More Than Just a Screw and Nut Assembly
Comptrol Complete Ballscrew Assemblies are more thanjust a ballscrew and nut assembly. Each assembly is acomplete "package" consisting of the ballscrew, ballnut, and end mounting bearing supports . . .delivered to you as one ready-to-install unit.
Select from standard componentsdesigned to work together
Instead of engineering components tomeet your design requirements, youchoose from a wide variety of standardballscrew products to give you the"package" that is best suited to yourapplication. Products which are pre-engineered and built to meet the rigorousperformance requirements of industrialapplications.
Products which include:
· Rolled thread ballscrews from 3/8" to 4" in diameter
· Single or preloaded ballnuts available in base, flange,cut-off flange, or trunnion mounting configurations
· End mounting bearing supports available in base, flange, and cut-off flange mounting configuration forsimple and rigid ballscrew end support.
Assemblies for smaller or larger diameter inch, metric, and precision ground ballscrews are also available.
Comptrol Complete Ballscrew Assemblies let you mix andmatch standard components to meet the designspecifications for your application.
In retrofit applications, replacing the complete assemblyoften allows you to upgrade the installation and improveperformance.

Four Standard Mounting Configurations
Comptrol single and preloaded ballnuts are available in over200 models in base, flange, cut-off flange, or trunnionmounting configurations to accommodate a wide range ofrolled thread and precision ground ballscrews.
Ballnut Orientation
Ballnut orientation isdetermined by the typeof ballnut required andhow it is to be attachedto the load.
Comptrol single andpreloaded ballnutassemblies give youthe design flexibility toselect the ballnutorientation required foryour application.
Therefore, it is animportant considerationfor any application andshould be noted whenspecifying the ballnutand mountingconfiguration youselect.

Single Non-Preloaded Ballnuts
Operating at 90% mechanical efficiency, Comptrol singleballnuts offer a definite advantage over other methods ofconverting rotary motion to linear motion. The smoothrolling contact between the bearing balls and theballscrew and nut assembly makes it possible tomove heavy loads in small increments as low as.0001", often with less power than is required usingconventional screws, pneumatics, or hydraulics.
Comptrol non-preloaded nut assemblies are idealfor applications where the applied load is alwaysin one direction. In these types of applications, the bearing balls always ride on one side of theball groove minimizing the effects of backlash onpositioning accuracy and repeatability.
However, in positioning load applications whereaccuracy and repeatability must be considered, aComptrol preloaded nut assembly is recommended.
Preloaded Zero Backlash Ballnuts
Designed for use with standard rolled thread ballscrews,Comptrol preloaded ballnuts offer performance normallyexpected from a precision ground screw, at a substantiallylower price.
The unique design of Comptrol's preloaded double nutassemblies allows the load to be attached to the center ofthe assembly. Centering the load between two opposingpreloaded ballnuts eliminates backlash resulting in truerbi-directional positioning accuracy and repeatability, a moreuniform preload, and low friction drag for optimum powertransmission efficiency.
The factory set preload adapter allows the preload to be setat up to 30% of the applied load for the selected ballscrew.Once set, the preload remains constant throughout the life ofthe screw.

Type A Bearing Support
Type A bearing supports aredesigned for applications thatrequire a simple, single bearingmount arrangement for radialsupport.
Type B Bearing Support
Type B supports feature a pairof back-to-back bi-directionalangular contact bearings tocontrol end play and providesimple, radial and axial support.
Type C Bearing Support
Type C supports are designedfor applications that require rigidsupport at one or both ends forthe ballscrew. A pair of spacedbi-directional angular contactbearings provide maximum axialload capacity and prevent radialor axial movement.
Type D straight journals areavailable with all Comptrol endsupports.

End Mounting Bearing Supports
Comptrol has pre-engineered three types of standardmounting arrangements to meet your requirements for rigidand/or simple bearing support on one or both ends of theballscrew. Mounting holes are counterbored and tapped forthreading into or bolting through the support for added designversatility. And each unit is sealed and pre-lubricated toprotect against contamination and ensure smooth operation.
Three Standard Mounting Configurations
Comptrol Type A, B, and C end supports are available inbase, flange, or cut-off flange mounting configurations toaccommodate the four most common mounting combinationused in ballscrew application. These combinations include:Rigid-Free, Simple-Simple, Simple-Rigid, and Rigid-Rigid.

Selecting the proper ballscrew package for a specificapplication involves consideration of many interrelatedfactors. Some of these factors are: load, speed, travel rate, positioning accuracy, repeatability, mounting rigidity, anddesign life. Changing one of these factors often influencesanother and the final decision regarding the proper ballscrewpackage for the application.
In some cases, additional factors must be considered suchas the operating environment, available drive torque, or sideloading. Overturning or cocking type loads should beavoided whenever possible. If you have any questionsregarding your specific application, please contact ComptrolIncorporated.
Defining the Application
Before starting the selection process, Comptrol suggestsdefining some basic operating parameters to determine thedesign requirements. These parameters include:
• Type of application, horizontal or vertical• Total weight of the load• Maximum travel rate• Length of stroke• Cycle rate• Design life objective• Type of end mounting• Tension or compression loading
Proper lubrication and protective covers should also beconsidered with respect to the operating conditions andenvironment.
End Mounting Bearing Supports
The end bearing support arrangement is usually the onedesign parameter left to the discretion of the designer. It isalso one of the most important because it affects criticalspeed, load capacities, and overall system stiffness.
Whenever possible, the ballscrew should be fixed at bothends using bi-directional thrust bearings and held in neithertension nor compression for maximum stiffness. If the screwmust be held under stress, tension is always more desirablethan compression.
Ballscrew Selection
In most applications, there are four main factors that mustbe considered when selecting the proper size ballscrew foran application. These factors include: the applied load, lifeexpectancy, compression loading, and critical speed.
Remember the ballscrew you select should meet or exceedthe application requirements. This may require selecting alarger ballscrew to meet the life expectancy, compressionloading, and/or critical speed requirements even though asmaller ballscrew has sufficient static load capacity.

EFFECTS OF CHANGE IN PARAMETER ONBALLSCREW CHARACTERISTICS
HOWAFFECTS
Basic Selection
The alternative is to change the design parameters, such asthe travel rate, end mounting, or life expectancy to allow asmaller diameter screw to be used. Any decision to changethe design parameters must be based on good engineeringpractices to maintain the safe operating conditions of theoverall system.
Specifying Complete Ballscrew Assemblies
Once the proper size ballscrew has been selected, thedimension drawings in this catalog, allow you to select theballnut and end support configuration necessary to meetyour space and mounting requirements.
The Faxalog on Page 26 makes it easy for you specify theballscrew package you selected. Or fax us your applicationdata and we will do the work for you.

Static Load
Static load rating is the maximum non-operating loadcapacity. In all application the total weight of the load shouldnot exceed the static load capacity of the ballscrew.
If a ballscrew is subject to a tension load, the static loadcapacity of the screw should be verified. However, if thescrew is subject to a compression load, one that tends tobuckle the screw, both the static and compression loadcapacities of the screw must be verified.
Applied Load
The applied load (the load seen by the screw) is dependenton whether the screw is to be used in a horizontal or verticalapplication, the total weight of the load that has to be moved, and the number of ballscrews used to move the load.
Whenever possible, the load direction should be coaxial withthe screw. Overturning or cocking type loads should beavoided.
In vertical applications, such as lifting or jacking, the appliedload is equal to the total weight of the load that has to bemoved.
In horizontal applications the load seen by the screw isequal to the total weight of the load times the coefficient offriction for the type of ways used to guide the load as itmoves.
Most applications only require one ballscrew. However, ifmore than one screw is required, the load seen by eachscrew is dependent on the distribution of the weight betweenthe screws. For example, if the weight is equally distributedamong four screws, the load seen by each screw would beone-fourth the total load.
Design Life Objective
After determining the applied operating load, the next step isto determine the design life objective, measured in inches oftravel, for the application.
For a horizontal application, the formula for calculating thedesign life objective is:
Design Life = S x C x H x D x Y
Where:S = Stroke Length, in inchesC = Cycles per hourH = Operating hours per dayD = Working days per yearY = Expected design life for the application, in years
For a vertical application, the above formula must be
multiplied by 2 because the load is always applied to thesame side of the ball groove.
Load/Life Relationship
The load-life relationship for a particular size ballscrew is aninverse cube ratio, analogous to the B10 rating common tothe ball bearing industry.
For example, reducing the load on the ballscrew by 1/2increases the life expectancy 8 times. Doubling the loaddecreases life to 1/8 the original expectation.
This makes the life of ballscrew predictable based on theapplied operating load that has to be moved and the totalinches of travel defined by the design life objective.
In most ballscrew applications, where the load is in tension, selection of the proper size ballscrew can be made based onthe load-life relationship for a stated load and design lifeobjective. However, in those applications where columnloading, critical speed, or other factors come into play, additional considerations must be made.
Critical Speed
Critical speed is the speed at which the nut or screw has atendency to develop severe vibrations. Under normaloperating conditions, the maximum safe operating speed ofa ballscrew assembly is 80 percent of the critical speedrating for the screw.
Critical speed is a function of the unsupported length of thescrew, the screw diameter, and the type of end bearingsupports. The unsupported length is the dominate factor, because the critical speed is inversely proportionate to thesquare of the unsupported length.
Compression Loading
Compression or column loads have a tendency to cause aballscrew to buckle. Therefore, whenever a ballscrew issubject to these types of loads, the safe compression ratingof the ballscrew must be verified.
The compression load capacity is dependent on theunsupported length of the ballscrew, the type of end bearingfixity, and the ballscrew diameter.
Ballscrew Design Considerations
Use FAXALOG on Page 26 to send or request information. 24
General Definitions:
Cycle - The complete forward and reverse motion of thescrew (or nut) in moving the load. One cycle is equivalent totwo strokes (one forward and one backward)
Lead - Axial distance screw or nut travels in one revolution.
Lead Error - The error in lead length per turn, per inch, perfoot or, overall length compared to the basic lead specified
Major Diameter - The outside diameter of the ballscrewshaft.
Minor (Root) Diameter - Diameter of the screw measured atthe bottom of the ball track.
Pitch (Ball Circle) Diameter - The nominal diameter of atheoretical cylinder passing through the centers of the ballswhen they are in contact with the ballscrew and ball nuttracks.
Pitch - The axial distance between succeeding ball grooves. The distance from a point on a ball track to a correspondingpoint on the next track, parallel to the ballscrew or ball nutaxis.
Life
Design Life Objective - The total number of inches that theball nut will travel during the desired life of the machine.
Load/Life Rating - The usable life of a ballscrew assemblymeasured in inches of travel under a specific load.
Service Life - The number of years the machine is designedfor.
Stroke - The axial distance in either direction that the screwor nut travels in moving the load.
Ball Circulation:
Backlash (End Play) - Axial free motion between the nut andthe screw.
Circuit - The continuous closed path of recirculating balls ina ball nut.
Effective Ball Turns - Thenumber of turns of ballscontained within the ball nutbody.
Load Carrying Balls - The ballsin contact with the ball groovesof both the nut and the screw forload carrying purposes.
Return Tube - The tubular member that carries balls fromthe output to the input end of each ball circuit to complete arecirculating ball path.
Loading:
Compression Load - A load which would tend to compress orbuckle the ballscrew shaft.
Dynamic Load Rating - The maximum load which a ballbearing screw assembly can maintain for a prescribedlength of travel.
Off Center Load - A load tending to cock the ball nut on thescrew, reducing the rated life. This must be considered inthe selection of the ball bearing screw assembly.
Preload - The use of one group of bearing balls set inopposition to another to remove axial lash or backlash andincrease ball bearing screw stiffness. All axial freedom iseliminated in preloading.
Side Load (Radial) - A load from the side that will reducethe rated life and must be considered in the selection of theball bearing screw.
Static Load - Themaximum non-operating load capacityabove which brinellingof the ball track occurs.
Tension Load - A loadwhich would tend tostretch the ballscrewshaft.
Thrust Load - Thrust load is loading parallel to andconcentric with the centerline of the screw shaft which actscontinuously in one direction. Thrust loading is the propermethod of attaching the load to the ball bearing screwassembly.
Critical Speed
The speed at which the nut or screw has a tendency todevelop severe vibrations. The desired speed should notexceed the safe rate of travel (revolutions per minute) for theunsupported length and type of mounting.
