.

    In the early 1600s, the following sup plies were needed to sup ply a ship and 190 men for a three mon ths voyage at sea:
