FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear parishioners,

In the first part Gaudium et Spes deals with the dignity of the human person. The Council Fathers affirm the confusion of man in answering the question of who man is, and the answer that the Church can give. Man is created in God’s image and everything on earth is to be referred to humanity as its centre and culmination (n.12). Although constituted in righteousness by God, he didn’t fulfill the plan of God, and succumbed to the Evil One. So the human being is divided interiorly, struggling between good and evil (n.13). Man discovers deep within his conscience a law which he does not make for himself –a law that he is bound to obey, whose voice commands to love and do what is good and to avoid evil (n.16).

It is only in freedom that human beings can turn to what is good. However, many times they agree in a notion of freedom that accepts wrong ways, affirming the permission to do anything they please, without any other law than their own judgments and tendencies (n. 17). The outstanding feature of human dignity is that human beings are called to communion with God. Many people today, however, refuse to accept this relationship (n.19).

Modern atheism affirms the independence of man from God, and the edification of a world without any reference to God, a world according to his whims, a world totally independent of his creator. One form of atheism looks towards people’s economic and social liberation and claims that religion is an obstacle to such liberation in raising people’s hopes towards a future illusory life which would discourage them from building the earthly city (n.20). The message of the Church is, however, in harmony with the deepest desires of the human heart, and this message spreads light, life and liberty (n.21). It needs to be emphasized that it is only in the mystery of the Incarnate Word that light is shed on the mystery of humankind (n.22).

Speaking about the human community, the Council Fathers express the concern that everyone must have for the rest of humankind, since man is called to live in society and must search for the good of others for love of God (n.24). Therefore, everything should be rendered to a person which is required to lead a truly human life – food, clothing, shelter, the rights of freedom, education, work and respect (n.26). Whatever is hostile to life itself (homicide, genocide, assisted suicide, abortion, euthanasia); whatever is offensive to human dignity (arbitrary imprisonment, slavery, prostitution): all these and the like are evil (n.27). Many people act nowadays as if they had no care for society’s needs. Social relationships are among the most important responsibilities of all of us today (n.30). Education needs to be undertaken in such a way that it produces people who are not just cultivated but also generous (n.31).

Man, created in God’s image, was commissioned to subdue the earth and all it contains, to rule the world in justice and holiness (n.34). There is a legitimate autonomy of earthly realities: created things and societies have their own laws and values which are to be gradually discovered, utilized and ordered by men. Therefore, methodical inquiry in all disciplines can never really be at variance with faith, since secular realities and the realities of faith have their origin in the same God (n.36).

The Council Fathers affirm that the Church believes that, through its individual members and as a whole, she can contribute to making the human family and its history more human (n.40), since no human law is as able to safeguard the personal dignity and freedom of humans as fittingly as the Gospel which Christ has entrusted to his Church (n.41). Her particular mission, however, is of a religious nature; yet this mission produces enlightenment and resources which can help the construction of the human community (n.42). No false opposition should be set up between professional and social activities on the one hand and the life of religion on the other. The Church might enlighten the laity, but they have their own part to play in giving answer to today’s problems (n.43). While she helps the world and receives much from the world, the Church has only one goal, namely the coming of God’s Kingdom and the accomplishment of salvation for the whole human race (n.45).

With my blessing, Fr. Jose Giunta, IVE

Gregorian Chant as a Paradigm of Sacred Music (Week 4) by William Mahrt

Universality: Gregorian chant is universal in two different ways. By being a sacred musical language, it is supra national, accessible to those of any culture equally. But its traditional place in the sacred liturgy has always insured that the members of the Church grew up hearing this sacred musical language so that it was received naturally as a part of the liturgy.

Bontà delle forme: The sense of St. Pius’s text surely admits a principal role for the beautiful in general. Indeed, the beauty of music is a crucial element in the “edification and sanctification of the faithful.” Beauty is the glue that holds the truth and goodness to their tasks; to paraphrase Hans Urs von Balthasar, without beauty, the truth does not persuade, goodness does not compel.7 Beauty is that which synthesizes diverse elements into a unity, and that is the general function of music in the liturgy, to draw together a diverse succession of actions into a coherent whole. Likewise, the beauty of music is capable of serving a range of sacred expressions, praise, lamentation, exaltation, and so forth. Still, I propose that St. Pius’s wording has a more precise sense: the differentiation of forms is an essential part of the beauty of liturgical music; each chant has its own musical and textual form as it functions as an introit, gradual, and the like, and its liturgical beauty, its splendor formae, includes distinguishing that part from the others, while at the same time it projects a significant feature of that part itself.
