Selina Reidy has been developing the competency tests for

Forensic Podiatrists with the Chartered Society of Forensic Sci-ence. All staff working within the Forensic Podiatry department are undergoing the competency testing. She has also been working on governance issues around the forensic work that is done within the department.

Jai Saxelby is also now contributing to forensic work in the

department.

We have done 2 training sessions for staff this year, both of which were informative and very well received

The first session was given by Martin Fox, a vascular specialist Podi-atrist. The knowledge gained has been very helpful in further devel-oping our vascular service (see photo).

The second session was on dermatology (skin). Staff are keen to further develop this within their practice.

Diabetes news

We have managed to secure some funding which will help us work towards meeting the NICE guidelines requirements for people with diabetic foot problems. This money has enabled us to recruit some temporary staff. This will help us give a better skill mix in the hospital and community sites.

The diabetes team have also been developing links with the

Renal team.

Due to the high demand for nail surgery, we have received

some additional funding to carry out increased assessments

and operations. We have undertaken some extra clinics on

Saturday mornings at Northern General Hospital and have

set up an extra regular clinic at Limbrick for assessments.

Nail surgery procedures are carried out at Woodhouse Clinic

and Firth Park Clinic.

TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATION WORKSHOP

On 16th October 24 clinicians from the Combined Community and Acute Care Group

attended a Technology in Health demonstration morning at the Advanced Wellbeing

Research Centre AWRC (Sheffield Hallam University). This included three of the podiatry team.

Christina King and Steve Haake from the Research Centre outlined the format of the workshop and

the partners who are working with the AWRC. There were a few presentations of how technologies

have been used in healthcare research. The group then spent 10 minutes at each demo station

where members of the centre where able to explain the different technologies that are available.

Everyone then had chance to put write down ideas of how these technologies might be used to

help answer some clinical questions. We are planning a review session in the New Year to consider

some of the ideas in more detail and see if any would be suitable to develop into a grant applica-

PodPAD Project

This study investigating a coordinated approach to the man-agement of people with Peripheral Vascular Disease (PAD) has now finished and the report is now being written up. Pa-tients received a tailored assessment and treatment pro-gramme involving podiatry, dietetics, exercise referral and smoking cessation services to improve symptoms of Periph-eral Arterial Disease.

Oliver Binns-Hall has completed a study with Prof Tesfaye investigating the early signs of neuropathy in patients with diabetes. It has been very well received and it is hoped that this will be published in a journal soon.
