2 INTRODUCTION

This report is done to fulfil the assignment requirements of the Computing and IT

in the Workplace module. The objective of this report is to conduct a research on the

business functions and online ticket purchase system of TGV Cinemas and document

it in a detailed report. The two lectures topic chosen for the similarities and

differences in this report are Real-Time Systems and Mobile Computing.

TGV Cinemas (formerly known as Tanjong Golden Village Sdn. Bhd.) is the

second largest cinema chain in Malaysia after its main competitor, Golden Screen

Cinemas. Founded in 1995, TGV Cinemas is a private media and entertainment

company that provides cinema services. TGV Cinemas is a wholly-owned subsidiary

of Tanjong Public Limited Company, its parent company. The largest TGV cineplex

is located in Sunway Pyramid Shopping Centre with 12 screens and 2598 seats

(David, et al., 2013). TGV is the pioneer of the Malaysian cinema industry by being

the first cinema to introduce the multiplex concept, a movie theatre with a number of

halls and separate screens that offers movie patrons with a wide array of movies

within one location. TGV shows a combination of major studio content, independent

films, local Malaysian and other Asian feature films. TGV is also well-known for

being the first cinema in the country to offer the ‘Beanieplex’ seating concept, in

which the regular seats are replaced by bean bag cushions and can be found at

selected cinemas outlets namely TGV 1st Avenue, TGV 1 Utama, TGV Sunway

Pyramid, TGV Tebrau City, TGV Bukit Indah and TGV Gurney Paragon Mall. In the

year of 2010, TGV undertook a major transformation exercise to refurbish its aging

cinemas and as a result of that, it saw its new generation of multiplexes sporting a

fresh look and feel adopting a more welcoming, vibrant and contemporary ambience

(TGV Cinemas , n.d.) In order to provide an enjoyable cinematic experience, TGV

cinemas has also went 100% digital in the broadcast of their films. Therefore, TGV

Cinemas can now display high-definition content in superior quality. Today, TGV

Cinemas owns and operates 20 premier multiplexes located in major shopping centres

in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Seremban, Ipoh, Penang, Johor Bahru and Terengganu

with a total of over 165 screens and more than 31,000 seats (TGV Cinemas , n.d.).

Besides that, TGV offer customers an online ticket purchasing service. TGV’s

online ticket purchasing system provides movie patrons an alternative and more

Page 6: Computing and IT in the Workplace (CT006-3-1-CITW)

convenient movie ticket purchasing system to complement the physical ticket

purchasing procedure. This online ticket purchasing system is TGV’s electronic

ticketing service which enables movie patrons to virtually purchase TGV movie

tickets from their selected TGV cinema location utilizing internet connection without

the need to go to a physical ticketing counter at TGV’s branches. To cater for this

online ticket purchasing facility, TGV also provides its customers with mobile

applications for the iPhone and Android platform for customers to purchase tickets.

Through TGV’s website and mobile applications, customers can purchase movie

tickets from the comfort of their home or on-the-go, provided that there is an internet

connection. TGV’s online ticket purchasing system offers customers the option to

collect movie tickets from TGV’s counters with the booking ID after an online

purchase or use their smartphones with the provided QR code in the app or email to

scan it on TGV’s barcode scanners without the need to collect tickets from the

counters.

3 CURRENT SCENARIO

In the modern world where almost everything is becoming increasingly

digitalised, no organisation can deny the very existence of computers and Information

Technology is a valuable asset to an organisation. Like what is said by (Wealth

Creator, 2013), these changes in technology have a big influence on how the business

world operates. As technology advances, people become more expectant for quick,

easy and convenient access to technology that enables them to complete various tasks

with ease and in a short time. People’s lives are now revolved around technology as

technology have the ability to make life easier thus making it an important aspect in

people’s lives.

Through the use of technology, companies and organisations have the ability to

reach out to these people who form the majority of the society nowadays

(Independent Age, n.d.). The use of computer and information technology to provide

services to movie goers will definitely provide an advantage to TGV as movie patrons

could reduce the hassle to travel all the way to a physical ticketing counter at TGV’s

branches to check the status of a movie or purchase a ticket, instead, they can do it all

online through TGV’s mobile application or website right where they are, no matter at

home or outdoors. All they need is an internet connection and either a computer or

smart phone. TGV can also cut down on the queuing time at their physical counters as

movie goers can purchase tickets online. All these not only saves time but it can also

help both the movie goers and TGV to cut down on costs, as movie goers do not need

to drive to purchase tickets and TGV can reduce its workforce through having an

online ticket purchasing service.

All these benefits that TGV gain will translate to successes and profits in the

running of their business. Not only will they have a competitive edge against their

rivals, more customers will also select TGV as their preferred cinema because of the

convenience provided. Although TGV is not the first cinema industry in the country

to implement this service, but by implementing this service, TGV can keep up with

the latest trend and not concede to their rivals. An example of a current scenario that

affects the TGV’s online ticket purchasing system in the technology of QR Codes.

Through QR Codes, also known as Quick Response Code, users can purchase tickets

Page 8: Computing and IT in the Workplace (CT006-3-1-CITW)

8

paperless as users only need to scan the QR Code on the barcode scanner located on

the entrance of cinema hall. This shows how the current scenario can have an effect

on a business.

4 FUNCTIONALITY

The core functionality of TGV Cinema’s online ticket purchasing system is to

enable movie goers to purchase movie tickets online and to check the schedules of

movies showing times. Besides that, customers can also check their purchase history,

use the QR Code generated through the mobile application to enter the cinema halls,

watch movie trailers and synopsis, check the locations of TGV Cinemas and many

more features.

4.1 Main Functions of TGV online ticket purchasing service

tickets through the website, TGV will send them a confirmation e-mail with the QR

code attached in the e-mail. Movie patrons just need to scan the QR code present in

the smartphone on the barcode scanners provided at the entrance to the movie halls in

order to enter. No physical tickets are required.

4.1.3 Check movie status online

Movie goers can check on the status of movies online through TGV’s website

and mobile application. They can check on the location of the cinema, availability of

TGV provides a very straightforward and simple way for customers to check for

screening times and purchase movie tickets in both their website and mobile

application. Unlike their rival GSC, customers are only required to have a payment

method and email address, no login or registration is required. This greatly provided

much convenience to users as they do not have to go through the process of logging in

or registering for a new account, all they need to do is access the website or mobile

application and make a purchase directly.

5 ADVANTAGES

In this modern era, most of the people are trying to find an easier way to fulfil

their needs through online services. In this situation, TGV Cinemas has come up with

an online purchasing and online booking system that fulfil user’s enquiries and needs.

With the existence of this online ticket purchasing system, user can access the website

for information regarding movie timings or ticket purchasing anytime. Simply with

just a smartphone or tablet that most of the people have it nowadays, users can

purchase or book the seat online using their devices whereas users at home can use

laptops or desktop to purchase or book their seating. Users rather spend their time go

online with their computers instead of queuing up to purchase movie tickets. Doing it

online not only saves user’s time but also allows user to purchase even faster

comparing from the people who were queuing up to buy movie tickets. TGV Cinemas

online ticket purchasing system has bring a huge impact towards its own company.

This way, the company can cut the cost of hiring more workers. Purchasing tickets

online via credit cards or debit card is the best idea they could come out with because

TGV Cinema won’t want to trouble their own customers to pay their tickets by going

to bank to bank in cash or cheque.

Page 22: Computing and IT in the Workplace (CT006-3-1-CITW)

22

6 DISADVANTAGES

Users are making payment with their credit card or debit card through their

accounts. Security-wise, this may be an issue for the users. Users might be facing

some risks that their bank account might be hacked by professional hackers and steal

their personal information to commit crimes. If hackers manage to hack into user’s

bank accounts, hackers might use the money to purchase items and might even

transfer the user’s money to their unknown bank account. Although security systems

are improving and getting more advanced nowadays but no matter how advanced the

system is, hackers may find their way through the security loopholes to hack into the

user’s bank accounts. Besides that, there are also possibilities that occasionally, TGV

Cinemas’ website is down due to maintenance or too many users are logging in and

purchasing at the same time. Once the website is down, TGV might lose some

customers for that day because customers can’t log in to purchase or book their

seating. For this case, users still be able to watch the movie they want if they decide to

queue up at TGV’s counters to purchase tickets and seats might not be what users

usually want because there might be other customers that had purchase the seat they

wanted because the seats availability is based on the first come first serve policy.

Customers might not also get to watch the movie they wanted because it can be sold

out by the time they reach the ticketing counter or just have to watch other time later.

This will provide a huge source of inconvenience to movie goers.

7 IMPACT OF THE TECHNOLOGY

Over the years, technology has become an important element and ingredient in

the world of business, impacting enormously on business activities in every aspect.

Modern business has simply become modern because of technological innovation

(StudyMode.com, 2012). This statement by StudyMode.com truly reflects the current

scenario of modern technology, how it impacts business entities in many aspects.

Without computer and information technology, many businesses will not be able to

achieve what they have achieved so far. However, there is always a downside to

everything, and this is not an exception. As much as technology can positively impact

a certain organisation, it has adverse or negative effects too. The sections below will

discuss on the positive and negative impacts that technology can bring forth to a TGV

Cinemas.

7.1 Higher Grossing Rate

Through the implementation of computer and information technology in the form

of online ticket purchasing system, TGV can achieve a higher grossing rate. Grossing

rate is defined as the total amount of sales, salary, profit, etc., before taking

deductions for expenses, taxes, and other expenses (Dictionary.com, 2007). Due to the

increased convenience in purchasing a movie ticket nowadays, more people are more

willing to spend their money and leisure time in cinemas watching movies together

with family and friends. This in turn translates to a higher grossing rate for TGV as

more revenue can be earned through the increase in amount of movie goers.

7.2 Efficiency and Effectiveness

Through the implementation of the online ticket purchasing system, TGV can

run their business in a much more efficient and effective manner because everything

is computerised and manual input is at a minimum. To look back at previous records

to tabulate accounts, TGV simply have to utilise the system to check on how many

tickets were purchased through the online ticket purchasing system without the need

of physical paper receipts thus paperwork is reduced. The effectiveness of TGV’s

marketing strategy can also be further boosted through the online ticket purchasing

system as it provides another platform for TGV to reach out to its customers and a

wider audience base. Besides that, the online ticket purchasing system also enable

Page 24: Computing and IT in the Workplace (CT006-3-1-CITW)

24

movie goers to be more efficient as they do not need to spend time to go to a physical

counter to purchase tickets, they can do it online wherever they are.

7.3 Costs

TGV’s online ticket purchasing system impacts the cost of running the business

both positively and negatively. Positively speaking, the online ticket purchasing

system can help TGV reduce costs because they can cut down on their workforce as a

big portion of the work such as ticket purchase is being done through automated

systems. TGV also charge customers a RM1 online processing fee which can also

help TGV cover some overhead costs. However, by implementing this online ticket

purchasing system, TGV need to invest money in purchasing and maintaining the

equipment and facilities required for the system. Besides that, TGV also need to

spend money to train its employees on the implementation of online ticket purchasing

system. This is because it is necessary for all TGV employees to be able to converse

and help customers about their technical issues and also understand the workings of

the system so to adapt to the new technology.

7.4 Interaction with Customers

With the availability of the online ticket purchasing system, the amount of movie

patrons visiting TGV branches to purchase tickets has significantly dropped. This

scenario will lessen the chances of TGV employees meeting customers face-to-face as

many of the customers prefer to purchase tickets online. The rate of interaction with

customers among TGV staff will surely decrease. It is necessary to have a constant

interaction with customers so that TGV can be aware of the needs of customers but

the chances of it happening is decreasing.

Page 25: Computing and IT in the Workplace (CT006-3-1-CITW)

25

8 Similarities and Differences

8.1 Real-Time Systems [CHAN KALVIN (TP030700)]

Real-Time systems is defined as any information processing activity or which

has to respond to externally generated input stimuli within a finite and specified

period (Andrews, et al., 2008, p. 536). Besides that, Kopetz (1997) defined real-time

system as a computer system in which the correctness of the system behaviour

depends not only on the logical results of the computation, but also on the physical

instant at which these results are produced. The core functionality of real-time system

in an organisation to cause the system to become more reliable, dependable, safe,

secure and the ability to tolerate faults.

TGV is utilizing real-time systems in its online ticket purchasing service

because the service allows the user freedom to choose the movie timing and which

cinema location they want to buy the tickets from. At the same time, users can

purchase movie tickets and check the status of a movie whenever it is convenient for

them, and they receive immediate confirmation either through the mobile application

or email of their purchase.

8.1.1 Types of Real-Time Systems

Before it is discussed in detail about the similarities and differences, the types

of real-time systems will be discussed first. There are three types of real-time system,

namely: Hard real-time system, Firm real-time system, and Soft real-time system.

Hard real-time system is defined as a strict adherence to each task deadline.

When an event occurs, it should be serviced within the predictable time at all times

(Kamal, 2008). Failure to do so can lead to a fatal or critical loss.

Besides that, firm real-time system allow occasional deadline misses. But if an

instance of a task is incomplete by its deadline, the instance is considered valueless

and is discarded by the system (Liu, et al., 2006).

Soft real-time system is defined as a system which performance is degraded to a

lesser value but not destroyed by failure to meet response-time constrains (Laplante &

Ovaska, 2012). Failure to meet the response time will not lead to any catastrophic

events.

Page 26: Computing and IT in the Workplace (CT006-3-1-CITW)

26

8.1.2 Similarities

TGV’s online ticket purchasing system is utilizing the firm real-time system.

This is because when the user starts the payment process, there is a time limit for the

user to complete the payment process. Once the limit is reached, a timeout error will

appear and the payment process will be terminated. Users are required to start the

payment process from the beginning. This is an example for a firm real-time system

as once the task is past the deadline, ‘the task is considered valueless and is discarded

by the system’. The purpose of the timeout limit is a security feature to ensure that the

user’s account details are kept separate from all the other customers using the site at

the same time (Office Watch, n.d.). There is also an element of soft real-time system

in TGV online ticketing service. If customers did not purchase the movie tickets early

and found out the best seats of the cinema hall are all taken up the only remainders are

the few front-row seats, customers have no choice but to settle for the lower quality

front-row seats. Therefore, the customer satisfaction is degraded to a lesser value but

not destroyed by failure obtain any seats. Besides that, the online system is also able

to support error recovery. Error recovery is the procedure carried out when the system

tries to recover from the results of an error. For example, when a user entered a wrong

password in the payment, the system can detect the error and recover from it by

requesting the user to re-enter the correct password.

8.1.3 Differences

TGV’s online ticket purchasing system is not a hard real-time system. This is

because a missed booking or purchase is rarely catastrophic. If the payment is made

but the system missed it, TGV only need to refund the paid amount to the customer’s

account, nothing fatal will occur as the misses can be tolerated. Besides that, the

online ticket purchase system mobile application is not fault tolerant as it is unable to

detect, diagnose, and recover from faults. If the mobile application come across any

errors or software bugs, the application will either crash, freezes or terminates itself

without the ability to detect the source of the fault.

8.2 Mobile Computing [AU TZE JAY (TP030717)]

Mobile computing is a generic term describing the ability to use technology

‘untethered’, which means that it is not physically connected or in remote or mobile

environments. Mobile computing can be connected through an internet or a private

network. This includes examples such as laptops and desktop with wireless LAN or

WAN following by smart phones and tablets with Bluetooth or infrared and WI-FI.

Besides that, mobile computing can also be defined as one’s ability to use technology

while moving as opposed to laptops which are only practical used while deployed

stationary configuration. (Aztech, 2011) Major advancements in mobile technology

and the advent of mobile web mean we can now shop, advertise, read, purchase and

bank with our mobile device (Wealth Creator, 2013). There are 3 advantages and

disadvantages of mobile computing will be discussed. One of the advantages of

mobile computing is increase in productivity. For example, mobile devices can be

used in the field of various companies. In this case, it reduce the time and cost for

clients. Another advantages of mobile computing is cloud computing. It is one of the

main advantages of mobile computing is. For example, the function enables users to

save their documents in an online server and also being able to access this documents

anytime and anywhere when the user is having an internet connection. Whereas

mobile computing also have disadvantages. One of the disadvantages of mobile

computing is the quality of connectivity. Mobile devices needs WI-FI or data plans

such as 3G or 4G to access the internet. Next, another disadvantages of mobile

computing is security concerns. Mobile devices are unsafe to connect to outside WI-

FI networks because WPA and WEP security can be bypassed easily by hackers

(AirTight Networks Inc., 2012). Finally, the third disadvantages of mobile computing

is the power consumption. The battery life will not last long if a person uses smart

phone for playing games or simply just switching on mobile network and hotspot to

allow other people to connect and use their mobile network. (Mobile Computing

Project, 2012) Nowadays with the advance of technologies, mobile computing has

become a must for every individuals. Due to this scenario, TGV Cinemas has

invented a new application for customers to purchase or book tickets through online.

Transaction is made during a part of a process purchasing tickets using mobile

computing devices.

Page 28: Computing and IT in the Workplace (CT006-3-1-CITW)

28

With this application, customers can access this application to purchase or book

tickets anytime and anywhere.

8.2.1 The Device Used for Mobile Computing

Mobile phones like the smart phones and tablets make use of mobile

computing as TGV Cinemas has created an application for both Android for Samsung

users and iOS for iPhone or iPad users. These devices just required to use WI-FI or

data plans to connect to the internet which allows users to purchase or book their

tickets online. In this case, more customers prefer to use the application instead of

going to TGV Cinemas to queue up for purchasing movie tickets. The pictures below

are screenshots of TGV’s mobile application.

Page 29: Computing and IT in the Workplace (CT006-3-1-CITW)

8.2.2 Similarities

Businesses

Devices used for mobile computing such as smart phones or tablet allows customers

to access the application every day for new information or updates. Besides that, not

every couples will be free to walk-in to TGV Cinemas to purchase tickets. Simply

with just a smart phone or tablet allows customers to purchase or book tickets anytime

and anywhere. This is one of the benefits from mobile computing for customers.

Infotainment and more

TGV’s customers can obtain the latest news through the TGV application such as

movies coming out soon, movie synopsis, movie schedule and many more. All this

information can be received once the device is connected to a WI-FI or using a data

plan. Besides that, feedbacks and ratings from all around the world about that

particular movie should be updated and upload in the application so that customers

gets to decide whether to watch the movie or not.

8.2.3 Differences

Vehicles

The vehicle mobile computing that everyone is using which is call the Global

Positioning System which also known as GPS. Function of GPS is to know the

location of a place or destination. In this case, we are discussing about applications,

which does not have any relation with transportation and vehicles. The reason is

because all transactions will be made during the purchasing ticket process using the

internet.

Emergencies

Medical emergencies is not related to TGV. Customers don’t call TGV hotline for

emergency assistant and TGV Cinemas does not provide any emergency services as

well. Emergency services such as emergency medical technician which also known as

EMT’s will respond to any scene of accident immediately by using mobile computers

and they are able to capture patient’s information and other critical information. All

Page 30: Computing and IT in the Workplace (CT006-3-1-CITW)

30

this information will be sent to the receiving hospital and will prepare to receive and

treat the patient. Hence, emergencies has no relation with TGV Cinemas.

9 RECOMMENDATIONS AND PROPOSALS

TGV online ticketing service had brought lots of positive impact and has been

given positive feedbacks by users as well but there still will be some users think that it

is bad and brings negative impacts towards users.

TGV application has bring lots of convenience to most of the users that uses the

application but there are still some users who misuse the application. TGV Cinemas

has categorized their price range such as standard, twin, preferred and premium.

Under standard, it will be categorize to standard which cost RM7 and standard kids

which cost RM8. By using the application, users will tend to misuse the application to

purchase a cheaper ticket even users bring along kids into the cinema. Because of this

service, TGV does not have any information and evidence that the user is buying

tickets for himself or herself along with their children. Hence, users can easily

purchase standard price even though they are bringing along their children for a

movie. In such case, it is recommended that TGV will have a solution by now and

take action to solve this kind of case all around TGV Cinemas. TGV can just bring

down one of the categories in standard and just fix into a permanent one only. Besides

that, it is also recommended that TGV to have an extra category during weekdays

only which is the student’s category. Students can enjoy this special promotion during

weekdays after school finishes.

Ever since TGV started its online and mobile application system, TGV ceased to

provide any seat booking system to customers. TGV should provide a seat booking

systems online and in the application. Some customers are teenagers that doesn’t own

a credit card or even a debit card so they could not purchase tickets but at least their

able to book seating and make the payment through special counters for seat booking.

Each customer book their seats will be given a code to clarify and make payment at

the counter. Clarification and payment must be made 1 hour before the movie starts or

else the booking seats will be forfeited and reopen for walk-in customers to purchase.

Besides that, TGV has online banking payment such as Maybank2U, CIMBClicks

and PAYPAL if purchasing tickets in website but doesn’t have it in application.

Application only provides purchasing tickets with credit card or debit card. Many

Page 31: Computing and IT in the Workplace (CT006-3-1-CITW)

31

people nowadays prefer purchasing tickets by using their smart phones because it is

more convenient and able to purchase ticket anytime and anywhere as long as there is

internet connection. TGV should include online banking payment in their application

and it must be the same method.

Last but not least, it is also recommend that TGV should put trailers of new

movies about to be up on the screen in the application. In TGV application, there are

current movie trailers to watch but they didn’t upload movies trailers that are coming

out soon for users to watch. In this case, TGV should upload all coming out soon

movie trailers in the application.

10 CONCLUSION

Watching movies at cinemas is one of the favourite pastimes of people nowadays

especially the younger generation. By implementing the online ticket purchasing

system in the form of website and mobile application, it is guaranteed that TGV will

reap much benefits from the investments they poured forth into implementing the

system. This online ticket purchasing system has greatly contributed to the success of

TGV Cinemas and made it on par with its main rival GSC in technological aspects.

Since TGV already have the foundation, TGV can build upon it by adding more

features and improving its online ticket purchasing system both on the website and the

mobile application to make it more user-friendly and to cater to the needs to

customers. Indisputably, if TGV Cinemas were to study the benefits of the

recommendations brought forward in this report and implement it in its business

functions, TGV would surely be able to improve their current position in the cinema

industry as it is always playing second fiddle to its rival GSC.

With this report, the requirements for this assignment have been fully covered,

researched and reported.
