Research: Current Situation

• Open Source Hardware Communities

High cost of integrating designs

Difficult to find documentation

Little overview of existing design

Processes are not transparent

Inefficient collaboration Do not benefit from being open source

– the communities do not truly collaborate on partial designs

• Existing Industry Tools

Product data Management

How is it done in the industry?

Document Management

Product Structure Management

Process Automation

Project Management

Crowdsourcing

Posing challenges -> concrete task, easy to engage in

Well defined step-by-step process -> overview allowing user moderation

Interface Management

Some main objectives of the IFD • Acting as a vehicle for communication • To support a modularization process • To form basis for a PLM (PDM) data structure (Brunn & Mortensen, 2011)

Core functionality

9 20 December 2012

Why Communities do not collaborate on partial designs

What It should lower the cost of integrating designs and allow concurrent collaboration

How It communicates and allow control of product structures

Difficult to find and validate documentation

It should create visual overview of documentation

Structure documentation according to both a category and product structure

Processes are not transparent

Communicate clear tasks for the community to engage in

Pose challenges guided by a well defined step-by-step process

Little overview and validation of existing designs

Create a hub and boundaries for existing designs

“collect” related designs in a standardized form that make them easy to search and crowd moderate
