Presidential Report 2017

Dear CEB member Federations, 2017 was a year of excitement. On the field first, with a great showing of European countries at the international level. The Netherlands reached again the semi-finals of the World Baseball Classic while Israel notched the cinderella story of the year, qualifying for the second round of the competition. Congratulations to them and to Italy, Czech Republic, France, Russia and Austria which represented Europe in Baseball World Cups, at the Universiade or at the World Baseball Classic. This year was full of hard-fought games and plenty of emotion. It also was a year of firsts for some countries: the first win ever of Lithuania in the European Championship B Group as well as the one or Ireland in the U18 Qualifiers. Congratulations! My deepest gratitude goes to our 2017 National Teams and Club competitions organizers. National Federations and their support clubs allowed CEB events to take place and our game to thrive with the help of our Technical, Scoring and Umpiring commissions members and all officials that I want to thank for their work and dedication. Some of this year’s action was livestreamed for free on the internet thanks to a partnership between CEB and the Austrian Baseball Federation for the U15 European Baseball Championship and with the Czech Baseball Association for the U23 European Baseball Championship. Other great initiatives were taken, notably for the B-Group in Poland. One of our priority is to ensure that as many events as possible are streamed so that fans and soon to be converts can follow our competitions. For its first year of office, the newly Executive Board has been dedicated to bringing a new dynamic to European Baseball. As stated in my election program, our work has been focused on development and the cooperation with European Softball, both at institutional level with the establishment of a joint commission targeting the merger of our Federations and at the sporting level with joint initiatives in the field of sport and media. The merger of CEB & ESF, which shall take place during the 2018 Congress in Val d’Europe, France, next February will set a landmark for the future of our sport in Europe. Europe will indeed be the first continent to walk in the footsteps of the World Baseball Softball Confederation which completed its merger during the 2017 Congress in Botswana. I want to thank the joint commission members for their work and ESF President Gabriel WAAGE for his confidence in the fact that Baseball and Softball’s future on our continent lies in the birth of WBSC Europe. I hereby take the opportunity to congratulate President Riccardo FRACCARI, Treasurer Angelo VICINI and Member at Large Luis MELERO for their re-election at the WBSC Baseball Division Board. There are four European in the Board, including myself as a representative of the continent to make sure that our voice is heard,

especially at a critical time of Paris having been awarded with the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the place of Baseball-Softball in the sports programme being at stake. In his end-of-the-year address to the world baseball-softball community, WBSC President FRACCARI has confirmed that Paris 2024 will be the organization’s top priority for the years to come with the goal of securing the place of baseball-softball in the 2024 OG sports programme. We in Europe have learned the hard way what being an Olympic - or more precisely a non-Olympic sport means; that’s why initiatives are currently being taken by the French Baseball Softball Federation and WBSC to fulfill this crucial objective for the development of our game. In this context I’m very happy to confirm the birth of the Super 6 Baseball Softball, an event gathering the six best European countries of Men’s Baseball and of Women’s Softball at the same place at the same time under the format of our sport at the Olympics. It will be a first-of-its-kind competition aiming at showcasing what Europe has best to offer and bringing business opportunities to the newly created WBSC Europe. It will also allow us to show that Baseball and Softball can work together, and I would like to thank The Netherlands for hosting the inaugural edition of the Super 6 from September 18 to 23, 2018 in Hoofddorp. A presentation of this event will be made during the 2018 Congress. I would like to thank all Executive Committee members, Presidents and members of Commissions for their work as well as Kristina Uroić who run the day to day activities of the office in Zagreb and François Collet for their help in achieving CEB’s goal of growing our game in Europe. I wish all players, coaches, officials and leaders the best for 2018. Didier Seminet

Marketing and Media Commission Report 2017

The CEB Marketing and Media Commission was created shortly after the executive board elections last year. The commission is led by Vice President Rainer Husty, having Francois Collet and Johannes Godler and Philip Würfel were working side by side, to develop a new media and communication strategy for baseball in Europe. Besides the creation of media guidelines for CEB and its tournament, a more open communication plan was implemented. Although no Senior European Baseball Championship was played, the number of articles, press releases and social media engagement increased and more people could be reached. At the end of the year, cooperation with ESF for a closer relationship for the upcoming WBSC Europe merger was initialized and a joint meeting was held in Vienna.

Confederation of European Baseball

While developing a found media strategy, the commission was focusing on contents Baseball in Europe needs to push in order to have more engagement with our sport. Moved pictures and social media activities are the two corner stones in order to widen the baseball fan base, while a specific focus on press relations with media partners and new approaches in communication will strengthen our partnerships and increase our reach within public media. In 2017, CEB supported LOCs in producing video and livestream material. The great numbers and feedback we received show that supporting this area of media assets is the right way to proceed. Therefore a focus on video will be followed up by a joint platform for live and on-demand video broadcasting of European baseball and softball. It will give video content a common home and push marketing opportunities not only for CEB events but also national federations. The platform will be introduced to you during the media workshop at the 2018 congress. In order to streamline media communication at CEB’s tournaments, guidelines were developed and supported by best-practice examples of the last years. LOCs and national federations will receive guidance material on how to set up and run a media team and design different types of media outputs during tournaments. Additionally, a centralized branding for events, especially for our main tournaments, is on scope for the near future. The media commission is also planning to roll-out media workshops, to support national federations, clubs and LOCs. The two goals in all of these initiatives are to professionalize media communication and strengthen the brand of baseball in Europe, both at the same time. Business opportunities In 2017, a deal with Wilson could be reached for baseballs. The Wilson A1030 was provided to all LOCs in order to support them in hosting the tournaments. CEB also got in touch with MLB in order to further develop the MLB shop Europe. Our communication with MLB’s office in London could be resumed and a closer partnership with CEB to help MLB cooperating with national was discussed. Media Another output on the meeting with MLB’s office in London were talks about a more open media strategy for MLB in Europe and how a closer cooperation could work out. The partnership with European Baseball and Softball Magazin (EBSM+ ) was further discussed. While a greater media coverage on senior tournaments was enhanced, future cooperation regarding a merchandise shop on EBSM’s platform, also for national federations, were offered. Again, we also want to thank Mister Baseball for supporting European baseball and giving our sport another platform within Europe. Communication

TV In 2017, CEB supported the production of live stream content during the U23 European Championship in Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. While in Wels, six group stage games could be broadcasted, fifteen games were streamed from Brno. More than 50.000 fans could be reached via YouTube and more than 12.000 watched the final game of the U23 Euro live.

Also for the future, a focus on video and streaming production will be set. With this, a the video platform and cooperations with sport networks are building an important base for the growth and further engagement of our baseball community in Europe. Super 6 A project that already started in 2017 and will accompany us in the next upcoming months is the Super 6 tournament in cooperation with ESF. Coordination on the working group has started in late summer of 2017. Together with ESF, a branding and a communication strategy for the joint event has been worked out and will be unveiled during the 2018 congress. We want to thank everybody who was working in 2017, in any way, to develop a new media and communication strategy for baseball in Europe
