Margaret works as SIAMS Inspection and Training Manager for the dioceses of Worcester and Gloucester where she leads training for heads and governors in the requirements of the SIAMS Inspection Framework. She also works as a SIAMS Inspector for several dioceses in the South West. She has worked as a primary school deputy head and has led and advised schools in the development of their Christian values and church school distinctiveness.
Formerly, she worked as a local authority RE Advisory Teacher and has experience of working with staff, pupils, governors and parents from both primary and secondary phases.
Margaret James
Val Turner
Steph’s first teaching position was in Hereford, after which she taught ‘A’ level students at a VA school in Malvern before securing a post as Head of Religious Education in an 11 – 16 secondary school in 1982. She has been teaching since 1977 and still holds the same passion and desire to serve students with enthusiasm and commitment.
She is an Examiner for GCSE, and enjoys working with other colleagues. She sees the SIAMS inspection process as a vital opportunity for schools to receive affirmation of what they are doing extremely well, and where areas of development are needed. She sees it as a privilege to be part of the inspection process for First, Primary, Middle and Secondary Church Schools.
Steph enjoys travel and loves skiing and reading. She has a good sense of humour, and is absolutely passionate about RE teaching .
I am pleased to endorse this brochure of training events developed to support the training needs of our church schools. Please read it in tandem with the Service Level Agreement. The costs for the courses are for non-SLA members. Please remember, that if you have signed up to our Service Level Agreement, you can send more than one person to each course, giving excellent value for money.
An Introduction to the Course Leaders
Foreward from the Director of Education
Ann Mundy
Steph Boulter
Kevin Bryant Kevin has been a headteacher of two Shropshire Primary schools for the best part of twenty years as well as working as a Local Authority Inspector and Ofsted Inspector. He continues to teach every week in primary and secondary schools as well as running extracurricular activities. He is also a “Reader in training” with the Diocese of Herefordshire and Vice Chair of Governors in a Shropshire School.
He has a particular interest in supporting school improvement in the broadest sense, affirming so much that is good in our schools and nurturing schools facing difficult issues. He likes to bring his experience as an educationalist and governor to the “governors’ agenda” assisting governing bodies to be clear of their responsibilities and meeting them as efficiently as possible.
Val is ordained in the Church of England and works with her husband Mark within the context of a small retreat house in Hereford.
In addition to providing pastoral support for head teachers and school staff, offering spiritual direction and leadership mentoring, they provide Inset training days and whole school art teaching days.
Previously, Val was a vicar of rural parishes actively involved with state and church schools and chaplain to an FE college. Her working life before ordination was mainly secondary art teaching but also included seven years in pre-school and primary education, and two years teaching in a college of Education.

Living Out Christian Values in a
Church Family of Schools
For several years now schools have been actively engaged in developing an understanding of how to place values at the very heart of all that the school does, and then to adopt appropriate and effective strategies to monitor and evaluate their impact in a robust and systematic way.
Though of course each school is different because of the community it serves, for our church schools the values which underpin school life are specifically Christian in nature.
This course aims to help school leaders both to form and to articulate their Christian values, to engage the whole-school community in developing an understanding of the impact Christian values make upon relationships in that community, to learning and to the personal development of the children.
We shall explore:
• how the school can become more effective in ensuring that Christian values make a significant impact on the lives of all members of the school community,
• some approaches to embedding Christian values across the curriculum.

Teaching across the world’s religions
Teaching Religious Education is not just a skill but should be a mutually-enjoyable activity where teachers help and share with children as they explore the world in which they live; their values and their beliefs. In church schools there is an added incentive to engage and support children with their own exploration of religion, and help them relate what they see through the media to their own life experiences. So:
How can I improve the provision for RE? What sort of activities can engage the children? Can we as a school be more imaginative in our approach to RE?
The day will provide the opportunity to:
• share in a series of short interactive activities designed to promote
reflective learning across religions, including a range of festivals,
• reflect on how RE in your school can best respond to inspection
processes.

Godly Play

Imagine an approach to Christian nurture and education that:
promotes knowledge, skills empathy, spiritual growth, developed the needs of the whole child, provides a multi-sensory approach to learning, develops language and communication skills, develops thinking skills, provides depth and reflection in every session.
Godly Play is a creative and imaginative approach to Christian nurture based on long established, tried and tested approaches. It uses symbols and objects as well as words, and values process, openness and discovery. It invites listeners into stories and encourages them to connect the stories with personal experience. Godly Play is a non-coercive way to encourage children to move into larger dimensions of belief and faith, through wondering questions and open-ended response time.

Teaching across the world’s religions
Teaching Religious Education is not just a skill but can and should be a mutually -enjoyable activity where teachers help and share with children as they explore the world in which they live; their values and their beliefs. In church schools there is an added incentive to engage and support children with their own exploration of religion, and help them relate what they see through the media to their own life experiences. So:
1. How can the school improve the provision for RE? 2. What sort of activities can engage the children? 3. Can we as a school be more imaginative in our approach to RE?
The day will provide the opportunity to:
• share in a series of short activities designed to promote reflective learning across religions, including a range of festivals,
• reflect on how RE in your school can relate to inspection processes.
