DELEGATE NEWS • 3 Southport’s BIDto be the BestSouthport has now joined the increasing number of towns to have a BID (Business Improvement District). BIDs are funded by a small percentage increase in the business rates paid by local businesses.

For Southport, this additional money will be used to attract more visitors to the town to support existing businesses and attract new ones.

Already over half a million new LED lights have been installed in the trees along Lord Street and these were switched on as part of last year’s Christmas celebrations.

There will be several BID sponsored events for the town including a Halloween Festival as well as bigger and better Christmas festivities.

Andrew Sloman the BID manager said ‘Southport Business Improvement District uses major investment from the business community to enhance the visitor experience in key areas such as the creation of new events including the Spookport Halloween Festival, installing vibrant new lighting and floral schemes, supporting classic heritage features and generally ensuring the town is somewhere visitors just want to keep coming back to’

The BID will run for five years initially and during that time will attract and invest around £2.5 million to support the local economy.

The exclusive Lavender House Day Spa situated at the head of Southport’s famous Lord Street shopping boulevard provides supremely comfortable and luxurious treatment rooms together with a wide selection of therapies to pamper you.

November will see The British Cattle Veterinary Association returning to Southport for a fourth time. Bringing around 400 delegates to the resort this bovine based organisation was established in 1967 and is the cattle specialist division of the British Veterinary Association with over 1200 members. The Association is involved with all aspects of cattle veterinary matters and is consulted by many organisations for informed opinion.

Providing courses for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for Veterinary Surgeons is one of BCVA’s primary objectives. There are various courses arranged throughout the year on various topics relating to cattle health. However the flagship event is the BCVA’s Annual Congress, held in October, giving a mixture of scientific and practical presentations by speakers from the UK and abroad.

“BCVA first came to Southport Theatre and Convention Centre in 2006 (before the Ramada Plaza Hotel was built). The Convention Centre suited our needs well and with the addition of the Hotel on-site it was even better on our return in 2009 & 2011. Having everything in one location, helpful friendly staff at the centre and hotel, good quality catering, along with fantastic help from Southport Tourism offering an online booking system for hotels and help with putting together information for delegates about Southport is why we are returning in 2015, 2017 & 2019!” - Dee Little, Association Administrator, BCVA

The National Association of Retired Police Officers [NARPO] is a branch based organisation formed in 1919 and is made up of 111 local branches spread throughout England and Wales. NARPO returns to Southport in September this year for its Annual Conference bringing in excess of 500 members to visit the resort. NARPO provides excellent value for money for over 84,000 members, with an annual membership fee of under £20. The association affords members an opportunity to keep abreast of developments that affect former police officers and a chance to keep in touch with former colleagues.

NARPO negotiate commercial services for members including home and car insurance, a group travel insurance scheme, free advice on a wide range of issues, vehicle recovery, solicitor’s advice and assistance, holiday offers, medical insurance, discounted purchasing and much more.

“NARPO are delighted to be holding our Annual Conference in Southport once again – the conference venue, facilities, and organisation are excellent and live up to the standards and expectations of both our members and us. We are all looking forward to returning in September.” – Ian Potter, President of NARPO

Rex & Roxy help delegates make the most of their free-timeSouthport has enlisted the help of Rex the dog for its current conference marketing campaign. Rex travels to exhibitions with the team and has even gathered his own followers on twitter and facebook!

Rex and his wife, Roxy were brought onboard following a major piece of research commissioned by Southport Conferences in spring 2014. The project looked into the habits of business travellers across the UK and their interest in extending a visit after a conference or event into a leisure break. The results gave clear indications that a seaside resort like Southport would be the ideal location to add on some leisure time or partner activity.

Southport offers an amazing choice of activities for free-time, visit our Delegate Zone on Southportconferences.com for more information and look out for Rex and Roxy in the press and online!

Southport Conference Team have joined the Social Media Revolution and we invite you along for the ride! Follow us on Facebook and Twitter before, during and after your event to get up to date information about the resort. PLUS why not upload photos and updates while you’re in Southport? We’d love to see delegates enjoying both their event and free-time in the town.

Business Round-UpAs well as those organisations already featured, this year will also see Rotary International Districts 1220 and 1285 (ex-1280) returning to Southport in Autumn bringing over 1600 delegates to the resort. The Methodist Church of GB & NI return in summer for a second time and the popular IDTA (International Dance Teachers Association) will be back again in July for their annual Congress.

Other notable events returning this year include UNISON Women’s Conference, Baker’s Food & Allied Workers Union, Prison Officers Association and Royal British Legion as well as the Institute of Chiropodists & Podiatrists in May in what is their Diamond Anniversary year.

First time visitors in 2015, we look forward to welcoming SPUC, the Association of Speakers Clubs and the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of GB & Ireland.

For those of you who are not familiar with who we are, I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about the SRA. The Association was founded in 2006 and now has 29 members all of whom are proud to offer a varied style of restaurant and cuisine for you to enjoy.

Our members serve everything from Italian to Indian and Japanese to Chinese – not forgetting traditional British of course.

When the SRA was set up it had one simple aim – to promote our businesses to you, our customers. All member restaurants are vetted before being allowed to join and have to make certain guarantees.

One of which I am particularly proud of in this era of fast food and microwave chefs, is that we promise that over 70% of the food we serve is produced freshly on site using as many locally sourced ingredients as possible.

Each restaurant is owned by local people who take pride in their establishment. With us you will get that personal touch that only an owner can offer.

Thank you for your interest in our Association and I hope you will find a restaurant which tickles your taste buds!

The Promenade of Southport is internationally famous. A bronze statue of Queen Victoria is a focal point along this impressive stretch, Her Majesty surveying all that goes on beneath her. Walking up the Promenade, you can meander in and out of the stunning King’s Gardens. Often overlooked by the busy conference delegate, these beautifully landscaped gardens, opposite the Royal Clifton Hotel, grace the edge of the Marine Lake and provide an elegant opportunity to take in the scenery.

There’s also some unusual pieces of public art to spot along the way as well as flat & crown green bowls, Lakeside Miniature Railway, Model Railway Village, pitch & putt golf and much more.

The stunning seafront gardens were recently awarded more than £4 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund and this paid for major renovation works including a complete restoration of the Venetian Bridge, Victorian shelters, gardens and fountain and the addition of an exciting new play area – resulting in a first class park for both residents and visitors to enjoy.

Shoppers Paradise!

There’s plenty of retail therapy on offer in Southport with a great mix of high street favourites and independent shops. The charming Victorian boulevard of Lord Street has been Southport’s most famous landmark for over a century and has almost a mile of canopied shops framed by leafy gardens and fountains. It’s on Lord Street, that you’ll find the Royal Arcade and Wayfarers Arcade, both packed with exclusive stores selling everything from antiques & collectables to wedding dresses and vintage home-ware. There’s much more beyond Lord Street though, with the pedestrianised Chapel Street offering high street names and Wesley Street with its pretty pastel coloured niche shops. The recently refreshed Southport Indoor Market prides itself on offering the freshest of locally sourced produce – and at bargain prices too!

Southport Pier - traditional and modern design in harmonySouthport Pier was the first iron pier, it was built 1860 at a cost of £8,700 and re-opened in 2002 following a £7 million restoration programme and is the second longest in the UK. The multi award-winning Pier has proved to be a real favourite amongst visitors, and regularly hosts a number of events, including bird watching and family fun days and the views at Pier-end are truly panoramic.

With it’s striking modern design, the Pier Pavilion is also very popular and the Pier Cafe offers light refreshments - there’s even a licensed bar if you fancy something a little stronger! The Pier Pavilion also houses a number of traditional style amusements, a real throwback to a golden era, plus an exhibition tracking the history of the Pier itself - a must for pier buffs!

A relatively recent addition to pier facilities is the tram. Added in 2005 this modern, air-conditioned tram is not only a state-of-the-art way for people of all ages to travel along the pier, but also a very practical way for visitors with limited mobility to get to the pavilion and enjoy the attractions and spectacular views.

From England’s highest mountain to its deepest lake, the glorious Lake District National Park is just over an hours drive from Southport and a fantastic location for a day out in the countryside. Around and About the NorthwestSouthport is ideally

situated for touring the area with most of the region’s highlights less than an hour away, and only 30 minutes from

the motorway network.

Just a few miles from Southport, Crosby beach is home to 100 iron men who keep a watchful eye on the approach to Liverpool Bay.

This iconic sculpture was created by Antony Gormley who cast the 650 kilo figures from his own body and installed them so that the tide would ebb and flow around them to reveal and then submerge them, giving them a sometimes eerie quality.

‘Another Place’ will celebrate having been in its present location for 10 years in 2015 and there’ll be a programme of events to celebrate this milestone so go to visitsouthport.com for all the latest news.

WWT Martin Mere is where wilderness and family-friendliness combine.

Autumn and winter are fantastic times to visit the nature reserve and animal collection. In autumn 2014, a record 45,500 pink-footed geese used the reserve as a stopping point on their migration from Iceland providing a rare opportunity to see the display of thousands of geese whiffling over the mere. In winter, many thousands of wild ducks, geese and Whooper swans are drawn to the internationally-rated wetlands, offering spectacular displays of feather and flight with an award winning experience called Swan Spectacular when up to 2000 swans feed before your eyes. All areas of the centre are accessible by wheelchair and hides showing these spectacles are only a short walk from the visitor centre.

But there is plenty to see and do at Martin Mere all year round, with more than 100 types of rare and endangered water-birds to hand feed, a family of enchanting otters in residence, award winning canoe and boat safari and Downy Duckling experience in Spring and Summer, an imaginative playground for young adventurers and a rolling programme of events, walks and talks makes WWT Martin Mere an inspirational and fun day out for all ages. Southport also has an annual triathlon event which has three different difficulty levels ranging from the ‘sprint’ event (400m swim, 10k bike, 2.5k run) up to the full event (1500m swim, 40k bike, 10k run).
