ForewordThe Comprehension Cloze section is one of the most challenging sections in the PSLE paper. There are no helping words given and a student requires specific skills to be able to score for this section. Some students manage to get by easily, with the answers just ‘popping out’ magically. Many others struggle to find the right words to fill in the blanks. Contrary to popular belief that you cannot ‘study’ for this section, you actually can! Just like a detective who searches for clues to find the answers to crack a case, a student learns to hunt for clues and apply the right techniques to derive the correct answers in a passage. This book reveals useful techniques that you can learn and apply in search for those clues together with ample practice to work on.

To score for this section, you need to:

1 have good general knowledge of different types of issues and topics to answer the ‘Common Sense (CS)’ types of questions,

2 build on your general knowledge by reading widely on an extensive range of current issues and topics,

3 master a wide range of vocabulary words and have a good grasp of phrasal verbs,

4 have sufficient practices to hone your ‘detective’ skills in identifying the different types of techniques to be used,

5 be exposed to the different types of techniques to be used through more practices to help you sharpen your ability to put the correct answers in the blanks.

This book provides the most comprehensive exercises for this section by providing a varied range of passages to enable you to hone and master the answering techniques.

Note

In this case, the answer could not be found within the sentence itself, or the sentences before and after the sentence with the blank. As such, you should proceed to search for clues from the paragraph before or after the sentence with the blank.

B Contextual Clues

As you begin to read the passage before attempting to find the answers, ask yourself, “What is the topic of this passage?” This will help you narrow down the contextual clues and related vocabulary found in the passage.

If the passage is about bees, then you should start thinking about words, themes and vocabulary associated with the topic given. Some of these words might be the answers to the blanks in the passage! Use the 5W1H(What,Where,When,Who,Why,How) to help you generate the different possible words related to the topic.

Here are some examples:

THE PLANET JUPITERCan you name all the planets in the solar system? Most of us 1. are

( PG ) very

familiar with planets like Earth and Mars, but do you know 2. which( PR )

is the largest of

all of them?

Jupiter, named after the god of sky and thunder and also the king of the gods in ancient

Roman mythology, is the largest planet in the 3. sola r( SS )

system. It is also the fourth

brightest in a list that includes the Sun, Moon and Venus when viewed from Earth. Exactly

how 4. big/la rge( PG/CS )

is Jupiter? Having a diameter of 142 984 km, it is so wide that

NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) estimates that more than a thousand

Earths can fit into one Jupiter.

Although it is huge, Jupiter is mainly made up of 5. gases( SS )

such as hydrogen

and helium. 6. Therefore( C )

, it is sometimes known as the ‘gas giant’. Jupiter has a stripy

appearance, with a visible red spot called the ‘Great Red Spot’. This red spot is like a giant

hurricane, and it has been on Jupiter for at least three hundred and fifty years. Imagine a

huge storm that hardly ever 7. stops/ceases( SS )

! If this storm were on Earth, we would all be in

big 8. trouble( PG )

!

Jupiter rotates much 9. faster( CC )

than any other planet we know. Compared to

Earth, which takes twenty-four hours to make one rotation, Jupiter only needs about ten

10. hou rs( SS/CS )

. This means that a day on Jupiter is extremely 11. short( SS )

, lasting

a mere ten hours. However, it takes Jupiter about twelve Earth years to complete a revolution

around the Sun!

Living on Jupiter one day is not likely as the surface temperature of Jupiter is about

–145°C, as 12. compared( PG )

to between –88°C and 58°C on Earth. The core of Jupiter is

even 13. hotter( CS )

, at about 35 700°C!

So far, nine spacecrafts have been sent to Jupiter by NASA since 1972. The latest

spacecraft named Juno 14. arrived( PG )

at Jupiter on 4 July 2016. The Juno team will

upload all the 15. images( CS )

taken by JunoCam onto the website for the public to view.
