Fantastic Mr. Fox (Oxford Playhouse) This stage adaptation of Roald Dahl's much- loved book is a treat for the whole family: the script carefully offers delights for older and younger audience members equally, appealing to all senses of humour. Moreover, the production's bold simplicity and stylish panache cater to a range of tastes. The general concept for the show, with its motif- based animal costumes and cartoonish set design, is attractive to the eye and strangely satisfying, in the way that plastic toy food or doll's-house furniture is. The dance routines, in line with the overall style, are basic but pleasing to watch and unfussy in a good way. The songs they are performed to are perhaps teetering on the wrong edge of basic - I couldn't hum any of them now, with the exception of the banging rock tune, 'Think Like a Fox', performed by the farmers, which was nothing short of spectacular. Two of the cast members having been struck with illness, there had been some shuffling around of parts for the performance last night, resulting in the Resident Director, Chloe Mashiter, stepping in at the last minute. She did a very impressive job, bringing 'Rabbit' to life with buckets of charm and character. Tanya Shields, usually an ensemble member, also stepped up to play Mrs Fox, and did so with emotional realism. It is a credit to the whole team that there were no obvious slips; the pace was unhindered and the show had a huge amount of energy. The bold physical gesture and heightened characterisation of the acting style was particularly successful in the cases of Mr Fox, played by Greg Barnett with camp, boyish exuberance, and farmer Bunce, played by Gruffudd Glyn, whose comic timing was fantastic. Some moments of the show are rather scary - if you will be watching with little ones in the front rows, it may be worth preparing them for the scary red-eyed dog who will appear amongst the audience. That said, the show certainly doesn't endorse the violence which the farmers speak of, and the take-home message of friendship in the face of violent enemies is loud and clear. This is clearly an ensemble with a strong bond who are having fun onstage, which really was a joy to watch. And judging by the contented giggles occasionally erupting from the generally quiet and attentive young audience, they would agree with me. -Madeleine Herbert How to Hide a Lion (Oxford Playhouse) Based on the children's book by Helen Stephens, How to Hide a Lion tells the story of young Iris who befriends an escaped lion and struggles to convince her family that her new four-pawed pal can be trusted. At the same time, Iris's hometown – boring old Middle Town – is in lockdown, knowing that a wild and dangerous animal is on the loose. This is a truly charming production that goes above and beyond to really ignite the imagination and create something you simply can't get from television or film. Before the show even starts, the two performers, Phil Yarrow and Clare Rebekah Pointing, immediately connect with their young audience, mingling with the children and welcoming them into their world – a hat shop, from where the story is told. Then, using puppets, fabulous little sets and props, as well as pitch-perfect songs and music, they act out the events at a pace just right for little ones (my three-year-old sat happily still, silent and engaged the whole way through – result!). Obviously, with a target audience aged 3-6 the plot isn't overly complicated, but the way in which it is presented is quite a feat. Yarrow and Pointing execute a mesmerising number of tasks to bring the characters to life and create an ever-changing, multi-dimensional set that comprises numerous backdrops, props, lighting effects and countless little touches. With young children you can understand the temptation to blast them with everything and anything all at once, but none of the 'extras' in How to Hide a Lion are in any way tacky or gratuitous. There is also a good moral to the story presented: that not all lions are dangerous – some can in fact be very good and helpful. Of course, the lion can represent whatever you want, but for children, I suspect the lion will remain a lion. That's the beauty of children's theatre: you don't expect impressive twist-filled storylines or some kind of intellectual, moral revelation, you just want to leave knowing your little one has enjoyed something simple, decent and innocent. How to Hide a Lion is just that: a sweet treat . -Gabrielle Brown Search all of Oxford’s theatrical, cinematic, festival-ish 0r lecture-y goings-on at dailyinfo.co.uk/events Fri 14th - Mon 17th Apr 2017 (Oxford Uni vac - 0th week) Oxford’s leading family owned tutoring company established since 2009. TRANSCRIPT

Fantastic Mr. Fox (Oxford Playhouse)This stage adaptation of Roald Dahl's much-loved book is a treat for the whole family: the script carefully offers delights for older and younger audience members equally, appealing to all senses of humour. Moreover, the production's bold simplicity and stylish panache cater to a range of tastes.

The general concept for the show, with its motif-based animal costumes and cartoonish set design, is attractive to the eye and strangely satisfying, in the way that plastic toy food or doll's-house furniture is.

-Madeleine Herbert

How to Hide a Lion (Oxford Playhouse)Based on the children's book by Helen Stephens, How to Hide a Lion tells the story of young Iris who befriends an escaped lion and struggles to convince her family that her new four-pawed pal can be trusted.

How to Hide a Lion is just that: a sweet treat.
